Hong Kong through to finals

A round-up of action from the World Cricket League Division Three tournament in Hong Kong

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jan-2011Hong Kong beat table-toppers Papua New Guinea by 93 runs at the Hong King Cricket Club to qualify for Friday’s final in the ICC World Cricket League Division Three, where they will play PNG again. Hong Kong’s win also mean they are guaranteed promotion to WCL Div. 2.PNG, who chose to field, had Hong Kong in trouble early on as Rarva Dikana and Hitolo Areni picked up three wickets to reduce Hong Kong to 39 for 3 in the 11th over. However, Hussain Butt, who top-scored with 68 was involved in two crucial 40-plus stands with Irfan Ahmed (25) and Nizakat Khan (36) to take Hong Kong past 100. Areni struck to dismiss Nizakat and Waqas Barkat in quick succession but Butt and captain Najeeb Amar put on 53 runs in just under 10 overs to get the Hong Kong innings back on track. Butt was dismissed with the score on 196 but Nadeem Ahmed hit some big shots to take Hong King to 221 before they were bowled out.Hong Kong’s bowlers then defended the total, bowling PNG out cheaply. Tony Ura and Kila Pala were the only two batsmen who managed to get past 20, as PNG failed to string together any substantial partnerships and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Nadeem picked up three wickets as PNG were bowled out for 128 in just under 48 overs.”We talked about how we could beat PNG today and knew if we batted first it would be important to make as many runs as possible before our bowlers could get to work on the PNG side,” said Hong Kong coach Charlie Burke.”The important thing for us was to remain focussed and we knew by putting PNG under pressure the side would become vulnerable which they did today. We beat them in a warm-up game without our full strength squad so we knew we had the ability today to beat them, and our ability and strength showed today.”There are plenty of quality sides in Division 2 but my focus since taking this role has been about securing promotion. We have the promotion but this league isn’t over and we want to win the entire tournament in front of our home crowd before we focus our attention to the new challenges and teams Division 2 will throw at us,” said Burke.”We’re obviously disappointed with our play and commitment in the loss to Hong Kong today,” added PNG captain Dikana. “Today was Hong Kong’s final as they battled for survival in the tournament and they were the better side on the day. Congratulations to a well prepared side that fought hard and showed strong spirit.”We have a rematch to see who will take home the title of Division Three champions and I know my team have the ability to take the trophy home to PNG as the best side in the tournament. Our complete focus is on tomorrow as we take one step at a time. Tomorrow is a new ball game.”

Two aggressive half-centuries from Hemin Desai and Vaibhav Wategaonkar carried Oman to a commanding four-wicket win over Denmark at the Kowloon Cricket Club, but it was not enough to allow Oman to qualify for the final.Denmark were sent in to bat and got off to a shaky start, losing their openers with just 38 runs on the board. Carsten Pedersen and Rizwan Mahmood steadied the innings with a 66-run partnership but once Mahmood was dismissed with the score on 104, Denmark suffered a collapse. Rajesh Kumar and Khalid Rashid picked up three wickets apiece as Denmark slumped from 104 for 3 to 181 all out in just under 48 overs.Oman needed to knock the runs off quickly if they were to keep their hopes of qualifying for the final alive. Desai and Zeeshan Siddiqui got them off to a rapid start, adding 34 runs in 2 overs before Siddiqui was dismissed. Desai and Wategaonkar then blasted 41 runs in 17 balls. Desai fell for 51 off just 17 balls with five fours and five sixes. Wategaonkar added another rapid 22 with Adnan Ilyas before Bashir Shah had Ilyas stumped. Oman seemed to lose momentum after his dismissal. Though they reached their target in just under 25 overs with Wategaonkar unbeaten on 54, Hong Kong went ahead of their run-rate by beating PNG to destroy Oman’s hopes of qualifying for the final.

USA’s hopes of qualifying for WCL Div. 2 were ended by Italy, who beat them by four wickets at the Mission Road Ground. Italy will now go on to play Oman in the third-place playoff while USA will play for fifth place against Denmark.Italy got off to a shaky start in their chase of 223, slumping to 52 for 4, but a 102-run partnership between Peter Petricola and wicketkeeper Hayden Patrizi got them back into the game. After Patrizi was out for 50, Michael Raso came in and smashed 38 off 29 deliveries, and Italy got home with 18 balls to spare. Petricola was unbeaten on 69.Petricola had also been Italy’s most successful bowler, taking four wickets as Italy restricted USA to 222 for 8. USA captain Steve Massiah scored 52 and opener Sushil Nadkarni scored 47, but USA didn’t get to a big enough total.”Along with the entire team, I am hugely disappointed to be relegated back to Division Four,” said Massiah. “We didn’t prepare for this tournament as well as we have done in other events and our performances here were nothing like what we know we are capable of when we play cricket.”Certain things didn’t go our way this tournament and we now need to go back to the USA and rethink our strategy and how we are going to bounce back from this and rebuild our team to climb back up the leagues.”

Mirpur capacity slashed for New Zealand ODIs

The Sher-e-Bangla National stadium in Mirpur is likely to operate at less than half its capacity during the one-day series between Bangladesh and New Zealand in October because of ongoing renovation work ahead of the 2011 World Cup.The official capacity of the stadium – which will host six World Cup matches, including two quarterfinals – is 26,000 but the BCB will issue a maximum of 10,000 tickets for each match of the New Zealand series. Of these, around 2000-3000 will be complimentary tickets, leaving only 7,000-8,000 seats for the general public.”For the greater interest, we have to accept some difficulties for the coming series,” Gazi Ashraf Hossain, the BCB’s director and tour organising secretary, told the . “Within a very short time we will get a guideline from the local organising committee about the capacity for the series. But the number will not be more than 10,000.”The first ODI between New Zealand and Bangladesh will be played on October 5.

Mohammad Amir earns sympathy amid scandal

Former Pakistan captain, Ramiz Raja, and the former coach, Geoff Lawson, have both spoken out in defence of Mohammad Amir, Pakistan’s 18-year-old fast bowler whose alleged involvement in the Lord’s spot-fixing scandal is threatening to destroy his burgeoning career.Amir was a revelation during the recent four-Test series against England, in which he collected 19 wickets at 18.36 and proved unplayable at times in helpful swinging conditions. He picked up consecutive five-wicket hauls in the final two Tests, including a career-best 6 for 84 in England’s only innings at Lord’s.However, on the eve of the final day of the series, he was one of four players – along with his captain Salman Butt and fellow new-ball bowler Mohammad Asif – to be named by The News of the World in an alleged scam involving bowling no-balls to order, a situation that has led many commentators, including England’s former captain, Michael Vaughan, to call for a life ban. However, Ramiz and Lawson both expressed sympathy for Amir, and believed the greater blame lay with the men who had led him astray so early in his career. “To see an 18-year old boy being dragged into the controversy is the worse part,” Ramiz told Cricinfo. “He had the world, everyone was raving about the talent and praising him. It is such a sad moment in cricket.”Amir comes from a humble background,” Ramiz said. “He is 18, with an impressionable mind, and if he has been keeping bad company, it’s possible he could have been drawn [into wrongdoing]. But if that’s the case, then the guys who got him in should be put behind bars because they’ve spoilt a grand career. They’ve infiltrated and spoilt a young mind, and it’s such a shocking state of affairs.”Lawson, who coached Pakistan for 15 months between July 2007 and October 2008, said: “For me, it would be a great tragedy if a young man such as Amir, a shining light of hope, has been led astray.” But he also added that Pakistan’s socio-economic situation needed to be taken into account before rushing in to judge the alleged actions of its cricketers.”We must remember that we are judging these guys by the standards of our own country, when their situations are vastly different,” Lawson told The Age in Melbourne. “The first time I met Mohammad Amir was when he was 16, coming to an Under-19s camp. He comes from a small village near the Swat valley and was delayed by three hours because the Taliban had closed the highway. That doesn’t happen in this country.””One thing that struck me about Amir was his constant smile, his zest for the game,” he said. “That has not changed. I will never condone any form of fixing, but we should consider that a cricketer might not be thinking of personal gain but of getting money to buy a generator for his village because they don’t have electricity.”I don’t think Pakistan should be banished, we have seen it survive some incredible on and off-field turmoil,” Lawson said. “But I will say that the present Pakistan administration cannot escape some of the blame for this. What they need right now is positive leadership and they don’t have it.”When I was there the board did not have people with vested interests, they were business people who treated people fairly, remunerated the players well. The first-class players were looked after and paid well and it made a difference. The [current] Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt is not a leader, he should not have the job, he is incapable.”

Ervine century puts Zimbabwe in control

by 291 runs
Scorecard
Craig Ervine’s century was the centerpiece of Zimbabwe XI’s competitive first-innings total at the VRA ground in Amstelveen. Though there weren’t any big scores from any of the other batsmen, Ervine’s third first-class hundred pushed Zimbabwe to nearly 300 against Netherlands on the first day.Zimbawe were in early trouble after choosing to bat losing their first three wickets for eight runs by the third over. All three early wickets were taken by medium-pacer Berend Westdijk, who was playing only his third first-class match. However, opener Stuart Matsikenyeri and Ervine prompted a recovery by adding 80 runs for the third wicket before Matsikenyeri was lbw.Ervine was involved in a couple of other substantial partnerships, both of which he dominated – 83 with Ed Rainsford for the sixth and 75 with wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva for the seventh. Ervine was then dismissed for 145, following which there were two more quick wickets and Zimbabwe finished up on 298.The Netherlands reply got off to a poor start in the five overs they have to face before stumps. Nick Statham was run out without facing a ball, and the other opener Eric Szwarczynski was bowled by Natsai Mushangwe in the fourth over as Netherlands ended the day on 7 for 2.

Everton: Woodgate rips into Richarlison

Richarlison was ‘hugely disrespectful’ to the travelling Everton supporters following Sunday’s defeat against West Ham United.

That’s according to BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Jonathan Woodgate, speaking live on air.

The lowdown

Everton lost 2-1 at the London Stadium to deepen their relegation fears ahead of Wednesday’s crunch encounter with Burnley.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-3/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Aaron Cresswell and Jarrod Bowen scored either side of a deflected Mason Holgate effort to give the Hammers victory against Frank Lampard’s side, who were reduced to 10 men with 25 minutes left when Michael Keane picked up a second yellow card.

Richarlison started on the left of Frank Lampard’s front three, joining Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Demarai Gray in the attack, and completed the full 90 minutes.

However, Woodgate spotted the Brazilian walking straight down the tunnel following the full-time whistle rather than going over to acknowledge the travelling fans.

The latest

Woodgate said that Richarlison really ought to ‘go and clap’ the fans after the game, many of whom would have made a 200+ mile journey from Merseyside.

He accused the 24-year-old of immaturity, claiming that he was effectively throwing his ‘toys out the pram’.

The verdict

Perhaps Richarlison’s frustration got the better of him. He had chances to score what could have been a crucial goal, but two of shots were off target, and the other three were blocked.

Journalist James Nalton wrote that the 24-year-old ‘should have done better’ with the opportunities he was given, picking out instances where he could have teed up Vitaliy Mykolenko or finished a chance created for him by Alex Iwobi.

It has been a difficult season for the £90,000-per-week forward in general, as reflected by his tally of just four goals. For comparison, in each of his first two years at Everton, he struck 13 times in the Premier League (via Transfermarkt).

If some Toffees supporters are upset with Richarlison, then maybe he will be able to redeem himself by tucking a chance away at Turf Moor in midweek.

Flower ton trumps Payne seven-for

Essex 267 beat Gloucestershire 225 by 42 runs
ScorecardDavid Payne served up the best-ever figures by a Gloucestershire bowler inLimited-overs cricket but still finished on the losing side in their CB40 match with Essex at Chelmsford.Payne, a 19-year-old left-arm paceman, claimed 7 for 29, including four wickets in as many balls, but was unable to prevent a 42-run defeat. Thanks to a superb 116 by Grant Flower and a swashbuckling 84 from Ryan tenDoeschate, Essex posted 267 all out, to which the visitors responded with 225 in 37.3 overs.Essex lost their last five wickets in a remarkable 40th over bowled by Payne. He took wickets with the first four deliveries, including that of Flower who was caught on the long-off boundary after collecting 11 fours and one six in his 103-ball effort. Chris Marshall was then run out from the last ball of the innings.Having got rid of Ten Doeschate and Graham Napier in his previous over, itmeant that Payne had picked up six wickets in the space of eight deliveries. But his efforts were to go unrewarded because of the magnificent partnership between Flower and Ten Doeschate who came together following the dismissal of Alastair Cook for 37.His departure came in the 20th over at which point Gloucestershire lookedfirmly in control. But the fourth-wicket pair were to take the initiative away from the visitors with a stand of 166 in 18 overs.Ten Doeschate was especially ruthless as he plundered 84 from 53 balls. It was a contribution that contained nine fours and two sixes and was brought to an end when he was caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper Jonathan Batty.By then the 39-year-old Flower had completed his second successive CB40 century at Chelmsford as he again confirmed what a superb batsman hestill is in the one-day game.Gloucestershire were soon in trouble when they replied, losing Batty and James Franklin in the first couple of overs. William Porterfield and Hamish Marshall revived them with a partnership of 81 in a dozen overs but never really looked a dominating force. Both were dismissed by left-arm spinner Tim Phillips, Porterfield departing for 65 from 64 balls when he put up a simple return catch after striking nine boundaries. After that, Gloucestershire’s challenge faded, despite anaggressive innings from Steve Snell. He struck a belligerent 57 from 42 deliveries before he was last out, but he was never able to mount a serious threat to Essex’s imposing total.

Everton could swoop in for Garner

Everton have been very active already in the winter transfer window, securing the signings of two young defenders, Nathan Patterson and Vitaliy Mykolenko, while Rafa Benitez is rumoured to already have his eye on his third young player to bring into the team.

What’s the word?

According to journalist, Pete O’Rourke, Everton are eyeing up a potential move for Nottingham Forest’s James Garner in the January transfer window.

O’Rourke put out a tweet to his followers on Friday morning;

“Everton are eyeing a move for Manchester United midfielder James Garner who has impressed again on loan at Nottingham Forest in the first half of the season. #EFC #MUFC #NFFC”

The £3.6m-rated gem, who was previously hailed as “impressive” by team mate, Fred, is on loan from his parent club, Manchester United, at Nottingham Forest for a second season, and is rumoured to be catching the eye of the Merseyside club thanks to his impressive performances in the Championship, that have helped to put the side just six points shy of a playoff place.

Fans will be buzzing

Adding young prospects to the side is always a move that will leave fans buzzing, especially in this case, when you look at how well Garner is getting on at Forest this season.

The midfielder, who is originally from Birkenhead in Merseyside, has been putting on great performances, scoring five goals and bagging one assist from his central defensive position in the side since he joined on loan just under a year ago.

According to SofaScore, the defensive midfielder has been successful in an impressive 73% of his dribbles and has won a 52% majority of his duels, midfield attributes that could really benefit this defensively poor Everton side.

The Toffees have been leaking goals more than they have been scoring them in the Premier League this season, and adding that extra cover alongside Allan in midfield could really work wonders when attempting to control games better, especially when their current ball possession average is 39.7% and are losing possession of the ball 144.7 times on average per game, both of which are shocking statistics and need improvement.

Everton’s Spanish manager could make a great signing in Garner, especially when you look at his defensive midfield attributes, he could become a great asset for the club, and at just 20 years old, has the potential to grow into a fantastic player with the right guidance.

Honours even as wickets tumble at Bristol

ECB pitch inspector Jack Birkenshaw was again an interested spectator at Bristol as 20 wickets fell on another action-packed opening day of the County Championship Division Two match

ScorecardRobin Martin-Jenkins was one of the many seam bowlers who enjoyed themselves at Bristol•Getty ImagesECB pitch inspector Jack Birkenshaw was again an interested spectator at Bristol as 20 wickets fell on another action-packed opening day of the County Championship Division Two match.James Franklin claimed 4 for 27 as Gloucestershire bowled out Sussex for 152 then Rana Naved and Corey Collymore took three wickets each to reduce the home side to 128 all out in reply.Birkenshaw decided against recommending a points deduction for Gloucestershire after their opening game of the season at the same venue had seen 23 wickets fall on the same day. This time he observed that there was less grass on the pitch and again attributed the carnage more to swing, good bowling and poor shot selection than any problem with the surface. “It looks fine to me” he said, and he will not be returning on Thursday.Pointedly, Sussex opted to bat after winning the toss and seemed to be cruising at 61 without loss when Michael Thornely was caught behind off Gemaal Hussain for 25. Barely a ball had gone past the bat up to that point but it was 76 for 2 when Chris Nash, the day’s top scorer with 47, fell lbw to Steve Kirby and 100 for three when Joe Gatting (14) edged Alex Gidman to wicketkeeper Jonathan Batty.Franklin took his first wicket by pinning Matt Prior lbw for two and at lunch the visitors were 107 for 4. Hussain then removed Andrew Hodd for a single before Franklin hit a purple patch, dismissing Robin Martin-Jenkins (two), Murray Goodwin (24) and Naved (10) in the space of 15 balls at a cost of just six runs. The New Zealand all-rounder got the ball to swing and nip off the seam. But soon it was his team-mates facing an all too familiar batting collapse as openers Batty and Abdul-Kadeer Ali both fell to Collymore before tea, which was taken at 34 for 2.Birkenshaw made another close inspection of the pitch during that interval, but still pronounced himself satisfied before watching another sorry procession of home batsmen. Steve Snell was bowled playing over a ball from Martin Jenkins, who then trapped Gidman lbw aiming across the line.Joe Anyon had Hamish Marshall and Chris Taylor dropped as Gloucestershire were put to the sword. Marshall eventually departed lbw to a ball from Anyon which nipped back and at 75 for 5 the home side were in deep trouble.Chris Dent had been held back because of a stomach illness and he soon became the day’s ninth lbw victim with Naved the successful bowler. He followed up by having Franklin taken in the slips for two.Taylor battled away for 37 and Jon Lewis and Hussain did their best at the end but Gloucestershire were bowled out 24 runs behind.
