Arsenal make Danilo offer

Arsenal have begun their move for Palmeiras youngster Danilo, and there are even reports in the player’s homeland about a possible bid.

The lowdown: Rising star

Signed permanently from fellow Brazilian outfit PFC Cajazeiras in 2020 following a successful loan spell in the academy ranks, Danilo has continued to go from strength to strength in the senior set-up.

The 21-year-old defensive midfielder has already amassed 128 first-team outings despite his tender years and was called up to the senior Brazil squad by Tite earlier this year.

Now, following injury blows to both Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey, the Gunners are seemingly eyeing up a move for Danilo to strengthen the midfield department at the Emirates Stadium…

The latest: Approach made

According to South American source Callum Williams, a reporter and commentator for the Copa Libertadores, the Gunners have ‘sped up’ their move for Danilo due to Elneny’s injury.

“I’m told this morning that #Arsenal have once again inquired about #Palmeiras midfielder Danilo. Ferreira, Pereira and co thought to be asking around $25m. Process sped up due to injury to Elneny.”

Goal Brazil have added their own claims to the news, believing Arsenal have actually submitted an official bid to sign the talented sensation.

It’s claimed that the north Londoners have ‘submitted a proposal’ of £20million to sign Danilo, which does seem to coincide with the fee Williams is hearing.

The report states that the ‘tendency’ from Palmeiras is to reject the offer for the starlet, who was actually tipped to be a ‘long term Xhaka replacement’ by popular Arsenal writer Tim Stillman.

The verdict: Break the bank

Linked with a move for Leicester City star Youri Tielemans, it seems Edu and Arteta will attempt to add a midfielder to the ranks before the September 1 deadline, and Danilo looks like an exciting and younger alternative.

During 2021/22, he has scored seven times and provided three assists in 45 appearances across all competitions, showcasing attacking ability and durability that would be pivotal to Arteta’s ranks.

Within that Brasileiro Serie A campaign, the exciting prodigy won 4.1 duels and 2.2 tackles per game (Sofascore) – those numbers are indeed comparable with the likes of Partey, Elneny and Xhaka.

Holding an estimated value of £22.5million and under contract until 2026 (Transfermarkt), Danilo’s market value has tripled since last summer, and Arsenal would be wise to make sure they are the main beneficiaries of his upwards trajectory.

Everton move for Villa striker Watkins

Everton have reportedly made a move to try and sign Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.

The Lowdown: Conflict with Gerrard?

According to Football Insider, Steven Gerrard and Watkins ‘do not see eye to eye’, fuelling speculation that he may be willing to let the striker go in this transfer window for the right price.

Gerrard also stripped Tyrone Mings of the captaincy just days before the Premier League started, and he was an unused substitute in their opening game away at Bournemouth (Mirror), suggesting that all might not be rosy behind the scenes at Villa Park.

The Latest: Everton move

As per Football Insider, the Goodison Park outfit have now made their move to try and sign Watkins, and have officially registered their interest in the England international.

Villa are ‘open’ to letting him go, as they work on bringing in a new ‘A-list’ frontman to the Midlands.

The Verdict: Big coup

It would certainly be a big coup if the Merseyside club could steal Watkins off of the hands of their rivals.

Hailed as ‘one of the best strikers in the Premier League’ by former top-flight manager Alex McLeish, Watkins has reached double figures for goals in each of the last two seasons in the division, while also registering a handy nine assists (Transfermarkt).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-7/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Two of those goal involvements actually came against Frank Lampard’s team last weekend, so they know full well what he is capable of.

Nonetheless, the Toffees are desperate for a striker following the injury to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Watkins offers the quality and experience needed in order to lead the line.

Sunderland handed Archer transfer blow

Sunderland have been hit with a setback in their pursuit of Cameron Archer in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Premier League reporter Rob Scanlon has revealed that Aston Villa will be keeping hold of the youngster for at least the first half of the 2022/23 campaign.

The reporter recently interviewed Steven Gerrard who said: “We’ve made a decision with Cameron Archer that he’ll be staying in the door. He will be part of the first team group and he needs to be ready when called upon to contribute to the team”

The Black Cats are one of a number of Championship outfits said to be keen on a swoop for the young centre-forward, with all of them now set to be gutted by this news.

Big blow for Alex Neil

This update on Archer’s situation will come as a big blow to the Sunderland head coach as it means that he will not be able to bring the talent to the Stadium of Light this summer.

The Scottish manager has confirmed that he wants up to five new signings over the next few weeks and another striker could be on the cards, as Ross Stewart and Ellis Simms are currently his only natural options in the number nine position.

In Archer, Sunderland could have landed a player capable of making a big impact for the club in the Championship after he caught the eye in the 2021/22 campaign.

The gem scored four goals in two EFL Cup matches and produced six goals and two assists in four EFL Trophy outings for Villa in the first half of the season. Preston then snapped him up on loan and he found the back of the net seven times in 18 Championship starts.

Last month, journalist Ryan Taylor praised the attacker and tipped him to remain at Villa Park, Tweeting: “Cameron Archer on target for Aston Villa in pre-season win at Walsall. Array of clubs prepared to wait to land him on loan later in window but don’t be surprised if he forces his way into reckoning at AVFC. Goal machine. Him & Joe Gelhardt are my ones to watch this season.”

This suggests that he has made his mark in pre-season by carrying his form over from last term, which shows that he is developing as a player as Gerrard has now deemed that he has improved enough to make the squad.

Therefore, this is a blow for Neil as Archer’s goalscoring record – especially in the Championship – suggests that he would have been a fantastic signing, particularly when you consider that Stewart and Simms have zero goals in the division between them in their respective careers.

Everton register interest in Gallagher

Everton have been heavily linked with a move for Conor Gallagher this summer, and now a new update has emerged on the club’s progress in making the signing before the transfer window shuts.

What’s the latest?

According to Football Insider, Everton have registered their interest in the Chelsea midfielder to sign him this summer.

As per the report, Frank Lampard is a huge admirer of the youngster and has made him a top priority transfer for Everton as he is looking for an energetic and dynamic midfielder to add to his team before the beginning of next season.

The Toffees have even contacted Chelsea to make them aware of their interest.

Lampard needs him badly

Considering the relegation scrap that Everton found themselves in last season in the Premier League you would have thought that there would have been more signings made at this point, alas only one new addition has been confirmed so far with James Tarkowski making the move to Merseyside.

There is no doubt that Lampard needs Gallagher in his team, not only can the young Chelsea talent make a huge impact from the centre of the pitch but with Fabian Delph and Donny van de Beek departing there is certainly room to bolster the midfield options ahead of next season.

Gallagher has been capturing the attention of the football world following his impressive season-long loan spell at Crystal Palace, with the 22-year-old quickly proving that he has the potential to be a star.

Over 34 Premier League appearances, Gallagher scored eight goals, delivered three assists and created five big chances. He also made 1.1 key passes and two tackles per game, as well as successfully completing the majority of his dribble attempts (57%).

Gallagher’s quality and impression on Palace also led the player to win Young Player of the Year at the London Football Awards and he earned his senior England debut in the World Cup qualifiers following his contributions at Selhurst Park.

The £50m-valued midfielder was hailed a “joy to watch” by Graeme Souness, with the legendary former Liverpool captain claiming:

“He’s a super talent. He plays with an honesty and freedom that every 21-year-old should and doesn’t. He’s obviously a very talented boy. He’s a joy to watch.”

With that being said, it is no wonder Lampard wants to reunite with his former Chelsea player this summer via Goodison Park as Gallagher can offer exactly what Everton need in order to get off to a good start when they return to action next month. Kevin Thelwell simply has to bring him to Merseyside if the chance arises.

Newcastle have discussed Calvert-Lewin deal

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their pursuit of Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Sky Sports reporter Pete Graves has revealed that PIF have held talks over a potential swoop for the Everton attacker, who is one of a number of players who they are currently eyeing.

He Tweeted: “Latest: Moussa Diaby IS on NUFC radar. That’s as far as things are at the moment. They have an extensive list of attacking targets. Still no movement on Ekitike which remains ‘dormant’ currently. Broja and Calvert-Lewin also discussed.”

The Mirror recently reported that the Magpies have been quoted a price of £60m for the England international and will look to negotiate a lower fee.

Imagine him & Allan Saint-Maximin

If Newcastle can secure a deal to sign Calvert-Lewin, the Toffees striker could form a brilliant partnership with Allan Saint-Maximin.

He can thrive off of the Frenchman’s crosses and passes and be the focal point for Eddie Howe at the top end of the pitch as he is a well-rounded number nine.

Former Manchester City forward Shaun Goater dubbed his skillset “unique” and Richarlison – now of Tottenham – claimed that he has a leap like “Cristiano Ronaldo”.

Calvert-Lewin certainly leaps like a salmon in the air to get on the end of crosses and this is reflected in his impressive Premier League scoring record with his head. He has found the back of the net 19 times with headers in the top-flight, along with 25 with his feet – showing that he is a versatile finisher.

In the league last season, Saint-Maximin created seven ‘big chances’ and provided 1.4 key passes per game for the Magpies. This came after he created six ‘big chances’ and managed 1.2 key passes per match in the 2020/21 campaign.

The French attacker has the ability to deliver chances to his teammates on a regular basis and this means that he can supply Calvert-Lewin with a constant supply of opportunities to score from.

Between the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons, the Englishman plundered a whopping 29 Premier League goals and has proven that he has the quality to find the back of the net consistently at this level.

This suggests that he will be able to make the most of Saint-Maximin’s creativity and that is why they would be a superb pair to watch playing alongside each other for the Toon next term.

Edwards reveals Newcastle transfer news

Luke Edwards has now revealed some exciting transfer news from Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Busy transfer window

It looks set to be another busy transfer window at St James’ Park after their splurge in January, having already signed Matt Targett on a permanent deal from Aston Villa.

The Magpies have recently been linked with the likes of Alphonse Areola, Matheus Nunes and Jules Kounde, which suggesting that they are looking to strengthen in all areas of the pitch.

The Latest: Edwards transfer update

Taking to Twitter, Edwards has revealed that Newcastle now ‘want’ to sign as many as five new players this summer, and also listed the positions that they have identified as ‘priorities’.

The Daily Telegraph journalist stated: “#nufc want 4 or 5 new players this summer. A wide forward, a CB and a striker are priorities. Will then look at other positions.”

The Verdict: Exciting

It is certainly exciting that the Tynesiders could bring in as many as five new players this summer, having already secured a permanent deal for Targett.

They have already been linked with some big names, and coupled with the January arrivals, they look set to form a very strong squad for Eddie Howe once the 2022/23 season begins.

Nonetheless, they just need to go about their business assuredly and not be bullied into paying premium prices by other clubs who know that they have the money to spend.

Talks are ongoing over Sven Botman and Hugo Ekitike, two players who fit the aforementioned priority positions, so they could well be the next ones to come through the doors at St James’ Park.

Aston Villa can axe Sanson for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Steven Gerrard appears to have made a head start for next season already by securing some excellent players ahead of what promises to be a busy summer transfer window for Aston Villa.

With the signings of Philippe Coutinho, Boubacar Kamara, and Diego Carlos, the 42-year-old has assembled a pretty solid spine for his new-look team as he aims to get Villa into the European places next year.

There will surely be some outgoings too, with the manager keen to free up some of the wage budget and make room for other new arrivals.

One player who surely needs to leave the club is Morgan Sanson, who hasn’t quite made an impression on Gerrard.

Sanson has flopped at Villa

Since arriving at Villa Park in January 2021 for an initial £14m, the Frenchman hasn’t set the world alight and could be set for a quick exit out of the Premier League.

The midfielder has had a “frustrating” time in England, in the words of former Villa boss Dean Smith, and he only made ten appearances in the most recent top-flight campaign.

If Gerrard can recoup the majority of the fee that Villa spent on the 27-year-old, then he should be looking to sign Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as a replacement.

James Pearce has stated that the Reds could be open to offers of around £10m for the 28-year-old, and this could be a bargain for Villa.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been dubbed “unreal” in the past by journalist Joel Rabinowitz, and although he only played 29 matches in all competitions during 2021/22, he still contributed more than Sanson at Villa.

The Englishman netted twice and registered one assist in the league, compared to the French flop, who didn’t contribute to a single goal for Villa in the most recent campaign.

Oxlade-Chamberlain offers a greater attacking threat, generating 21 shot-creating actions (2.41 per 90) compared to Sanson’s three (0.76 per 90)

Defensively, the 28-year-old was also by far the better player this season, winning more tackles (14 to eight) and recording more pressures (172 to 135) than Sanson.

These statistics clearly show that Gerrard could get a major upgrade on the Frenchman with a move for Oxlade-Chamberlain, and at £10m, it could well be a gamble worth taking.

Arsenal suffer big blow ahead of Everton

Arsenal have been dealt a major injury blow ahead of their final game of the Premier League campaign against Everton today.

What’s the latest?

As per a report from Evening Standard, Arteta’s side are likely to be without Takehiro Tomiyasu, with the Japan international forced off in the 39th minute of the Gunners’ uninspiring defeat to Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United on Monday night.

Tomiyasu’s muscular injury is the latest in what has been a considerable amount of problems for Arsenal in the business end of the campaign, with the likes of Kieran Tierney and Thomas Partey also out for the season.

As such, Cedric Soares is expected to fill in at right-back in the Japan international’s absence.

A big blow for Arteta

The latest injury at Arsenal represents a big setback for both Arteta and Tomiyasu, with the latter having endured an injury-ridden first season in the Premier League.

When he has played, the 23-year-old has been a defensive rock for the Gunners.

Boasting an average of 0.20 defensive actions that led to a shot attempt, his ability to turn over possession quickly has enabled Arsenal to hit on the break on numerous occasions. Though, it’s his defensive participation average of 1.26 interceptions and 0.91 passes blocked that Arteta will miss the most, in what is an integral game if they are to achieve their top-four ambitions.

In the Arsenal squad, Tomiyasu ranks joint first for his 1.3 interceptions per 90 and boosts the Gunners’ attacking threat with his average of 4.00 passes into the final third.

His offensive acumen would have been felt by Lampard’s side, who boasts the fourth worst defence in the league, having conceded 61 goals this season.

The blow to Tomiyasu is another frustrating setback, with the Japanese defender having already missed nine games with a calf injury earlier this season.

Past perfect makes West Indies' present tense

West Indies can call on some great memories at Edgbaston but they will start as underdogs against an England side on the up

George Dobell16-Aug-20172:14

‘Pink-ball cricket is not new to us’ – Holder

It was here at Edgbaston, in 1984, that England were exposed to West Indies at their best. Here where Andy Lloyd, a local favourite and England’s top-scorer in two of the three ODIs that preceded the series, saw his Test career ended less than an hour after it started as he was struck a horrible blow just above the right eye by a Malcolm Marshall delivery. Here where England, stunned by the ferocity of an attack that also included Michael Holding and Joel Garner, succumbed to defeat by an innings and 180 runs. The decisive first blow in the “blackwash” series that ended 5-0.Maybe Test cricket has featured better sides, more fearsome bowlers and a stronger top order – Gordon Greenidge, Des Haynes and Viv Richards in the top four pretty much amounted to bullying – but it is not immediately obvious when. The word “awesome” is overused, but it seems apt to describe West Indies. England felt their full force that summer.Times have changed. This West Indies side is placed at No. 8 in the Test rankings and has not won an away series against opposition apart from Bangladesh or Zimbabwe this century. They have won three away Tests (with the same caveat) in that period. They didn’t quality for the Champions Trophy and they almost certainly won’t qualify automatically for the World Cup. So much have expectations fallen that their captain, Jason Holder, described a year which has featured two defeats and one victory as “pretty decent.”Holder wasn’t dealt a handful of aces when he inherited the captaincy of this side. Gone are the days when West Indies had so many options they could leave out players of the class of Sylvester Clarke (who played 11 Tests), Ezra Moseley (who played two), Collis King (nine) or many, many more. All would be viewed as exceptional if they played today. All would be millionaires.Holder also inherited a poisonous relationship between board and players and a jaded relationship between players and supporters. All too often he has been left to answer questions about board policy or selection about which he had no input. All too often he has been asked to explain a decline which he, as much as anyone, wants to reverse. All too often he has been the one left to lead a team against impossible odds. And every time he has responded with patience, diplomacy and gentle courtesy and good humour.

“We’re fortunate to have an experienced seam attack in Jimmy and Broady. It might be that plans change if the ball goes soft, or the wicket is flat. But they have a huge amount of experience to call on”Joe Root

They are, arguably, a team in his image. With his height – his top of his head practically brushes the floodlights at Edgbaston – he does evoke memories of the tall fast bowlers of the past. But his pace is frustratingly below that of his forebears and his team, while talented, lack both the genius and experience of those that went before. For that and other reasons, his era of captaincy won’t be remembered like Clive Lloyd’s. But, one day, lovers of Caribbean cricket might come to look back with gratitude at the role he played in guiding the team through some of the choppiest waters in their history. It used to be argued that anyone could lead that side of 1984 to success; it might equally be argued that nobody can do the same with this one.Things are improving. The new CEO, Johnny Grave, has taken a bit of toxicity out of the environment. With a combination of the “amnesty” offered to players and the introduction of white-ball contracts in a few weeks’ time, some of the better known players will once again be made available for West Indies. How much difference that will make to the Test side remains unclear, but it should improve both their limited-overs performances and their reputation in the eyes of the team’s supporters.Does all this offer hope of a return to the great days of the past? Not really. That’s not realistic. But it offers hope of improvement. Because as the success of West Indies sides in the men and women’s World T20 and the U-19 World Cup remind us, there is still talent in the Caribbean. With better management, with better incentives, with better structures there is realistic hope of better times ahead. They are, as Holder admits, “huge underdogs” in this series. But they have a chance. If their seamers can harness the new, pink ball and if their batsmen – which is more of a worry – can withstand England’s attack, they can exploit an opposition that is talented but has holes in the XI. It should not be forgotten that England lost the last Test between these sides, albeit on a turning wicket in Barbados.”We have to make life as uncomfortable as possible for their senior players and put some pressure on the junior guys who are coming in,” Holder said. It sounds a decent plan. Both Holder and the team’s coach, Stuart Law, have mentioned their confidence in the bowlers’ ability to generate lateral movement with the old pink ball. If so, this could offer some advantage. England will be seeking reverse swing but, once the shine has worn off – by around 20 overs – and outside the twilight period, this could prove an attritional format of the game.Joe Root and Jason Holder pose with the Investec series trophy and the Wisden Trophy•Getty ImagesJoe Root feels that playing in such conditions is one of England’s strengths. And it is true that, in Stuart Broad and James Anderson, he has a pair of bowlers as well-equipped to bowl dry as any. An inexperienced West Indies batting line-up will be tested mentally as much as technically if the runs evaporate.”We’re very fortunate to have quite an experienced seam attack, especially in Jimmy and Broady,” Root said. “They have had a lot of success playing attritional cricket, whether it be in the sub-continent or out in the West Indies on those wickets that don’t necessarily offer a lot.”It might be that certain plans change if the ball does go soft, or the wicket is flat. But they have a huge amount of experience to call on.”The England line-up is also green. With three men in the top five boasting four caps and one half-century between them, there is a fragility that the likes of Shannon Gabriel and Kemar Roach can target. If they are going to have any hope of winning the Ashes, England really need at least two of Mark Stoneman, Dawid Malan and Tom Westley to use this series to find their feet in Test cricket. There might have been a temptation to omit Malan here. Had they done so, England could have included a second spinner in Mason Crane and perhaps substituted Toby Roland-Jones for Chris Woakes to rebalance the batting. But they were concerned that Woakes had not had enough cricket since returning from a significant injury and felt that Roland-Jones deserved another opportunity. They also believe there will be little assistance for spin bowlers.Root feels the secret of success in such conditions will be an ability to adapt. While the England team has, at times of late, seemed to only have a fifth gear, he will continue to instil a more controlled approach to ensure that, if the ball starts moving during the twilight period, they do not continue to bat as if the sun is blazing.”We’ve got to make sure that when the difficult periods crop up, we respond well and we respond quickly,” Root said. “Of course we want our team to be settled. You never want to go into a series with guys out of form or under pressure. But this is a great opportunity for players to cement their places.”It may also prove to be West Indies’ disadvantage that they come across England at a full-house Edgbaston. The novelty of the day-night scheduling has caught the public imagination and will mean that, for the first three days at least, England receive unstinting support. It will allow no room for complacency and might even make life a little intimidating for the opposition.A West Indies’ team intimidated at Edgbaston? It would have been unthinkable not so long ago. But times have changed and with England now led by a young, hungry man with points to prove and a reputation to establish, there is no doubt the hosts are the strong favourites for this series.
