What's in a dead-rubber for despondent West Indies?

Big Picture

In a cruel scheduling twist, what should be a despondent West Indies team has been kept waiting for five days, through the Diwali festivities, for a dead T20 rubber after having won only one of their nine international matches on the tour. Life left them when they admittedly spent themselves leveling one and winning another ODI in the middle of the tour. A bunch of hidings followed. It is difficult not to have your mind on the flight back home at such times. The talk when the limited-overs leg of the tour began and now even is around those who are not here. Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Lendl Simmons. There is also fear that Shmiron Hetmyer and Shai Hope – the two shining lights of the ODI series – might not be making a similar trip, say next year, if they keep doing so well and get picked up by T20 leagues. With the IPL auction a month or so away, die-hard fans of the team from the Caribbean will be hoping neither of them scores a hundred or such like. How will they, though? Made to bat out of position in T20s because there are no openers making this trip, even Hope and Hetmyer seem like they have been left with too much to do.The series won, India have rested key bowlers with the Australia tour on their minds. So pardon us if the build-up to this T20 international, the final match of the tour, is not hysterical.Once the coin goes up, though, the intensity will too. The thing with Indian grounds is, there are so many that each ground is lucky if it gets one international match a year. This is Chennai’s first in about 14 months. Expect another big crowd even though their beloved MS Dhoni is not part of the Indian side.

In the spotlight

It’s not often that Shikhar Dhawan goes through such a long stint – especially against an opposition not at its best – without a big score. Five ODIs and two T20Is have gone by, and he doesn’t even have a single half-century. In the T20Is, he has looked scratchy. Oshane Thiomas has bowled him three times in the limited-overs leg of the tour. This is Dhawan’s chance to get a big innings in.Hope and Hetmyer. Not that they weren’t seen as the future before the tour – Hope especially was – but they have shown that they have the game for slower surfaces too. Hetmyer in particular has been good at hitting spinners. Indian audiences have enjoyed watching them, and they will like to leave the country with a final reminder of their abilities.

Team news

India have rested Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav and Umesh Yadav. This could bring a chance for Washington Sundar at his home ground. It will be interesting to see if they give Shreyas Iyer a chance now that the series is sealed.India (possible): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt.), 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 KL Rahul, 4 Manish Pandey, 5 Rishabh Pant, 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 Yuzvendra Chahal, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Washington Sundar, 11 Khaleel AhmedWest Indies played two wicketkeepers in the last game. Given Denesh Ramdin’s form, they could bring back allrounder Rovman Powell and give Nicholas Pooran the gloves.West Indies (possible): 1 Shai Hope, Nicholas Pooran (wk), 3 Shimron Hetmyer, 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Carlos Brathwaite (capt.), 7 Rovman Powell, 8 Keemo Paul, 9 Fabian Allen, 10 Khary Pierre, 11 Oshane Thomas

Pitch and conditions

The Chennai pitch usually helps spin, but you never can tell with the dew around.

Stats and trivia

  • West Indies’ win-loss ratio of 0.959 in Twenty20 internationals (47 wins and 49 losses) is the 10th-best in the world. However, they have won two World T20s, and continue to feed some of the best players of the format to leagues around the globe. A sign of the relevance of Twenty20 internationals outside the World Cups?
  • This is only the second T20 international in Chennai. Six years ago, New Zealand beat India by one run here. Rohit Sharma was India’s No. 6 batsman back then.

Quotes

“When you look at our World T20 players, they’re in demand all over the world, so yes, we’re suffering in that aspect. Our senior players did not turn up for the tour, and that’s one of the reasons why we’re 2-0 down in this series.”

Celtic’s “incredible to watch” star set for weeks on sidelines with injury

Celtic have been dealt a blow after learning that one of their first-team players has been ruled out of action for several weeks through injury, following a fresh update.

Celtic injury news

At Parkhead, Brendan Rodgers has Liel Abada, Stephen Welsh, Marco Tilio and Maik Nawrocki all out on the sidelines with their own respective problems, but they are about to be joined in the treatment room by another one of their teammates north of the border.

The Hoops secured a respectable 2-2 draw against Atletico Madrid on home soil in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, but despite the positive result, there was, unfortunately for the boss, a negative to occur on the night with regards to a squad member having to leave the field earlier than expected.

The Scottish Premiership side’s central midfielder, Reo Hatate, was named in the starting line-up for the midweek encounter under the lights, but was forced off the pitch and replaced by Paulo Bernardo after just seven minutes due to a suspected hamstring injury, which caused immediate concern among staff and supporters alike.

Reo Hatate ruled out through injury

Speaking during his pre-match press conference on Friday, Rodgers confirmed that Celtic’s Reo Hatate won’t be available for several weeks.

As quoted by Sky Sports, he said: "We don't have a definitive timeline but he will definitely be out for a few weeks. We are just waiting for it to settle down and waiting for the result and we will see where he's at but it looked quite a bad one.

"If you watch the game, the first 35 seconds he has over-stretched and he has felt it early on. It's such a shame for him. It's a different one. He was out with his hamstring last year, it's his other one this time. So we just need to try to get to the bottom of that."

Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate.

As per journalist Josh Bunting, Hatate is “incredible to watch” at Celtic, so the fact that he’s set to be out of action for an extended amount of time will come as a huge blow to Rodgers, who won’t have the 25-year-old at his disposal for the foreseeable future.

The Japan international has racked up 31 involvements, 16 assists and 15 goals, in 76 appearances during his time in Glasgow, highlighting how prolific he can be in the final third (Transfermarkt – Hatate statistics), and there’s no doubt that he’s helped to play a huge part in the club’s success in recent seasons.

The Bhoys star has secured four trophies since putting pen to paper in January 2022, including winning the likes of the Scottish Premiership and the League Cup, so he is an integral member of the squad and one whose absence will be missed on the field.

Furthermore, Hatate is a versatile operator having been deployed in eight different positions over the pitch since the start of his career, including two roles in defence, everywhere across the midfield and even out wide as a left-winger, so the manager will be hoping to have his talisman back as soon as possible.

Everton: Dyche must now bench £1.7m-rated flop immediately

Everton have endured a torrid start to their new campaign, with their only win coming against League Two Doncaster Rovers in the EFL Cup. Whilst few have emerged with any plaudits, there have instead been numerous duds who continue to disappoint, feeding into this awful run of form.

One such name is Ashley Young, who was enlisted in the summer to help pad out the squad. Many were content with the free acquisition of the former Aston Villa man, with his experience at the top level certain to aid in the dressing room.

How is Ashley Young playing?

Few likely expected that the 38-year-old would become such an integral figure, having started all five of their Premier League fixtures, of which they have only captured a single point.

Although his quality clearly still remains in flashes, there have been a few questionable moments that have left a few people scratching their heads.

As such, his 6.66 average Sofascore rating is about as disappointing as one would expect, largely bogged down by his dreadful return to Villa Park. One moment, where his crossfield throw set up their opposition, drew particular scorn from co-commentator Andy Hinchcliffe: "The throw-in from Ashley Young is diabolical. It’s just appalling. There’s no other word for it. Disgraceful defending. How do you recover from this?"

Not to mention that his wayward set pieces have come under scrutiny too, as his floated deliveries are almost always gobbled up by delighted goalkeepers. For a player celebrated for his quality in this area of the game, it is hugely disappointing.

Expectations were hardly sky-high for this ageing stalwart, but his continued failure in the starting side means surely Sean Dyche must act.

Who could replace Ashley Young?

Although he has been ever-present, this has largely been to fill in gaps in the full-back spots. When Vitaliy Mykolenko was pushing for a return to fitness, the Englishman slotted into left-back, before moving to right-back as Nathan Patterson dropped to the bench against Arsenal.

It seems that the former Burnley boss is more confident trusting the experience of Young over the youthful energy these two alternative defenders could bring, but at this point, he may have no other choice.

nathan-patterson-everton-sean-dyche-premier-league-james-garner-england

He surely cannot persist with something that is clearly not working, whilst the £1.7m-rated ace would still retain his impact within the dressing room anyway were he to move to the bench.

After all, the Scotsman and the Ukrainian internationals have posted 6.90 and 6.80 average Sofascore ratings respectively for their starts to the season, which suggest they boast far more solidity than Young has done. Vitally, Patterson bettered Young in the tackling department last term, while Mykolenko made more clearances per game. Perhaps they could offer a greater deal of solidity on that evidence.

At 24 and 21 years old, they are also the future of this football club, for all their flaws. Surely Dyche is better served trusting in youth whilst they are not completely entrenched in a relegation battle, before calling on the know-how of the one-time Premier League winner later in the campaign should he be required.

Young marks an exceptional squad player to acquire for free, but if he is to continue as a starter it will only exacerbate their issues. How Farhad Moshiri has allowed the quality of the squad to get this low is remarkable, and although the potential buyers have their downsides too, fans will likely just be so glad to see the back of the Iranian billionaire.

Ranking the 10 worst injuries in the Premier League era

An lengthy injury is something everyone in football dreads. Whether that is the player themselves, their manager or the fans. However, it is, unfortunately, part and parcel of the game and we see injuries picked up on a regular basis.

The majority of injuries only have a short-term effect on the team with a matter of weeks usually needed to see the player recover and return to the side.

However, there are some occasions when this is not the case and, in fact, the player can find themselves out for months and sometimes even over a year.

Indeed, over the Premier League era, there has been some horrific injuries which have not only been gruesome to witness from the stands, but also caused lengthy setbacks for the player who has been forced to undergo long periods of intense rehabilitation before being able to step back onto the pitch.

With 30 years of the Premier League now in the history books, we at Football FanCast have taken a look into the ten worst injuries over the course of the English top flight – as we know it today.

10 Ryan Mason – Fractured skull

Tottenham's Ryan Mason

Going back to 2017, Ryan Mason had moved on from his boyhood club, Tottenham Hotspur, and was playing for Hull City. However, on a return to the capital, the midfielder played what proved to be his final game of football at the age of just 26.

Indeed, Mason was facing one of Tottenham's London rivals, Chelsea, and as a corner came swinging into the box, Mason and Gary Cahill collided heads as they both battled for the ball.

Mason stayed down following the clash of heads – for eight minutes of on-field treatment -and was forced off on a stretcher with the severity of his injury to emerge following his trip to the hospital.

After his trip to the hospital, it became apparent Mason had suffered a fractured skull which saw the Englishman spend eight days in the hospital where he had to undergo surgery as 14 metal plates and 28 screws were bolted onto his skull to help his recovery.

Ultimately, Mason was forced to retire and has since gone on to kickstart his managerial career with interim spells as the Spurs boss.

9 Peter Cech – Fractured skull

Peter Cech dons his protective head guard for Chelsea.

Similarly to Mason, the former Chelsea goalkeeper, Petr Cech, suffered a horrendous head injury back in 2006 against Reading.

Cech's career has gone down in Premier League history with the Czech Republic shot-stopper having won five FA Cups, four Premier League titles, the Champions League and the Europa League.

However, his career could have been ended a lot sooner than when he retired back in 2019.

After Stephen Hunt collided with Cech's head in the opening seconds of the game, the goalkeeper was rushed to hospital to undergo emergency surgery to have metal plates inserted into his head.

Although Cech was able to continue his career, he was forced to wear – the infamous – protective head guard for the remainder of his playing days.

8 David Busst – Broken leg

David Busst Coventry City.

Playing for Coventry City against Manchester United in 1996, David Busst took to the field for what proved to be the final time in his career.

After a crunching clash between Busst, Denis Irwin and Brian McClair, the game was halted for a whopping nine minutes as the Coventry ace received treatment.

The injury was so severe that the double fracture to his right leg saw the United goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel, wiping blood off the pitch following his exit from the game.

Amid the threat of amputation, Busst had to undergo 22 surgeries following the injury in 1996 and was advised by medical professionals to hang up his boots.

7 Luc Nilis – Broken leg

Luc Nilis Aston Villa.

Aston Villa forward Luc Nilis was only three games into his career at Villa Park when he clashed with the opposition goalkeeper.

The striker broke his leg and was forced to undergo surgery twice in the space of the first four days following the injury.

However, despite reports from his surgeons suggesting that his recovery was going well, Nilis decided not to return to the game and that clash in 2000 proved to be his final time taking to the pitch.

6 Eduardo Da Silva – Broken leg

Eduardo Da Silva Arsenal.

Rolling it back to 2018, Arsenal's Eduardo Da Silva suffered one of the most gruesome broken legs the Premier League has seen.

Playing away to Birmingham City, Eduardo suffered a severe leg break after a shocking challenge from Martin Taylor which saw the Brazilian's bone poking out his sock.

It was immediately clear just how bad this injury was with the likes of Cesc Fabregas visibly upset after witnessing the incident.

And it is fair to say the striker was never the same after the injury as he returned to action over one year later before being sold to Shakhtar Donetsk.

Club physio – at the time – Gary Lewis said: "I'll never forget it. It's probably the worst injury I've ever seen and when you see something that bad it really sticks in your memory.

"When I went on the pitch I noticed his ankle was dislocated and in the wrong shape. I also saw the bone sticking out of his sock, so I knew it was an open fracture.

5 Aaron Ramsey – Broken leg

jack-wilshere-aaron-ramsey-arsenal

Sticking with the Gunners, Welshman Aaron Ramsey suffered a similarly horrific injury just a matter of years on from Eduardo, in 2010.

Arsene Wenger's Arsenal were playing away to Stoke City, this time, and Ramsey fell victim to a horro challenge from the Potters' centre-back Ryan Shawcross.

The Englishman was instantly shown a red card for the challenge which snapped both the tibia and fibula of Ramsey.

Despite the severity of the injury, Ramsey was able to return to action later on in the year, however, this was just the start of what has been an injury-riddled career for the midfielder.

"I heard the crack of Ramsey’s leg from the bench," former Stoke forward Dave Kitson told The Sun.

"I heard the screaming. And the build-up to the game contributed to this moment.

4 Djibril Cisse – Broken leg

Djibril Cisse Liverpool

This was another leg break which was instantly clear of just how bad the injury actually was.

Back in 2004, Liverpool took on Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League, but the game was overshadowed by one of the worst leg breaks in the history of the league.

Indeed, with the French forward's foot planted into the turf, a challenge from Jay McEveley saw Cisse's leg break instantly.

The injury was so severe it snapped both his tibia and fibula and the eccentric Frenchman has since claimed had it not have been for the work of the Liverpool medical team he could have even lost his leg.

3 Gary Mabbutt – Fractured skull

Almost going all the way back to the conception of the Premier League – as we know it today – the Spurs defender also suffered a horrendous fractured skull.

Coming up against Wimbledon, John Fashanu was the man to deal the blow to Mabbutt who had to undergo surgery as a result.

No action was taken against Fash the Bash on the day, however, the injury was so severe it is believed to have nearly cost Mabbutt both his career and his eye.

2 Raul Jimenez – Fractured skull

raul-jimenez-wolves

There is an ongoing theme in this list and fractured skulls are becoming a common injury.

However, the case of Raul Jimenez is truly one of the worst injuries which the league has ever seen.

The Mexican striker was enjoying life in the English top flight and had proven himself to be a real threat up top at Molineux. But what was to follow in a game against Arsenal would bring all of that to halt.

Indeed, after a clash of heads from a Wolves corner, Jimenez suffered a fractured skull and had to undergo emergency surgery.

Once a reliable outlet of goals in the Premier League, Jimenez has never looked the same since his return to the game.

1 Pedro Mendes – Knocked out

Pedro Mendes Tottenham Hotspur.

In a list which has been filled with fractured skulls and broken legs, we will bring it to an end with something slightly different.

There is certainly an argument for more severe leg breaks which have been missed off this list with the likes of Hatem Ben Arfa and Andre Gomes.

However, there was a great deal of brutality surrounding this incident which involved Portsmouth's Pedro Mendes and Ben Thatcher.

Having played a pass, Mendes' face was caught with a purposeful elbow from the Manchester City star. The elbow sent Mendes hurtling into the advertising boards and left him unconscious.

But the injury did not end there as the Portuguese midfielder was driven to hospital, he suffered a seizure.

Mendes did make a full recovery from the incident, however, it could have certainly been much worse.

Sunderland: Mowbray Can Land Dream Stansfield Alternative For £2.5m

Sunderland were dealt a blow in their pursuit of a new centre-forward option this week as one of their reported transfer targets moved to another Championship club.

What's the latest Sunderland transfer news?

The Sunderland Echo had claimed that the Black Cats held talks with Premier League outfit Fulham over a possible loan deal for 20-year-old marksman Jay Stansfield, who spent last season on loan at Exeter.

However, Tony Mowbray and Kristjaan Speakman were unable to get a deal over the line for the talented youngster as Birmingham City officially announced his arrival on loan on Thursday.

The club could quickly get over that disappointment, though, as they are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Ukrainian striker Nazariy Rusyn from Zorya Lugansk, who is said to be set to put pen to paper on a four-year contract at the Stadium of Light.

How good is Nazariy Rusyn?

Mowbray could be on the verge of securing a dream alternative to Stansfield by bringing the 24-year-old marksman to Wearside after his impressive performances throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

Rusyn enjoyed a terrific season with Zorya and proved himself to be capable of scoring and assisting goals from a number nine position, which could make him a fantastic addition to the squad for Sunderland.

The exciting whiz, who is reportedly valued at £2.5m by the Black Cats, racked up 13 goals and six assists in 30 Premier Liga outings last term, which means that he was directly involved in a goal every 1.88 matches on average.

Stansfield, on the other hand, produced nine goals and seven assists in 38 League One games for Exeter last season, which is an average of one goal contribution every 2.36 clashes.

Fulham striker Jay Stansfield.

These statistics show that Rusyn provided more quality at the top end of the pitch for his respective club due to his ability to score and assist goals more frequently than the 20-year-old talent.

Neither player is a proven Championship performer and this means that there would have been a risk, in terms of their adaptation to playing at this level.

Still, the Ukraine U21 international's record suggests that the potential is there for him to be an excellent player for Mowbray if he can adapt to life in England.

Rusyn, who has scored one goal in two league games this season, could be an outstanding performer for the English head coach if he can replicate his Zorya performances for Sunderland.

Last term, no current Black Cats player managed more than ten Championship goals and no striker produced more than three league assists.

This suggests that Rusyn, with his 13 goals and six assists during the 2022/23 campaign, has the scope to be a superb option for the ex-Blackburn Rovers manager at the top end of the pitch. His ability to score and assist goals could improve Sunderland's attack and help them to push up the table this season.

Therefore, the £2.5m-rated finisher could be a dream alternative to Stansfield due to his superior record in front of goal last term and the fact that he would come in on a permanent deal rather than a loan, which means that the talented marksman has room to grow over the course of several years.

Fulham Have "Looked At" Signing "Fantastic" Reguilon

Fulham have now "looked at" signing Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon, but another player remains Marco Silva's priority target, according to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas.

Who are Fulham signing this summer?

Fulham have now reached an agreement to sign Leicester City full-back Timothy Castagne, in what could be a £15m deal, and the Belgian is set to join on a four-year contract, with the transfer set to be formally announced by the club on Tuesday.

However, The Evening Standard report the Cottagers ideally want to bring in two new full-backs, indicating they could also sign a left-back, and they have recently stepped up their interest in signing AS Monaco's Ismail Jakobs, according to a report from TEAMtalk.

Jakobs is said to be Marco Silva's top target in that area of the pitch, with discussions currently ongoing, and the manager is determined to win the race for his signature, but there are some alternative options in mind, including Reguilon,

In a recent update on X, Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas has claimed that Fulham are one of the Premier League clubs who have "looked at" signing the Tottenham left-back, but they may have to fend off interest from elsewhere, with Manchester United also interested.

In what could be a boost for both clubs, the Spaniard will be allowed to leave Spurs before the transfer deadline on September 1st, with Sky Sports reporting he is one of four defenders "expected to depart" the north London club.

The Cottagers' interest only appears to be tentative at this stage, and their priority is getting a deal for Castagne over the line, but given that Silva wants to bring in two new full-backs, the Tottenham defender could also be brought in before the deadline.

How good is Sergio Reguilon?

The "fantastic" 26-year-old had two full seasons as a first-team regular for Spurs, making a total of 67 appearances for the club, however he was unfancied by former manager Antonio Conte ahead of last season, being sent out on loan to La Liga side Atletico Madrid.

However, the £48k-per-week full-back was unable to make the impact he would have been hoping for in his home country, making 11 appearances in La Liga, and featuring for just 303 minutes in total, never managing to force his way into Diego Simeone's plans.

Given that he has received very little game time over the past year, and did not stand out during his time in the Tottenham starting XI, it may be unwise for Fulham to pursue a move for Reguilon, particularly considering they have some other good options in mind.

sergio-reguilon-real-madrid-tottenham-hotspur-emerson-transfer

Silva's priority target, Jakobs, has received far more game time for Monaco, making 32 Ligue 1 appearances last season, and he poses a real threat on the front foot, ranking in the 89th percentile for assists per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers.

There is a reason why Tottenham have no qualms about parting ways with Reguilon, and Fulham should avoid making a move for him this summer.
