Sidebottom rubber-stamps Yorkshire title credentials

On days such as these are Yorkshire’s Championship credentials rubber-stamped. With Ryan Sidebottom turning in one of his habitually irresistible spells of swing and stamina, and threatening briefly to claim all ten wickets in the innings, Warwickshire’s batsmen were routed in the gloaming at Edgbaston.Bowled out for 69, their lowest first-class total for 29 years and their lowest at Edgbaston since 1982, they avoided the follow-on by the skin of their tenth wicket – no mean feat when you have already reduced your opponents to 213 in their first innings – then watched Yorkshire’s batsmen plough off into the distance in a less dramatically one-sided evening session.By the close of a day in which Edgbaston’s bespoke “e”-shaped floodlights had been a near-constant companion, Will Rhodes had calmly notched up his maiden Championship half-century with Jack Leaning alongside him on 28. At 125 for 1, the lead was already an imposing 259 with nine wickets standing, and with two days remaining, there is plenty time for Yorkshire to turn the screw further, even with a dour forecast in prospect.Yorkshire’s day began with a sniff of an opening, courtesy of Sidebottom’s two-wicket burst on Sunday night, but plenty of work still required to restore parity after a slipshod display with the bat in which Jonny Bairstow’s century had shown up the shortcomings of the rest of the order. After a rain-wrecked morning session had been reduced to nine balls, the mere fact that play was possible after lunch came as something of a surprise. Either way, Warwickshire’s batsmen did not appear remotely ready to repel the threat posed by the oldest swinger in town.”Taking a few early wickets last night helped the confidence,” said Sidebottom. “I suppose it happens like that, you get in a bit of rhythm, you put it in the right area with a little bit of seam and swing, you get the edge, got a few bowleds, it was really nice.”In the team meeting this morning, Dizzy [Jason Gillespie] actually put in onto me to say a few words and I said we’ve got to bowl full and straight, so I had to do what I’d said!”Sidebottom required nine deliveries in the afternoon session to send shockwaves through Warwickshire’s innings. Having been standing at the far end on Sunday evening when Varun Chopra shouldered arms to Sidebottom’s first ball of the innings, Ian Westwood might have realised the folly of leaving the good-length deliveries. Instead he too had his stumps flattened by a wicked late curler, and at 29 for 3, Warwickshire’s innings swung out of control.Laurie Evans needed ten balls to get off the mark and was then cut down by his 11th, another Sidebottom special that curled around his half-formed defences to flatten his off stump, as Warwickshire contrived to lose their next five wickets for no runs in the space of 30 balls.Sam Hain bagged a nine-ball duck as he handed Sidebottom his fifth wicket of the innings, courtesy of a smart take by Jack Leaning at third slip, whereupon, two balls later, Peter McKay was pinned so palpably lbw that Sidebottom didn’t bother turning to the umpire to appeal as he charged off in celebration. At that stage, Sidebottom had claimed all six wickets in the innings but before he could start a new over, Warwickshire lost their seventh, and their third in four balls, when Jonathan Trott, their only remaining hope, was outstandingly plucked by Leaning, scooped at full stretch in the slips to give Jack Brooks his first scalp of the day.Jeetan Patel registered the fifth duck of the innings when he fenced limply outside off to be caught behind in Brooks’ next over, and Boyd Rankin the sixth, though not before he had raised ironic cheers in the crowd for scoring Warwickshire’s first run in six-and-a-half overs, a deflection off the helmet that required a break for some running repairs. At 37 for 9, the ludicrous prospect of the follow-on now loomed into view – Yorkshire’s bowlers could hardly have been fresher, with Sidebottom and Brooks running on adrenaline and the change seamers, Tim Bresnan and Steve Patterson, yet to be called upon, and Andrew Gale signalled Yorkshire’s desire to stick their opponents back in with one of the more improbable 37-for-9 fields you’ll ever witness – two slips and four men out on the boundary. But Rikki Clarke found the gumption to resist. He flicked Sidebottom over square leg for six and added three more fours en route to 28 from 42 balls which, at that stage, was the joint-second-highest score of the match. His resistance was ended when Patterson bowled him through the gate, leaving Oliver Hannon-Dalby unbeaten on 5.Yorkshire’s second innings was a model of uncomplicated restraint. The conditions remained trying but the fizz was understandably absent from their attack. Rhodes capitalised with 53 not out from 125 balls, an innings of understated class that showed why, at 20 years old, he is a batsman whose progress is being so closely monitored. With Leaning no less resolute, the only man to fall was Alex Lees, who was smartly taken at first slip by Chopra to end an opening stand of 58. But Warwickshire’s problems were compounded soon afterwards when McKay, the wicketkeeper who had been conspicuous by his failure to go for that catch, had to leave the field with a suspected broken finger. His role was temporarily filled by Andy Umeed, a 19-year-old batsman whose maiden first-class match came for Scotland against Afghanistan at Stirling last month.

Scarpa cobrou e marcou, garantindo a vitória do Palmeiras.

Glorioso surpreende

Muita vontade, pouco futebol

Garoto resolve

Only by playing Full Members can we learn how to beat them – Stanikzai

Asghar Stanikzai, the Afghanistan captain, has joined the chorus of Associate voices calling for more opportunities to play against Full Members

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Mar-2016Asghar Stanikzai, the Afghanistan captain, has joined the chorus of Associate voices calling for more opportunities to play against Full Members. Speaking to the media on the eve of his team’s World T20 clash with Sri Lanka, Stanikzai said the level of talent in Afghanistan was evident from their remarkable climb up the cricketing ladder over the last decade, and said the gap between Full Members and Associates would only narrow from more regular competiton.”You can’t make big comparisons between Afghanistan and other Associates,” Stanikzai said. “Many other Associates have been playing for the last 30 to 40 years, participating in World Cups and other events. But if you see Afghanistan’s history at the elite level, we have only been playing for the last 6-7 years.”In that time we have achieved what other nations couldn’t do in 30-40 years. It shows how much talent Afghanistan have to play at the elite level. Definitely we need more games against the Full Members, it can increase our experience in the game.”Pointing to Afghanistan’s recent ODI and T20 series wins over Zimbabwe, both home and away, Stanikzai said his side had what it took to beat a Full Member side.”If we play against other Associate countries, we will get experience from each other, but if you play with a Full Member, like we did against Zimbabwe in ODIs and T20s, you learn how to beat them. We now have that experience. As long as we play more games against Full Members, the distance between Associates and Full Members will reduce.”Looking ahead to the game against Sri Lanka, Stanikzai was confident Afghanistan had the quality to pull off a win.”We have some game-changers, and we have not qualified for the Super 10s just to participate. We are ready to challenge some big teams.”Looking back to Afghanistan’s impressive display against Sri Lanka in the 2015 World Cup, where a century from Mahela Jayawardene prevented a potential upset, Stanikzai said the absence of the now retired Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara raised Afghanistan’s hopes.”We came close against Sri Lanka in the 2015 World Cup but their experienced batsmen, particularly Mahela Jayawardene, played outstandingly to beat us. This time most of their players are new; this time we have a good chance to beat them.”

West Indies allrounder Andre Russell has committed an “anti-doping whereabouts” violation, according to the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO), and could face a lengthy ban from cricket.Russell, who is part of the West Indies squad for the upcoming World T20, has reportedly missed three such tests in a 12-month period, which equates to a failed test under doping laws.”We received notification of Russell’s violation about two weeks ago and I’ve appointed a panel to hear his case,” JADCO independent disciplinary panel chairman Kent Pantry told .Athletes must make their whereabouts known to local anti-doping agencies to facilitate testing. Russell could face a possible two-year ban if found guilty of the violation.”There is a process regarding the findings by JADCO,” the West Indies Cricket Board said in a statement. “All that will be observed and you will be advised accordingly.”

Methodical Rahane approach ensures win

Ajinkya Rahane’s game – founded more on incremental run-gathering than rapid bursts of power-hitting – was perfectly conditioned to the Supergiants chase of 121

Arun Venugopal in Mumbai 09-Apr-20160:55

‘The ball was stopping and seaming’ – Rahane

An unbeaten 66 off 42. A strike rate of 157. A target of 122. This is Ajinkya Rahaneterritory. While it would be unfair to suggest he is a batsman made for low-pressure situations, his game – founded more on incremental run-gathering than rapid bursts of power-hitting – is perfectly conditioned to the rhythm of chasing small-to-middling totals. Such targets can cause panic, particularly on surfaces where the ball doesn’t come in a straight line, and this is where Rahane’s expertise is valuable.Harbhajan blames shot selection for loss

“Do you ever see a Mumbai wicket that is difficult to bat?” joked Mumbai Indians spinner Harbhajan Singh after a game in which the hosts were held to 121 for 8, with Ambati Rayudu the only batsman in the top seven making double-figures.
“We just need to work on our game a bit more. Sometimes we think there’s hardly any time [while batting] in the middle, but we need to take more time.”
Despite three of the four matches in the World T20 being won by the team chasing, Mumbai had opted to bat first. Harbhajan admitted to not knowing the rationale behind the decision, but said they needed to read the pitch better.
“It was obviously Rohit’s decision to bat first and I stand by him. [I think he felt there would be] less pressure on the batsmen while batting first. Even if you bat first here, you need to play better cricket than this.”

He has done this many times for Rajasthan Royals in the past – Saturday’s score was Rahane’s 19th 50-plus score in his IPL career, level with Virat Kohli at seventh in that category – mostly with Rahul Dravid for company. In IPL 2013, Rahane and Dravid negotiated a Jaipur pitch that had plenty of lateral movement to go with some serious pace from Morne Morkel and Umesh Yadav, and accomplished a chase of 155 against Delhi Daredevils. Saturday’s Wankhede pitch, though markedly different from the flat surfaces in the World T20, was not unplayable and the target was well below par. Rahane had this covered. The first ball of the innings from Mitchell McClenaghan was curving back in, but Rahane met it before landing with a friction-free push-drive for four. His stock-in-trade was proving useful, as Rahane, restricted for room by a short ball from Jasprit Bumrah, remained still and punched it late through cover. In the ninth over, Vinay Kumar bowled length outside off with mid-off in the ring and Rahane had no trouble placing his drive between the bowler and fielder. It wasn’t always pretty though – his first six, off McClenaghan, was a hurried, top-edged pull that only just went over the square-leg fielder. In fact, all his attempted pulls wanted for timing on a pitch that allowed for healthy bounce and sharp movement off the seam. But with little scoreboard pressure and Faf du Plessis playing the composed role Dravid did at Rajasthan, Rahane could afford a little rashness once he got his eye in.”I’ve always felt the opening partnership is vital in low-scoring matches and it’s good we got a 78-run stand,” he said. “Our intent was positive, we were looking for runs but it was important to play close to the body. It was important to time the ball on the wicket. This was the first time I was batting together with Faf [du Plessis] and I really enjoyed a lot.”Rahane admitted the pitch was more difficult to bat on than they had initially expected and going for broke wasn’t an option.”We thought it could be 170-180 wicket,” Rahane said. “The ball was stopping and seaming a bit, so I wanted to play close to my body. I wanted to take my time. I didn’t want to take many chances in the first six overs and just wanted to play proper cricketing shots. Once I was 25-30, I wanted to take my team through.”After du Plessis was dismissed in the 10th over, Rahane found himself batting alongside Kevin Pietersen for the first time in his career. Despite Pietersen being the archetypal aggressor who quickened his tempo towards the end, Rahane was amused at the role-reversal that happened initially. “It was fun batting with KP. When he came in, he just told me, ‘Just play your game, whatever you are playing so far, and I’ll give you strike.””It was very different, Kevin Pietersen saying, ‘I’ll give you strike and you play your shots’. It was very good that he told me such things. But yeah, good to have him. We all know he is an experienced player, especially in this format.”

Moores declined Pakistan approach

Peter Moores has turned down the chance of becoming Pakistan coach

Peter Moores has turned down the chance of becoming Pakistan coach. Moores, the former England coach, was approached by the PCB but, after discussions, decided not to pursue the opportunity before a formal offer was made. While tempted by the chance to return to international coaching, Moores was reluctant to commit to long periods away from his family. “I was hugely flattered to be approached,” Moores told ESPNcricinfo. “And I was very tempted by such a prestigious role with an exciting team.”But having thought about it deeply, I don’t think it is the right time for me or my family. I have committed myself to a consultancy role with Nottinghamshire and I am enjoying spending time with my kids as they grow up.”Moores was sacked from his role as England coach for the second time almost exactly 12 months ago. While his reputation took a battering in the media following England’s poor World Cup campaign in 2015, it is clear that he is still highly thought of within the game. Both Alastair Cook and Joe Root publically credited Moores for his influence in the aftermath of England’s Ashes win last year and Nottinghamshire’s form improved dramatically after he joined in a consultancy role last year. After failing to win any of their first five Championship matches – and only one of their first eight – Notts were bottom of Division One at the start of July. But after Moores joined, they won 14 and drew two of their remaining 20 matches across all competitions including five out of six in the Championship. He previously coached both Sussex and Lancashire to the County Championship title, forming an especially productive partnership with Mushtaq Ahmed, currently head of Pakistan’s National Cricket Academy, during the spell at Sussex. Moores’ son, Tom, is a 19-year-old wicketkeeper batsman who represented England in the U-19 World Cup and recently joined the staff at Nottinghamshire.Waqar Younis stepped down at Pakistan coach almost a month ago after two years in the role. His scathing report into poor discipline within the squad – and his less than flattering views on the leadership skills of Shahid Afridi – were subsequently leaked to the media, while he cited conflicts at board level as another issue inhibiting the team’s progress. The coaching role is understood to be based in Lahore, though Pakistan are likely to continue to play their home games in the UAE for the foreseeable future.
