Adam Gilchrist, the Kings XI Punjab captain, has said his playing career looks to be over. Gilchrist, who retired from international cricket in 2008, captained Deccan Chargers to the IPL title in 2009 and took over the leadership of Kings XI in 2011. The defeat against Delhi Daredevils in Dharamsala on Saturday, he said, was his last game, and added he would consider a full-time coaching role with Kings XI if offered; he’d been carrying the dual responsibility of captain and coach/mentor this season.”I would say I’ve played my last game of cricket just there,” Gilchrist said after the match. “I’ll go away and have a think about it and talk to the franchise. If the franchise is still keen to keep me involved as coach, which is a role I’ve really enjoyed, I find that I still enjoy being around the group. To be honest I didn’t miss the cricket that much.”I loved the fact that I could play the last couple of games, but I didn’t have the horrible desire that I was missing out. There isn’t that fire burning in my belly quite like it used to. I have to think about it but I just feel I won’t be playing.”Kings XI were shut out of contention for a place in the playoffs after they were beaten in their final league game by Daredevils. Gilchrist missed nearly a month of the IPL action this season due to a hamstring injury. “To miss the playoffs was disappointing. But there were some positives, especially the performance of some of the domestic players. Mandeep Singh, Gurkeerat Singh, Parvinder Awana… They’ve all done well and the exciting thing is that there’s still scope for them to learn, improve, develop and make that adjustment to the next level.”Gilchrist has played 67 IPL games, scoring 1775 runs at 27.73 and a strike-rate of 140.20. He’s scored two centuries and 10 fifties. Of his IPL experience, Gilchrist said: “The IPL will feature prominently in my memories of cricket. To come with a team that was last the previous year and win the title was very special (Deccan Chargers). One of the great memories of my cricket career was at this ground last year — that partnership (206 against Royal Challengers Bangalore) with Shaun (Marsh). So yeah, it has been a great experience.”

'Lazy' Warner works to liven up

A lapse that cost David Warner his wicket at Lord’s epitomised the details that Australia must get right if they are to inch closer to England in the second ODI at The Oval. Warner admitted to a bout of laziness when facing the swing and seam of Jimmy Anderson, resulting in an edge behind to Craig Kieswetter and the loss of a second critical wicket minutes after George Bailey’s departure. There were a few areas in which Michael Clarke’s men fell short in the series opener, not least the bowlers’ inability to contain a rampant Eoin Morgan in the closing overs of England’s innings. Clarke was involved in a catastrophic run-out that ended a promising innings by Matthew Wade, and a handful of lax fielding efforts also helped the hosts win their first ODI against Australia at Lord’s since 1997.Warner had played pugnaciously and well for his 56, but six runs after Bailey had dragged Anderson onto the stumps, he failed to use his feet sufficiently to cover a ball going across him, and snicked it to a diving Kieswetter. Characteristically blunt, Warner said it was the kind of dismissal he should not be allowing himself in England, where the ball can always move the fraction required to defeat a batsman using his hands alone.”It’s me thinking that I’m in and I shouldn’t be doing that,” Warner said. “It’s laziness, that’s all it comes down to. Early on I’ll be getting across to that and playing the ball on its merits, but as you get in you get a little bit tired, but what you tend to do is you know there’s no slips and you think you can get away with just working it down to third man or through extra cover.”That’s my game, I’ve got to learn from that, get my feet across, not be so lazy through that period, and capitalise on that. You’re never in when you’re over here, and it was a little bit lazy myself. If I go back there again I’d have used my feet a bit more and tried to work it into the gap for a single.”Among the other critical differences between the two innings was the fact that in the drier afternoon conditions, England were able to get the ball to reverse swing. Tim Bresnan’s second spell was much enhanced by the fact he was getting the ball to bend, and a curving full toss was to account for Clarke. Warner said the visitors had struggled to do similar in the morning, when numerous rain breaks kept the outfield damp and the ball less dry.”With the square that’s out there at Lord’s and the Oval, the ball’s going to be thrown in and going to be hitting the dirt, it’s going to allow that one part to get scuffed up a lot,” Warner said. “So if the guys work on the ball, keep one side shiny enough to get it going reverse it can prove crucial. Tim Bresnan got a couple to go pretty big, which is good for him, but we’ve got to try to counteract it and work out how we can play that.”Before he names his team for the second ODI, Clarke will consider his best use of the wicketkeeper Matthew Wade, whose sprightly batting seems under-utilised at No. 7. “He can bat anywhere and he’s shown that again,” Clarke said of Wade. “He’s a wonderful talent, a good striker of the ball.”It’s tough because he plays the new ball well and he’s quite positive, but in that middle order he’s very good at the death as well, he strikes the ball cleanly. Trying to work out what’s best for the team, that’s probably the most important thing for us at the moment, try to work out the best batting line-up for our team with the players we have and back and support that.”Clarke will also think again how best to use Steve Smith, who he considers an allrounder but remains reluctant to bowl. Smith’s batting looked far from likely to trouble England at Lord’s, though he has been cast in the kind of role usually ascribed to the far more experienced Michael Hussey.”Smithy’s a very talented allrounder, as we’ve seen for a while now,” Clarke said. “He can bat, bowl and is as good as anyone in the field. I’d love to see him put his hand up and make some runs, he’s batting at No. 6, a crucial position not having Michael Hussey here, and if he gets the opportunity with the ball, he’s been bowling every day in the nets and it looks like it’s coming out of his hand well.”

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has arranged two extra practice matches for the Under-19 team – against Papa New Guinea on August 1 and South Africa on August 3 – in Australia ahead of the Under-19 World Cup that starts on August 11. The two matches precede the official warm-up games against Scotland and South Africa on August 7 and 8 giving the Bangladesh side a total of four games before the start of the tournament.”I got a fair idea of the squad from the matches we played against BCB XI recently but the four warm-up matches we play in Australia will be really important,” Bangladesh Under-19 coach Sarwar Imran said during the departure press conference in Mirpur on Thursday. “It is being said that I got little time to adjust but I know all these players. Many of them played under me at age-level, club-level or in the Dhaka Premier League. I actually know them quite well.”Imran, who has been the coach of the Bangladesh national team previously, was appointed as the head coach of the Under-19 side after the team made an early exit from the Under-19 Asia Cup recently.”The team has been preparing for the last two years, so in that sense, the team is well prepared. When I took over, there were some injured pace bowlers but now everyone has recovered.”Bangladesh are in Group D along with South Africa, Sri Lanka and Namibia. “If we want to play the Cup or Plate competitions, we have to beat either or both Sri Lanka and South Africa. Still there will be matters pertaining to net run rate but I think we have the capability to go through,” he said.Wicketkeeper batsman Anamul Haque, who recently represented the Bangladesh senior team during the unofficial Twenty20s in Zimbabwe, has been appointed as the captain for the upcoming tournament. He is one of the four players in the current squad – Noor Hossain, Nurul Hasan and Soumya Sarkar being the other three – who played in the last Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand.”We have some players who have played the previous World Cup. So we hope they bring in that experience and give their hundred per cent,” Anamul said. “There won’t be any problems if we can train well in Australia and take the four practice matches seriously.”Anamul identified the pace attack, especially after the return of Taskin Ahmed and Abu Jayed, as the team’s strength and he expects left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed and leg-spinner Noor Hossain to make an impact.Bangladesh take on Sri Lanka on August 11, South Africa the next day and Namibia on August 16. The team leaves for Australia on July 27.

Need to attack India spinners – Taylor

Ross Taylor remained positive ahead of the Bangalore Test and called for an adventurous approach to overcome New Zealand’s indecisive batting against the India spinners

Siddarth Ravindran in Bangalore30-Aug-2012

Ross Taylor made 2 and 7 in the Hyderabad Test•AFP

During his time at IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore, Ross Taylor quickly established himself as a fan favourite due to the ease and frequency with which his swipes cleared the mid-wicket boundary. Back in Bangalore as captain of a stuttering New Zealand outfit, he’ll have to play more in the manner he did at the pre-match press conference: with a straight bat. Nearly every question Taylor was asked dealt either with New Zealand’s dip in form or his own lack of big scores. All of which he answered with tact and optimism.Taylor was asked whether his side would be satisfied with a draw in Bangalore, a result most observers would call a reasonable achievement for the underdogs as they haven’t won a Test in India since 1988. Taylor acknowledged the challenge ahead but remained positive. “In a Test match, we go session by session. In the last three or four Tests, (we have realised) it only takes one bad session to ruin a Test. So we don’t want to look too far ahead. And, we’re still in the series, we have not won many Tests in India and we need to be brave and courageous in the way we go in this Test. We have nothing to lose.”Taylor called for a similarly adventurous approach to overcome New Zealand’s biggest weakness on this tour, the indecisive batting against the spinners. “(We have to) attack Ashwin and [Pragyan] Ojha and hopefully put pressure back on them. And when we attack them, there hopefully won’t be many men around the bat.”In the past 12 months, New Zealand’s misfiring batsmen have put up a 300-plus total only three times, including twice against also-rans Zimbabwe. It is the sort of record that prompted some stinging criticism from former New Zealand coach Mark Greatbatch, who earlier this week questioned whether New Zealand’s batsmen were taking on board what they were being taught. Taylor refused to be drawn into saying whether the comments were justified. “Our biggest critics are ourselves,” Taylor said. “Everyone is entitled to their opinions. I myself am very hard on myself. No matter what others say, I was very disappointed in the way I played.”Taylor has a massive role to play in New Zealand’s brittle middle-order, especially in the absence of Jesse Ryder and Daniel Vettori. The manner of his second-innings dismissal in Hyderabad – bowled after shouldering arms to an offspinner from Ashwin – will rankle, and adds to a dismal recent record, with only two Test centuries in his previous 30 innings stretching back to March 2010.Taylor held out hope of an upswing in his batting form. “Two hundreds in 30 innings is not great, but I feel I’m not far away from scoring runs. I’m working hard. When you score two centuries in 30 innings, sometimes you score two in two games. So you never know.”Besides winning over sceptical former players and critics in the media, Taylor has an added reason to perform in Bangalore. “Mackenzie has been to 2 games, I’ve scored 11, 0, 2 and 7,” he tweeted. “Thinks it’s time I showed my daughter that I can bat.”
