Aquilani close to Liverpool exit

Alberto Aquilani could finally be heading for the Anfield exit door after AC Milan confirmed their interest in the midfielder, the Daily Mail reports.

The Italian has suffered a dreadful time at Liverpool ever since joining the club for £20 million from Roma in 2009.

After spent his first few months in the treatment room he made a few sporadic appearances toward the end of the 2009/10 season before spending the last campaign on loan at Juventus.

His performances in Turin seem to have impressed officials at the San Siro with owner Silvio Berlusconi confessing his admiration for the player.

“Aquilani is a great player.”said:  Berlusconi

‘We are discussing the possibility with (AC Milan administrator Adriano) Galliani.

“I spoke to (AC Milan coach Massimiliano) Allegri and we will see what happens.”

Milan are desperate to strengthen their midfield and have targeted the 27-year-old after missing out on Fiorentina’s Ricardo Montolivo.

Anfield boss Kenny Dalglish is keen to move the Italian on to balance the books after an expensive summer on Mersey side.

It’s expected that the club will make a huge loss on Aquilani but Dalglish needs to start bringing money into the club after shelling out over a £100 million since his return at the start of the year.

Hernandez v Welbeck v Berbatov – who should get the nod?

The depth of Manchester United’s squad and the champions’ tremendous start to the season has presented Sir Alex Ferguson with something of a selection headache. One of the most impressive elements to this new-look United side has been their ability up front and whilst England striker Wayne Rooney almost picks himself for a starting berth, who is the best strike partner for him?

Ferguson has four impressive Premier League strikers to choose from at United, with Danny Welbeck, Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov competing to partner Rooney in attack. Ferguson’s shift to youth in refreshing his team has given the edge to Welbeck and Hernandez over the more experienced Berbatov but the key for Fergie may be rotation.

Injuries have meant that so far Fergie’s job has been made easier. Hernandez suffered a concussion on United’s pre-season tour of the US, ruling him out of starting a game till last weekend’s win at Bolton (where he scored twice on his return). In Hernandez’s absence, young England striker Welbeck stepped up and impressed for United (scoring twice in the league) before he too suffered an injury late last month.

So far this season Ferguson has given the nod to either Welbeck or Hernandez, both impressing in United’s fluid and free-flowing style of attacking football. Welbeck, 20, enjoyed a successful loan spell with Sunderland last season and has returned to United ready to make a real impact in the first team. Out of the two Welbeck does look the more complete player, able to drop deep and hold up the ball as well as having the pace and technique to scare defences. Welbeck’s progress at United is also great news for England fans as Fabio Capello continues to search for a long-term strike partner for Rooney in an England shirt.

But whilst he only returned for his first start against Bolton at the weekend, you can’t discount the revelation of last season Hernandez. The Mexican striker, 23, scored 20 goals in all competitions in his debut season, surpassing anyone’s expectations for a striker that arrived from his hometown club Chivas de Guadalajara only a year ago. Hernandez’s predatory instincts in front of goal and movement around the box terrorised defences whilst his work rate and friendly nature made him an instant hit with the fans. With United’s free-flowing counter attack football based on pace and movement, Chicharito seems like the perfect foil for Rooney in attack and the ideal striker to get on the end of a pinpoint cross or perfectly timed through ball.

[ad_pod id=’vip-2′ align=’centre’]

Whilst Ferguson has been rotating between Hernandez and Welbeck, the recurring theme has been Berbatov remaining on the subs bench. This seems like an amazing situation for last season’s Premier League joint top scorer but as Ferguson’s young team develops, Berbatov has been restricted to only one substitute appearance in the league this season. Arguably the Bulgarian striker is the most technically gifted of all United’s attackers but as United’s play develops around pace and lightening movement, Berbatov has seemingly been left behind. The 30-year-old has often been criticised for looking pedestrian and lazy in his style of play but you can’t under-estimate the effect the former Tottenham and Bayer Leverkusen striker can have on a game.

But with four exciting strikers in the squad, at least one is likely to miss out. Rotation amongst United’s busy schedule both domestically and in Europe will mean that all four will get some games, but unfortunately the opening four games of this season seem to indicate that Berbatov, a player who only signed three years ago for over £30 million, will be the one to spend more time on the bench. Whilst he would still provide an excellent substitute option along with the young but slightly inexperienced Welbeck, the movement, pace and goals of Hernandez should get the nod as United’s new look side try to retain their title.

Barca ace claims Manchester City interest

Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has claimed that Manchester City are interested in making a move for him, as he is out of contract in the summer.

The France international defender has yet to renew his current deal with the European champions, and has left the door open for a move away from the Catalan giants.

The big spending Premier League club are not the only interested party according to the left-back, who has eyed two more years at the top level.

“There are some clubs interested, like Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Manchester City,” the 32-year-old told RMC Sport.

“At the moment there are no concrete offers. I can’t say any more. I have so much respect for Barca but if I don’t reach an agreement, the door is open.

“I believe I have the legs to go on for two more years. I have an international objective. We have qualified for Euro 2012, which is good, but I am also looking at the 2014 World Cup,” he concluded.

Abidal recovered from a liver tumour last year to feature in the tail-end of Barcelona’s victorious Champions League and La Liga campaigns, but is no longer guaranteed an automatic starting berth in Pep Guardiola’s team.

A move by City would seem unlikely however, as they currently have both Gael Clichy and Aleksandar Kolarov in Abidal’s position.

Top TEN football celebrations of recent times – VIDEO

Ever been playing in the local park when you fire in an outrageous goal from miles out, only to ruin it with one of those ludicrously embarrassing celebrations? Well don’t worry; the top players do it too. Iconic celebrations are all part of the game, from Shearer’s salute to Crouchy’s robot and a well worked out routine after scoring a goal is always necessary. Otherwise you end up as boring as Michael Owen…Anyway here are 10 of the best:

1. Craig Bellamy – A man whose career has never been short on controversy, indeed Bellamy himself acknowledged this after an incident during his unsuccessful stint at Liverpool back in 2007. During a training camp in Portugal, Craig allegedly brandished a golf club at team-mate John Arne Riise after a disagreement, an action that earned him the nickname ‘the Nutter with the Putter.’ Both players seemed to put it behind them though, whilst Bellamy showed his sense of humour by celebrating his equalizer in a Champions League match against Barcelona with a well-aimed golf swing.

[youtube eFiq3YSfbi0]

2. Stuart Pearce – England are often accused of a lack of pride and passion when pulling on the Three Lions shirt, but here is a man who cannot be doubted on that front. The current England Assistant, u21 Coach and incumbent Great Britain manager’s name is embedded on one of those famous English lists, those to miss a penalty in a major tournament. The whole world felt for Stuart as he missed in the shootout against Germany back in the World Cup Semi Final of 1990. So when England and Spain were locked together in penalties at the Euro 96 tournament , not many expected Pearcey to step up to the plate. But step up he did, rifling his penalty into the bottom right corner, prompting an iconic image in English football. Displaying a face more contorted than the Elephant Man’s, his fist pump signalled a triumphant end to his and England’s penalty woes. Until the next round against the Germans.

3. Robbie Fowler – Liverpool/Everton derbies are always dramatic affairs, so when Robbie popped up with a goal in 1999, he thought he’d take a light-hearted approach to the whole affair. Except his actions didn’t go down too well. Responding to false allegations from Everton fans over drug abuse, Fowler decided to crouch down and snort the white line of the penalty area, insinuating cocaine use. Needless to say, the powers-that-be were not impressed, handing him a 4 match ban and a £60,000 fine. At least manager Gerard Houllier saw the funny side; suggesting it was a Cameroonian grass-eating celebration picked up from team-mate Rigobert Song.

[youtube TOBja7ZjGws]

4.  Paul Gascoigne – Ah Gazza. England’s number one prankster. Of course he had to feature in a list of humorous celebrations. Back to Euro 96 again and Gazza scored England’s most memorable goal in a glorious Wembley win over Scotland. What followed after was one of the most memorable celebrations. After tabloid headlines over a drinking session that involved players strapped to a ‘dentist’s chair’ while vodka was poured down their throats, Gazza then rammed such criticisms back down the journos own throats. Lying down on the pitch, he opened wide as teammates squirted their water bottles into his mouth.

5. Roger Milla – The Cameroon striker has an incredible story, given he made his professional debut in 1974! However he came to prominence as a 38-year-old in the 1990 World Cup, scoring 4 goals in the process as Cameroon became the first African side to reach the Quarter Final. However, his celebration of these goals ensured legendary status and led to a Coca Cola commercial in 2010. Dancing round the corner flag now became known as the ‘Milla Wiggle’ and incredibly he returned four years later to become the World Cup’s oldest goal scorer. Strictly Come Dancing should take notes.

6.  Temuri Ketsbaia – The feisty Georgian joined Newcastle United in 1997 and became a popular figure with fans despite his less-than-impressive goal scoring record of 8 goals in 78 games. Maybe he was forgiven on account of what he did when he did score a goal! After one strike against Bolton, Temuri whipped off his shirt and went all Eric Cantona on the advertising hoardings. Attacking specifically the McDonald’s and Adidas boards, perhaps he just doesn’t agree with multi-national corporations, after all, Georgia used to be Communist controlled. Or maybe he’s just mental.

7.  Julius Aghahowa – The Premiership has seen many flippers, from Lua Lua’s spiralling efforts to Robbie Keane’s pathetic gun slinging, but the best of the lot had to be the Nigerian Aghahowa. Unfortunately during his spell at Wigan between 2007/08, he failed to score once, but previous gymnastics for Shakhtar Donetsk caught the world’s eye. Indeed, there are rumours he can flip further than a Rory Delap throw in. It’s just a pity he didn’t teach this skill to striking partner at the time, Emile Heskey.

8.  Bernardo Corradi – The Italian striker spent an extremely forgettable two years at Manchester City, back in the days when Arab money couldn’t buy you a team. His only notable offering was a bizarre celebration involving more corner flag antics with Joey Barton following a goal against Fulham. Whilst Barton knelt down, Corradi proceeded to knight him with the flag. Arise Sir Joey.

9.  Stjarnan FC – A team in the Icelandic Premiership who specialize in team celebrations, with routines including ‘the fishing rod,’ ‘the Rambo shooting spree’ and a ‘human bicycle.’ If they spent the time used on practicing such displays on their game play, then Barcelona should watch out. Still, I’m sure some of the X-Factor dancers could learn something from such superb choreography.

[youtube NHpAYlas7lA]

10.  Cristiano Lucarelli – Back in 2007, Lucarelli, a striker from Livorno whipped off his shirt in traditional celebratory fashion after scoring a goal. What happened next certainly wasn’t traditional. Dropping his shirt on the floor, he proceeded to climb on top of it and perform a simulated sex act. One can only assume him and his girlfriend were having problems in the bedroom at the time. Otherwise he has some interesting sexual habits.

Frank Lampard v Lucas – will Frank be unstoppable?

One of Liverpool’s most improved players this season has been Lucas Leiva. The defensive midfielder has been the focus of much of the Liverpool fans’ frustration in recent seasons, but his revival under Kenny Dalglish has been impressive. When the Premier League returns from the international break, Lucas will once again take up his position in front of the Liverpool back-four to fend off the advances of Frank Lampard.

Lampard so far this season has continued to prove why he is one of England’s elite players. Scoring six goals so far this season and starting every game, he has been impressive in his inclusion as one of the bright spots in Andre Villas-Boas’ Chelsea side. A player certainly in the twilight of his career has helped his side sustain a decent challenge on the Premier League title behind Manchester City and Manchester United.

Going into this important tie against rivals Liverpool, Lampard will certainly be one of the focal points of Chelsea’s attack and hopes of earning all 3pts.

Can Lucas continue his impressive form and stop one of the Premier League’s in-form players, or will Chelsea continue their resurgence following the disappointing defeat to London-rivals Arsenal a few weeks ago?

Ancelotti slams Chelsea team

Carlo Ancelotti has stated that the ageing players at Chelsea are responsible for the club’s dip in form, and not manager Andre Villas Boas.

The Portuguese coach is under immense pressure to turn the outfit’s fortunes around, after losses to Arsenal, QPR and Liverpool in the league have them ten points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

Meanwhile in Europe, a draw against Genk and defeat to Bayer Leverkusen means that qualification to the Champions League knockout stages is not guaranteed.

Despite this, the former Blues boss feels it is the ‘old’ players who are to blame, not the manager.

“Villas-Boas cannot work miracles. This is an old team now,” the Italian told Mirror Football.

“It is exactly the same team as the one I left, with the exception of Juan Mata and Raul Meireles.

“The problem is not Villas-Boas, it is with the team that he has. Andre is young and inexperienced, but he has done well and he is talented.

“I feel Roman (Abramovich) needs to give him time to sort it out and make his ideas work.

“The problem is in the organisation and with the players – all the things that they have to change to make it better.

“Maybe he does lack experience. But they knew that when they appointed him. He needs time,” Ancelotti concluded.

Simply The TEN ‘Worst Aspects’ of football

There are so many wonderful aspects to the beautiful game, which we are entertained by week in week out. Whether its a glorious goal, a wonderful passing move, or an exceptional last minute challenge, we are extremely lucky to be able to witness such enjoyable feats every week in the game. However modern day football isn’t perfect and there is also a darker side which pervades across the sport and continually threatens to ruin our enjoyment of the game.

The game has come a long way in the last few decades and whilst it still provides a great spectacle, a lot of the changes that have come into the game have negatively affected the sport. The sport is now filled with frustrating rules and aspects that threaten to ruin our enjoyment of the game. Petty rules can end up spoiling the game as we just want to see the fairest match possible. A lack of certain rules can also threaten our enjoyment of the game, as some players take advantage of this, and try in any way they can to gain an advantage for their sides. Poor behaviour by certain players is another negative aspect of modern day football and something which needs to be cracked down upon.

The game now seems overrun with certain aspects that blight matches every single week and if we aren’t careful to get a grip on some of these aspects by either changing the rules, bringing in new rules or dealing out harsher punishments for those bringing the game into disrepute, then these aspects will continue to ruin our enjoyment of the sport.

The ideal signing that both Liverpool and Arsenal should battle for

As the ever crazy January transfer window rolls on, there is one player who should seriously be turning heads in England, yet despite a few tepid links not much has been done. This player is Real Madrid fringe player Esteban Granero, who at 24 years of age just wants to play football and is finally willing to seek a move away from the Bernabeu to do this.

Granero possesses a great many attributes, and can provide an attacking flare from the middle of the park, or even play just behind the central striker. Add to this an engine that never seems to stop, not to mention a very impressive work rate and you have a player that seems a steal for around the £8 million Real Madrid are willing to let him go for.

The player has so far been linked with Liverpool and Arsenal, and judging from what both have displayed this season, the purchase of Granero is not something that is beyond the realms of possibility.

It is also possible that Real would consider a loan deal for the remainder of the season with the option to buy in the summer, as the player features in Mourinho’s plans about as much as losing yet another Clasico does.

[ad_pod id=’unruly-2′ align=’left’]

Liverpool who are enjoying somewhat of a renaissance under King Kenny are still struggling at home and it is this that will see them miss out on a top four spot if things do not change fast. With the addition of Granero, they would add some much needed fire power in the middle of the park, and legs willing to do the running and cover behind inspirational skipper Gerrard when he makes those frequent bursts forward.

The Merseyside club have been strongly linked with Granero in the last few days, with the player’s agent stating that Liverpool was a possibility, yet with the player and manager so keen to move Granero on, the January transfer window may come slightly too soon for Liverpool who are thought to want to wait until the Summer for the sought after player.

One club who are more than in need of someone like Granero to bolster their squad is Arsenal, who despite the return of Henry still look lacking at times- their recent away game at the liberty stadium being a prime example of this – and have lost players to the African cup of Nations to boot.

Although the player prefers to start in a more advanced position, he is the very definition of versatile, and is well capable of filling a defensive role in the middle of the park – and possesses a wicked shot on goal. Granero could be just the type of versatile player that Wenger needs, and has both the youth and experience to make a real impact for the Gunners. Granero also has a determination about him and a physicality that would not go a miss in the Arsenal midfield.

It would be a mistake for clubs and fans to discount Granero due to the lack of playing time he has under Jose Mourinho when essentially their squad is the best in Europe and Granero is just not fancied by Mourinho. What could be Real’s loss should, if they have any sense about them, be either Arsenal or Liverpool’s gain.

Donovan open to another Everton loan spell

Landon Donovan has admitted that he would be open to another loan spell at Everton in the future, as he concludes his short-term deal against Blackpool on Saturday.

The United States international has spent the last six weeks at Goodison Park on loan from LA Galaxy, the second time he has done so, and would be keen to replicate this in the future.

“I would approach it the same way I have approach it each year,” Donovan told Sky Sports.

“One: Am I physically able to do it. Two: Does he (David Moyes) want me to come back. Three: Do I feel like I can contribute and benefit the club?

“I’m not coming back if it is just for me to have an experience. I have too much respect for the club, manager and players to do that.

“The expectation is very clear if I come back and if I feel I can do that and they want me to come back then I would absolutely do it.

“I know I’ll be back here but I don’t know if I’ll be back as a player, but I hope I will.

“I don’t think my agent would appreciate me saying this is the only club I’d come back to because he’d lose some leverage in negotiations, but I can’t imagine playing anywhere else.

“There is something magical which captures you when you walk into Goodison and it doesn’t let you go,” he concluded.

How Twitter cost me money but restored my faith in football

I’ll be honest with you. I do like a flutter. It doesn’t matter if it’s the horses, the dogs, football or two worms crawling up the garden path. I’m happy to place a wager. One thing I won’t do, however, is back my team to win or lay them to lose. The reason? Passion gets in the way. Unless you’re a cold-hearted punter, the chances are that your bias towards one team will cloud your judgment, thus rendering any bet worthless.

Before Chesterfield’s game at Carlisle on Saturday, however, I did something rash. I placed a bet on the game.

Now, just in case my wife is reading this, I can assure you that it was nothing huge. I placed a small amount of money on an away win and then, as a bit of insurance, another couple of quid on a 1-1 draw. I was sure we wouldn’t lose. This prediction was based on a number of factors, not least that we’d brought in some new players and that their introduction had kick started the team’s season (see last week’s blog). Importantly, it also took on board the enthusiasm that I’d seen all over the Internet, particularly Twitter, from both supporters and players alike.

What this prediction did not take into account was two things: the opposition, of which I knew virtually nothing. And lady luck, of which I know plenty. As it turned out, the 2-1 reverse was a kick in the stones on a number of levels. Not only did Chesterfield FC miss out on the chance to scramble their way out of the relegation zone despite playing really quite well but also my bets went up in smoke.

My mistake was to believe that via Twitter I had some magical inside knowledge to add to what I had seen with my own eyes in recent weeks. What I didn’t factor in was that Carlisle are a half decent side and that when Chesterfield needed a bit of luck towards the end of the game, it evaded them.

And here is my point. Twitter is a platform for uncensored, personal opinion and it has brought fans and players closer together. On Saturday it lost me money but much good has also come of it.

In the good old days we used to bump into the players in the pubs and clubs of Chesterfield after the game on a Saturday night. Then, over a pint, you could exchange views on where things went right or wrong.

That’s not so easy these days. What Twitter has done is replicate that to some extent by giving supporters a window back into the players’ lives. And I believe that’s a good thing, even if it helped to cloud my pre-match judgment.

I believe Twitter is a good thing because it gives players a voice that is not controlled by the football club. For supporters the result is genuine answers to the rumours that we hear and honest appraisals for defeats that we see. The latter was certainly the case on Saturday.

Having put the equivalent of the commentator’s curse (the blogger’s kybosh?) on young James Hurst before the game by saying (on this very website no less) how well he’d been doing since arriving from West Brom, with about five minutes of the game remaining his weak back gifted Carlisle’s Francoise Zoko the chance to win the game, which he duly did.

From 1-0 up Chesterfield had lost. And because I’d been given false hope, I was pretty devastated.

My frustration soon abated though. Not long after the end of the game Hurst himself posted a short but telling tweet that read simply: “Made a horrible error.”

It’s hardly a confession that will rock the football world but at least he was big enough to acknowledge the gaffe in public. It made me remember that he’s only human and that humans make mistakes. And that most of the time they make them unintentionally. I liked the kid again. I liked football again. And, to a certain extent, the pain of defeat went away as you could tell it was hurting him as much as it had hurt us.

For all its ills, its squabbles, its silliness, its ignorance and its sub-standard inside information for the betting punter, social media – and Twitter in particular – has managed to undo one of the curses of the modern game: it has helped to make footballers human again.

For that alone it should be bronzed and mounted.
