Everton: McAvennie worried about Patterson

Frank McAvennie has said that Nathan Patterson’s lack of action at Everton so far ‘worries’ him.

The lowdown

The Toffees paid £12m, potentially rising to £16m with add-ons, to sign the 20-year-old during the January transfer window.

Patterson had been restricted to a mere two starts in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers as he competed with James Tavernier for the right-back spot. He has already worked under three different bosses at Goodison Park, but is yet to get any playing time in the first team.

Rafael Benitez left him on the bench for the FA Cup clash with Hull City and the Premier League game against Norwich. Duncan Ferguson then omitted him from the squad altogether for the visit of Aston Villa, before the youngster returned to the bench for Frank Lampard’s first game in charge against Brentford at the weekend, albeit without getting a run.

The latest

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie suggested that Everton perhaps ought to have loaned Patterson out so that he could play regular football, but he remains confident that the move will be a success given Lampard’s track record with young talent.

The former Celtic forward said: “He still hasn’t played, has he? So he’s gone from the bench at Rangers to the bench at Everton. I don’t blame him for moving.

“He was never going to get a game there. Maybe he should have been loaned out by Everton if he wasn’t going to play.

“It worries me that he isn’t playing and the Rangers mistake is being repeated but I’ve said before I think he has a future there.

“Lampard loves working with those youngsters. He did it at Derby and Chelsea so I’m sure he will be at all of the academy games.

“Obviously Patterson needs to work hard but I think his chances of playing have increased now.”

The verdict

Despite McAvennie’s concerns, it’s still very early days for Patterson on Merseyside. Everton have only played five times since he came to the club, and it’s not as if the youngster isn’t in the first-team picture whatsoever.

This should be viewed as a long-term signing: the Scotsman only turned 20 last autumn and he penned a five-and-a-half-year contract upon his arrival at Goodison Park.

Furthermore, Seamus Coleman is now 33 and is into the final 18 months of his deal, so perhaps we should expect to see Patterson gradually establish himself under Lampard, ready to take over as first-choice right-back if the Irish veteran departs at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Rangers given boost in Xavi Simons chase

Rangers have received a boost in their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain’s Xavi Simons with the news from L’Equipe (via Get French Football News) that he is yet to sign a new contract.

The lowdown

A report from Spanish outlet AS (via Glasgow Times) shortly before the turn of the year claimed that Rangers were leading the race for Simons, having opened talks with his agent Mino Raiola. The teenager, who joined PSG from Barcelona in the summer of 2019, is out of contract at the end of the current season.

Simons, who can play as an attacking midfielder, right winger and centre forward, has made four senior appearances for PSG, including two Coupe de France outings in the past month. He has also twice made the bench in Ligue 1 this season without getting any minutes.

The latest

The report from L’Equipe (via Get French Football News) claimed that PSG are at risk of losing Simons on a free transfer in the summer, having apparently become frustrated at the lack of first team opportunities afforded to him in the French capital.

Before he signs a new deal in Paris, the player wants guarantees that he will either be allowed to leave on loan for the remainder of the campaign or be properly integrated into the senior setup.

The verdict

This is a huge update from a Rangers perspective. It raises the genuine possibility that Simons will leave the Parc des Princes, and the Scottish champions appear to be at the front of the queue.

It would be some signing for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side. The Daily Record’s Robbie Copeland has written that the 18-year-old is ‘possibly the most exciting name Rangers have been linked with’; while another sports journalist in Maxi Angelo has raved about the teenager’s ‘spectacular’ showings in the UEFA Youth League after he produced three goals and six assists in the group stage of the tournament.

Even if the £1.6m-rated gem does sign a new deal at PSG, all hope may not be lost. If Simons gets his loan wish, he could still end up at Rangers on a temporary basis.

Ireland Under-19 star Craig Young gets Sussex deal

Craig Young, who represented Ireland at the Under-19 World Cup, has signed a one-year deal with Sussex. The offer was made following his performance in a bowling camp conducted by the county in Dubai.”I got news that I was being offered a contract following my time with them [Sussex] in Dubai. I’m delighted, and hopefully it’ll work out for me,” Young said. “I’ll be going over shortly for pre-season, and they’ll be in touch with Ireland to see what my likely commitments will be during the summer. After they speak with them, a plan will be drawn up which will hopefully work for everybody.”A new-ball bowler, Young, who plays his cricket for Bready in the NW league, came to the attention of the club’s scouts when he took 5 for 22 against Guernsey in the European Under-19 Championships in Jersey last summer. He travelled over to Sussex for a trial and was invited to the Dubai camp after the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand in January. Young took nine wickets at an average of 18.44 in the tournament, including a match-winning 4 for 14 in Ireland’s seven-wicket win against Zimbabwe.

West Ham to ‘push ahead’ with Phillips

Writing for The Evening Standard, reliable reporter Jack Rosser has made a West Ham United transfer claim involving Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips.

The Lowdown: West Ham in defensive crisis…

As the Irons suffer a blow in their race for a top four finish, succumbing to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Arsenal on Wednesday evening, manager David Moyes’ task to keep West Ham fighting at the top could only get harder.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Amid a hectic schedule with his side continuing to battle on all fronts, injuries to Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma have left Moyes short in central defence.

Only Issa Diop and Craig Dawson remain as senior options for the Scotsman, prompting the club to look at targets in the January window to reinforce West Ham’s options.

The Latest: Reliable reporter makes Phillips claim…

As explained by Rosser, writing for The Evening Standard, West Ham are ‘prepared to push ahead’ with a move to sign Phillips from Liverpool despite his fractured cheekbone.

Moyes is personally keen to add another central defender to his ranks with the 24-year-old a target and his recent injury apparently will not be a factor to West Ham swooping next month.

The Verdict: Right move?

As Liverpool slash his asking price from the summer, we believe the Hammers and recruitment chief Rob Newman could be striking a bargain if they move for Phillips.

The Athletic reported in the summer that FSG valued the player at £15m, with The Standard now claiming they will let him go for £10m, and West Ham should take full advantage of the discount.

Lauded as a ‘monster’ by manager Jurgen Klopp, Phillips contributed well during their injury crisis in defence last season – starting 15 Premier League matches and making more clearances on average than any Liverpool player (WhoScored).

Still at a fairly young age, the defender has many years to develop and mature into an even better option and the fact he is homegrown could come as an even greater incentive.

Brad Hodge has played his last first-class game after a knee injury ruled him out of what was intended to be his finale against New South Wales in Newcastle starting on Friday. Hodge struggled with knee soreness after aggravating an existing problem during Tuesday’s FR Cup match against South Australia. He announced his impending retirement from first-class cricket last month after family commitments won out over the desire to add to his six Test caps. Hodge leaves the first-class arena with 17,084 runs at 48.81 from 223 appearances, with 51 centuries and a top score of 302 not out. However, Hodge is keen to play on for Victoria in Twenty20 and one-day cricket and he has not given up hope of making the Australia squad for the ICC World Twenty20 in the West Indies next year. The Bushrangers will reassess Hodge’s fitness next week before the one-day against New South Wales in Sydney.Victoria have also lost Darren Pattinson to a calf strain, while his brother James Pattinson is having his workload managed and will miss Friday’s Sheffield Shield match. Jon Holland, Steven Gilmour and the uncapped left-arm fast bowler Will Sheridan have been included in a 12-man squad.New South Wales will again be captained by Moises Henriques, who at 22 last week became the fourth-youngest skipper in the state’s history. The legspinning allrounder Steven Smith will rejoin the side after a quick trip to Perth to act as cover for Nathan Hauritz in Australia’s Test squad.Victoria squad Chris Rogers, Nick Jewell, Lloyd Mash, David Hussey, Cameron White (capt), Andrew McDonald, Matthew Wade (wk), John Hastings, Jon Holland, Bryce McGain, Steven Gilmour, Will Sheridan.New South Wales squad Phillip Hughes, Phil Jaques, Usman Khawaja, Moises Henriques (capt), David Warner, Ben Rohrer, Daniel Smith (wk), Steven Smith, Grant Lambert, Stephen O’Keefe, Aaron Bird, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc.

Bielsa’s predicted Leeds XI vs Spurs

Leeds United will be looking to improve their fortunes on the pitch as they return from the international break just one place above the Premier League drop zone.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side now travel to north London to face a Tottenham Hotspur side buoyed by a new manager bounce, having appointed Antonio Conte as Nuno Santo’s successor nearly three weeks ago.

The Argentine has plenty of decisions to make heading into kick-off, not at least because of the several injury woes he’s faced since the start of the season.

But what sort of lineup could we see against Spurs? Here’s what Football FanCast are predicting…

There could be just two changes from the side that drew 1-1 with Leicester City before the break.

Both Patrick Bamford and vice-captain Luke Ayling are confirmed absentees for the trip south, though Bielsa is expected to be able to welcome back Junior Firpo, who could come straight into the starting XI at left-back, replacing Pascal Struijk.

He joins the defence of Liam Cooper, Diego Llorente and Stuart Dallas, in front of goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

In midfield, we could see Adam Forshaw and Kalvin Phillips continue their impressive-looking partnership. The former made his long-awaited comeback from injury and has since had two weeks to recover. It means Mateusz Klich remains on the bench.

Further up the pitch is where Bielsa has a major conundrum as his side has looked futile in front of goal. Jack Harrison’s struggles have been evident, so despite the 25-year-old starting eight games this season and featuring in 36 league games last term, he could be axed with Dan James taking up his place on the left.

Raphinha should resume his duties on the right, with Rodrigo through the middle.

But up top, there is a rare appearance for Tyler Roberts, who could be given the nod in the absence of Bamford.

AND in other news, Huge blow: Key Leeds man “not available” this weekend, Bielsa will be gutted…

Man City: Fans react to Sterling report

Raheem Sterling won’t be leaving Manchester City to join FC Barcelona in January, according to Marca.

City are said to be unwilling to let Sterling leave The Etihad on loan midway through the campaign.

Sterling’s equalising goal in City’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain in midweek was his fourth of the season.

The Englishman has now started, and scored, in back-to-back matches but game time has been limited overall.

The £300,000-per-week forward has started only four of City’s first 12 Premier League matches.

Sterling, who’s valued at £81million by Transfermarkt, will be out of contract at the end of next season.

Sterling not the only City player Barca fancy

21-year-old Spaniard Ferran Torres has, according to The Athletic’s Sam Lee, been ‘seduced by the idea of leading the line’ for Barcelona.

City are aware that he’s keen to move to the Camp Nou in January.

England brace for Mendis challenge

It could get ugly. England, abysmal England, their top six a mess of indecision and nerves, coming across an unusual spinner they haven’t played before; at the Wanderers, it might not be pretty on Friday. When England take on Ajantha Mendis, they are not just taking on their own dodgy past against quality spin, they are taking on their own dodgy past in the ODI game. This will be the first time England face Mendis in an international and generally, sides which come up against Mendis for the first time are sides that do not live to tell a happy tale. Some of the England players faced him as a net bowler in Sri Lanka a few years ago and even then the results weren’t impressive. The obligatory video tapes have been studied – Mendis’ rise incidentally has coincided with a rise in the sale of video machines – and players who have succeeded against him have been approached. The pool is not that big. Now it only remains for England to play him but, as South Africa discovered on opening night, you cannot remote control Mendis into submission.Pakistan are one of the teams to have consistently succeeded against Mendis – an anomaly given how poor their record is against all kinds of spinners ordinary and otherwise. They play him as they might a medium-pacer and in an ODI series earlier this year in Pakistan, they got similarly-styled bowlers to bowl at their batsmen on marble surfaces. Though Pakistan lost the series, their top order tore into Mendis, always attacking him early.England don’t have a collective strategy but Andy Flower, the coach, believes that they are equipped to handle him and Muttiah Muralitharan. “There is no team plan on how to play their spinners. There will be very much individual plans on how they play the spinners. That is a good challenge and I want to see who comes out of that well.” Flower, a fine player of spin, would’ve loved it, but his players, who are not so fine, are not likely to relish it as much.”Seeing Mendis for the first time is surprising. But our guys have had a good look at footage, we’ve spoken to other people who had success against him. The guys are as prepared as they can be without actually playing against him.”There is hope, for far stranger things have happened on cricket fields, and not just in the fact that England cannot possibly be as bad as they were against Australia, but in the match’s location. The Centurion is this tournament’s designated turner and the Wanderers, if the Pakistan-West Indies game is anything to go by, a handy track for fast bowlers.”Certainly we’re happier playing them here than at Centurion. Centurion would’ve played right into their hands,” Flower said. “The Wanderers turned a little yesterday but the bounce and pace of the pitch might suit us better.”It might but it might also suit Sri Lanka’s fast bowlers equally well, if not more. That has been behind a fair bit of their success and if there is something in the surface, or in the air, few people have exploited it better this year than Nuwan Kulasekara, or even Thilan Thushara. And it’s not as if England’s pace men have set the world alight recently, something Flower acknowledged. “It will help the quicks for sure but we struggled to take wickets against Australia as well. We contained them reasonably well but we struggled to take wickets.”Ultimately there is nothing as appealing, or a greater spur, as the mirage of redemption, of any kind and amount. What will drive on England more is the opportunity to distance themselves from the wreck of their last ODI series; being thrashed day in, day out by the same team is still worse than being thrashed day in, day out by a different team.”We didn’t end the summer well, and it was very frustrating for us all,” said Flower. “That doesn’t mean we give up on the players. We’ve picked these guys because of their performances in the past. Now they have opportunities in an exciting environment to play good cricket. I am confident and looking forward to seeing how they perform under pressure, which is the exciting thing about international cricket.”

BCCI triples Ranji Trophy prize money

An increase in prize money in the Ranji Trophy and the approval of an umpire’s academy are among the decisions taken by the BCCI’s working committee at its meeting in Mumbai

Cricinfo staff13-Aug-2009The BCCI’s working committee approved a raft of decisions on Thursday that, when implemented, could improve significantly the state of domestic cricket. The most notable decisions are a massive hike in prize money for the Ranji Trophy and the approval of an umpire’s academy.Winners of the Ranji Trophy will now get Rs 2 crore (previously Rs 60 lakhs), the runners-up Rs 1 crore (previously Rs 30 lakhs) and the semi-finalists Rs 50 lakhs. To put things in context, the winners in 2005 received all of Rs 7 lakh. This amount also places the Ranji Trophy above the board’s corporate tournament, scheduled to be held in the coming season, whose winners will get Rs 1 crore. While no details were available on the decision to set up an umpires’ academy, it could, if properly implemented, go some way in improve the standard of umpiring in domestic cricket. The other decisions taken at the meeting are: Former ICL players who have been granted amnesty, are eligible to play the IPL in the next season (2010), with a cap on the payment being a maximum of Rs 20 lakhs. Umpires Amiesh Saheba and Shavir Tarapore have been nominated to the ICC international panel. The Indian board will also give Rs 25 crores over the next two years to the All-India Football Federation for the development of football in the country. Specialised coaching centres dealing with batting in Mumbai, with fast bowling in Mohali, and with spinners and wicketkeepers in Chennai will be started in September 2009. Specialist coaches will be appointed on an annual retainership at each of the centres. Umpires in domestic matches (excluding IPL) will be paid Rs 7500 per match day, while umpire coaches and match referees will be paid Rs 10,000 per day. The team and support staff that won the Emerging Players tournament in Australia will be paid a bonus of Rs 1 lakh each. The National Cricket Academy’s coaching manual was released by BCCI president Shashank Manohar.
