Journalist drops LUFC takeover update

After it was recently reported by The Athletic that the San Francisco 49ers have a deal in place to buy Leeds United for more than £400m with an option for 100% control of the Yorkshire club to pass to 49ers Enterprises by January 2024, which includes ownership of Elland Road, it seems as though fresh details have emerged on the matter.

What’s the news?

Leeds journalist Adam Pope recently shared a post on his Twitter page with some fresh details on the proposed takeover deal.

He said: “I understand that due to a multiple of revenues the overall price to take over Leeds could rise to £500m or more depending on factors such as future spending and league status.”

Pope also said that Andrea Radrizzani’s company Aser have the option to void the deal if they wish and that the current message seems to be 49ers and Leeds are “still working closely.”

Radz buzzing

Radrizzani completed his takeover of Leeds back in May 2017, ending Massimo Cellino’s three-year spell as the club’s owner after buying a 50% stake in January of the same year.

Since then, the Yorkshire club have managed to rise from the bottom half of the Championship at the end of the 2017/18 season to a top-half finish in the Premier League last season under Marcelo Bielsa’s guidance.

With the future in mind, it seems as though the club could be welcoming new owners in the near future to presumably push the club even further than they’ve managed to come under Bielsa and Radrizzani, which would surely delight a lot of Leeds fans.

However, taking into account what Pope had to say in his recent tweet, it seems as though the club’s final league position this season could have some sort of financial impact on what the takeover deal could look like.

Consequently, if Leeds can finish as high up the table as possible, this would lead to more money being put into the club, which would surely be music to Radrizzani’s ears. Not only would he have generated some fantastic results behind the scenes, keeping them in the division, but his pockets will be larger as a result.

Of course, the Italian’s first thoughts should be with the club but he will surely be motivated by the opportunity to gain an even greater source of income from Leeds’ accomplishments this term. The end goal for Radrizzani was always to cement their Premier League status and if he ends his tenure at Elland Road with that achieved, he will be a very happy man indeed.

However, the fact that Leeds are currently sitting in 15th position in the Premier League table with 16 points on the board from their opening 15 games of the season suggests that there is still some work to be done throughout the second half of the season if they want to match or even improve on their ninth-place finish in the league last season.

Hay discusses Bielsa’s LUFC future

Phil Hay has given a short and sweet response to Andrea Radrizzani confirming Leeds United remain fully behind Marcelo Bielsa.

The Lowdown: Leeds struggling

After a fantastic maiden campaign back in the Premier League which saw the Whites finish in the top half, the Yorkshire outfit have struggled to hit the same heights this term.

As it stands, they are 17th in the table after 10 matches and, although the recent 2-1 victory over Norwich gives them a little more breathing space, Leeds remain in a relegation battle for now.

Also, Bielsa’s contract is set to run out at the end of the campaign (Transfermarkt) due to his tendency to only sign one-year deals, and it is not yet sure whether he will put pen to paper on a new one.

The Latest: Hay discusses Bielsa future

Speaking at the Lisbon Web Summit, Leeds owner Radrizzani discussed Bielsa’s future. He said (via The Athletic):

“When I got Marcelo Bielsa to come I knew it was going to be a challenge but we support him unconditionally and I think that the results have been seen on the pitch.

“For him, this is the longest (reign) in his career at a club. As a club, we support him and his ideas unconditionally.”

Hay was then asked on Twitter whether he believed these comments could be seen as the dreaded vote of confidence. His response was emphatic:

“Nah.”

The Athletic reporter’s response has gone under the radar with zero retweets and just 13 likes – he has over 210,000 followers on Twitter.

The Verdict: Deserves more time

Even though he hasn’t been at the club that long, Bielsa is a Leeds legend. In the 14 years between the club’s relegation to the second tier and Bielsa’s appointment, 18 different managers tried and failed to return the Elland Road side to the promised land (Soccerbase.com).

It took the 66-year-old two seasons to earn promotion, and the way they took to life back amongst the elite, scoring 62 goals in the league alone (Sky Sports), showed his nous.

Some of European football’s leading managers, such as Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino (via Give Me Sport), have even named Bielsa as an inspiration.

The fans love him, and that adulation appears to be reciprocated – the former Chile boss has never spent longer as a club’s manager than he has in his current role. Yes, it is a bit of a struggle at the moment, but the man in the hot-seat has earned the right to turn things around.

Everton fans shocked by Rafa Benitez claim

Lots of Everton fans have been left shocked over a claim which emerged from Rafael Benitez.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match at Brentford on Sunday afternoon, the Spaniard stated (via Phil Kirkbride): “We are doing much better with injuries now, compared to the past. Delph is available and training everyday. Gbamin was injured for two years, but is now available and training everyday.”

The claim on doing better with injuries is a little strange, given that the Toffees have as many as six players from the first team squad currently out injured at the moment, with three of those having an unknown return date (evertonfc.com).

Also, both Delph and Gbamin have a long history of injury problems since signing for the Merseyside club, so they could fall down injured again at any moment, despite being back in training.

Therefore, it is no surprise to see so many Evertonians left confused by the manager’s comments.

Celtic: Vasilis Barkas set for exit

Celtic goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas will leave Parkhead in the January window, according to journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos.

The Lowdown: Barkas’ Hoops career

It’s safe to say that Barkas hasn’t lived up to expectations in Scotland after joining from AEK Athens for £4.5m in 2020.

The 27-year-old was in and out of the side last season under Neil Lennon, making just 13 Premiership appearances. He hasn’t managed to turn things around this season under Ange Postecoglou, with his only appearance coming against FC Midtjylland.

He hasn’t featured following his blunder at Celtic Park in the Champions League qualifier, and it now seems as if he will leave over the coming months.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-15/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Chorianopoulos’ post

Chorianopoulos, a Greek reporter, had his say on the shot-stopper on Wednesday night, revealing that a loan or a permanent exit are both options at this moment in time.

He tweeted: “Vasilis Barkas is about to leave from Celtic on January. On loan or permanent.”

The Verdict: The correct decision…

Celtic brought in Joe Hart over the summer and also have Scott Bain and Conor Hazard sitting around, so shipping out one of the three who aren’t playing is a shrewd call.

Barkas is on £9,000-a-week in Scotland, while Bain and Hazard are on £10,000-a-week combined, so it makes sense to move on the big earner.

Things haven’t worked out in Scotland for the Greek goalie, and the Hoops may face a battle to recoup the £4.5m they paid for his services, especially with his Transfermarkt valuation plummeting since moving to Lennoxtown.

South Africa offers amnesty to ICL players

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has unveiled an amnesty offer for South African players associated with the ICL, and offered them a chance to return to official cricket if they terminate their contracts with the league by May 31. Those who joined the unofficial league include Justin Kemp, Nicky Boje, Dale Benkenstein, Andrew Hall and Johan van der Wath.CSA’s decision, taken during a board meeting on Friday, is in line with similar offers announced by various national boards following a recent ICC guideline on the issue. It specified a six-month cooling period from their last ICL match in November 2008, so the players would be eligible for the new South African season come September. The move by various national boards to offer amnesty to the ICL players was prompted by the BCCI’s offer to ICL’s Indian players that was made on April 29.

Queensland offer Symonds chance for recovery

Queensland Cricket will stand by ‘family’ member after his latest ban from the Australia team

Cricinfo staff06-Jun-2009Queensland Cricket will stand by Andrew Symonds after his latest ban from the Australia team and will pick him in the state squad if he wants to play. Symonds was sent home from the World Twenty20 after breaking team and personal rules and said on landing back home on Saturday that he had “a fair bit to consider”.Symonds has had his 2009-10 Cricket Australia contract withdrawn and will weigh up whether to continue in all forms of the game or focus on the lucrative Twenty20 leagues. Graham Dixon, the Queensland Cricket chief executive, would like Symonds back in the Bulls set-up.”Certainly,” he said in the Sunday Mail. “Andrew has been representing us since he was 17, so half of his life he’s been part of the Queensland cricket family.”We like the bloke and we want to help him through this issue that’s facing him now. I would expect that Andrew would be on any selection list. As far as Queensland is concerned, we aren’t on the field until October so there’s no pressing needs.”Dixon said Queensland Cricket’s No. 1 priority was “Andrew Symonds the bloke”. “Andrew has to weigh up what sort of cricket he wants to play and he probably did that on the plane,” he said.Peter Young, the Cricket Australia spokesman, said Symonds’ contract for 2009-10 would not go ahead. “Andrew has a lot on his mind,” he said. “For the time being, the ball is in his court in terms of what he wants to do next. We are keen to encourage the private work that he’s been doing with his own rehabilitation program and we’ll support him through that.”Jimmy Maher, Symonds’ former team-mate, said a change in team culture and personnel contributed to the allrounder’s problems. “Let’s face it, all these incidents have only started occurring since the recent spate of retirements of the elder statesmen of the Australian cricket team,” he said. “He’d had one incident in 10 years before then [in Cardiff in 2005].”It’s no surprise that he played so well in the IPL this year under the stewardship of Darren Lehmann and Adam Gilchrist. They are guys who work on the adage that you train hard and play hard and enjoy yourself. ‘Boof’ Lehmann has handled him exceptionally well. I dare say if guys like Hayden and Langer and Gilchrist were on this trip, the latest incident wouldn’t have happened.”Maher said Symonds wanted to catch up with the boys at the end of a day’s play, “like we used to”. “Now when he mentions having a beer some of the new generation look at him like he’s from another planet,” he said. “They want to run off to their rooms to have recovery and play XBox.”

Arsenal fans slam Ben White vs Burnley

Many Arsenal fans have been slamming the display of Ben White in the first half of their game at Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The former Brighton defender struggled at times in the air against the Clarets’ two strikers Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes, a criticism of his in the 2-0 loss away at Brentford on the opening day.

He was also guilty of giving the ball away on a few occasions, which ended up giving cheap chances to Sean Dyche’s team, especially before Martin Odegaard settled nerves down with a sublime free-kick to put the Gunners 1-0 up.

Nonetheless, with a £50m price ag on his shoulders, White will want to show the Arsenal faithful in the second half why they paid so much money for him.

Celtic: Ajeti lets them down vs Dundee Utd

When Kyogo Furuhashi was ruled out of action for a period of seven matches following the international break, you knew Celtic would be in trouble.

However, after Albian Ajeti found the net three times in the following two games, it looked as though they’d found their solution.

The Swiss was taking his chances and was finding himself in the right place at the right time.

Sadly, the £4.5m striker has now reverted to type in the last few weeks with some disappointing performances.

All of that has culminated in Celtic’s worst start to a season for 23 years. They lost to Livingston last week and seven days later, they were drawing at Parkhead against Dundee United 1-1.

Their away form under Ange Postecoglou has been disastrous. They are yet to win a game on the road in the league under his stewardship so their home displays were a saving grace.

Yet, after picking up a solitary point on Sunday, there was little to be positive about.

Ajeti was one of the worst in what was a dismal showing from the former West Ham attacker once again.

He spurned some simple opportunities to score versus Livi and the same eventuality occurred when they took on Dundee United. He’d find himself in valuable positions but was unable to find the net.

A glorious opportunity fell his way in the opening period but he somehow missed the target from just four yards out. Another chance was missed late in the second half when Ajeti headed wide from six yards.

The 24-year-old was isolated once again and offered little apart from appearing in the penalty area. It was a showing in stark contrast to Kyogo, someone who is willing to press and run in behind.

During the course of the match, Ajeti had just 17 touches of the ball, 28 fewer than goalkeeper Joe Hart, but he didn’t do a lot with possession once he had it.

In fact, he completed only 75% of his passes, making six in total during his 90 minutes on the field.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-celtic-news-duffy-mccarthy-brady-knockaert” title= “Read the latest Celtic news!”]

That’s a number you’d traditionally expect from a centre-forward who’s been substituted at half time so to see it from someone who lasted a full game is dismal.

If things weren’t bad enough, his frustration shone through with a total of three fouls.

This was a horror show from Ajeti, a player who is likely to be immediately axed from the team once Kyogo and Giorgos Giakoumakis are back fit.
