PCB set to re-launch biomechanics lab

Costly equipment for biomechanical analysis at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore is now set to be used, after years of neglect. The PCB has also approved renovation work at the NCA indoor school, and is updating it with a modern video simulator. The biomechanical equipment was procured for about Rs 44 million ($460,000) when Nasim Ashraf was in charge of the PCB, and was meant to be installed by December 2008. Since then all the equipment – 18 cameras along with the other supporting apparatus and the relevant software have been unused. The project was put on hold by the then chairman Ijaz Butt after PCB’s audit revealed massive financial mismanagement and the construction contract for the laboratory where the equipment was to be housed was suspended.According to the plan, part of the NCA’s outdoor practice area was to be used to accommodate the dedicated laboratory that would enable biomechanics experts to take a 2D analysis of a bowler’s action, by filming the players and then reducing the video to a stick-figure animation. The NCA biomechanics lab is equipped with state of the art Advanced Motion Capture Architecture from the UK-based Vicon Motion Systems Limited. The lab will operate with 18 motion-capture cameras and 6 high-speed video cameras. The lab was temporarily activated for a brief period at the NCA indoor school earlier in 2008 by the Vicon experts but was later shut down.”We are very enthusiastic about technology and keen to see the biomechanics lab functioning as soon as possible,” PCB director academies, Intikhab Alam, told ESPNcricinfo. “We are in no doubt about its scope and execution in research and for the development of the game and we obviously want to see the technology to be used in our players’ development.”We look forward to the use of the tool that will not only help bowlers to correct their flawed actions but can also help the batsmen to enhance their performance. It can also prevent injuries and be used for rehabilitation process. I don’t know why the equipment was unattended but importantly now we have been given the go-ahead by the chairman and we have started retrieving all the documentation and updating them accordingly to kick off this landmark project.”The PCB still has an understanding with Vicon, who will install the equipment once the building is completed. The project, according to Alam, will be managed by a team that includes a biomechanics expert, doctors, a mathematician, computer analysts and coaches.”We have entered the first phase of negotiation with the experts to be taken on board for making the lab functional,” Alam said. “The key role is that of a biomechanics expert and we are already engaged with an expert who has done her PhD from Austria. We will soon reach an agreement with her and a mathematician to work the laboratory. Besides, we have all the medical doctors, well-trained analysts and coaches.” Alam confirmed that the equipment was in good shape though the software needed some upgrading. Once operational, the PCB will be the only board in Asia to own a biomechanics lab.

'Humbled' Smith targets South Africa legacy

Graeme Smith said it ‘meant the world’ for South Africa to win their second successive series in Australia and hold on to the No. 1 ranking

Firdose Moonda at the WACA03-Dec-2012When Graeme Smith took his team home from Australia in the summer of 2005-06, he could not see a way to beat Ricky Ponting’s Invincibles. If you had told him then that seven years later, he would have had the better of Ponting twice he would not have believed it. After South Africa’s win in Perth, Smith had done just that and his satisfaction far outweighed any disbelief.”In 2005, it seemed a very long shot to be able to achieve this. I am extremely humbled,” he said. “I hope the people in Australia can respect what we have done and the way we have done it. For us, it means the world.”There are people in our set up that have taken many beatings at the hands of Australia. We know what is required to come here and be victorious. When we get on the plane, I will have a warm feeling to have been a part of something incredible and something special and to have been able to share with guys who have put in an immense amount of hard work behind the scenes to celebrate these moments.”The post-match party began in customary style, as the Australia team went over to the South Africa change-room to share a drink. The visitors, who were also the victors, stayed long after the hosts had left. After 8pm, the South Africa team made their way on to the field, bags and all, to have a celebratory photo session, which reminded team manager, Mohammed Moosajee, of their MCG revelries four years ago. As they walked out to the pitch where they had made history they were snapped along the way.In the privacy of the dressing room there may have been wilder festivities but in the open they were more restrained, even though there was no one but a few journalists watching while they worked. South Africa gathered together for a huddle and sang their team song. The lyrics haven’t been released but the essence of the anthem is about understanding what representing the country means. There might also have been a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ for Mark Boucher. In previous series wins, South Africa have held longer parties on field but this time it only lasted ten or so minutes. Then, they gathered their bags and walked off. Some of the team were able to get on a flight back home tonight, along with most of the management. The rest will follow tomorrow. Having spent almost half the year on the road, returning home has been a priority for the team throughout the year. This time, they go back having achieved more than ever before. The No. 1 ranking is secure and they have enjoyed a year during which they racked up a second successive series win in both England and Australia. That pattern is the “proudest achievement,” of Graeme Smith’s career – and surely every other member of the squad too. As a mark of how rare success in Australia is, consider that before today, only England and West Indies had recorded successive series victories in Australia.Winning in Australia is an achievement purely because of the quality of the opposition and their history of dominance. But for South Africa it is also how they won this series that stands out. “We had to scrap and adapt and our depth was tested,” Smith said. “At times, we didn’t bowl well. We hit our straps in this match and we got everything together. This was the performance that I have got used to in our guys over the years and it’s important not to take that for granted.”Now, Smith believes South Africa are on course to create their own period of hegemony. They have already overcome one of the toughest hurdles and with assignments against New Zealand and Pakistan to follow at home, they see an opportunity to hold on to the mace for longer than some of their predecessors have. “This series was going to be the challenge for us to give ourselves the opportunity to lengthen that gap [at the top of the rankings] and create that legacy,” Smith said. The era may have already begun. South Africa have played ten Tests in 2012, nine away, and have not lost one. “I am extremely proud to be a part of the last nine matches. For us to win back-to-back Test series in England and Australia is an immense effort. You just have to look back and see how long it took us to get here. Now to be able to take that and play in front of our home fans will be great.”

Hughes hopes to stamp one-day authority

There’s nothing like being picked while in form, and Phillip Hughes is in the one-day form of his life

There’s nothing like being picked while in form, and Phillip Hughes is in the one-day form of his life. If Bradman had played 50-over cricket he might have produced the kind of scores that Hughes has in the past two years. Consider this remarkable figure: in 14 of his past 20 one-day innings, Hughes has scored at least a half-century. In that time, a period that stretches back to December 2010, he has averaged 90.28. Among Australians, only Michael Bevan has a higher List A average than Hughes. And yet until now, Hughes has been considered a Test specialist by Australia’s selectors. When he walks out at the MCG on Friday in the first ODI against Sri Lanka, it will be his first limited-overs game for his country. Of course, it’s not easy breaking in to a top order that usually features David Warner, Shane Watson and Michael Clarke. But none of those men, nor Matthew Wade, are part of this ODI squad. It means Australia will likely employ a top three consisting entirely of uncapped men: Hughes, Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja. The selectors are juggling a number of factors – resting some players, keeping Hughes and Khawaja away from the BBL in preparation for the India tour, planning ahead to the 2015 World Cup. Not all of the new men will keep their places, but Hughes hopes he can do enough to remain in the side when others return.”It’s an opportunity for guys coming in now, there’s a few new faces around the squad,” Hughes said. “For those guys resting for the first couple of games, they play that much cricket and I’m sure they’ll come back fresh and bigger and better. It does allow guys now to get that opportunity … now given this opportunity I’m grateful for it and hopefully I can stamp my authority in this format.”My focus has been all three formats. I want to be that complete batsman playing three forms hopefully one day. There’s still work I’ve got to do but for this opportunity to come up I’m grateful for it. I’ve had a fair taste of Test cricket now but never in the short format, so that’s why I’m rapt about getting this chance.”There is nothing about Hughes’ game that suggests he should ever have been considered a Test-only player. Powerful through the off side and naturally aggressive, Hughes bats in a way that should transfer to ODI cricket. His style has helped him score 114, 95 not out and 73 from three of his five Ryobi Cup innings this summer, and he was one of the leading scorers in the Clydesdale Bank 40-over competition last year, playing for Worcestershire.”It’s a format that you’ve got to really attack and that’s probably my natural game,” Hughes said. “The instincts take over and I really like to attack and get on that front foot and take the game forward. I feel like I’ve worked on a number of shots, especially through the leg side, over the last six to 12 months. Hopefully I can take that into this series.”I feel like I’ve come a long way in one-day cricket. I had a stint in county cricket with Worcestershire and I felt like I performed quite well, and at the start of the season for South Australia. There’s work that I had to do and I feel like I’m quite confident in my one-day game now. I’m really grateful for this opportunity and hopefully I can make the most of it.”Although the Australians have not yet confirmed a batting order, the likelihood is that Hughes will open with Finch, although Khawaja is another option, having opened for Queensland with success this season. All three are likely to make their debuts on Friday, while the Queensland bowling allrounder Ben Cutting is also a chance to earn his first ODI cap, in a side that will be captained by George Bailey.
