Crystal Palace linked with Espirito Santo

Crystal Palace face competition from fellow Premier League side Everton for their first-choice managerial target Nuno Espirito Santo.

What’s the story?

According to TalkSport, the Toffees are set to rival Palace for the 47-year-old’s services after his surprising exit from Wolves just over a week ago.

Espirito Santo had been the favourite to fill the vacancy at Selhurst Park following extensive talks with the south London outfit’s hierarchy, but Carlo Ancelotti’s sudden departure from Everton has significantly altered the managerial landscape.

Fans will be gutted

The Portuguese manager is widely thought to have been in conversation with the Eagles over the last three days as they attempt to lure the highly-regarded tactician into an immediate Premier League return.

Espirito Santo’s exploits during a four-year-stint with Wolves had done enough to impress Palace chairman Steve Parish, who is keen to appoint him as Roy Hodgson’s successor this summer, and it looked as though a deal was close to being agreed.

However, Zinedine Zidane’s decision to leave his role as Real Madrid boss has caused an unlikely domino effect.

The Frenchman’s exit has seen Los Blancos president Florentino Perez turn to 61-year-old Ancelotti for a second time during his reign after the Italian delivered the Champions League in his first stint, meaning Everton are now also searching for a new manager.

Unfortunately for Palace, the Merseyside outfit are a considerably more attractive option for an ambitious manager like Espirito Santo.

Everton boast a far bigger budget, a better playing squad, with stars such as James Rodriguez and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to call upon, and a new state of the art stadium on the horizon.

Therefore, news that the Toffees are lining up a move for the former Porto and Valencia man will surely leave the capital club’s supporters gutted as they prepare themselves for a turbulent summer.

Whoever is finally appointed as Hodgson’s replacement will have a tough task ahead of them, and a highly-rated manager with several years of top-flight experience behind him such as Espirito Santo appeared to be an ideal fit.

Hopefully, the Eagles can still get the former Wolves manager in. However, Everton’s interest will not have made their task of getting him any easier and Palace fans will rightly be gutted if Nuno ends up at Goodison Park.

And, in other news…Parish must sanction CPFC swoop for “unbelievable” £36m-rated gem who’s “Drogba-esque”

Yorkshire blown away by Blewett and Johnson

Australian Greg Blewett and Paul Johnson destroyed Yorkshire with a stand of 150 for the fourth wicket at Headingley to take Nottinghamshire to their second consecutive Benson & Hedges Cup win.Blewett was out shortly before the close for an immaculate 84 but Johnson remained unbeaten on 71 as Notts cantered home with more than ten overs to spare. In front of a crowd of around 2,600, Blewett played the sort of innings that he rarely managed while with Yorkshire in 1999 when he struggled to find any sort of form either in one-day or championship cricket.Since joining Notts this season, however, he hasn’t put a foot wrong and this latest effort followed on the heels of 133 in the CricInfo Championship and 59 not out against Leicestershire in the B&H on Monday. He was dismissed spooning a ball from Chris Silverwood to mid-on after facing 102 balls and striking ten fours but by then Notts virtually had victory sewn up and at the close Johnson had lashed nine boundaries from his 72 balls.Chasing a 195 target on a pitch which eased out as the game progressed, Notts were in plenty of trouble before Blewett and Johnson came together. They slumped to 39 for three as Darren Bicknell chopped Ryan Sidebottom into his stumps, Guy Welton was smartly run out by Gary Fellows’ accurate throw to the wicket-keeper and Usman Afzaal edged a ball from Gavin Hamilton as soon as he entered the attack.Put in to bat, Yorkshire began solidly enough but never got on top of a sharp attack in which Paul Franks looked particularly dangerous and it was he who sent back openers Hamilton and Michael Vaughan.Blewett’s South Australia team-mate Darren Lehmann threatened to destroy Notts as he had done Derbyshire on Monday while compiling a century, but when he had got to 41 he fell to a great diving catch down the legside by Chris Read off Richard Logan. It was only an unbeaten eighth-wicket partnership of 36 in six overs between Richard Blakey and Chris Silverwood that took Yorkshire to a modest 194 for seven.

Off-field strategy against Aussies was deliberate: Ganguly

Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has advocated the need for appointing a media manager for the team, saying it would ease the pressure on the captain and the players considerably

26-May-2001Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has advocated the need for appointing a media manager for the team, saying it would ease the pressure on the captain and the players considerably."Most of the teams have a media manager these days which makes the job much easier for the team. Only the teams in the sub-continent don’t have one. I think it is very necessary", Ganguly said in an interview to Doordarshan telecast on Friday.Ganguly said that the captain has to answer a lot of questions during a series and often the media misreports the statements which gives a totally different meaning."When statements are distorted, people who read the reports have a different idea of the situation. If we have a media manager, it will ease the pressure on the captain, coach and the manager", he said. The Indian captain, who appeared for the first time in a joint interview with wife Dona, spoke on a wide range of subjects covering some of the controversies during the recent series against Australia and his family life.Ganguly said the series of controversial articles and misreporting in recent times had prompted him to be more reticent and choosy while handling the media in the country. "…after some time, you come to know who is doing the right thing and who is not doing. You have to judge for yourself", he said.Ganguly, who led India to a remarkable 2-1 series win against the formidable Australians, said that the off-field strategies he had adopted against the Australians were deliberately done to create pressure on them."Everything was part of a strategy. They (Australians) did everything they wanted and often crossed the limits. I think it was not correct on their part. We just gave them back", the Indian skipper disclosed."When you are competing to win a crucial series, you tend to overdo it at times at the cost of sportsmanship. We thought that the only way to stop them was to do what they did. I could understand that it was affecting them", he said.Ganguly said that he had a lot of respect for the Australian captain Steve Waugh and his teammates but some of the complaints they made during the series were "school boy stuff".On the chucking issue which has resurfaced in international cricket, the Indian captain said the issue seemed quite complicated and he often saw no perceptible change in the action of a bowler after being cleared of throwing."It is no doubt an issue. There is no point giving a bowler undue advantage. But at times, when a suspended bowler returns after two months, I see no change in his action".Ganguly said that once a bowler was cleared of chucking by the International Cricket Council’s committee on illegal deliveries, he should never be called again. "If a bowler is repeatedly called, it puts a lot of pressure on him. He has to get cleared again and again and it is not good for him".Ganguly described an article by former Australian captain Ian Chappell during the India-Australia series as "pre-planned" and said he had to issue a rejoinder as he had made certain baseless remarks about the team."He has the right to criticise my batting and my captaincy. Every individual may have their own opinion. But he said certain things involving the team without even verifying the facts. Everything was pre-planned", he said.Going down memory lane, the Indian skipper recalled his schooldays which he thought were the most important part of life as it laid the foundation for the future.Wife Dona said that though life had changed a lot after her husband became the national captain, many of the things still remained the same. Going to the movie halls has become a big problem for Indian cricket’s star couple. "He enjoys going to the movies. We generally go for the last show. If there is a lot of crowd, Sourav joins us after the show starts when it is dark", she disclosed.Dona also recalled her early experience in cooking and how she was apprehensive of how Sourav would take it. "It is in England when I first started cooking for him. He was playing county cricket and craved for home cooked food. As time passed, my cooking also improved".Describing her husband as a "self-made man", Dona said Sourav seldom relied on his family for mental or emotional support. "He is strong. Anybody playing for the country has to be strong". She revealed how she used to carry Sourav’s favourite food items to the hotel during the Test matches in Kolkata where the captain stayed with the team in the hotel.

Doekhi could replace Helander at Rangers

Alan Hutton has suggested that Danilho Doekhi could replace Filip Helander at Glasgow Rangers.

Hutton makes Doekhi claim

The Gers have been linked with a move for the Vitesse Arnhem defender (The Telegraph), while Leicester City and Aston Villa have both been linked with moves for Helander (Aftonbladet).

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton has suggested that Doekhi could be a replacement for the Swede. He said:

“They obviously do their work on the scouting side.

“They look into the potential these players have. If they can, they’ll sell the likes of Helander and replace them with someone who fits the bill.

“Someone they can mould into their type of player, that’s how Rangers are working now.

“Bringing in youth players who are hungry to do well and then get them in the Premier League for a fee.

“This guy sounds talented and the scouts will have watched him for a long time, he obviously fits the bill.”

Planning for the future

At 21, Doekhi has almost his whole career ahead of him. With him at the heart of the defence, Vitesse have also enjoyed a positive season – only champions Ajax have conceded fewer than their 29 goals in the Eredivisie (Sky Sports). Potentially available at £1.5m, he could be a bargain signing for the Gers.

Meanwhile, the Gers are said to be demanding £6m for Helander. The Sweden international has been an important player for the Ibrox outfit – they are yet to lose a league game with him in the side – but he has managed just 29 Premiership appearances in the two seasons he has spent in Glasgow (Transfermarkt), and he is already 28 years of age. Replacing him with Doekhi could well be an astute decision from Ross Wilson and co.

In other news, some Rangers fans slam this man’s performance against Celtic.

Leeds United told to swerve £35m deal

Former Leeds United star Jon Newsome has urged the Premier League club to avoid a swoop for striker target Ivan Toney this summer, telling Football FanCast exclusively that he wouldn’t sanction such a move to Elland Road.

Toney has been in red-hot form for the Championship club this season.

He has scored 29 goals and laid on 10 assists with the Bees chasing promotion to the Premier League.

However, reports have indicated that Toney would cost a sizeable fee.

Football League World has reported that the club will demand a £35m fee if they are to let him move in the coming transfer window and Newsome, who won the First Division with Leeds in the 1991/92 season, believes that such a deal would simply be too expensive for the club.

Indeed, he pointed to the club’s summer signings, in which they splashed out on a number of senior players, but never paid over £26m, with that fee marking a club-record when they signed Rodrigo from Valencia.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, Newsome was asked whether he would sanction such a deal for Toney if he had the choice and he was definitive in his response.

He said: “In a word, no. No, I don’t think I would. I mean, if you’re looking at the players that they brought into the football club in the summer, all four of them are international football players and not one of them has got anywhere near the 35 million pound price tag.

“So I’m not diminishing Toney’s ability and the impact that he’s had at Brentford this season, because I think he’s doing incredibly well, he’s doing really well.”

Villa could sign perfect Grealish partner in Buendia

Aston Villa could sign Jack Grealish’s perfect partner in Norwich City star Emiliano Buendia, amid Lee Hendrie’s transfer claim.

What’s the story?

The Canaries look set to earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt, currently top of the table in the Championship. Despite that, Hendrie has suggested that a “big club” will look to take Buendia off their hands, and insisted that the 24-year-old would be near the top of his list for potential summer transfer targets.

The former Villa midfielder told This Is Futbol: “I think a big club will definitely try and take him. I know you can say he’s done it in the Championship, but you could say that about (Said) Benrahma, you could say that about Ollie Watkins.

“I feel that Buendia, I mean we’ve seen him in a very good Norwich side in the Championship, I feel in a Villa side… wow. If I could say or had a big say in bringing players in, he’s the one on top of my list that I would bring into Aston Villa.”

Imagine him and Grealish

While Grealish may be out injured right now, when the Villa talisman does eventually return, Smith’s side could surely do with someone who could ease the burden on their skipper.

In the “exceptional” Buendia, they could sign someone who is Premier League proven and could offer the same levels of creativity that their main man provides. The Argentine’s total number of chances created last season in the top flight ranked him fourth in the entire division, despite playing for a team who ended up getting relegated.

He has provided a whopping 12 goals and 16 assists this season in the Championship, showcasing impressive qualities in the final third and being dubbed “very special”  by Norwich defender Ben Gibson.

The £19.8m-rated ace has been branded a “revelation” by former Villa striker Chris Sutton, and the playmaker could link up to great effect with someone like Grealish, interchanging positions and feeding one other.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-aston-villa-transfer-rumours-and-news-copy-copy” title=”Latest Aston Villa transfer rumours and news”]

If Grealish is then out injured, Smith would surely be more confident by at least having Buendia to take up the mantle. Whether or not Villa’s talisman is in the team, the signing of the Norwich star would appear to be a superb move this summer.

Meanwhile, Villa’s summer plans are exciting news for Dean Smith and the fans…
