Marsh brothers give Scorchers title

Third time is a charm for the Perth Scorchers as they claimed their first BBL title with a dominant 39-run win over the Hobart Hurricanes at their home ground

The Report by Alex Malcolm07-Feb-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThe third time was a charm for the Perth Scorchers as they claimed their first BBL title with a dominant 39-run win over the Hobart Hurricanes at their home ground. The Scorchers victory was set up by some extraordinary hitting from the Marsh brothers. Shaun, who was not deemed fit to fly to South Africa for Australia’s Test tour, produced an unbeaten 63 from just 43 balls whilst his younger brother Mitchell belted 37 off 12 to power the Scorchers to a match-winning total.Jason Behrendorff and Man of the Match Brad Hogg both bowled superbly, picking up two wickets each to ensure the Hurricanes fell well short of their target. The Scorchers gambled on Shaun Marsh’s troublesome calf and it proved an inspired move. He came out in the fourth over with the score at just 11 after the fall of Scorchers captain Simon Katich. He played the support act initially as an in-form Craig Simmons struck five fours and two sixes after scoring just six runs in his first 14 balls. But his luck ran out when he sliced Evan Gulbis to third man.Brad Hogg took 2 for 17 in the final to finish with an economy of 6.19 in the tournament•Getty Images

Marsh picked up the slack. He launched the legspin of Cameron Boyce twice into the stands in the 13th over. He was aided brilliantly by Adam Voges as the pair combined for 63 runs in just six overs. When Voges fell for 27, Mitchell Marsh walked out and exploded. Out of the 12 balls he faced, four peppered the crowd and three found the rope to rocket the Scorchers total to 4 for 191.The Hurricanes had relied heavily on Ben Dunk and Tim Paine throughout the tournament but Behrendorff accounted for both of them with another outstanding spell in the Powerplay. The left-armer jolted Paine’s offstump with a full inswinger and built enough pressure on Dunk to force a mistake.Hogg was called upon with the required run rate at more than 10-an-over. His four overs cost just 17 runs and he bamboozled Jonathan Wells and forced Travis Birt to hole out.The only batsman the Scorchers could not contain was George Bailey who kept his head while all around him were losing theirs. His 58 from 32 balls was a masterclass in manipulation and power-hitting. But without any support he could not keep touch with the required rate and went down with the sinking ship in the 15th over. The Hurricanes batted out the overs but only to delay the Scorchers’ celebration. The 20,783-strong record crowd at the WACA had seen their team fall twice before at the final hurdle. Not a third time.

Zagueiro Ligger, do RB Bragantino, faz parte da melhor defesa da Série B

'It's all about mental fine-tuning now' – Taylor

With only a day available between games, Zimbabwe captain Brendon Taylor said his team would have to mentally work through where they had fallen short against Ireland, and avoid the same mistakes against Netherlands

Brendan Taylor (second from left) and the rest of the Zimbabwe players will have to regroup quickly after their last-ball defeat to Ireland•ICC

Probably only fellow captains can empathise with Brendan Taylor’s plight after Zimbabwe’s last-ball loss to Ireland. More so considering Taylor himself had blown the chance to take the game into the Super Over by missing the stumps as Ireland scrambled the winning bye. Even as he must have tried to get a hold on his emotions, he had to front up to questions at the post-match presentation, the post-match press conference, and then the pre-match press conference for Zimbabwe’s next game against Netherlands. As he sat blankly in front of the mike, Taylor still seemed to be simmering at what had transpired on the field moments ago. But soon he had to voice his thoughts on how he would try to turn his side around in the gap of a day, now that Zimbabwe needed to win both their remaining matches and hope Ireland did not end up winning all of theirs. Taylor gathered himself and drew hope from how Zimbabwe had bounced back in the warm-up matches, comfortably chasing down 169 against Afghanistan after an unexpected defeat to Hong Kong.”When we lose, we generally do come back stronger,” Taylor said. “Had that against Hong Kong when we played Afghanistan. We realise we have to have two very good games if we are to have half a chance of getting through. We are not looking too far ahead. We are looking to a good training day and come out to win on Wednesday. It is as clear as I can put it for us. We know what we have to do and I am pretty sure we will have an improved performance.”With so much limited-overs experience in his squad, Taylor had said earlier that he did not need to tell his players what to do, and that they needed to take on more responsibility. And with only a day available between games, Taylor added there was no time for individuals to work on their games, and it would all come down to mentally working through where they had fallen short against Ireland, and avoiding the same mistakes against Netherlands.”It is just mental fine-tuning now. You cannot be cramming in hours in the nets and trying to vary your game. Maybe you can go out and have a solid net practice but mentally is probably the most important aspect of leading up to Wednesday. Guys need to sit down, regroup and try and iron out a few areas we can improve upon and come Wednesday, we should be clear about what we need to do.”Taylor hinted Zimbabwe could tweak the playing XI that did duty against Ireland, although he said it was too early for him to reveal more details. “We have got some good guys sitting in the dugout so we might have a closer look at that. I haven’t thought too far. I’ll spend some time with the coaching staff and the selectors. There could be a possible change. We have got some talented guys sitting up.”

É a 8ª maior marca geral do campeonato.

Baroda in final despite loss, Goa fall just short

A round-up of the Syed Mushaq Ali Trophy Super League matches played on April 12 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Apr-2014Group APrashant Gupta’s unbeaten maiden T20 hundred helped Uttar Pradesh chase down a 179-run target against Haryana, boosting their run rate and, eventually it turned out, putting them in the final against Baroda on Monday.*Prashant slammed 102 off 58 balls striking five fours and seven sixes as he guided the run chase with steady partnerships. He had good support from Eklavya Dwivedi and Akshdeep Nath as UP achieved the target with four balls to spare.Earlier, Haryana were reduced to 119 for 5 in the 14th over after their openers Avi Barot and Rahul Dewan had added 63. Late cameos from Rahul Dalal (24 from 19 balls) and Lokesh Sharma (16 off 10 balls), however, lifted the side to a competitive 178 for 8.Both Goa – one of the most dominant teams in this tournament – and Gujarat needed to win big to topple UP at the top of the points table, and seal their place in the final. Both teams fell short, Goa heartbreakingly so. Gujarat needed to win by roughly 30 runs, defending 180. Goa needed to chase it down before the completion of the 15th over. Gujarat didn’t get close, Goa fell short by roughly two balls. Needing a boundary off 14.4 to lift their net run rate over UP’s, the set Harshad Gadekar was out caught. The following delivery, the other set batsman, Rohit Asnodkar was bowled by left-arm seamer Kamlesh Thakor. Goa finished the game with a four one ball later, but it was not enough – again it was so close yet so far for them; had they managed a six off this final delivery, their net run rate would still have been marginally better than UP’s.That they were able to get so close was once again down to a solid platform set at the top – opener Swapnil Asnodkar slammed 64 off 28 deliveries. If Gujarat were in with a good chance of their own, that was also because of the solid beginning their top order game them. Priyank Panchal and Rajdeep Darbar added 86 in nine overs, before No. 3 Smit Patel hit 50 not out of 31 to take them to a very competitive 180.Goa had suffered similar heartache even in the Ranji Trophy, failing to make the knockouts by the thinnest of margins.Group BBaroda qualified for the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy despite yielding their three-match winning streak in the Super League. Kerala were joined with them on 12 points with the victory, but were 0.114 points shy in the run-rate battle. The fact that it got that close was because of an unmitigated assault from Raiphi Gomez. He razed 42 off 19 balls, with three fours and three sixes to imbue momentum to a meandering Kerala innings. Jafar Jamal held the other end during a stand of 55 runs in 30 balls as a scoreline of 81 for 5 in 14.1 was transformed to 152 for 6 in 20 overs.Aditya Waghmode kept Baroda in the hunt with a well-paced half-century. But the middle overs proved disastrous as KJ Rakesh and Rohan Prem orchestrated a collapse – five wickets for 18 runs. Waghmode was the first domino who fell after scoring 50 off 32 balls. The tail realised the futility of an equation that demanded 48 off 13 balls and ushered Baroda through to the 20 overs to salvage vital run-rate points.A fifty from Kshitiz Sharma and seven wickets shared between Javed Khan and Yogesh Nagar helped Delhi beat Rajasthan by seven runs.Kshitiz’s 57 off 42 balls had four fours and four sixes and helped lift Delhi from 36 for 3 to 121 before Sumit Narwal smacked a quick 17 off seven balls to take the score to 144 for 4.In reply, Arjit Gupta looked set to steer Rajasthan to victory, smacking a 36-ball 72 with five fours and six sixes. His dismissal in the 13th over, however, created instability within the ranks and two overs later, Ankit Lamba’s dismissal triggered a slide that saw Rajasthan lose their last seven wickets for 21 runs to fold for 137. Javed and Nagar were the architects of the collapse and finished with 4 for 18 and 3 for 13 respectively.12.45GMT, April 12: The round-up has been updated, after the completion of the Goa-Gujarat game.

Rogers produces Lord's miracle

Chris Rogers, with a chanceless and unbeaten double-century, led his Middlesex side to victory with the third highest successful fourth-innings run chase in the history of the County Championship

Tea Break excerpt: ‘Boof has brought the enjoyment back’ – Rogers

The queue of spectators waiting to buy a copy of the scorecard at the end of this match told its own story: those present on the final day of this game at Lord’s knew they had seen something special. You might even call it the miracle of Lord’s.Chris Rogers, with a chanceless and unbeaten double-century, led his Middlesex side to a remarkable victory. Only twice in the history of the County Championship has a side successful chased more than the 472 achieved here. Only five times has a side scored more in the fourth innings of a Championship match. Middlesex have never scored as many to win at Lord’s.But so masterful was Rogers’ innings that he made this run chase – this almost impossible run chase – appear simple. While no other batsman looked comfortable, the 36-year-old Rogers made a highly impressive Yorkshire attack look ordinary in recording the 67th first-class century and the 10th double-century of a career that keeps rising to new heights. Angus Fraser, the Middlesex director of cricket and a man not prone to hyperbole, rated it “as good an innings as I’ve seen from a Middlesex player in my time at the club.””I’ve seen special innings from Desmond Haynes, Mike Gatting, Mark Ramprakash and Jacques Kallis, but I don’t think I’ve seen anything to better that,” Fraser told ESPNcricinfo. “I’m numb, to be honest. It’s a big statement, but I think that’s one of the great Middlesex performances. It’s a game supporters will be talking about in decades time. It was special.”Rogers, who struck 37 crisp boundaries in his 290 ball master-class, rated it the best innings of his career in domestic cricket and admitted afterwards he gave his side little hope when their chase began. He also confirmed afterwards that participation in the 2015 Ashes series remains a target.”I didn’t give us any chance,” Rogers said. “I just wanted us to go and play without fear. I was so disappointed with the way we batted in the first innings. So to play an innings like, be not out and win chasing 470 that’s the kind of thing you dream about as a cricketer. It was almost a perfect run chase.”People tell you that once you get to your mid- thirties it’s time to call it a day. But I keep surprising myself with my body and my enjoyment. I’m hoping to get to the Ashes next year. That would be an amazing way to finish.”It was not, perhaps, as awe-inspiring an innings as Gordon Greenidge’s match-winning performance here in 1984. But for strength of character, for determination and for sheer inevitability, this was an innings of the highest-class. Yorkshire’s bowlers will be having nightmares about his cover drive – a shot he played so often and so well that Joe Root, in his first match as captain, was powerless to stop it – for weeks to come. There will be, inevitably, some criticism of the Yorkshire bowling. While they were not at their best – they failed to maintain a consistent enough line or length to build any meaningful pressure – they were unfortunate to encounter a fine player in the best of form and a slow pitch that had eased considerably in the warm summer sunshine. When a man is in the sort of touch where he can drive length balls for four and treat back of length balls as if they are long-hops, any faults are going to be magnified. Yorkshire really did not bowl that badly and Root really could not have done too much differently. Sometimes you just have to accept that someone has played better than you.Still, their coach Jason Gillespie was disappointed in their performance. “We didn’t get our skills right and we paid the price,” Gillespie said. “We were pretty poor on the third day. There were far too many half-volleys, far too many short balls. We gave Rogers too many four balls and it gave them a lot of confidence. To some extent we let him play the way he did. You can’t afford that at first-class level. Our bowlers have to take stock and learn from this.”The defeat is not a fatal blow to Yorkshire’s Championship credentials, though. Even at this early stage of the season, only two sides – Durham and Somerset – have yet to suffer defeat. While Yorkshire will surely suffer more from England call-ups than most, they also have the likes of Tim Bresnan and Jonny Bairstow to come back into the team. Still, it is worth noting that, for all the international players produced by the club, none of the first-class counties has currently gone so long (since 2002) without winning some silverware (including Division Two titles) as Yorkshire. They did not enjoy much luck on the final day, either. Dawid Malan, on 28, edged just short of the slips and Neil Dexter, whose late barrage followed a sticky start, was controversially given the benefit of the doubt on 21 when it was unclear whether his edge behind had carried. When Ryan Sidebottom, armed with the second new ball, beat Rogers with a couple of beauties, Yorkshire’s hopes rose once more but, after that threat ebbed, victory become inevitable. Even with the game beyond them, though, Liam Plunkett had the hostility to inflict a painful blow on Rogers’ body with a short ball. While an Australian produced the match-defining contribution, there was plenty here to cheer England followers, too. Both Sam Robson and Gary Ballance batted well and Steven Finn showed signs of improvement after his chastening winter with England. It seems unlikely England will rush him back into the fold – in Rogers’ words “his confidence is still a little bit fragile and even he would say he’s not bowling as well as previously” – but from the husk of the man who was sent home early from Australia, a fearsome fast bowler is starting to emerge once again. His international career is not over. The match was less positive for Eoin Morgan. His unconvincing second innings ended when he gloved a somewhat frenetic sweep and, with the ODI against Scotland likely to rule him out of the next round of games – it seems England will not allow substitutions to be made and instead rest players for the first two days and then stage a training game on Tuesday and Wednesday – he will have few more opportunities to impress in red ball cricket. If England really do see him as part of their Test plans, a strong case could be made to allow him to miss the ODI to play another round of Championship matches.
