Kai Kennedy could soon stake his claim at Glasgow Rangers

Glasgow Rangers have churned out plenty of talented teenagers from the academy ranks in recent years, including current Chelsea star Billy Gilmour, but none may be as exciting as Kai Kennedy.

The Rangers loanee, who is currently on loan at Inverness Caledonian Thistle, could join the ever-reliable Ryan Kent as an alternative option on the left wing.

Standing at 5 foot 4 inches, the 18-year-old isn’t exactly the biggest player on the pitch, but he has been described as a “fabulous little player” by Steven Gerrard.

The Rangers boss has insisted that the sky is the limit for the Scotland U19 international. He told The Daily Record: “He earned the right to be the 19th man. His training performances and his cameo against Leicester – I was thinking about putting him in the 18. All of our lads at the academy should take note of what he’s done this week. I think he’s been outstanding.

“He’s been the most consistent and he’s a fabulous little player. It wasn’t just a token gesture because he’s a kid.

“It’s also to send a message to some of the players who are outside of the 18 that Kai was next from what I seen the majority of this week in training. He deserved to be out there.”

Kennedy has also admitted his excitement at one day playing for the club, he said: “I can’t wait, I am just buzzing to get on the pitch at Ibrox and I think all the boys are as well and I hope there is a good atmosphere,” he told Rangers TV.

“Going down to Solihull was good in the last round, the atmosphere was great for us and I think on Saturday the atmosphere should be good as well and we are all looking forward to it.

“The boys are all confident, we have had good results so far in the Youth League and in this cup and I think you can tell that all the boys are confident and we are playing well at the moment.”

The fact that Kennedy has made it clear that he wants to play at Ibrox as much as he possibly can should thrill Rangers fans, especially when you consider the fact that Kent continues to be linked with a move away from the club, amid interest from Leeds United.

The teenager just needs to be guaranteed game time, which is something Gerrard has been unable to provide so far.

On Saturday afternoon, Kennedy made his debut for Caley, coming off the bench for the final 19 minutes. It’s small steps, but encouraging ones at that.

Glasgow legend Barry Ferguson has heaped praise on the prodigy in the past and urged him to stay with Gerrard’s side despite recent reports suggesting that he could be destined for the exit.

“A lot of these young players have advisors who maybe try and push them a bit too quickly,” Ferguson told PLZ Soccer.

“I like young players to stay about and fight for a place. There’s no doubt the young kid has huge potential so I would like him to stay about. At this stage in his career it’s not about money.

“We’ve seen it with various young players moving far too quick for my liking, I’d like to see him stay for a while longer.”

High praise indeed from one of the club’s greatest players of all time.

Now they just need to reach a resolution with his representatives, which will be no easy task. However, if he can impress at Caley Thistle, it may not be too long before he is challenging Kent for a spot in the squad.

Everton: Fans hammer Bernard tweet

Everton continued their poor recent form with a 3-1 loss against Manchester United, their third loss in a row, despite a goal from Bernard giving the Toffees the lead.

The Brazilian international’s low strike past David de Gea put Carlo Ancelotti’s side ahead at Goodison Park, but that was as good as it got for Everton. Bruno Fernandes then netted twice before Edinson Cavani bagged in the last minute of injury-time to give the Red Devils all three points.

Whilst his side may have been defeated, Bernard was still happy with his strike, taking to Twitter to share a video of his goal with the caption: “A finish that deserved to count for something”.

Given how the match ended, it is hardly surprising that Everton fans were disgusted with Bernard’s comments. They took to the social media platform to share their anger.

Let’s see what they had to say about Bernard below

Coventry: Three-club race for Wolves youngster Owen Otasowie

Coventry City have joined Luton Town and Peterborough in the race to sign talented Wolverhampton Wanderers youngster Owen Otasowie.

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins has been busy already this summer in bolstering his squad options, bringing in the likes of Gustavo Hamer, Julien Dacosta, Marcel Hilssner, Callum O’Hare and Ryan Giles.

Preparing his side for the Championship next term after gaining promotion from League One as champions, Robins has now been credited with interest in young Wolves talent Otasowie.

The youngster, who was born in New York and has represented his country twice at under-18 level, has been featuring for the Premier League club’s under-23 side.

The 19-year-old’s impressions have gained interest from Luton and Peterborough with Peterborough Telegraph reporting that interest and it is now claimed that Coventry are also keen.

Aside from featuring at under-23 level this term for Wolves, Otasowie has also made a single appearance for the Premier League side’s first team, playing in the Europa League against Turkish side Besiktas.

The report goes on to add that any potential deal for the youngster to go to Luton, Peterborough or Coventry would be a loan deal.

Otasowie has not been able to break into the Wolves first team since appearing in the Europa League and it does seem like a loan deal is the best move for his development.

Coventry would do no harm in bringing the United States youngster in, even if he grabs a handful of appearances, as it would add to their squad depth.

Do you think Otasowie would be a good signing for Coventry? Let us know in the comments section below…

Leeds’ QSI takeover looking less likely after Phil Hay update

Leeds United’s season has been enough of a rollercoaster as it is, but one sub-plot that has consistently run alongside their campaign has been rumours of a potential investment from Qatar.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been over a year since the first links between PSG’s owners purchasing a stake in Leeds were reported, but despite so much time passing, things still haven’t been concluded one way or another.

With Leeds finally being promoted to the Premier League they’re now a much more alluring club to any potential investor due to the sheer amount of money that comes alongside being in the top-flight, and it didn’t take long for fans to start asking about QSI after their promotion was confirmed.

What’s been said then?

Phil Hay hosted a special Q&A session after United’s promotion, and one of the key talking points amongst the fanbase was the QSI rumours.

Fortunately, the journalist gave an important update on the situation with the investment group, and unfortunately, it’s not good news for anyone hoping Leeds would be taken over sooner rather than later.

“Every time I ask about QSI, people at Leeds shake their heads. They just don’t see it (although I’d never say never because of the relationship between Radrizzani and Al-Khelaifi). People think a further investment from the 49ers is more likely – but would AR really want to dilute his shareholding just as he’s hit the big time?” Hay wrote.

Not a bad thing

It doesn’t seem as though PSG’s owners have any immediate plans to buy the Yorkshire club, with figures at Elland Road believing it to be unlikely, but there is a silver lining here.

The 49ers could increase their stake in the club, and that may be a good thing for Leeds.

The San Francisco 49ers group’s sporting business sense seems to be spot on. John Lynch was named as 2019’s NFL executive of the year for the work he did in American Football’s equivalent of the transfer market.

It’s paid off on the field as well with the California-based outfit reaching the Super Bowl at the end of the season, and if they can employ the same sort of strategies to a similar effect at Elland Road, they could be just as good as QSI, even if they don’t spend the same type of money.

Victor Orta mustn’t fall into the same trap for a third time this summer

Leeds United may have a very busy summer ahead of them.

The Whites look to be headed to the Premier League, sitting pretty at the top of the Championship with just four games to go, and with a huge financial windfall headed their way if they do go up, it may soon be time for Andrea Radrizzani to get his chequebook out.

United haven’t had the best fortune when it comes to signing new players over the past couple of seasons, and the blame has to at least partially lie at Victor Orta’s feet.

The Spaniard has headed up the recruitment team at Elland Road for the past few years now, and while he has knocked it out of the park with some arrivals such as Liverpool-linked Ben White and their leading assist-maker Jack Harrison, there has also been a fair share of flops.

Two players that immediately spring to mind when you think of recent Leeds flops are Izzy Brown and Jean-Kevin Augustin. Both men arrived on loan but barely got a look-in due to their substandard fitness levels.

Augustin came in and was almost immediately criticised for not being up to scratch physically, and unfortunately, a string of injuries would hamper him, meaning that even with a three-month break he wasn’t able to get up to speed, eventually being sent back to RB Leipzig before the season even concluded.

Brown was a similar story, joining with a serious knee injury that he never really recovered from, playing just 11 minutes for the Yorkshire club last season, before returning to his parent club.

Now, both of these men are quite obviously talented, Brown has seven assists in 25 appearances this term, while the Frenchman has scored goals in the Champions League.

Unfortunately, the timing of these two deals turned them into poor transfers, and that is a trap that Leeds can’t afford to fall into again.

To put it bluntly, Orta and his team need to perform more due diligence on potential signings upon the club’s ascension to the Premier League because signing more big-money crocks after promotion could see United swiftly sent back to the Championship.

Everton must move quickly if they want Mikel Arteta as manager

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Mirror, Mikel Arteta is a target for Everton as they eye up Marco Silva’s possible successor should he depart Goodison Park.

However, Moshiri and co will have to act quickly if they do indeed want to bring the former Toffee back to Merseyside.

What’s the word?

Marco Silva has proven to be a troubled figure in the dugout this season as mixed results have plagued their campaign.

A woeful 2-0 defeat against Norwich looks as though it could be the final nail in the coffin for the Portuguese as Everton now sit 16th, just four points above the drop zone.

A host of targets have reportedly been lined up but according to The Mirror, Mikel Arteta is one of them. The 37-year-old made 209 appearances as a player for Everton but he isn’t the only ex-Toffee on their radar.

David Moyes also appears to be in the running, alongside Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe.

Must act quickly

There is a degree of sense to Moshiri biding his time with a new manager – especially after the failed reigns of Sam Allardyce and now Silva.

However, if Everton want to land Arteta they’ll have to act incredibly quickly. This would go away from the tactic the Toffees board have seemingly put in place but it could be worth it.

After all, this is a coach that’s been given glowing reviews by two of the most successful managers to have graced the touchline.

Back in May 2018, Arsene Wenger had the following to say about the Spaniard: “He was a leader, has good passion for the game, knows the club and knows what is important at the club. Overall he has the qualities [to be a manager].”

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola has also been full of praise for a man who is currently his assistant at Manchester City. He commented this week:

“But I think that the holding midfielder is an incredible lesson during your period as a football player. You don’t need to go to school. More than that he is an incredible human being and works a lot. I said after a few months together he would be a manager. He is already a manager – he behaves like a manager.”

Those comments say a lot about the type of man Arteta is, but with Arsenal lurking, it might not be easy to prise him away from City so soon.

The Gunners held talks with the former player before hiring Unai Emery last year while it’s been reported that they could be willing to re-enter the market for his services in the near future.

That could be a major stumbling block in any plans Everton have to bring him back to Merseyside. If Moshiri wants him, sacking Silva now and moving imminently for the Spaniard would be wise.

If Arsenal part ways with Emery, he may not be available for too much longer.

Meanwhile, check out how Everton fans responded to reports linking them with a return for David Moyes…

Liverpool sale of Dominic Solanke was timed to perfection

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Since joining Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp has made 18 first-team signings, and very few have failed to work out.

Those new arrivals include the likes of Virgil van Dijk, who joined from Southampton in January 2018, and has since gone on to finish in second place in the Ballon d’Or, whilst Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, two more recruits brought in by the 52-year-old boss, finished fourth and fifth this year respectively.

The list doesn’t stop there either. Andrew Robertson has become a creative force at left-back, picking up 13 assists last term, whilst Georginio Wijnaldum was also nominated for the Ballon d’Or this year.

Dominic Solanke, however, was one of the few transfers that didn’t work out. The striker joined on a free transfer from Chelsea in 2017, and would go on to make 27 appearances for the Reds. In that time, he managed just one goal and one assist, before moving to Bournemouth in January of this year. Incredibly, the Cherries decided to pay £19m for his services, which is perplexing considering he had just eight goals in 54 professional matches at that point.

It is fair to say that it is a transfer that hasn’t worked out. He has signed featured 25 times for Eddie Howe’s side, and he is still waiting for his first goal on the south coast, whilst he has only managed one assist. In fact, not only has it not worked out – it has been a full-on disaster.

Letting him go was clearly the correct decision, but it is the timing of his departure for which Klopp deserves credit. It was already apparent at that point in the term that the 22-year-old did not have a future at Anfield. He had made just one appearance up until his departure, showing that he clearly wasn’t a part of his manager’s plans.

Yet he was still at the age where there was a thought that he still had a big future ahead of him. His record at youth level was impressive – he has nine goals in 18 appearances for England’s U21s, and he scored 35 in 45 matches for the Blues’ various youth outfits – which will have given Howe hope that he could become a star. Had the Merseyside team left it any longer, that buzz around him may have died down, and during the summer, Bournemouth would have had a bigger selection of forwards to choose from. A player that spent most of his time on the bench or with the U23s would surely not have been at the top of their shopping list.

Real Reds will get full marks: Take the ultimate Liverpool quiz below…

It is just another example of the former Borussia Dortmund manager’s genius. In football, timing is everything, and Klopp’s watch is finely in tune.

Meanwhile, the sale of this Premier League striker was one of Jurgen Klopp’s few mistakes.

Southampton fans praise Jack Stephens’ performance at Manchester City

Many Southampton fans were left impressed by Jack Stephens’ performance against Manchester City on Saturday, and praising the centre-half’s display on social media.Stephens had not started a Premier League game since the Saints’ opening day defeat at Burnley, but returned to the fold in the south coast side’s devastating 9-0 beating to Leicester City as a half-time change for Danny Ings. The Torpoint-born centre-half also featured in the opening line-up against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, and maintained his role for the Premier League trip to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.Stephens’ latest performance started promisingly when he blocked an early Kevin De Bruyne effort, and would mirror his afternoon by denying Sergio Aguero from finding the back of the net in the 84th-minute.Alex McCarthy, replacing a benched Angus Gunn, would be beaten twice, though, with Aguero and Kyle Walker firing past the 29-year-old to overturn James Ward-Prowse’s 13th-minute opening strike.Despite the Sky Blues’ goals, Stephens impressed many Southampton fans, as he displayed a performance that suggested he might have turned a corner from the questionable displays they felt he had previously produced.Stephens recorded the second-most clearances at the Etihad with 15 to Jannik Vestergaard’s 17, as well as a joint-game high two interceptions and was successful with one of his two recorded tackles, per WhoScored data. The £7.2million-rated defender also won each of his four aerial duels, and completed more passes than all Southampton players bar Nathan Redmond, Oriol Romeu and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Here are some of the messages shared on his performance…
