Romano: Chelsea want £207k-p/w striker who’d be the finest since Drogba

Chelsea qualified for Europe last season, combatting the wretched nature of the previous campaign, but the forthcoming campaign in the Conference League is not where the Blues want to be.

With life under Enzo Maresca underway, Chelsea have shown ambition in the transfer market but have still yet to sign a centre-forward, one of the most pressing concerns after missing 73 big chances in the Premier League last term – Liverpool (79) are the only team to have missed more.

Chelsea lining up new striker

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update in the race for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who is pushing to leave the 2022/23 Serie A champions and is firmly on Chelsea's radar as they seek a new star at No. 9.

Chelsea are joined by Paris Saint-Germain in being the chief contenders for the Nigerian's signature, but with Antonio Conte's Napoli hoping to sign Romelu Lukaku, the Premier League side might hold the chips in the race.

Victor Osimhen is the gold standard

Say what you want about Todd Boehly, but you can't say that he's lacking in ambition. Chelsea have spent with a scattergun approach over the past few years, and while it's been polished, some of that lucrative enterprise would need to be harnessed if Osimhen is going to move to London.

Napoli star Victor Osimhen

There's no disguising the shambolic nature of Napoli's title defence last term, finishing tenth with 53 points. Osimhen played his part though, scoring 15 goals from 22 starts in the Italian top flight as he battled through injuries, unable to show the full scope of his skillset.

The year before, however, he was utterly breathtaking as I Partenopei won the Scudetto with imperious ease, posting 31 goals and five assists across 39 matches in all competitions.

With the least amount of league appearances on the above list of Europe's superlative shooters in 2022/23, Osimhen ranked among the top 1% of forwards in Serie A that year for goals scored per 90, as per FBref, with his rate of 0.91 goals per game something that would catapult Chelsea back to form.

He could even prove to be Stamford Bridge's finest striker since the halcyon days of Didier Drogba, who is widely regarded as one of the Premier League's finest attacking players, with 20,000 Blues fans voting the Ivory Coast legend as their best-ever player in 2012.

Admittedly, the competition is somewhat thin; Chelsea have been beset by something of a curse at No. 9 over the past decade, with the likes of Fernando Torres (£50m), Radamel Falcao, Alvaro Morata, Gonzalo Higuain, and Lukaku among the disappointing collection of high-profile strikers that have flattered to deceive.

Drogba endured no such problem, scoring 164 goals across 381 appearances and winning a wealth of silverware – including the Champions League and four Premier League trophies.

The £207k-per-week Osimhen, hailed for his "world-class" quality by none other than Jose Mourinho – architect of Drogba's success, by the way – could snap that curse and fire Chelsea back into the ascendancy. Boehly needs to get it done.

The Blues are looking for attacking upgrades this summer.

Arsenal want to sign £42m star who could be Arteta’s own Yamal

The Euros came to a rather climactic end on Sunday night, as Spain broke the hearts of England fans everywhere with a professional 2-1 victory, which saw the country pick up their fourth European crown.

There were several stand-out performers for La Roja on the night, be it Nico Williams for the opening goal or Mikel Oyarzabal for his late winner, but one who maybe deserves more credit than most is 17-year-old Lamine Yamal.

The teenager assisted the Spaniard's opener and looked at home on the biggest stage, ready for a career at the very top of the game.

So, it's good news for Arsenal fans then that the latest young star touted for a move to the Emirates this summer has won comparisons to the Barcelona ace and could become Mikel Arteta's answer to him.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Arsenal are one of several clubs heavily linked with Stade Rennais' exciting wonderkid, Desire Doue, who is expected to leave this summer.

Stade Rennais youngster Desire Doue

This corroborates the reports from France last week (via Get French Football News) that the Gunners had joined the race to land the youngster alongside Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and cross-city rivals Chelsea.

Unfortunately for the Premier League runners-up, those sides aren't their only competition for the 19-year-old's signature, as another report last week claimed that fellow North Londoners Tottenham Hotspur were also keen and that the asking price for the player is around €50m, which converts to about £42m.

Bringing Doue to the Emirates this summer could be challenging, but his performances last season and comparisons to Yamal mean this is a transfer Arsenal cannot afford to miss out on.

How Doue compares to Lamal

Now, before getting to Doue's impressive performances last season and explaining why they show he'd be an excellent addition to Arsenal, let's look at this comparison to Yamal.

It stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues to create a list of the top ten most comparable players for each one.

In this case, they concluded that the European champion is the most similar attacking midfielder or winger in the top five leagues to the Frenchman.

It is easier to understand how they came to this conclusion when looking at how closely the pair rank for multiple key metrics, such as non-penalty goals, assists, shots on target, key and live passes, through balls, goal-creating actions, and interceptions, all per 90.

However, it's not just the similarity to the Barcelona gem that makes the French "entertainer," as data analyst Ben Mattinson dubbed him, such an exciting prospect.

Despite being just 18 years old at the start of last season, the Angers-born gem scored four goals and provided six assists in 42 senior games.

He also started games on both wings as well as in attacking, central and wide midfield roles, showing that positional versatility is just another string to his bow.

Arsenal now a frontrunner to sign £84m star who'd make Odegaard unplayable

Ultimately, while there is always some risk in signing a player so young, the fact that he is attracting attention from the biggest clubs in the world at the moment, enjoyed a stellar season last year, and has been compared to Yamal should be reasons enough for Edu Gaspar and Co to take that risk and bring him to N5.

Man Utd want to sign "magnificent" £34m Euro 2024 star ahead of Liverpool

Manchester United have reportedly become the latest club to eye a move to sign a Euro 2024 star who looks destined for a big move after the tournament this summer.

Man Utd transfer news

With Erik ten Hag set to take charge of a crucial third season at Old Trafford despite initial doubts over his job security, Manchester United have turned their attention to handing the Dutchman some much-needed reinforcements.

ByTom Lever Jun 22, 2024

The likes of Joshua Zirkzee, Jarrad Branthwaite and West Ham United's Edson Alvarez have all been linked with moves to the Premier League giants this summer, as the Red Devils look to make an instant return to the top four, starting with their opening day clash against at home against Fulham.

By that point, Ten Hag will hope to have a number of fresh faces to work with, especially within his backline following the departure of Raphael Varane and the potential exit of Victor Lindelof this summer, which could see one particular Euro 2024 star arrive.

According to Calcio Mercato, Manchester United are now eyeing a move to sign Riccardo Calafiori over the likes of Liverpool, Newcastle United and Juventus this summer. The Italian is a man in demand and not even his unfortunate own goal against Spain has brought the rumours over his future to a crashing halt.

A summer deal, as things stand, could quickly look like a bargain too, with Bologna reportedly demanding just €40m (£34m) to sell their central defender in the coming months. Still just 22 years old, there's plenty more to come from Calafiori, who is already stealing the headlines for all the right reasons in both Serie A and at Euro 2024 in Germany.

"Magnificent" Calafiori could be the future of Man Utd defence

With Varane gone, Lindelof's future in doubt, Harry Maguire now 31 years old and Lisandro Martinez facing consistent injury problems, Manchester United are in desperate need of a player to take hold of their backline for years to come. And that's where Calafiori would help in abundance.

The 22-year-old is proving that he can perform on the big stage at Euro 2024 and is bound to only get better, making him a player United should do everything to avoid missing out on this summer. Described as "magnificent" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, Calafiori seems destined for the top.

Given just how many top clubs are reportedly interested in the Italian too, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Manchester United would be making quite the statement by signing Calafiori fresh from the Euros and heading into the Premier League season this summer.

Alana King, Nat Sciver power Melbourne Stars to maiden WBBL final

Scorchers could not recover sufficiently from King’s strikes to post a target large enough to test the Stars

Andrew McGlashan25-Nov-2020The Melbourne Stars put in a performance worthy of their table-topping status to book a place in the WBBL final. Legspinner Alana King continued her outstanding tournament with three scalps, including the imposing opening duo of Sophie Devine and Beth Mooney, from which the Perth Scorchers could not recover sufficiently to post a target large enough to test the Stars.Having been put in to bat, the Scorchers struggled to impose themselves on the match and the first half of their innings included just a single boundary. Nicole Bolton managed to haul them over 120, but Meg Lanning was rarely under pressure as the fielding captain.Briefly, when Devine struck her first delivery there was the possibility that the extra pressure of a semi-final could come into play and make the target more daunting than it really was. However, there was a crispness and confidence about the strokeplay even when they shipped three wickets inside seven overs before an unbroken stand of 67 between Nat Sciver and Annabel Sutherland sealed the result. Now the Stars wait to see whether they will face the Brisbane Heat or Sydney Thunder in Saturday’s finalDealing in singlesThe pressure was applied early to Devine, who was unusually tentative, and Mooney as their scoring in the first three overs of the Powerplay was solely in singles. The first ball of the fourth over finally brought a boundary – albeit an outside edge from Mooney – and by the end of the six overs they had given themselves a base at 0 for 32, albeit a sluggish one, and the boundary count remained at one. It would be a while until that changed. And it was about as good as the Scorchers’ position got.King crownedKing has been one of the revelations of the season for the Stars – both with bat and ball – after not making the starting XI for the first two matches. With her first delivery she struck the huge blow, trapping Devine lbw when she missed a sweep, and across her next three overs would all-but win the match. Amy Jones, whose tournament has never got going due to injury, chipped a catch to mid-off and when Mooney did the same, with a touch more force, the Scorchers were 4 for 51 in the 11th. Between the mayhem caused by King, Chloe Piparo had been run out by Erin Osborne from her follow through after responding to Mooney’s call. King finished with 3 for 16 and her four overs included 15 dot balls.Scrambling a scoreThrough a combination of Bolton, Heather Graham and Sarah Glenn the Scorchers did manage to rally in the second half of the innings. Their boundary count was finally doubled in the 13th over when Graham sent King over mid-off, repeating the dose next ball as King conceded half her final tally in those two deliveries which emphasised the overall control she had. Left-arm spinner Sophie Day was given the responsibility of the 19th over and conceded just five while Nicole Faltum produced a smart piece of glovework to remove the dangerous Sarah Glenn.Natalie Sciver plays one fine•Getty ImagesTrading blowsThe Stars did not hold back during the powerplay. Elyse Villani took 14 off the opening over – although her first boundary was a top edge that nearly found deep square leg – and then Mignon du Preez, who has been the glue of the batting, was bowled off her boot by Devine’s first delivery. Would 2 for 20 prompt a period of watchfulness? Nope. Lanning and Sciver took 14 off Glenn’s second over, quickly eating into the small target, and after six overs the Stars were 2 for 54. Then came one of the deliveries of the season as Graham nipped one off the seam to take Lanning’s off stump. Another quick wicket and anything was possible but the experience of Sciver and the coolness of the ever-improving Sutherland – who produced one of the shots of the night with a lofted drive for six – ensured no further alarms. They will take some beating in the final.

Norwich one step away from manager who’s never finished lower than fourth

After sacking David Wagner following play-off failure up against Leeds United, Norwich City are now reportedly one step away from signing their new manager and kicking off a new era at Carrow Road.

Norwich manager news

Wagner guided Norwich into the Championship's top six, before watching on as his side were eased out of the way by a dominant Leeds side in a 4-0 thrashing. Those in Norfolk then wasted no time before parting ways with their manager, with the club's sporting director Ben Knapper telling the official website: “David has operated with class and dignity throughout his period as Norwich City head coach, but we now feel that the time is right for us to move in a different direction.

“We remain committed to progressing our football club, in both the short and long-term, working through a diligent and thorough strategy. The appointment of a new head coach is an important one. We will now work and continue our due diligence with the view of making an appointment in the near future.”

That different direction has seemingly taken the Canaries towards Denmark too. According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Norwich are now one step away from signing Johannes Thorup from Nordsjaelland with his work permit accepted on Thursday. This will likely see the 35-year-old arrive to take charge of just the second club in his managerial career, pending the board's final decision.

28 year-old Arsenal coach could now leave after Sunday to join Norwich

The Canaries have just sacked David Wagner.

ByTom Cunningham May 17, 2024

Nonetheless, his first two seasons in the dugout have certainly gone well, with Nordsjaelland finishing second in his first campaign before falling to fourth in his second, meaning that the Dane has never finished lower than the top four when taking charge of a senior side.

Thorup represents an exciting unknown

Norwich find themselves at a crossroads this summer. They're in no position to panic about Championship relegation, but promotion also seems a world away despite reaching the play-offs in the current campaign. And given that they've not been in the Premier League since 2022, they risk stagnation in England's second tier and away from their ability to bounce consistently up to the top flight.

Now is the time to try something new away from the same names and experienced managers. Now is the time to take a risk on a manager like Thorup. He's shown plenty of signs in Denmark that he has the potential to step up in the Championship, but at 35 years old, he will still need the time to build an ideal project at Carrow Road.

His preferred 4-3-3 attacking formation should add the excitement that Wagner lacked at times, whilst his connection with Nordsjaelland will hopefully create a pathway for talent to make their way to English football courtesy of Norwich. The Danish club are owned by the Right to Dream Academy in Ghana, which has produced the likes of West Ham United star Mohammed Kudus.

O Alvinegro teve 143 mil interações no Facebook e 213 mil no Twitter.

Tottenham now eyeing move to sign £60m forward who may replace Richarlison

Tottenham are eyeing up a £60m forward as they look to strengthen their forward line this summer.

Tottenham to revamp squad

After finishing 5th in the Premier League during Ange Postecoglou's first season at the helm, Tottenham are looking to make major changes to their squad this summer as they look to regain a place in the Champions League.

The Australian stated earlier this year that it will take multiple transfer windows to turn Spurs into a complete force.

"We haven’t had any European football this year, so if you’ve got European football as well, it’s impossible to try to maintain a level of performance in the Premier League and play in multiple competitions unless you have a strong squad," said Postecoglou.

Tottenham now ready to bid £34 million for "serious" Unai Emery target

The north Londoners could get revenge on Aston Villa after losing the battle for fourth.

ByEmilio Galantini May 24, 2024

Part of the key to building a strong squad is moving on players who are not of a high enough quality, and in Spurs' case, a number of names could depart this summer.

Emerson Royal, Bryan Gil, Giovani Lo Celso, Troy Parrott, Joe Rodon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Richarlison, Tanguy Ndombele, Sergio Reguilon, Japhet Tanganga, Manor Solomon and Djed Spence have all been rumoured as the Tottenham players up for sale this summer, and it is believed Postecoglou is eyeing upgrades across the board.

The Tottenham boss also spoke of the need to revamp his forward line recently. "Yeah, absolutely. It's no secret. You saw the way we finished the season. We obviously lost Richy and Timo as well with injuries but we're fairly light in that area," said Postecoglou on the need for new attackers.

"We started last season with Manor [Solomon] and [Ivan] Perisic and we were quite healthy in that front third in terms of numbers, but as the year went on it became pretty evident that we need to bulk up. We're in Europe as well next year so we'll have more games and it's definitely an area of the park we'll need to strengthen."

Tottenham eye move to sign £60m forward who may replace Richarlison

Now, an update on Spurs' pursuit of fresh names at the top end of the pitch has been provided by GiveMeSport, which reports that Tottenham are considering a move for Evanilson after monitoring the FC Porto frontman's performances during the second half of the season.

In terms of a fee for the South American, GMS adds that Newcastle were previously expecting to pay around £60m for the striker. Given Spurs have no Champions League football next term, such a transfer would likely need to be funded by player sales.

As Evanilson is a striker, moving on a player like Richarlison would make sense to help fund the move. The Brazilian is earning £90,000 a week at Tottenham and is valued at around £35m by Transfermarkt. While that fee may not be enough to fund the full deal for Evanilson, it would go a long way to helping land a player who enjoyed a more prolific campaign than his fellow countryman.

O’Neil delighted: Wolves set to sign £10,000 p/w player in permanent deal

Wolverhampton Wanders are set to sign a “quality player” in a permanent transfer, something which has delighted Gary O‘Neil.

Wolves transfer rumours

On the pitch, Wolves are battling for a top half finish in the Premier League with five games remaining. O’Neil has done a solid job after arriving days before the season began, but off the pitch, it has been frustrating at points in the transfer market.

Exciting Wolves transfer claim made with “very talented” striker named

It could be a busy summer at Molineux as they hunt for a forward.

ByBen Browning Apr 19, 2024

For example, in the January window, Wolves failed to sign a new striker while allowing Fabio Silva and Sasa Kalajdzic to leave on loan. O’Neil hasn’t forgotten that either, venting his frustration after the draw with Burnley earlier this month.

The club are looking to rectify that this summer and are expected to sign teenage forward Stephano Carrillo from Mexican side Santos Laguna. Wolves are also readying an offer to sign Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal, whereas speculation elsewhere claims they are in pole position to sign Southampton striker Che Adams and have made a bid for SC Braga attacker Rodrigo Gomes.

It isn’t just in attack that Wolves want to strengthen, though. Contact has reportedly been made for UD Las Palmas goalkeeper Alvaro Valles. However, one deal that looks set to be sealed relatively easily is for a current Molineux loanee.

Wolves set to sign Tommy Doyle

The Express and Star shared an update on Wolves loanee Tommy Doyle, claiming he is set to sign a long-term contract at Molineux with the club planning to activate their £4.3m option to buy from Manchester City.

O’Neil admitted he and the club are “delighted” with Doyle and is expecting a deal to be done. “I would expect him to be here next year. Hopefully we can get that done fairly quickly in the summer. I know he feels settled and I know he’s enjoying it. We’re delighted with how he’s done, so I don’t foresee any issues with that one being done.”

Doyle, on £10,000-a-week, has been a regular in the matchday squad under O’Neil, making 29 appearances in all competitions, scoring once in the FA Cup. Still just 22 years of age, he looks to have found a home with Wolves and came in for praise from Andy Edwards earlier this year.

“He’s a quality player. He’s got some real character, he’s got tenacity, he loves that side of the game. Even with the style of his running, he wants to get into tackles and disrupt players. We know his quality on the ball, some of his passing was excellent.”
