Tottenham Hotspur have been told they've got a gem in their squad with "world-class potential", with speed "never seen" from a player in his position.
Spurs form under Ange Postecoglou
Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is now an English top flight record-holder. Indeed, following the Lilywhites' 2-0 home win over Fulham on Monday, the Australian has now overseen the best ever start made by a new manager in the Premier League; guiding Tottenham to seven league wins out of a possible nine while remaining unbeaten. It's been truly remarkable considering they lost star striker and all-time record goalscorer Harry Kane to Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window, with a few players in particular now shining under Postecoglou's tutelage.
Son Heung-min and summer signing James Maddison, as displayed by their latest heroics against Fulham, have formed a deadly partnership going forward. The former is now rediscovering the kind of form which saw him share the 2022 Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah, while the latter is proving one of football's biggest bargains this year.
Both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are also starring at the heart of Postecoglou's defence, with former Spurs striker Mido recently admitting he's been shocked by the Dutchman's form.
“I understand the idea of Ange [Postecoglou] that he wants a left-footed centre-back to start from the back and to have a better angle to see the whole of the pitch playing the ball between the lines and the diagonals," said Mido to talkSPORT.
"But defensively, I was really worried that this guy would struggle in the Premier League. I know in the Premier League that you always play against big guys up front and the likes of [Erling] Haaland and [Ivan] Toney, all the big guys, it’s very difficult to defend. It’s not like the Dutch league, it’s different, it could be a shock for him. But to be honest to the lad, he’s been brilliant."
Micky van de Ven news
Like Maddison, the 22-year-old gem is proving one of the summer window's best buys thus far, especially given Spurs chairman Daniel Levy paid just £43 million to prise him away from Wolfsburg. The Dutchman suits Postecoglou's free-flowing, attack-minded system as a pacy, assured and ball-playing defender.
Micky van de Ven
Now, former head of Ajax talent development Ruben Jongkid has joined in on the praise for Van de Ven; revealing how the player's potential was first spotted long ago while overseeing his development at Dutch second tier side Voldendam. Speaking to inews, the coach insisted that Spurs have a player with "world-class potential" and "never seen" speed for a defender. Jongkid, going one step further, suggested that he is even better than Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni.
“His athletic ability and speed, I’ve never seen that for a centre-back or defender,” said Jongkid.“This is world-class potential so don’t come with €1.5m when [Alessandro] Bastoni [Inter’s left-footed centre-back who Spurs targeted last year] who probably has less talent already went for €31m."It will be interesting to see how van de Ven grows as a Tottenham player, but it's safe to say he's made the best possible start.

The Real Madrid superstar has been sanctioned for his red card against Valencia in a controversial 2-2 draw. Former Arsenal star Ray Parlour, who works as a pundit for talkSPORT, has suggested that one star could join Tottenham in future seasons.
Who have Tottenham signed 2023?
High-flying Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou was significantly backed over the 2023 summer transfer window, as his new club brought in seven major signings in total. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, young centre-back Ashley Phillips, assured defender Micky van de Ven, England midfield star James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon, exciting striker Alejo Veliz and Wales forward Brennan Johnson all signed for Spurs before deadline day, with a few already justifying their price tags.
Maddison, who put pen to paper on a £40 million move from Championship side Leicester City, has gone on to dazzle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium whilst becoming a real fan favourite. His two goals and two assists in the Premier League highlight his real impact; while there is an argument to be made that Spurs had been missing a player of his ilk since the departure of Christian Eriksen in 2020.
Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecoglou
Meanwhile, defender van de Ven has stood out among Postecoglou's most reliable performers as an assured partner to fellow centre-back Cristian Romero. In part, there contribution has resulted in Spurs tasting victory in four out of their opening six league games; all while maintaining an impressive unbeaten streak.
Wins over Bournemouth, Man United, Burnley and Sheffield United have highlighted Tottenham's imperiousness so far under Postecoglou, with 2-2 draws at Brentford and Arsenal demonstrating their ability to battle their way back from deficits.
What's the latest Spurs transfer news?
Regardless, there is room for improvement in terms of squad depth, as the club did attempt to sign another defensive option but faltered in a late summer move for Bournemouth centre-back Lloyd Kelly. Reports suggest they could go back in for the Englishman this winter, alongside fellow rumoured transfer target Gleison Bremer.
A new striker to replace Harry Kane has also been mentioned for the new year, as Brentford's Ivan Toney has emerged as a possible option for Spurs recently. Kane's departure over the summer window was viewed as a significant blow for Postecoglou and Spurs, with the 6 foot 2 striker now really impressing at new club Bayern Munich.
However, Parlour says Kane will have his eye on Alan Shearer's all-time Premier League goalscoring record and could well make a return to England – which would give hope for Spurs given they've got a buy-back clause and first option to sign him in future.
Indeed, both Man United and Spurs have reason to believe a future move may be possible, as Parlour said to TEAMtalk this week:
“I know there’s a lower division, but you know he could play at a good standard in the Premier League. So, I think Harry will [return].
“If it all goes well for Bayern Munich and they can win a few trophies, Harry will be delighted. And the Champions League is obviously the one from Bayern Munich’s point of view. Again, I’m sure he would come back at a certain time.
“But I’m sure he will look at that record ]Shearer's] and say it’s still there to be beaten, and If I can get a few good years in Germany, win a few trophies, who knows, I could come back and still win that the record off Shearer, which would be an amazing achievement to have the Premier League record and England record. After a few trophies in Germany, that would probably be the icing on the cake for his career!”
The return of an FA Cup-style knockout competition and the restructuring of the County Championship into a conference system will be on the agenda when an ECB working party meets in the coming days
George Dobell17-Apr-2018The return of an FA Cup-style knockout competition and the restructuring of the County Championship into a conference system will be on the agenda when an ECB working party meets in the coming days.ESPNcricinfo understands the working party, to be chaired by Leicestershire chief executive Wasim Khan, will discuss options for the domestic season once the new-team T20 competition starts in 2020.Among the issues it will consider is the possibility of playing the 50-over competition as a knockout tournament involving the Minor Counties. Such a competition was a feature of English cricket for more than 40 years – at various times known as the Gillette Cup, the NatWest Trophy and the C&G Trophy – but in 2006 the tournament was altered to be played as a league without the involvement of the Minor Counties.A return, it is argued, would ensure a good level of cricket is played across the country – rather than just at the 18 first-class county venues – providing opportunities to capitalise on the projected popularity of the new-team T20 competition. It currently looks all but certain that the system of promotion and relegation in Championship cricket will be replaced a conference system from 2020 – ending the two-division structure that has been in place for two decades. The benefits, in the view of the counties, is that all 18 will start the season with a chance of winning the competition and there will be less pressure to make short-term decisions about playing opportunities in a bid to achieve promotion or avoid relegation. This, they argue, will create greater opportunities for young players and reduce the temptation to sign Kolpak registrations and the like. It is also likely that most teams will play fewer Championship games – probably 12 – per season.Andrew Strauss, the director of England cricket, is understood to be warming to the idea of conferences having initially been unenthusiastic. There is also a sense around the counties that those teams who find themselves towards the bottom of Division Two on a regular basis might, without intervention, start to prioritise their white-ball aspirations. The counties will also discuss whether they should play Championship, 50-over cricket or a mix during the window allocated to the new-team T20 competition. The original plan was to play 50-over cricket during the six-week window, but some counties have suggested they would prefer to play first-class cricket in order to minimise the loss of commercial opportunities from 50-over games that could be overshadowed by the new competition. Some also argue that spinners might benefit from the opportunity to play on dry pitches in August. With the new-team competition likely to take the best 100 or so players out of the county game, however, there is a fear that playing Championship cricket in that window will dilute the quality of competition. Test cricket is also scheduled to continue during the window. There has also been a suggestion that a squad of recently released professionals – something like the Unicorns squad of recent years – might be assembled to either play in the 50-over competition or provide substitutes to those teams who have lost players to the new-team T20 tournament. This, it is argued, would provide a second chance for players who would otherwise struggle for opportunities in the professional game.
Leeds United are interested in signing a player from their Championship rivals this week, according to a key update from reliable journalist Phil Hay.
Are Leeds making more signings?
The Whites knew how important it was to have a strong summer transfer window, having performed so poorly in the Premier League last season, suffering relegation to the Championship in the process after a string of bad results left them in the mire.
It was clear that Leeds were going to find it difficult to keep hold of all of their key players, but they have largely done well to keep some important faces at Elland Road, not least young star Wilfried Gnonto, who looks set to stay after initially submitting a transfer request.
Meanwhile, a number of new signings have come in to bolster Daniel Farke's squad, with Ethan Ampadu a strong addition from Chelsea who can play at centre-back and in midfield, and Joel Piroe arriving from Swansea City to be a ruthless focal point in attack.
There is plenty of hope that more business will be completed before deadline day ends later this week, however, with Joseph Painsil and Nadiem Amiri continuing to be worked on, as Leeds look to bring them in from Genk and Bayer Leverkusen respectively. Now, a fresh target has emerged, in what could be an intriguing piece of business.
Writing on X on Monday, The Athletic's Hay claimed that Leeds are looking to secure the loan signing of Leicester City left-back Luke Thomas before the current transfer window shuts on Friday night.
"Leicester City defender Luke Thomas on Leeds United’s radar. Left-back options reduced by Sam Byram’s injury. Two enquiries for Thomas so far. Leicester unsure about loaning to a Championship rival."
Thomas could be a shrewd signing by Leeds if they are able to get a deal over the line this summer, with the 22-year-old someone who appears to have a bright future with plenty of experience.
The left-back has played 56 times in the Premier League with Leicester, and made 85 appearances in total for the Foxes, while 15 caps for England's Under-21s further show what a talented young player he is.
Thomas has found regular football hard to come by at the King Power Stadium of late, however, starting only 11 league games last season and not yet featured in 2023/24, so he may jump at the chance to enjoy a new challenge with Leeds.

The young defender has been described as a player wit "incredible composure" and "aggressive" by Brendan Rodgers in the past, and he should only get better with age, joining Leeds as someone who could immediately battle Sam Byram for minutes from the off, and maturing as the years pass.
Whether Leicester are willing to sell Thomas to a direct rival remains to be seen, however, as Hay alludes to, but if they allow the move to go through, it could be a signing that goes a little more under the radar than someone like Piroe, but still be a smart piece of business in its own right.
Arsenal have now been given a new update on their pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi in a report from The Daily Mail.
What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?
With Mikel Arteta now running the rule over potential replacements for Jurrien Timber, a loan deal for Barcelona defender Eric Garcia is now being worked on, and the manager will be well aware of the 22-year-old's capabilities, having worked with him at Manchester City.
It remains to be seen whether the Gunners are able to get a deal for the Spain international over the line, as Barca would rather sell him permanently, but they have plenty of alternative options in mind, should they miss out.
Torino's Perr Schuurs has also been named as a transfer target for Arsenal, while journalist Rudy Galetti has stated that Galatasaray's Victor Nelsson, who has a release clause of €25m (£21.5m), is also being considered.
Galetti claims the north Londoners have four options on their shortlist of targets to replace Timber, and one of those players could be Crystal Palace's Guehi, with The Daily Mail recently providing an update on their interest in the defender.
The 23-year-old is said to be "of increasing interest" to Arteta, perhaps in light of the news that Timber has suffered an ACL injury, which is set to keep him sidelined for quite some time.
At the moment, the Gunners are yet to make a concrete move for the Englishman, but previous reports have detailed that Palace are set to hold out for at least £50m if they are to let him leave this summer, so he will not come cheap.
Journalist Ryan Taylor has claimed that Arsenal potentially re-entering the market will "depend on finances", but they could be set for a financial boost in the near future, as they have agreed to sell Folarin Balogun to AS Monaco for a fee of £34.3m.

Is Marc Guehi left footed?
The Express have claimed that Arteta is prepared to add another left-sided defender to his squad this summer, and despite being predominantly right-footed, the Crystal Palace ace typically plays on the left of the centre-back pairing at Selhurst Park.
As such, the 6ft defender could be the perfect replacement for Timber, particularly considering he has been lauded as "incredible" by BBC Sport reporter Alex Howell, and teammate Joel Ward believes he can still get a whole lot better, saying:
“Marc is second to none. He’s only just kind of scratched the surface. If he continues to move in the direction that he is, he’s got the world at his feet.”
Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.
The England international has been indispensable for Palace over the past two seasons, missing just three games in the Premier League during that time period, indicating he could now be ready to take the next step and join one of the league's top clubs.
However, it is unclear whether Arsenal will be able to fork out another £50m on a late addition this summer, having already shelled out around €234.93m (£201.6m) on a number of high-profile additions.

Chelsea could be set to secure yet another summer signing as Mauricio Pochettino aims to strengthen his side ahead of the 2023/24 season.
What's the latest on Kudus to Chelsea?
The Stamford Bridge side have been linked recently with a move for Ajax starlet, Mohammed Kudus as Pochettino aims to bolster his attacking options, and new a development has occurred with regard to a potential move.
Journalist Rudy Galetti tweeted: “#Chelsea had first contacts with #Ajax for Mohammed #Kudus.
“Understand that #CFC have verbally agreed the personal terms with the Ghanaian player: now it’s up to clubs to find an agreement.
“Other 2 English teams have showed a concrete interest in him: evolving situation.”
It would be a major statement of intent should they lure the youngster away from Ajax to England, especially considering teams such as Manchester United and Arsenal are showing interest and they have Champions League football to look forward to next term.
The 22-year-old will only cost the Blues around £40m, which given their recent extravagant activity in the transfer market, it could be a bargain.
Could Mohammed Kudus replace Mason Mount?
Attacking midfielder Mason Mount departed Chelsea this summer, joining Manchester United in a deal which could be worth £60m, becoming one of the several players to leave the club.
Since making his debut under Frank Lampard back in 2019, Mount made nearly 200 appearances for the Blues and registered 70 goal contributions in that time period, a solid return.
Last season featured just three goals and six assists across 35 games and with one year left on his deal, Chelsea clearly felt £60m was a decent enough figure to let him depart.
Kudus has all the attributes to replace Mount in the Chelsea squad, and given that he is younger, he has the potential to surpass his achievements.
The Ajax starlet was among one of the finest attacking midfielders when compared to his positional peers over the previous 365 days, ranking in the top 2% for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.55), top 1% for successful take ons per 90 (4.57) and top 4% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 (6.27) and this clearly indicates that he is a major threat in the opposition penalty area.
In comparison, Mount registered just 0.13 non-penalty goals, 0.86 successful take ons and 3.32 touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 during the same period, suggesting that Kudus could even be a major upgrade on the Englishman.
Not only did Kudus register six goal contributions in the Champions League last season – four goals and two assists – but he demonstrated his attacking qualities on the biggest stage of them all – the World Cup.
He scored twice in the competition while also succeeding with 3.3 dribbles per game – a success rate of 71% – and the youngster ranked first across the whole Ghana squad for these metrics. It wasn’t enough to prevent them from falling at the first hurdle, however, the world got a glimpse of his outstanding talents.
It’s no wonder that talent scout Jacek Kulig lauded the player as “electric” and should he carry on the form which saw him explode in the Champions League and the World Cup, he could be a stunning success at Chelsea as the man to replace Mount.
