Dhoni unhappy with back-to-back games

Indian players looked tired and listless on the field against Bangladesh

Mahendra Singh Dhoni doesn’t usually complain at press conferences so his statements on Saturday night, after a match where India were visibly tired against a spirited Bangladesh, should make the game’s administrators sit up and take notice. “We were a bit disappointing, but one of the reasons for it is that we have played cricket for 36 of the last 84 hours,” Dhoni said. He didn’t mention the travel, the training sessions, the warm-ups, the cool-downs, the post-match presentations and the press conferences.”Back-to-back games make it really tough for the players. I am not really happy with the schedule: two teams are playing back-to-back games, and two teams are not. Under these conditions it is really tough, you are playing cricket throughout the year, and then you play back-to-back matches. You could make out from the start the intensity was not there.”India’s display in the field was characterised by Gautam Gambhir’s dropping of Tamim Iqbal early in the innings, and India’s pace bowlers, who have been their strength recently, performing below par. In the last 10 overs fielders and bowlers combined to allow Bangladesh to score 97 runs.It couldn’t have been India underestimating Bangladesh – at his pre-tournament press conference, when asked about the weak teams in the fray, Dhoni had specifically said Bangladesh shouldn’t be taken lightly.Dhoni’s statements beg the question of why a team must play on consecutive days – especially in the heat of June, the least natural time to play cricket on the subcontinent, when people won’t bother to come to the stadiums to watch anything less grand than India v Pakistan.Luckily for India, their chase of 283 saw two batsmen in superb form come together and Bangladesh, too, after an energetic fielding display for a few overs, showed they were just as tired by dropping two crucial catches. Suresh Raina and Gautam Gambhir matched each other shot for shot, including the chances they gave to the fielders.Gambhir, it seemed, had been waiting impatiently for his Bangladeshi friends. His last three innings against them now read 101, 107 not out, and 90. The first of these was only his second ODI century and came to be a turning point in a four-year career that hadn’t taken off till then. He latched on to them right from the start today and must have been disappointed not to get a third hundred against Bangladesh.Meanwhile it is getting increasingly difficult to get Raina off the National Stadium pitch, where he aggregates 301 from three innings. However it was not always like that; Raina has just made a comeback to the side after a not-so-impressive first stint.”Previously he was batting at No. 6 and No. 7,” Dhoni said of Raina. “You hardly get any chance there – especially in the subcontinent. If you are making your debut and batting at Nos. 6 and 7, on a good day you score 30 not out and on a bad day you get out for 10. Your average hardly ever crosses 25 then. And when you suddenly get to bat at the top and you fail once or twice, people say you have been around for a long time and give you some time at the domestic level. But what’s good is that he has come back very confident, he is playing in the “v”. And with the form and confidence he is in, he should continue with it.”Continuity is one thing India will be yearning for after the misadventure in the final of the Kitply Cup. And who knows it better than Dhoni, who has been playing almost non-stop for several years now. If he were to get injured, India don’t have any other back-up, except for Robin Uthappa who is hardly a regular. “I was tired on the field,” Dhoni said. “Not only me, every individual was tired.” But who’s listening?

Forest interested in Milad Mohammadi

Nottingham Forest are reportedly interested in a deal to sign Gent full-back Milad Mohammadi, according to a journalist Nick Mashiter.

What’s the story?

Mohammadi has been with the Belgian side since 2019, and has gone on to make 65 appearances in total for them over the years, and has also made a positive impact in their most recent campaign.

He made 41 appearances in the 2020/21 season, and chipped in with one goal and five assists for Gent, as they finished seventh in the Belgian top-flight.

It appears as though his strong showings haven’t gone unnoticed though, with Championship side Nottingham Forest being keen on reaching an agreement to land his signature ahead of the 2021/22 league campaign, which is set to get underway on Sunday 8th August against Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena.

It’s already been a summer of change at the City Ground for Forest boss Chris Hughton, with Yuri Ribeiro being among those to depart the club, as they prepare for the new Championship season.

The Athletic have also revealed that the Reds are open to offers for Gaetan Bong, which is likely to leave Hughton with a paper-thin amount of depth at full-back at this moment in time, which will be of slight concern to the City Ground faithful ahead of their season opener against Mark Robins’ side.

Journalist Nick Mashiter has revealed that Forest are rumoured to be keen on signing Mohammadi in the near future, but they also face competition from French side Stade Brest. The left-back has reportedly turned down offers from AEK and Hungarian side Ferencvaros.

He’d be an upgrade on Hughton’s current defensive option

It was a hugely frustrating season for Nottingham Forest last term, as they finished 17th in the second tier standings, and it’s clear to see that Hughton is keen to get new faces through the door in the near future.

Mohammadi is seemingly one of those that the club are believed to be targeting, and it’s a potential agreement that would make complete sense, especially given the fact that Forest aren’t exactly blessed with a considerable amount of depth in that area of their team.

With Gaetan Bong looking as though he’ll leave the club this summer, it only leaves Chris Hughton with Tyler Blackett as his only recognised senior option at left-back ahead of the new season. Blackett hasn’t exactly set the world alight at the City Ground either, with the former Manchester United youngster struggling to make a notable impact in his time with the club to date, having previously been on the books with fellow Championship side Reading.

Blackett was restricted to just 16 appearances in all competitions last term, and averaged just under one tackle per game, as well as an average of just 0.6 key passes per game, which doesn’t make for the best of reading for a left-back that is likely to be the only competition for Mohammadi, if he was to arrive this summer.

The 27-year-old is valued at £2.25million according to Transfermarkt, and Forest would certainly be making an upgrade on Blackett at left-back if they were to strike an agreement to sign Mohammadi, who is also an experienced international with Iran, having made over 40 appearances for his country over the years.

Tottenham: Paul Stewart wants Pedro Neto to replace Gareth Bale

Former Tottenham star Paul Stewart likes the idea of Pedro Neto joining his old side and replacing Gareth Bale, going as far as to say he would take the Wolves player over the Welshman.

Following the end of Bale’s loan and his return to parent club Real Madrid, Tottenham have been linked with Neto.

According to 90min, the north London club have made an enquiry as Wolves contemplate a sale.

Last season, Neto was one of Wolves’ best performers before picking up a serious knee injury. He scored five goals and provided six assists in the Premier League and came in for huge praise from pundits such as Jamie Redknapp.

“He’s got all the attributes to go right to the top,” Redknapp said on Sky Sports last year when discussing the 21-year-old.

As for Stewart, who is a Spurs hero after scoring in their 1991 FA Cup final win, when asked if he would take Neto as a replacement for Bale, he told TT:

“Yeah. I’d rather have him than Bale if I had the choice. Would I have both? Yeah, Gareth’s experience and I think he can do a job, but I just like the look of that Neto.”

As also referenced in that 90min report, Ruben Neves and Adama Traore could both be leaving Molineux this summer, so it would be a shock if Wolves sold those two then allowed Neto to go as well.

Rangers handed Joey Veerman boost

Rangers’ hopes of signing Joey Veerman this summer have been handed a boost after he opened the door to a move abroad following PSV Eindhoven’s decision to pull out of the race to sign him, which should put Steven Gerrard’s side amongst the favourites to land him from Heerenveen ahead of next season.

The 22-year-old has been linked with the likes of Rangers, PSV and Atalanta in recent months, but a move to the Eredivisie giants no longer seems to be on the cards after they signed Davy Propper from Brighton recently. Also, the Serie A club are set to complete a £17m deal for Teun Koopmeiners, which may quell their interest in the Ibrox target.

Veerman shared his disappointment at PSV’s preference for Propper, saying: “It’s just what kind of club comes along. I think it will be very difficult in the Netherlands, so there’s only one thing to do.

“As it looks now, I’m still at Heerenveen and I’m doing my best and nothing else is going on there.”

It has been previously reported that Veerman would cost Rangers £8.5m this summer, but given his superb performances in the Eredivisie in the last two seasons, he could add the Champions League quality that Gerrard needs ahead of their return to Europe’s elite club competition next term.

Former Rangers striker Michael Mols was full of praise for him when the links to Gerrard’s side first emerged, saying: “He is perfect with the ball and in possession, he’s a really great player. His passing and movement with the ball is really relaxed in a good way.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

Last season saw the 22-year-old contribute an impressive seven goals and 10 assists in just 31 Eredivisie appearances, earning a superb 7.40 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Given that the majority of Rangers’ goals last season came from their strikers, wingers and James Tavernier, a potent midfielder could be exactly what Gerrard needs to ensure that his side retains the Premiership title next season.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

Although Veerman will be an pricey option for the Gers, sporting director Ross Wilson should take advantage of PSV Eindhoven backing out and work quickly to bring Veerman to Ibrox this summer, as he could prove to be a superb addition in both the short- and long-term.

In other news… Gerrard could be set for major boost with “immense” £6.75m-rated “mountain”

Tottenham Hotspur: Lilywhites gain advantage in Isco chase

Tottenham Hotspur have gained an advantage over Arsenal as both clubs track Real Madrid attacking midfielder Isco, according to the Sunday Express.

The Lowdown: Spurs settle into life under Espirito Santo

Progressing towards 2021/22, many onlookers up and down the country will be intrigued to see how Nuno Espirito Santo revitalises a fragmented Spurs outfit going into the new season.

Although the Lilywhites haven’t secured any transfer targets as of yet, Takehiro Tomiyasu is said to be close to completing a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium [Football London].

Building ahead of pre-season, Spurs may be set to make progress in another pursuit following recent developments.

The Latest: Isco wants to move to a club competing in Europe next season

Isco is interested in a move to England, although he would prefer it to be to a team playing in Europe, according to the Sunday Express.

With both north London clubs keen on the 29-year-old, Spurs hold an advantage over their adversaries after qualifying for the inaugural Europa Conference League at the Gunners’ expense [Football London].

Real Madrid are looking to sell Isco this summer as his contract is set to expire in 12 months’ time. Not wanting to lose him on a free next summer, the La Liga giants could demand as little as £6m for his services. [Sunday Express]

The Verdict: Isco would be a marquee addition for Tottenham Hotspur

Upon reflection, the Spain international would be a marquee addition to the Tottenham fold. Renowned for his creative intuition, he would bring flair and a colourful nature to any starting XI.

Across his time in Madrid, Isco has registered 107 goal contributions in 336 appearances, with 51 goals and 56 assists [Transfermarkt].

He has been a major player in one of the most glorious eras in Los Blancos’ history, winning 16 trophies in his time at the Bernabeu – four Champions Leagues, two La Liga titles, four Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, two Spanish Super Cups and the Copa del Rey trophy [Transfermarkt].

In spite of this glittering CV, the Benalmádena-born attacker may be in need of a fresh challenge after only registering two assists from 28 goalless outings in 2020/21 [Transfermarkt].

Once described as ‘incredible’ by former Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta [FotMob], Tottenham could be the perfect platform for Isco to get his career back on an upward trajectory.

Kalvin Phillips linked with Leeds exit

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has been linked with a shock summer move to Juventus, as his reputation continues to soar.

The Lowdown: Phillips shines for England

The 25-year-old has been exceptional for the Whites over a sustained period now, playing a major role in them returning to the Premier League.

Phillips has taken his club form with him to the international stage, producing a Man of the Match performance in England’s Euro 2020 opener against Croatia last weekend.

The midfielder is again expected to start when the Three Lions face Scotland on Friday night, looking a key man for the rest of the tournament.

The Latest: Juventus linked with move

Phillips’ form has seen his stock rise hugely in a short space of time and Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid have been linked with signing him.

Now, Juventus are also believed to be in the mix, with Tutto Juve claiming that the Serie A are keeping tabs on his current situation.

Manchester City and Tottenham are also mentioned as potential suitors, in what could become a bidding war for the Leeds hero.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-copy-2/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Expect him to stay put

The current links are predictable, considering Phillips is shining on a huge stage, but it would be a major shock if he departed Elland Road this summer.

He is a loyal player who will surely believe he still has unfinished business with the club who raised him, as they look to push towards the European places next season.

Should Leeds struggle to kick on in the next year or so, Phillips may then eye up a fresh challenge at a Champions League club. But for now he appears to be perfectly happy, and if he keeps performing like he is, the price will only increase from here, so there is no rush to cash in.

Josh Griffiths tipped to join Portsmouth

West Brom goalkeeper Josh Griffiths would be a ‘great signing’ for Portsmouth this summer, according to former Pompey midfielder David Norris.

The Lowdown: Griffiths linked with Pompey move

The 19-year-old enjoyed a superb 2020/21 season, shining on loan at Cheltenham Town and helping them finish the League Two campaign as champions.

Griffiths started 44 of their 46 league matches, proving to be an influential figure and being hailed as ‘brilliant’ by manager Michael Duff.

The youngster has been linked with a move to Pompey this summer as Danny Cowley looks to steer his side into the Championship.

The Latest: Norris keen on goalkeeper signing

Speaking to Football League World, Norris talked up the idea of Griffiths moving to Fratton Park, saying that he could be a great addition for the League One side. The 40-year-old stated:

“I think he’d be a great signing, Cheltenham had a very good defensive record when he was there.

“They kept a lot of clean sheets with him in the team, you know, over 20 clean sheets. So they obviously had a decent keeper in their side, so I think that would be a good signing for the club to make.”

The Verdict: Potential great addition

Griffiths seems to be a wonderful prospect, already thriving at such a young age in a position where players can often peak into their 30s.

He could be an exciting signing by Pompey if they pull it off, replacing Craig MacGillivray after his move to Charlton Athletic and aiding a hopeful promotion push.

Griffiths is still only a teenager and the step up to League One could be significant at this stage in his career, but he showed such confidence at Cheltenham that this seems the next natural step for him.

Newcastle must land Adam Armstrong

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley must sanction a £20m swoop for Blackburn Rovers striker Adam Armstrong amid a major transfer update on the 24-year-old.

What’s the story?

Previous reports had suggested that Steve Bruce’s side were leading the race to sign Armstrong, a move which would see him make his return to St James’ Park.

The Daily Express have now claimed that the Magpies’ Premier League rivals Southampton have now jumped ahead of the pack, with Rovers are demanding a £20m fee to sell him this summer.

The report adds that talks have already been held with his intermediaries, so time is running out for Newcastle to bring Armstrong back to Tyneside should they wish to do so.

He’s ready for Newcastle

Former Newcastle player Steve Howey has previously thrown his weight behind a potential return for Armstrong, even insisting that the striker himself would “relish” the opportunity to play in the black and white of Newcastle again.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast’s sister site Football Transfer Tavern, he said: “I think he’d relish the chance of coming back and he’d be desperate to score goals because he is a goalscorer and we’ve seen him score some excellent goals from Blackburn.

“I think he’d be desperate for the chance to come back but it’s just whether the club are prepared to make that move.”

At Blackburn, Armstrong has turned into a real goalscoring revelation, realising the kind of potential which marked him out as a potential star back at Newcastle – this season saw him score a remarkable 28 goals in just 40 Championship games, despite Rovers finishing mid-table in the division and well off the play-off places.

His manager Tony Mowbray gushed: “He’s a goalscorer. He always has been. I took him to Coventry because I saw him score some amazing goals for England Under-19s. He scores off both feet, he’s electrically fast off the mark, he’s got all the attributes.

“As long as you’ve got players who can slide him in, put passes over the top, put the ball in space for him he’ll score goals. His explosive pace at the top end of the pitch allows you to play both ways. it’s a devastating effect for the team.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/newcastle-united-steve-bruce-premier-league-magpies-transfer-gossip-rumours-news-st-james-park-mike-ashley-takeover-pif” title=”Read the latest Newcastle transfer rumours and news!”]

Given how Armstrong has developed and grown since leaving St James’ Park, Ashley must surely look to sanction a move for the striker and watch him bang in the goals back at his former club.

Meanwhile, Newcastle must avoid giving this man a new contract at St James’ Park…

Liverpool fans laud Thiago’s brilliance

A number of Liverpool supporters have been hailing Thiago’s brilliance following a hugely influential end to the season for the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp’s men may have experienced a difficult campaign, but they ended it in strong fashion, sealing a third-placed finish in the Premier League. Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, coupled with Chelsea and Leicester City losing, completed an achievement which looked highly unlikely back in March after they had lost six successive home games.

[freshpress-quiz id=“355458″]

The Reds won eight and drew two of their final 10 league matches, with a number of players going up a gear having disappointed earlier in the season. One of those was Thiago, who was arguably the exceptional performer in the latter weeks of 2020/21, playing brilliantly against Palace once again.

The 30-year-old posted a 91% passing accuracy rate and played nine accurate long balls yesterday, along with winning five tackles and 12 duels in a fantastic all-round performance (Sofascore).

The Spaniard posted on his Twitter page after Sunday’s win, admitting that it has been a strange season but one which ultimately ended well.
