Chahal bags four in India's biggest T20 win

Chasing 181, Sri Lanka crumbled to 87 all out as India’s bowlers mastered dew-sodden conditions at the Barabati Stadium

Dasgupta – Dhoni at his best when he has 10 overs to bat

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsDew was always going to play a role in the first T20I at the Barabati Stadium, and both teams knew it. Sri Lanka picked just one specialist spinner, packed their side with seam options, and gave themselves the early advantage by winning the toss.Unlike a lot of T20 games in India, however, there was dew all the way through this one, and not just in the second innings, and one set of bowlers handled it far, far better than the other. Sri Lanka’s quicks struggled: Nuwan Pradeep and Thisara Perera sent down five full-tosses in the last two overs of India’s innings, and MS Dhoni and Manish Pandey clattered two of them for four and two for six. In all, India scored 61 in their last four overs.India, unlike their opponents, trusted their spinners to deal with the dew and ran away to their biggest win in T20Is. Both their wristspinners prospered, and Yuzvendra Chahal finished with figures of 4 for 23. Chasing 181, Sri Lanka crumbled against pressure from India’s bowlers and pressure from the scoreboard, and crashed to 87 all out, their innings lasting just 16 overs, featuring only six boundaries. If the bowlers were able to control the slippery ball and land it on a decent area, there was help to be had from a two-paced surface. Sri Lanka did this patchily in the early part of India’s innings. Pradeep and Angelo Mathews extracted unexpected bounce to send back Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer, but not before they had put on useful stands of 38 and 63 with KL Rahul. There were plenty of freebies from Sri Lanka’s bowlers, and Rahul was particularly ruthless on anything short or on his pads, a pulled six off Mathews and a pick-up flick to long leg off Pradeep the standout shots among his eight boundaries. When he was bowled by a Thisara slower ball for 61, India were 112 for 3 in the 15th over.India were in a good position, but they weren’t yet running away with the game. It was here that Sri Lanka’s bowling really lost control. Dhoni and Pandey added to the pressure on them by manufacturing boundaries out of nowhere. In the 18th over, Dhoni guessed correctly that Thisara would send down a slower offcutter, and he walked across his stumps, waited, and paddled him away to the right of short fine leg. Then, bowling what was meant to be the last ball of the 19th, Pradeep sent down a chest-high full-toss outside off stump. Pandey ramped it away for six over fine third-man, and put away the resultant free-hit as well – another full-toss – slapping it to the cover boundary.Sri Lanka lost Niroshan Dickwella in the second over of their chase, a clever slower ball from Jaydev Unadkat foiling his plans to hit him inside-out. But they still had something going for them when Upul Tharanga was at the crease – he launched Hardik Pandya for a big six over midwicket in the third over, and then, messing with India’s calculations of where to place their two deep fielders, swept and shovelled Chahal for a four and a six off successive balls in the fifth over.Chahal was under pressure, and Sri Lanka weren’t badly placed at all at 39 for 1. But another attempted sweep from Tharanga resulted in a bottom-edge onto pad and then into Dhoni’s gloves, and just like that Sri Lanka’s momentum stalled.Kusal Perera, playing his first international game – and only his second match – since going home injured from the Champions Trophy in June, struggled for rhythm. Angelo Mathews, new to the crease, soaked up a few dot balls and by the time he popped a return catch back to Chahal in the eighth over, the required rate had climbed past 10.There was no release from Chahal or Kuldeep Yadav, no soft full-tosses or long-hops. Sri Lanka didn’t hit a boundary between the fifth and 15th overs, and in that time they lost 7 for 37 in 60 balls.Asela Gunaratne walked past one fired down the leg side, and Dhoni completed a fortunate stumping, fumbling the ball onto the stumps. Dasun Shanaka, having looked all at sea against Chahal’s googly, holed out off Kuldeep. Chahal then spun his wrong’un past Thisara, and Dhoni completed a more convincing stumping. Kusal, having hacked and slashed ineffectually for 27 balls, finally fell in the 13th over when he miscued a big heave off Kuldeep. Sri Lanka were 70 for 7, and the end was near.

Karnataka, Delhi confirm passage to knockouts

R Samarth and Mayank Agarwal struck centuries on the final day, as a drawn game against Uttar Pradesh ensured Karnataka‘s place in the knockouts on the basis of first-innings points. The Karnataka openers put up an unbroken stand of 262, after their bowlers had established up a first-innings lead of 324. The three points they earned put them at the top of the Group A table with 26 points; with Delhi on 23, the massive lead the two teams have in points have ensured their passage to the knockouts.UP’s response to Karnataka’s mammoth 655 had floundered on the third day itself, as they lost five wickets by stumps. The overnight pair of Rinku Singh and wicketkeeper Upendra Yadav couldn’t go on to build a big partnership, with Rinku dismissed in the fifth over of the day for 73. Left to bat with the tail, Upendra stitched a useful ninth-wicket partnership of 40 with Ankit Rajpoot (19) to lift Uttar Pradesh over 300. Upendra was eventually unbeaten on 49, with UP dismissed for 331.Karnataka then put up another dominating show with the bat. Dismissed for 16 in the first innings, Samarth capitalized on the opportunity to bring up his third century of this Ranji season. His 126 came off 183 balls with 11 fours and two sixes. At the other end, Agarwal scored his third century in as many games, pairing a 90 in the first innings with 133 off 171 balls. The pair scored at close to 4.5 runs an over.Ambati Rayudu’s unbeaten 52 anchored Hyderabad‘s chase of 142 in their four-wicket win over Assam in Guwahati.Assam’s seamers, Arup Das and Rajjakuddin Ahmed had lifted the side’s hopes of defending a small total by rooting out Hyderabad’s top order for 18 within the first seven overs. Sixteen-year-old legspinner Riyan Parag’s two wickets then reduced Hyderabad to 69 for 5 before Rayudu and Akash Bhandari comfortably secured the win.Earlier, Assam had resumed their second innings from 300 for 7, and the overnight batsman Amit Sinha went on to complete his second first-class century. However, the lack of partners at the other end meant that Sinha could help Assam add only 31 runs to their overnight total.

Aston Villa: Monchi Preparing £13m Offer To Sign Former PL Ace

An update has emerged on Aston Villa and their efforts to bolster the playing squad ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign…

What's the latest Aston Villa transfer news?

According to Spanish outlet Sport, the Villans are preparing to make an offer of €15m (£13m) to sign Real Madrid central midfielder Dani Ceballos during the summer transfer window.

The report claims that Unai Emery is keen on a deal to bring the former Arsenal technician to Villa Park and has pushed for Monchi to test the LaLiga giants' resolve with a bid for his services.

It states that Italian side AC Milan are also interested in signing the 26-year-old gem but the Villa boss is hoping to use the lure of regular game time to convince him to make the move to England after the pair worked together at The Emirates.

How good is Dani Ceballos?

The Spain international is an excellent midfielder who could be a fantastic addition to the squad as he has already proven himself in the Premier League and is coming off the back of an impressive season with Real Madrid.

Ceballos averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.93 across 30 appearances for Carlo Ancelotti's team, which is a score that only three Villa players were able to beat, and the club's interest in him is bad news for Leander Dendoncker, who did not enjoy a successful year.

The 28-year-old dud averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.70 in 24 Premier League outings for the Villans, which placed him 13th within the squad, as he struggled to deliver consistently good performances after his move to the club last summer.

Aston Villa midfielder Leander Dendoncker.

It was reported last month that the Villans would be willing to cash in on the Belgium international for a fee of up to €12m (£10m) amid interest from a number of clubs in France.

The arrival of Ceballos could accelerate any potential negotiations surrounding an exit for the former Wolverhampton Wanderers star, as it would push him further down the pecking order, and he would then face the prospect of a season of sitting on the bench or in the stands.

Dendoncker failed to contribute much to Villa on the pitch last term as he ranked outside of the top ten within the Villa squad with 0.3 key passes and one tackle per game, whilst he completed 88% of his attempted passes, to go along with his unimpressive average rating, as per Sofascore.

Ceballos, meanwhile, made one key pass and 1.4 tackles per match last term for Real Madrid, which would have placed him in the top seven performers in those respective statistics for the Villans, and could make a greater impact at both ends of the pitch with his ability to open up opposition defences whilst also being able to cut out attackers to regain possession.

The Spanish maestro's last Premier League season for Arsenal also suggests that he has the ability to push Dendoncker further down Emery's plans.

He averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.06 across 25 outings in the 2020/21 campaign as the talented ace made 1.1 key passes and 1.5 tackles per clash.

Douglas Luiz (7.10) was the only Villa player who managed to record a Sofascore rating of 7.00 or higher last term and this suggests that Ceballos, who was once dubbed an "animal" by Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, could be an outstanding performer for the club.

Therefore, his arrival would be terrible news for Dendoncker as it could leave the Belgian flop out of the first-team picture with the likes of Ceballos, Luis, Jacob Ramsey, John McGinn, and Boubacar Kamara, which could force him to explore a move to France.

Traffic delays and Noema-Barnett down Somerset

Somerset arrived just in time for the 6.30pm start at a sold-out Bristol but as Gloucestershire took West Country bragging rights they rather wished they hadn’t

Gloucestershire gained derby bragging rights over their local rivals with an seven-wicket NatWest T20 Blast victory over Somerset in front of an 8,000 sell-out crowd at BristolSomerset could muster only 146 all out after arriving at the ground late due to traffic congestion. Johann Myburgh and Craig Overton were the main contributors, while David Payne and Benny Howell were the pick of the Gloucestershire attack. In reply, the home side never looked in trouble as Ian Cockbain, Michael Klinger, and man-of-the-match Kieran Noema-Barnett (33 off 12 balls) took them to their target with ten balls to spare. The match began 45 minutes late after Somerset’s team coach had only just arrived at the scheduled start time of 6.30pm.Somerset director of cricket Matthew Maynard said: “Some of our batsmen didn’t give themselves a chance to assess the pitch and there was some dull thinking at times. Johann Myburgh showed what was possible when taking a few balls to play yourself in.”We are not always going to play on perfect wickets and sometimes it is necessary to take stock of the situation. It was probably the poorest we have batted in the competition and we need to bounce back quickly against Surrey on Sunday.”As if their late arrival was not bad enough, Somerset lost the toss and their innings was something of a roller-coaster, openers Steve Davies and Lewis Gregory departing with only 13 balls bowled and 12 runs on the board. Payne was the successful bowler in both cases.Myburgh then looked to transform the match with a brilliant 18-ball cameo that featured 5 fours and 2 sixes. The South African took 24 off an over from left-arm spinner Tom SmithSkipper Jim Allenby offered solid support and at the end of the six-over power-play his team were well placed on 66 for two. From there some kamikaze cricket saw Somerset plunge to 90 for seven, James Hildreth perishing to a reverse sweep off only his second ball and Tom Abell running himself out attempting a suicidal single.Gloucestershire skipper Michael Klinger kept faith with Smith and was rewarded when the bowler conceded only 12 off his final three overs.Howell produced his customary changes of pace to flummox the batsman and did not concede a single boundary in his four overs.Overton gave Somerset some hope with some big hits at the end, but the total still looked well below par on a decent batting strip. So it proved as Klinger and Phil Mustard gave Gloucestershire a fast start, Klinger hitting Lewis Gregory over mid-wicket for six and Mustard clearing the ropes off Tim Groenewald.Klinger was struck a painful blow in the ribs by a quick delivery from Paul van Meekeren, in the sixth over, but continued after treatment. The opening stand was worth 48 when Mustard (29) drove a catch to long-on off Roelof van der Merwe.Ian Cockbain lofted Max Waller over long-on for six as Gloucestershire eased towards the required run rate and repeated the treatment off Overton. He and Klinger brought the 100 up in the 14th over and by then the outcome was all but settled. Klinger fell for 35, but with only 45 needed off six overs, the hosts were well in control.Noema-Barnett eased any suggestion of late nerves with successive straight sixes of the previously impressive van Meekeren and followed up with two more maximums off van der Merwe to the delight of home fans before holing out with the job virtually done.Jack Taylor finished the match with a six to complete a miserable night for Somerset, who were well beaten.

Celtic: Rodgers Can Find Ralston 2.0 In 17 y/o Prodigy

Celtic officially confirmed that captain Callum McGregor put pen to paper on a new five-year contract with the Scottish giants earlier this week.

The 30-year-old central midfielder has been with the club since the age of nine, when he joined the academy, and has won 20 trophies at Parkhead, including a world-leading five trebles.

McGregor should be an inspiration for players coming through the youth team set-up in Glasgow as he has proven what can be accomplished if you put your head down and remain loyal to the Hoops throughout your career.

He is not the only academy graduate in the first-team squad, though, as right-back Anthony Ralston has played 85 senior matches since breaking through.

The Scotland international, who enjoyed three loan spells away from Paradise before making his mark at Celtic, has made 44 Scottish Premiership appearances since the start of the 2021/22 campaign.

Celtic defender Anthony Ralston.

Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers is seemingly using pre-season to see if he can spot the next talent to emerge from the youth team as the likes of Josh Dede, Daniel Kelly, Mackenzie Carse, and Bruno Davidson have all been spotted training with the senior group.

What position does Josh Dede play in?

The 17-year-old prospect previously played as a right winger but is now predominantly deployed as a right-back, with the Celtic's official website having him down as a defender.

Journalist Lewis Laird claimed that the full-back has an "exciting future" ahead of him in the game, which is backed up by his emergence for the B team in spite of his young age.

Manager Tommy McIntyre stated at the end of the 2021/22 campaign that the talented gem has a "big future" and said that Dede, along with his teammates, will play if they are good enough, irrespective of their age or experience.

The right-back seemingly did enough to convince his coach that he was good enough to play for the B team as the teenage prodigy racked up 15 Lowland League appearances, which means that the youngster has played men's football in the fifth tier of the Scottish pyramid.

Only 16-year-old Corey Thomson played in 15 or more matches below the age of 17, with a number of 18 and 19-year-old starlets competing for positions across the team, which highlights how impressive Dede's emergence in the side was.

The 17-year-old battler has also done enough to become a regular for Scotland at U17 level, with 11 caps since his debut in March of last year, which shows how highly he is rated by his coaches on the international scene.

His form for the academy has clearly caught the eye of Rodgers as the Northern Irish tactician has brought the promising defender into the first team for pre-season training, potentially with a view to using him in one of the friendlies to see how he fares in a senior environment.

Therefore, the Celtic head coach could unearth the club's next Ralston as Dede is an emerging right-back who could make the step up if he is able to continue his development in the months and years to come, given his impressive progression so far.

Scorchers win big after Tye's hat-trick

The Perth Scorchers claimed top spot in the BBL table with a 27-run win against Brisbane Heat at the Gabba

The Report by Geoff Lemon11-Jan-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsBrisbane Heat’s asking rate had climbed very high by the time Andrew Tye’s hat-trick came•Getty ImagesBrisbane Heat became the first victims of Cricket Australia’s selection policy, choking on a run chase of 157 against Perth Scorchers that their big-hitting opener Chris Lynn would normally have devoured for breakfast.Instead, having created the sensation of this tournament by forming the opening pair known as the Bash Brothers with former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum, Lynn was a spectator after being picked for Australia’s ODI series against Pakistan. It was a stark reminder of how uncomfortably these two forms of limited-overs cricket currently coexist in the Australian summer schedule. The unstoppable side of recent weeks was bowled out for 129 in the last over, finished off by an Andrew Tye hat-trick as the pace-change specialist finished with 4 for 22.In Lynn’s absence, the Heat could not create a sense of threat at the top of the order. His opening replacement, wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson, lasted all of three deliveries before left-arm menace Mitchell Johnson slanted a ball across him that took the edge to a well-placed Ashton Turner at slip.Johnson’s next over had Sam Heazlett miscuing a straight hit to Ashton Agar at mid-off, and from this unaccustomed position of disadvantage, McCullum skied a straight hit to mid-on one ball after pulling Jhye Richardson into the square-leg stands. From there the mounting run rate kept the pressure high, and wickets fell regularly. Test opener Joe Burns and former Adelaide Striker Alex Ross put on 43, but when Burns tried to force the pace, Agar grabbed a brilliant catch running back towards long-on.Michael Klinger held another running catch to get rid of Nathan Reardon, giving the microphone-wearing Scorchers captain the chance to chat breathlessly to Australian coach and selector Darren Lehmann as the latter moonlighted in the television commentary box, curious given Klinger is vying for national T20 selection. While Ross attempted to bat through the innings with a 40-ball 39, he got very lucky in the 12th over when his reverse sweep against Agar rolled back solidly into the stumps. Like a home-series umpire, the heavy Zing bail was unmoved.Nonetheless, Agar’s four overs for 18 runs were instrumental in slowing Heat’s chase, which looked over long before Tye could snuff it out.Earlier, Klinger had played to perfection the role Ross was attempting, batting through most of the innings for 81 in a knock that combined consolidation and counterattack.Conditions were trying: opening partner Shaun Marsh slashed a catch to third man, then Sam Whiteman hooked another, two overs after being struck a vicious blow to the head by English speedster Tymal Mills. Under a rare use of the concussion substitute rule, Cameron Bancroft entered the fray to keep wicket when Heat batted.Young legspinner Mitchell Swepson bowled his four overs unchanged for 22 runs, picking up the normally silky Ian Bell at long-on and the destructive Ashton Turner off a top edge.Around that damage, Klinger muscled sixes and fours down the ground and over midwicket, including one that Burns caught but carried over the rope. Klinger was finally out with seven balls left in the innings, and recent Test selection Hilton Cartwright could not ice the innings with 13 from 17.The Scorchers total shouldn’t have been enough, but the Lynn-less Heat were not able to keep up, loosening their hold on top spot with Sydney Sixers level on eight points, and Melbourne Stars on six with a game in hand.Perhaps as significant as the loss, though, was news that McCullum now faces suspension for a slow over rate, a punishment that Heat has indicated an intention to protest. They had better. To lose one Bash Brother may be regarded as misfortune. To lose two begins to look like carelessness.

Daniel Levy Eyeing Double Spurs Transfer For Ange

Tottenham Hotspur are going into this summer's transfer window with two new centre-backs on their wishlist for Ange Postecgolou.

Who do Spurs want to sign this summer?

Postecoglou has not even officially started his work as the new Tottenham manager as the Australian awaits 1 July before being able to start his duties.

However, there is the expectation that he will be working behind the scenes to provide his influence as Tottenham look to attack the summer transfer window.

And it seems as if that may already be taking effect with the Lilywhites believed to be in talks with Brentford to agree a fee for their goalkeeper David Raya.

Indeed, it has been reported by Fabrizio Romano that the Spaniard is keen to make the move to north London and has already agreed personal terms with Spurs.

Brentford are believed to value the goalkeeper at around £40m but the Lilywhites are hoping to see that price tag reduced given the 27-year-old only has one-year remaining on his current deal.

However, it is seemingly not just between the sticks where Postecoglou is eyeing improvement over the summer window.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Alasdair Gold has claimed the north London side are targeting the addition of a further two centre-backs:

"Obviously, they're going to have to bring in centre-backs. I said the plan way back previously was that they were going to try and bring in two centre-backs in this window. I think that remains the same because purely the higher line that Postecoglou will play. That's not going to suit a lot of the defenders that are there."

Will Spurs sign Clement Lenglet?

Last summer, it was believed Spurs were keen to bring in Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan, however, the Italian ended up remaining at the San Siro.

Instead, the north London side were forced to settle for Barcelona's Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan which did not include the option to make his stay permanent.

The Frenchman is now set to return to the newly-crowned La Liga champions with his loan deal coming to an end, but there is the belief that Spurs are looking to secure his services permanently.

Tottenham's Clement Lenglet

Indeed, it has been claimed Tottenham have held talks with Barcelona and could even see Lenglet sign permanently for around £4m as Barca look to clear the decks.

Defence is certainly an area which is in dire need of improvements this summer after what proved a dreadful campaign for Tottenham's backline.

The Lilywhites ended the campaign having conceded a whopping 63 goals in the Premier League which was only beaten by five other teams.

However, what will be interesting to see is whether Lenglet could potentially be counted as one of the two desired centre-back arrivals if he is to join.

This will surely not go down too well with the Spurs supporters considering he spent the 2022/23 campaign in north London.
