Ryder dropped for Wellington Test

Jesse Ryder and Doug Bracewell will not be considered for the second Test against India in Wellington, New Zealand coach Mike Hesson has said

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Feb-2014Jesse Ryder and Doug Bracewell will not be considered for the second Test against India in Wellington, New Zealand coach Mike Hesson has said. Ryder and Bracewell, who were in the squad for the first Test, are under investigation by New Zealand Cricket for staying out late at an Auckland bar the night before that match began.”We’ll be naming our second Test side tomorrow or maybe later on today and neither Jesse Ryder nor Doug Bracewell will be available for selection,” Hesson said.Bracewell suffered a broken foot during that period which ruled him out of any cricket for a while. He returned to his hometown Napier, while Ryder made an unbeaten century for Otago in an ongoing Plunket Shield match against Central Districts in Nelson.Hesson declined to say anything on the duo’s future while the investigation was underway but added that he expected players to make “good decisions” about their preparation ahead of a game.”There’s an investigation taking place and we’ll let that run its course before making any bold statements about that sort of thing. Once we get the full information and facts, we’ll be in a far better position to make a statement. It’s important we don’t jump to conclusions without getting the full facts.”We need to make sure all our players prepare themselves accordingly for Test cricket and at the moment we don’t have confidence that that’s the case.”We have faith in our players that they make good decisions around their preparation. We’re dealing with grown men so if a player was to have a beer with their meal before a game we don’t have an issue with that at all. These are grown men who can make decisions. There’s a bit difference between that and what occurred the night before the Test.”Bracewell and Ryder have had a history of disciplinary issues. During the series against South Africa in March 2012, both were dropped from the ODI team after breaking team protocol, following the match in Napier. In November last year, Bracewell was dropped from the Central Districts side for an HRV Cup game after a late night out.The ODI against South Africa in Napier in March 2012 was also the last match Ryder played for New Zealand until his recent comeback against West Indies. Following the incident, the batsman decided to take an indefinite break from cricket. In March 2013, Ryder was assaulted outside a bar in Christchurch and spent two days in a medically induced coma before making a recovery. In August 2013, he was given a retrospective six-month ban for failing a routine drug test while playing domestic cricket.

No central contract for Zaheer, Sehwag

Zaheer Khan, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh find themselves out of contract for the 2013-14 season, while Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh find themselves downgraded in the BCCI’s retainer list

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Nov-2013BCCI’s retainer list for 2013-14

Grade A (Rs 1 crore/USD 158,000 approx): Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, Suresh Raina

Grade B (Rs 50 lakh/USD 79,000 approx): Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Ishant Sharma, M Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Umesh Yadav, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rohit Sharma

Grade C (Rs 25 lakh/USD 40,000 approx): Dinesh Karthik, Amit Mishra, Wriddhiman Saha, Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu, Vinay Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Jaydev Unadkat, Mohit Sharma

Zaheer Khan, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh find themselves out of a central contract for the 2013-14 season, while Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh find themselves downgraded in the BCCI’s retainer list, released on Thursday.Suresh Raina is the surprise inclusion among the five players in the highest grade; the others are captain MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, R Ashwin and Virat Kohli. The list also features five players who were not rewarded with a contract last year. They are Bhuvneshwar Kumar (Grade B), Mohammed Shami, Ambati Rayudu, Jaydev Unadkat and Mohit Sharma (all in Group C).Zaheer, Harbhajan and Sehwag: out of a central contract•Getty Images

While Zaheer and Sehwag featured in Grade A last year, Harbhajan was included in Grade B. ESPNcricinfo understands that they were axed because none of them is assured of a place in the team in any of the three formats. Their exclusion need not, however, be the end of their career, because BCCI rules say that any non-contracted player who features in any international match during the contract period is awarded a Grade C contract for the rest of the tenure.Ravindra Jadeja, Shikhar Dhawan and M Vijay have been upgraded from Grade C to B for their “exceptional” performance in the last contract cycle, while Rahane’s demotion on the reverse route was due to the fact that he has failed to make most of his limited opportunities.Tendulkar’s mention in Grade A may have raised quite a few eyebrows since the veteran batsman is making his last international appearance during India’s second Test against the West Indies. However, since the annual retainers are awarded on a pro-rata basis, Tendulkar would be eligible for two months’ compensation since the beginning of the retainer cycle in October. Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman were also named in the top category and were paid proportionately during the 2011-12 cycle. The list has been pruned from 37 last season to 25, the BCCI’s rationale apparently being that many players had started taking an annual retainer for granted. “The list was extended last year in order to give fringe players the confidence. But now the Board feels only those who are in line of an India call-up should be awarded an annual retainer,” a Board official said. The contracts, decided by a three-member committee of the BCCI comprising president (N Srinivasan), secretary (Sanjay Patel) and chairman of selectors (Sandeep Patil), run from October 1, 2013, to September 30, 2014.

Bracewell, Sodhi defy India A

Doug Bracewell and Ish Sodhi, Nos 9 and 10, defied India A with a 162-run partnership that stretched the New Zealand A innings to 437 on the second day of the second and final unofficial Test in Visakhapatnam. The home team were tottering at 16 for 2 in reply, but recovered to end the day on 94 for 2, still needing another 194 runs to make the visitors bat again.Bracewell, who had seven first-class fifties prior to this game, was four runs short of his maiden hundred when he fell to the captain Abhishek Nayar for 96. By then, he had already clubbed 11 fours and one six during his 132-ball stay. Sodhi, the Ludhiana-born legspinner, played the ideal foil to Bracewell’s aggression, and faced 10 more deliveries than his partner did to make his highest first-class score of 57, also his fourth fifty in the format in 16 innings.Having kept the Indians at bay for about 12 overs on the first evening, the duo proved difficult to remove for more than 31 overs on the second morning, before Nayar bowled Bracewell. Four deliveries later, Sodhi was caught by Unmukt Chand off Dhawal Kulkarni to end the innings in the 122nd over. New Zealand A had added nearly 400 runs after having been reduced to 43 for 4 on the first morning.Chand had his second failure of the series when he was caught behind for 4 in the fifth over off Mark Gillespie. After tormenting them with the bat, Bracewell delivered another blow to India A with the ball when he had Vijay Zol caught by Tom Latham for 2. Opener VA Jagadeesh and Manprit Juneja stabilized the innings thereafter. Both progressed to unbeaten forties by stumps, but the hosts still have a lot of work to do on the third day.

Australia A bowlers too good for Scotland

Peter Siddle scored his maiden first-class hundred and then the Australia A bowlers proved too much for Scotland who crumbled to 149. James Pattinson, one of a trio of likely Ashes bowlers in operation, claimed three wickets before the Australians opted for batting practice rather than a swift victory.Siddle, whose previous best was 87, had resumed on 85 and, as the Australians pressed for a declaration, he was given a life on 93 but a sparkling cover drive brought him his hundred.Scotland started their reply full of nerves with Josh Davey facing 15 deliveries before being caught behind for a duck. Matt Machan showed promise from the other end hitting a couple of fours off the bowling off Chad Sayers, but Freddie Coleman was run out by a superb direct hit from Nathan Lyon, and Richie Berrington soon followed, being clean bowled for 1 by Pattinson.Lyon, who could come under pressure for his Test berth if Fawad Ahmed is fast-tracked into the main squad, was given an early bowl and beat Machan in the flight. Moneeb Iqbal lost his off stump when he shouldered arms at Pattinson and Matthew Cross, the wicketkeeper, fell to Moises Henriques when he left his bat in the air while avoiding a bouncer. When Ashton Agar claimed two wickets Scotland were in tatters at 83 for 9.However, Callum MacLeod and Iain Wardlaw added a record 66 for the last wicket as they attacked the spinners, especially Lyon, although the offspinner finally ended their fun when MacLeod picked out deep square-leg the ball after reaching fifty.Australia opted not to force the follow-on to allow their top order, which had not been fluent in the first innings, another chance. Jordan Silk and Usman Khawaja edged to first slip but the lead swelled to nearly 400 by the close.

Adam Gilchrist: “I didn’t have the horrible desire that I was missing out”•AFP

Adam Gilchrist, the Kings XI Punjab captain, has said his playing career looks to be over. Gilchrist, who retired from international cricket in 2008, captained Deccan Chargers to the IPL title in 2009 and took over the leadership of Kings XI in 2011. The defeat against Delhi Daredevils in Dharamsala on Saturday, he said, was his last game, and added he would consider a full-time coaching role with Kings XI if offered; he’d been carrying the dual responsibility of captain and coach/mentor this season.”I would say I’ve played my last game of cricket just there,” Gilchrist said after the match. “I’ll go away and have a think about it and talk to the franchise. If the franchise is still keen to keep me involved as coach, which is a role I’ve really enjoyed, I find that I still enjoy being around the group. To be honest I didn’t miss the cricket that much.”I loved the fact that I could play the last couple of games, but I didn’t have the horrible desire that I was missing out. There isn’t that fire burning in my belly quite like it used to. I have to think about it but I just feel I won’t be playing.”Kings XI were shut out of contention for a place in the playoffs after they were beaten in their final league game by Daredevils. Gilchrist missed nearly a month of the IPL action this season due to a hamstring injury. “To miss the playoffs was disappointing. But there were some positives, especially the performance of some of the domestic players. Mandeep Singh, Gurkeerat Singh, Parvinder Awana… They’ve all done well and the exciting thing is that there’s still scope for them to learn, improve, develop and make that adjustment to the next level.”Gilchrist has played 67 IPL games, scoring 1775 runs at 27.73 and a strike-rate of 140.20. He’s scored two centuries and 10 fifties. Of his IPL experience, Gilchrist said: “The IPL will feature prominently in my memories of cricket. To come with a team that was last the previous year and win the title was very special (Deccan Chargers). One of the great memories of my cricket career was at this ground last year — that partnership (206 against Royal Challengers Bangalore) with Shaun (Marsh). So yeah, it has been a great experience.”

Clarke re-elected as ECB chairman

Giles Clarke has been rubber stamped as ECB chairman for a third term after the completion of the election process where he was the only candidate for the role. The 41 members of the ECB, which comprises the 18 first-class counties, 21 county boards, the MCC and the Minor Counties Cricket Association, returned Clarke as chairman for a third term which runs until the AGM in 2015.”I am honoured to be re-elected as Chairman of the ECB until 2015, and would like to thank the members for their continued confidence and support,” Clarke said. “We have a magnificent complement of players, fans, volunteers and staff representing our sport, from the grassroots structures to the top of the professional game. Their continued dedication and commitment to the sport is irreplaceable, and deeply appreciated by all those who love the game.”Before taking up the role of chairman, Clarke, as ECB chairman of marketing, was instrumental in the controversial deal that saw live television rights sold exclusively to Sky Sports in 2005. In January, he brokered an extended agreement, with Sky remaining the sole live broadcaster of cricket until 2017 after paying an estimated £260 million.Clarke recently settled his legal dispute with sports marketing company IMG out of court. IMG had brought a libel case against Clarke over an email he sent to the BCCI about meetings between the Indian board, IMG and several county representatives over what Clarke thought were discussions about forming an IPL-style competition in England.
