James Tredwell drafted into Test squad

James Tredwell, the uncapped Kent offspinner, has been added to England’s Test squad as cover for Graeme Swann

Cricinfo staff14-Dec-2009James Tredwell, the uncapped Kent offspinner, has been added to England’s Test squad as cover for Graeme Swann, who has not fully recovered from the side injury that troubled him earlier in the tour, although the management are confident Swann will be able to take his place in the opening match at Centurion.Swann missed the second Twenty20 international and was ruled out of the first two 50-over contests between the sides last month with the injury, but was replaced in the starting XI by Adil Rashid, the legspinner, on those occasions. However, Tredwell then joined the one-day squad for the remainder of the series.Swann played in both the two-day matches against a South African Invitational XI at East London, collecting 6 for 55 in the first game and 1 for 65 in the second from a total of 27 overs.”Graeme’s injury is improving and we expect him to be available for the first Test starting on Wednesday,” Andy Flower, the England coach, said. “But with a further three matches to come after Centurion we have decided that we need a ‘like for like’ replacement on hand for Graeme should this be required later in the tour.”When not with the senior squad, Tredwell has been based with the Performance Programme in Pretoria and he scored 70 in last week’s match against a Titans President’s XI. He was part of the England training session which took place at the University of Pretoria’s high performance centre (HPC) on Monday.England have been troubled by a number of injuries during the tour and doubts still linger over the fitness of pacemen James Anderson, who has a problem with his right knee, although Ryan Sidebottom is fully recovered from his side strain.Anderson looked in decent shape during a centre-wicket practice session at the HPC and removed Jonathan Trott when Chris Jordon, the Surrey paceman who is part of the Performance Squad, held a good catch at third slip.

VAR discussion released by PGMOLReveals check of controversial goalNewcastle won 1-0 against ArsenalWHAT HAPPENED?

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has released the full conversation that took place to review Anthony Gordon's winning goal in the November 4 match. The strike proved controversial as there was a suspicion that the ball had gone out of play before it was sent into the box, while there were also claims of a foul and an offside.

AdvertisementWATCH THE CLIPWHAT VAR SAID

The released audio reveals the conversation that took place between the referee, VAR and assistant VAR as they reviewed the replay.

VAR Andy Madley said that he could find "no conclusive evidence" that the ball had crossed the line before Joe Willock's cross. He then reviewed the possible foul on Gabriel Magalhaes, saying: "I don’t see a specific foul on Gabriel. I see two hands on his back but I don’t see anything of a push that warrants him flying forward like that."

Regarding the possible offside, AVAR Stuart Burt concluded: "I don’t know where the ball is because the ball is being hidden from Joelinton here. So you don’t know where the ball is. And you’ve got no conclusive evidence of Gordon being ahead of the ball. So with the reverse angle that you’ve got, you have not got any opportunity there of where the ball is. With that in my opinion I think you have to award the goal on the evidence."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The decision to let the goal stand sparked an angry reaction from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta in his post-match press conference. He said: "Embarrassing what happened – how this goal stands, in the Premier League – this league we say is the best in the world. I've been 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It's a disgrace and there's too much at stake here."

However, a Premier League panel ruled that the decision to let the goal stand was the correct one.

Revealed: Man Utd bidder Sheikh Jassim is 'quiet and guarded', smokes during meetings and wants Red Devils as a 'trophy asset' as he closes in on £5.5bn takeover

The Qatari banker has been described as a discreet operator and had flown under the radar in the Middle East until he launched his bid to buy United

Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani, the frontrunner to buy Manchester United, has been described as a private and reserved individual who is little known in business circles in Qatar and the Middle East, according to a report in .

The Sheikh, the son of the former Qatari Prime Minister, is also likely to be receiving backing from the state for his £5.5 billion takeover bid for the Red Devils as he only earned approximately £1.5 million from his role as board member of Credit Suisse, which he served on for six years and appears to be one of his most prominent roles.

GettyGraduated from military school aged 16

According to the report by , Sheikh Jassim entered the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1997 at the age of 15 and graduated the following year at the age of 16.

That would make him one of the youngest students at Sandhurst, where officers usually enter at the age of 18 or at post-graduate level at the age of 21 or above.

He studied Commissioning Course 973 and was part of Inkerman Company, along with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who is the current emir of Qatar.

Previous Sandhurst graduates include Winston Churchill, Prince William and Prince Harry and Muammar Gaddafi.

The report also reveals that Sheikh Jassim was part of discussions to buy United back in 2010 when the Red Knights, a consortium of wealthy Red Devils' fans, launched an ultimately failed bid to buy the club from the Glazers.

Jassim attended meetings in Doha alongside other members of the Qatar royal family and according to a source consulted by he seemed "very interested in the idea".

GettySmoking and looking 'uninterested' in meetings

The report states that Jassim was known for smoking in the middle of meetings with his various companies. While alcohol is prohibited in Qatar apart from in certain hotels, there is no law against smoking.

Jassim's business associates consulted by also said he was "difficult to read" in meetings and sometimes appeared uninterested.

"It was not uncommon to see him cross his legs, look away from the table and, once again, start puffing on a cigar," adds the report.

Getty'Likes nice things'

Although Jassim is said to be a private and reserved figure and in that respect is very different to INEOS CEO Sir Jim Ratcliffe, his only rival to buy United, the report adds that the Skeikh "likes to have nice things" and therefore wants to own the club because it will give him a greater status and presence.

Qataris have invested in prestigious British department store Harrods plus skyscrapers the Shard and the Empire State Building and United, the best-supported and most successful club in English football, is seen as another "trophy asset".

Peter Moores has turned down the chance of becoming Pakistan coach

Peter Moores has turned down the chance of becoming Pakistan coach. Moores, the former England coach, was approached by the PCB but, after discussions, decided not to pursue the opportunity before a formal offer was made. While tempted by the chance to return to international coaching, Moores was reluctant to commit to long periods away from his family. “I was hugely flattered to be approached,” Moores told ESPNcricinfo. “And I was very tempted by such a prestigious role with an exciting team.”But having thought about it deeply, I don’t think it is the right time for me or my family. I have committed myself to a consultancy role with Nottinghamshire and I am enjoying spending time with my kids as they grow up.”Moores was sacked from his role as England coach for the second time almost exactly 12 months ago. While his reputation took a battering in the media following England’s poor World Cup campaign in 2015, it is clear that he is still highly thought of within the game. Both Alastair Cook and Joe Root publically credited Moores for his influence in the aftermath of England’s Ashes win last year and Nottinghamshire’s form improved dramatically after he joined in a consultancy role last year. After failing to win any of their first five Championship matches – and only one of their first eight – Notts were bottom of Division One at the start of July. But after Moores joined, they won 14 and drew two of their remaining 20 matches across all competitions including five out of six in the Championship. He previously coached both Sussex and Lancashire to the County Championship title, forming an especially productive partnership with Mushtaq Ahmed, currently head of Pakistan’s National Cricket Academy, during the spell at Sussex. Moores’ son, Tom, is a 19-year-old wicketkeeper batsman who represented England in the U-19 World Cup and recently joined the staff at Nottinghamshire.Waqar Younis stepped down at Pakistan coach almost a month ago after two years in the role. His scathing report into poor discipline within the squad – and his less than flattering views on the leadership skills of Shahid Afridi – were subsequently leaked to the media, while he cited conflicts at board level as another issue inhibiting the team’s progress. The coaching role is understood to be based in Lahore, though Pakistan are likely to continue to play their home games in the UAE for the foreseeable future.

Vitori suspended for illegal bowling action

Brian Vitori, the Zimbabwe left-arm seamer, has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect after an independent assessment found his bowling action to be illegal.Vitori, who was reported for a suspect action during the T20 series against Bangladesh in January, underwent assessment in Chennai, where all variations of his deliveries exceeded the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under ICC’s regulations. He was left out of Zimbabwe’s World T20 squad earlier this month. In accordance with the laws surrounding bowlers who have failed to clear the ICC’s independent assessment, Vitori’s international suspension will also be recognised and enforced by all National Cricket Federations for domestic cricket events played in their own jurisdiction. However, with the consent of the board, Vitori may be allowed to play in domestic cricket events played in Zimbabwe.Vitori, 25, can apply for a re-assessment at any stage after modifying his bowling action.Vitori has played four Tests, 19 ODIs and 11 T20s for Zimbabwe after making his international debut in August 2011.

O confronto

Henriques wants Abbott's name 'expelled' from tragedy

Sean Abbott is set to return to Sheffield Shield cricket on Tuesday as his captain Moises Henriques called for his name to be “expelled” from the tragedy of Phillip Hughes’ death

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Dec-2014Sean Abbott is set to return to Sheffield Shield cricket on Tuesday as his captain Moises Henriques called for his name to be “expelled” from the tragedy of Phillip Hughes’ death. Abbott has been named in a 12-man squad to play for New South Wales in their Shield game against Queensland at the SCG.The next round of Shield games was to start last Friday but due to Wednesday’s funeral for Hughes it was postponed to begin on Tuesday, coinciding with the start of the first Test between Australia and India in Adelaide. The return to the SCG will be an emotional one for the New South Wales side, as that was the venue at which Hughes was struck down by a bouncer nearly a fortnight ago.Abbott, the bowler who sent down that delivery, did not play grade cricket in Sydney at the weekend but Henriques said he was coping well under the circumstances. Henriques said Abbott should be treated like any other player who had lost a friend and been affected by the tragedy.”He’s coping pretty well,” Henriques told the radio programme. “I guess from our point of view as fellow players, we’re trying to expel his name from the tragedy a little bit, because in my opinion I don’t think he’s any more at fault than any other fast bowler who’s bowled a bouncer in his career.”We’re actually trying to remove his name from everything that’s happened, and just treat him as another one of the players. I think that’s how he wants to be treated – another one of the guys who went through the same thing, has lost a friend and lost someone close to them.”It frustrates me when he gets named a lot because it escalates guilt a little bit, as if he should be feeling guilt. I certainly don’t think he should be feeling guilt at all, and I guess that’s why we’d prefer just to call it ‘the bowler’, rather than ‘Sean’.”In a statement, Cricket New South Wales said that players had been given the option of withdrawing from this week’s match should they feel not ready to play. However, aside from those who have now joined the Test squad, all of the New South Wales players who took part in Hughes’ final match have been named in the 12-man squad. Henriques will captain the Blues in his first outing for the state since he injured his calf against Victoria in a one-day game on October 17.Meanwhile, South Australia also chosen a 13-man group to travel to Hobart to take on Tasmania, with Kane Richardson, Daniel Worrall and Adam Zampa having all ruled themselves out as they continue to deal with the loss of Hughes. Kelvin Smith, Cameron Valente, Sam Raphael, Kelvin Smith and Gary Putland have been included.Tom Cooper, who was batting with Hughes when he was struck at the SCG, said he would play in Hobart but had found it difficult to get over the image of Hughes being struck. “I keep replaying it,” Cooper said. “A few of the New South boys have said that as well, they keep replaying it over and over in their minds. That is one of the toughest bits.”Cooper was also Hughes’ house-mate in Adelaide and said that because Hughes was so often touring with the Australia side, his absence at home had not yet sunk in. “It’s a little bit weird because he has always been on tour, it is not un-normal for him to not be around,” Cooper said. “It hasn’t really hit home yet. I’m guessing it’s going to come and go in waves because we’re so used to him being away.”Tasmania have made one notable change for the match against South Australia, with former Test wicketkeeper Tim Paine dropped and Ben Dunk included as gloveman. Paine has had a disappointing start to the Shield campaign with only 88 runs from his six innings, while Dunk’s limited-overs start to the summer earned him a call-up to Australia’s T20 side and last week he showed his red-ball form with 215 in the Futures League.Queensland have added uncapped offspinner Cameron Brimblecombe to their squad for the match against New South Wales, while fast bowler Cameron Gannon is also in the 13-man group as a replacement for Ryan Harris, who is in the Test side. Victoria will play Western Australia in Perth and have added Marcus Stoinis, who has recovered from an ankle injury, and David Hussey to their squad, with Chris Rogers out due to Test duties.New South Wales squad Moises Henriques (capt), Sean Abbott, Doug Bollinger, Ryan Carters, Scott Henry, Nick Larkin, Nic Maddinson, Peter Nevill, Steve O’Keefe, Gurinder Sandhu, Will Somerville, Mitchell Starc.South Australia squad Johan Botha (capt), Tom Cooper, Mark Cosgrove, Callum Ferguson, Travis Head, Trent Lawford, Tim Ludeman, Joe Mennie, Gary Putland, Sam Raphael, Chadd Sayers, Kelvin Smith, Cameron Valente.Tasmania squad George Bailey (capt), Alex Doolan, Jackson Bird, Ed Cowan, Xavier Doherty, Ben Dunk, James Faulkner, Andrew Fekete, Ben Hilfenhaus, Sam Rainbird, Jordan Silk, Jon Wells.Queensland squad James Hopes (capt), Cameron Boyce, Cameron Brimblecombe, Joe Burns, Ben Cutting, Luke Feldman, Peter Forrest, Cameron Gannon, Peter George, Chris Hartley, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Reardon.Victoria squad Matthew Wade (capt), Fawad Ahmed, Scott Boland, Daniel Christian, Aaron Finch, Peter Handscomb, John Hastings, David Hussey, Glenn Maxwell, Rob Quiney, Marcus Stoinis, Chris Tremain, Cameron White.
