Pressure on England to arrest collapse of confidence

England’s dominance in this series, taken somewhat for granted as they coasted to a 2-0 lead with a nine-wicket win in the second Test at Edgbaston, is nowhere near as absolute as it might have once appeared

Andrew Miller at Lord's25-Aug-2010Whether last week’s result at The Oval was attributable to poor batting from England or outstanding bowling from Pakistan – and the truth invariably lies somewhere in between – it is a fact nonetheless that England’s dominance in this series, taken somewhat for granted as they coasted to a 2-0 lead with a nine-wicket win in the second Test at Edgbaston, is nowhere near as absolute as it might have once appeared. In fact, as the series finale looms at an overcast (and therefore swing-friendly) Lord’s, it might even be described as precarious. Thanks to an ever-diminishing series of team totals, which have drifted downwards from a decent 354 in the first Test at Trent Bridge to an insubstantial 222 at The Oval, the focus has fallen on England’s batsmen to a degree not seen since they crashed to 102 all out at Headingley in the penultimate Test against Australia last summer. Then, of course, they battled back from a series-squaring innings defeat to claim the Ashes one match later with a hefty victory at The Oval, and all was forgiven. The challenge now, in England’s final Test before the squad to tour Down Under is finalised, is to re-harness those powers of bouncebackability.”It certainly wasn’t the worst game we’ve had since I took charge,” said England’s captain, Andrew Strauss. “We’ve had some poor performances in the past, but we lost the game and that was disappointing because we should have been better than that. There are lessons to be learnt from The Oval and there’s a pretty strong determination within the group to prove that that was a one-off and that we’re better than we showed [in that match]. That’s a pretty good state of mind to have, because generally, when we’ve had that state of mind, we’ve done well.”England, to be fair, have long had a pretty healthy record in that regard. It wasn’t until the penultimate year of Michael Vaughan’s reign, against India in 2007, that he relinquished his record of following every Test defeat with a victory at the next attempt, and while Andrew Strauss hasn’t quite attained those standards, he’s nevertheless started pretty healthily with a draw and two victories following his three previous defeats as England captain. However, given that England bowled Pakistan out for 80 and 72 in the first two Tests at Trent Bridge and Edgbaston, last week’s defeat has to rate as the most unexpected yet of Strauss’s captaincy career – even ahead of the infamous 51 all out in Sabina Park 18 months ago, for the speed of that second-innings capitulation was at least in keeping with the pervading mood of crisis that had gripped the England squad since the falling-out between Kevin Pietersen and Peter Moores. The Oval reversal, on the other hand, has awakened issues that had been allowed to pass unnoticed during a misleadingly comfortable run of six Test wins in a row – and need to be addressed rather urgently.”We haven’t batted brilliantly, but it’s hard to score 500 on a pitch that’s doing a lot,” said Strauss. “There was less excuse at The Oval because that was a pretty good batting wicket, but when you as a side are scoring 200 on a pitch where the opposition are being bowled out for 80, you’ve done a reasonably good job. It would be wrong to bury our heads in the sand and say everything is fine, but I’m very satisfied with the batting group generally. The key is to make sure that if you do lose a wicket, the next guy that comes in establishes himself at the crease and doesn’t allow the opposition to build some strong momentum.”For Strauss himself, there’s an extra pressure looming in this match, partly as a result of Alastair Cook’s success in quelling the calls for his head by reaching a personally invaluable century in that Oval defeat, and partly as a consequence of Strauss’s own struggle for form this summer. As was the case against India in 2007, when he was dropped from the team following a prolonged slump, he’s been dismissed by a left-arm seamer in five innings out of six – with Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz filling the roles of Zaheer Khan and RP Singh respectively. And while Kevin Pietersen has attracted attention for his run of 25 innings without a century, Strauss is also in need of a significant score – since making 161 against Australia on this ground in July 2009, he’s gone 22 innings without reaching three figures.”It’s one of those things,” said Strauss. “If you start looking for too many reasons for things, then you’re not concentrating on what you need to do, which is to go out and play. I’m reasonably happy with how my batting is going, because I’ve made some useful contributions but not got to three figures. A lot of the pressure that comes on a batsman comes from outside the group, but Lord’s is a wicket I generally play well on, and I’m confident things will go my way.”If ever there was a venue designed to quell the jitters of England’s malfunctioning top-order, it is Lord’s, where a place on the famous dressing-room honours board manages – for the batsmen at least – to be both a thrilling accolade and somewhat passé. Both Strauss and Pietersen have made four centuries at the ground, with Pietersen’s 152 against South Africa in 2008 leading to his memorable declaration that he had “never felt so loved”, and of the current top seven, only Eoin Morgan has yet to make his mark. Admittedly, he’s only played at the ground on one occasion, against Bangladesh earlier this summer, but that was also Jonathan Trott’s Lord’s debut, and he marked the occasion with a career-best 226.For Pakistan, however, the allure of playing at Lord’s will be heightened by the memories and lessons learned during their defeat against Australia earlier in the summer. Although the eventual 150-run margin looks emphatic on paper, the reality was of another nip-and-tuck contest in which ball dominated bat until the latter stages of Australia’s second innings, when the sun shone sufficiently to allow the last two wickets to add a vital 126 runs. Pakistan’s captain, Salman Butt, who made 63 and 92 in the match, believes his team will be stronger for the experience.”Now we know the slopes and from where the wind comes,” he said. “Not more than the English team, but still I think if we can play to our potential, we can beat them and level the series, and that would be the most wonderful thing. To come from 2-0 down to level the series would help and boost their confidence for the rest of their futures, and in difficult times in the future they will have something very good to remember – even when they are older and telling young people what can happen.”

Rildo também estreou no time cruz-maltino.

Sábado, o Cruz-Maltino enfrenta o Flamengo no Maracanã. Já a Cabofriense, na segunda-feira, visita o Volta Redonda no Raulino de Oliveira.

ExWHUemployee drops contract update

West Ham United have opened negotiations with Angelo Ogbonna, Ben Johnson and Lukasz Fabianski in order to extend their stays at the London Stadium.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by ExWHUemployee, who revealed in a recent The West Ham Way podcast that David Moyes’ side have opened contract talks with all three players, each of whom are currently on deals that expire at the end of the current campaign. An announcement regarding their respective extensions is expected to be made by the club in the near future.

In his post, the West Ham insider said: “Contract news should come soon. Negotiations have been ongoing for Fabianski, Ogbonna and Johnson.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how impressive Fabianski, Ogbonna and Johnson have been for West Ham so far this season, the news that the club are working towards extending all three of their contracts beyond the end of the season is sure to have left the London Stadium faithful buzzing.

Indeed, over Johnson’s 11 Premier League appearances this term, the £2.7m-rated full-back has helped his side to keep two clean sheets and scored one goal, as well as making 1.3 interceptions, 2.2 tackles and 2.6 clearances per game and winning 54% of his duels.

These returns have seen the 21-year-old defender average an impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.00, ranking him as the Hammers’ fifth-best performer in the league.

Meanwhile, over Fabianski’s 20 league outings in the current campaign, the £900k-rated goalkeeper has kept four clean sheets and made 3.3 saves per match, with these metrics seeing the 36-year-old shot-stopper average a SofaScore match rating of 6.88.

Finally, over Ogbonna’s 11 Premier League outings prior to suffering a cruciate ligament injury back in November, the £1.8m-rated centre-back had helped the Irons to keep three clean sheets and scored one goal. These returns saw the 33-year-old average a SofaScore match rating of 6.71.

As such, considering just how important they are to the West Ham cause, the news that all three players look set to extend their respective stays in east London beyond the end of the current campaign is undoubtedly fantastic for everyone involved with the club.

Ahmedabad takes steps to curb moth menace

The Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) will use fogging machines to reduce the menace created by moths attracted to lights during the IPL matches. Ahmedabad hosted its first IPL game on March 15 – Rajasthan Royals lost to Delhi Daredevils – but the players and spectators had to endure an army of moths. The insects swarmed over the entire ground, including the stands and the media box, making it difficult for the players and everyone else to sight the ball clearly. The seriousness of the issue was highlighted by Shane Warne and Virender Sehwag after the match and both voiced their concern and irritation about the moths. “A couple [of moths] hit me in the eye when [Shaun] Tait was bowling and I was in the slips. Lucky that nobody nicked, otherwise I could’ve got hurt,” Warne said.Sehwag was more direct. “[I was] Very much distracted because it is difficult to focus on the ball when you are running, and it is scary when some moth comes and hits you in the eye,” Sehwag, who was the Man of the Match for his aggressive half-century, said. He had a similar experience during the 2009 IPL in South Africa, when an insect got into his eye, and hence he was wearing night glasses as a precaution.Embarrassed by the incident, GCA officials are confident there would be no moth menace during Saturday’s match between Rajasthan and Kolkata Knight Riders, which starts at 4 pm. “We have been using the fogging machines inside and outside of the ground for the last two days after six in the evening, as the moths come out in huge numbers in the evening,” Rajesh Patel, the GCA secretary said. He also said a private firm would be carrying out a pesticide treatment throughout the ground from eight in the morning on Friday, followed by another round of fogging later in the evening.Dhiraj Parasana, who has been Motera’s curator since the venue was inducted into the BCCI fold, said the spring-summer season was usually the breeding period for insects and that the floodlights were another attraction. “It is typical for the moths to appear at this time of the year especially under lights,” Parsana said. “My experience says it will reduce, being a day game. It will be a lesser problem as the game should end by 7.30 pm and the moths appear normally after the lights come on fully.”

Leeds eye up Fabio Carvalho move

Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing exciting Fulham youngster Fabio Carvalho, but they are not alone in being linked with a move for the starlet.

The Lowdown: Carvalho shining for Fulham

The 19-year-old has been a key player for a Cottagers side currently leading the way in the Championship this season, scoring eight goals and registering two assists in 14 league starts. He has also represented England at various youth levels, including six caps for the country’s under-18 side.

The attacking midfielder’s performances have caught the eye of a number of clubs, and according to a fresh report, Leeds are among the suitors.

The Latest: Leeds linked with Carvalho move

According to The Daily Mail, the Whites see Carvalho as an exciting option to bring in during the January transfer window, with a move to the Premier League this month potentially ‘too tempting to turn down’. Indeed, the 19-year-old rejected the offer of a new contract at Craven Cottage in November.

Liverpool and West Ham are also credited with taking an interest in the Fulham starlet, so it may not be easy for Whites to get a deal over the line if they are battling with two of the top flight’s current top five.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-32/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Hugely exciting prospect

It is crucial that Marcelo Bielsa plans for both the present and the future, ensuring Leeds that continue to grow after he has left the club, and Carvalho could be a great prospective signing in that respect.

He possesses huge long-term potential, already a standout performer for a team who have scored a ridiculous 73 goals in just 27 league matches this season, and he has been hailed as ‘fantastic’ by his current manager Marco Silva.

The lure of Liverpool in particular could act as a stumbling block for Leeds, but a greater prospect of first-team action at Elland Road – where young talents like Charlie Cresswell, Cody Drameh and Joe Gelhardt have all earned Premier League starts this season – could possibly give the Whites an edge.

Downie: Newcastle eyeing other CBs

Keith Downie has revealed that Newcastle United are now eyeing other central defenders whose names have not yet been reported.

The Lowdown: Who’s been linked so far?

Following the arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood at St. James’ Park, it looks as if the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium are now looking at bringing in a new centre-back as their third signing in the January transfer window.

The names that have been linked the most seem to be Sven Botman, Diego Carlos and Benoit Badiashile, but as the window ticks down it may be that the new owners now look at other targets to bring in, with crucial games against both Watford and Leeds United in the Premier League coming up.

The Latest: Alternatives eyed

Speaking to The Transfer Tavern, Sky Sports journalist Downie has revealed that the North East club are now eyeing alternative targets in the centre-half position, outside of the names already reported:

“I think they’re just juggling a few names at the moment.

“I mean, if I’m honest I was given two other names yesterday that I have not reported yet, because I’m trying to stand those up.”

The Verdict: Get one in now

Whoever the player is, the Tyneside outfit simply need to get a central defender in now.

They currently have the second-worst defensive record in the top flight, and so freshening up the backline would really help Eddie Howe and his team going forward.

Looking at their current options, Ciaran Clark is currently rated as the division’s worst centre-back (to have played at least five games) so far this season, while Federico Fernandez, Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles all rank inside the worst eleven (WhoScored).

It is clearly an area that needs improving, and so a new centre-half must now be the priority for the Magpies.

Postecoglou must unleash Moffat

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side will undoubtedly be heading into Wednesday night’s Premiership fixture against St. Mirren in fine spirits, having just won the 56-year-old manager his first trophy as the Bhoys boss – defeating Hibernian 2-1 at Hampden Park in the League Cup final on Sunday afternoon.

However, while Kyogo Furuhashi and Mikey Johnston both returned from injury to play a part in the cup final last weekend, Postecoglou looks as if he will still be without the services of Jota, James Forrest, Giorgos Giakoumakis, Albian Ajeti and the newly injured David Turnbull for the trip to St. Mirren Park tomorrow evening – all of whom appear to be continued absences due to various knocks.

Although, with the games coming thick and fast for Celtic at present, a fixture against the team who currently sit ninth in the Premiership table may not be the worst time to rest a couple of the Hoops’ more regular starters, while simultaneously presenting the 56-year-old Bhoys boss with the opportunity to field a number of his exciting up and coming youth prospects – arguably the most talented of whom is 19-year-old, Owen Moffat.

Postecoglou must unleash Moffat

Having been brought on in both the 2-1 Premiership win over Ross County and the 2-1 League Cup final victory over Hibs last week, the teenage left-winger is undoubtedly a player who will be pushing for a starting spot in Postecoglou’s side over the coming weeks.

And, considering how impressive the youngster has been for Celtic’s B team side so far this season, it would very much appear as if Moffat is worthy of a shot from the off against St. Mirren on Wednesday evening.

Indeed, the forward is the reserve side’s top goalscorer in the Scottish Lowland League, having bagged 11 times in the division already this season – five more than any of his teammates.

As a result of this form, as well as Celtic’s crippling injury list, Postecoglou called the 19-year-old up to first-team training last week, and the 56-year-old appears to be incredibly impressed with the way the youngster has performed at Lennoxtown.

Speaking about Moffat, the Bhoys boss said: “Life is about opportunity. Not just being in the right place at the right time, but also being ready for it. Moff probably wasn’t in the calculations two weeks ago, but we just had so many injuries and we brought him into training and he has looked bright.

“We brought him on the other night and he looked good. That, to me, is a lesson for every player out there. You have to be ready for that opportunity.”

And, although the Hoops’ injury list has been slighted shortened by the return of both Kyogo and Johnston, should Postecoglou wish to keep as many of his first-team players as possible fit over the coming weeks, he must start rotating his squad more efficiently – leading us to believe that the Greek-Australian coach simply must start Moffat against St. Mirren tomorrow night.

Symonds ends break to join Bulls

Andrew Symonds’ Queensland comeback will begin on Saturday after he answered a call to help out the injury-depleted one-day side in Alice Springs. Symonds, who had his Cricket Australia contract torn up in May, was due to play only Twenty20 matches for the state as a guest signing, but a recurrence of Chris Swan’s groin problem and a knee injury for Glen Batticciotto led to an early return.Symonds agreed on Wednesday to join the FR Cup squad to face South Australia and will be paid on a match contract. Queensland’s selection chairman Ray Phillips said Symonds had been waiting for the call.”At this stage, this is a one-off with Andrew, but we will look at how things sit with the recovery of the injured players during the tour game with the West Indies and make some plans from there,” Phillips said. The Bulls are currently on top of the FR Cup table but are also without Ryan Harris (knee), James Hopes (hamstring), Ben Laughlin (abdominal strain) and Grant Sullivan (hamstring), leaving Symonds to provide some much-needed experience with bat and ball.Until now Symonds was destined for a life as a Twenty20 specialist following his axing from the Australia side for drinking in public in England. That misdemeanour followed a string of more serious offences which had him on a last warning with his Cricket Australia bosses. The decision ended his international career at 26 Tests, 198 ODIs and 14 Twenty20s.Queensland were prepared to include Symonds in their squad but he did not want to commit to a full season. His last major tournament was the Champions League Twenty20 in India, where his side the Deccan Chargers were knocked out in the first round.Queensland squad Ryan Broad, Chris Hartley (wk), Lee Carseldine, Andrew Symonds, Wade Townsend, Craig Philipson, Nathan Reardon, Chris Simpson (capt), Nathan Rimmington, Scott Walter, Ben Cutting, Alister McDermott.

Chey Dunkley must start against Sunderland

After securing their fourth consecutive draw in League One with a 2-2 result against Cheltenham Town at the weekend, Sheffield Wednesday are back in action on Tuesday evening with a big clash against Sunderland, who are currently six points ahead of Darren Moore’s side in the table.

On the chalkboard

Looking ahead to the midweek match against the Black Cats, one Wednesday player that featured in the draw against Cheltenham that we feel should be in the starting XI against Sunderland is defender Chey Dunkley.

During the match at the weekend, Dunkley started and played the full 90 minutes and not only did he manage to score one of Wednesday’s goals on the day, but he also managed to make a vital contribution at the other end of the pitch.

He made three interceptions, blocked three shots and produced four clearances which led to him winning ten of the 14 duels he was involved in. That ultimately earned him an impressive overall match rating of 8/10, making him Wednesday’s highest-rated player on the day according to SofaScore.

This shows just how useful Dunkley, who has been described as “solid” in the past by Moore, can be for the Owls in a defensive and attacking sense on this occasion. That’s precisely why we feel he would be a good option to start again against Sunderland who could see their attacking players bullied while trying to get past the Wednesday defender.

The Yorkshire side signed Dunkley back in August 2020 from Wigan Athletic on a free transfer on a reported two-year deal. Since then, the 29-year-old, who is currently valued at £720k according to Transfermarkt, has made 22 appearances for the Owls across all competitions.

Looking ahead to the match against Lee Johnson’s side, who were beaten 5-1 by Rotherham United in their previous league outing, we feel that Dunkley should definitely be in the starting XI, especially if Dominic Iorfa, who missed the Cheltenham game through injury, isn’t available to play after Moore said it’s 50/50 over whether he’d be fit enough to play a part.

If Dunkley does play in midweek, we think he would give Wednesday a great chance of grabbing a positive result and keeping their unbeaten streak going with the Owls having not lost a league game since their 2-1 defeat against Oxford United back in early October.
