Sri Lanka batsmen put up improved show

Marchant de Lange joined the flood of exciting bowling talent coming into Tests this year, but he couldn’t prevent Sri Lanka from having their best day of the series

Twenty-one-year-old tearaway Marchant de Lange joined the flood of exciting bowling talent coming in to Tests this year, but he couldn’t prevent Sri Lanka from having their best day of the series in Durban. The oldest and youngest members in Sri Lanka’s squad, Thilan Samaraweera and debutant Dinesh Chandimal, added 111 in the second half of the day after de Lange troubled the visitors with a pacy spell.Tillakaratne Dilshan boldly set his floundering batting unit a challenge by choosing to bat on the usually fast-bowler friendly Kingsmead pitch. Several days of sunshine in the lead-up to the match, though, helped make the track flatter than normal, offering little swing for the quicks.Dilshan’s adventurousness continued when he batted – he attempted several flashy on-the-up drives, which he rarely middled though he also managed to avoid edging to the slip cordon. He and Tharanga Paranavitana saw off the challenge of a slightly out-of-sorts Dale Steyn and an improved Morne Morkel. But de Lange came on to transform the morning session.Bowling off a surprisingly short run-up for someone who regularly hits the mid-140s, the 1.9m de Lange delivers the ball with a high-arm action that gives a trampoline effect to several of his deliveries. That, coupled with his tight line outside off, troubled Sri Lanka: first Paranavitana attempted a drive to a full ball, only to nick to the keeper, before Kumar Sangakkara got a peach that moved a hint away and forced him to play at, feathering through to Mark Boucher to give de Lange his second wicket in three deliveries.Smart stats

Mahela Jayawardene became the first Sri Lankan and the ninth player overall to reach 10000 runs in Tests. He is also the fifth-fastest in terms of innings to reach the landmark. For a full stats analysis, click here.

Thilan Samaraweera made his eighth fifty-plus score outside the subcontinent. It is also his highest score in South Africa.

The 111-run stand between Samaraweera and Dinesh Chandimal is the highest sixth-wicket stand for Sri Lanka against South Africa and their sixth century partnership for any wicket in South Africa.

Marchant de Lange’s present bowling figures of 4 for 60 are sixth on the list of best performances on debut by a South African bowler since South Africa’s readmission.

Chandimal became the 12th Sri Lankan player to make a fifty-plus score on Test debut. He is also the first Sri Lankan batsman to do so against South Africa.

This is only the third 250-plus score for Sri Lanka in their last 11 innings in South Africa. Their highest score in South Africa is 323 in Centurion in 2002.

Dale Steyn bowled 19 overs in the innings without picking up a single wicket. This is second on the list of most overs bowled by Steyn in an innings without success.

Fears of a familiar Sri Lankan capitulation were eased as Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene set about rebuilding the innings. Dilshan’s cavalier strokes started to come off, including a controlled pull off Steyn for four, and he also capitalised on some freebies from Imran Tahir. Jayawardene got the single he needed to become the first Sri Lankan to 10,000 Test runs and looked assured in the middle. One of the highlights of his innings was a flat six over square leg, off a short ball down the leg side from Tahir.Dilshan was also given a hit-me ball by Tahir: a knee-high full toss outside leg stump. Dilshan, instead of taking advantage, slapped it straight to deep-backward square leg to end his innings on 47 and raise more questions about the captain’s shot-selection. Jayawardene and Samaraweera struck a flurry of boundaries to take Sri Lanka to lunch without further damage. Soon after the break, though, Morkel was finally rewarded for his probing bowling, as he got one to swerve in and crash into Jayawardene’s off stump. For the fourth time in the day, Sri Lanka put on a promising partnership which ended before reaching 50. Samaraweera and Angelo Mathews picked off regular boundaries, some convincing, like a pull by Mathews off Steyn, and some unconvincing, like Samaraweera’s streaky four to third man as he lifted his bat late. A gentle push by Mathews past mid-off for four brought up Sri Lanka’s 150 before drinks, but just as the batsmen looked comfortable, a full toss did the job for South Africa again. de Lange was the beneficiary this time as Mathews punched it right back at the bowler.Samaraweera dug in after that, but Chandimal didn’t hold back. His first Test runs came off a cross-batted swat down the ground for four, and a volley of boundaries took him to 24 off 26. It wasn’t all middle-of-the-bat stuff, though. He miscued one straight over the in-field and then nearly holed out in the final over before tea, as de Lange couldn’t latch on to a mis-hit at mid-on.The final session was almost all Sri Lanka as the partnership extended beyond 100. Samaraweera had his escapes against Tahir – a wrong no-ball call for overstepping on a delivery that resulted in a caught-and-bowled, Mark Boucher missed a stumping after the ball spun and kicked past the batsman and an edge landed just short of first slip – but he was more enterprising as well, lofting Tahir for boundaries down the ground soon after his half-century.Chandimal was more controlled, preferring the singles though there were the occasional touches of audacity as well. A Steyn delivery was dabbed late to third man for four, Tahir was slogged to midwicket before a chop past point four brought up a half-century which rounded off a great day for debutants. The light was fading and close of play was nearing when, yet again, South Africa were gift-wrapped a wicket. Morkel sent one short and well wide of offstump which Chandimal swished at without moving his feet, giving Boucher his third catch of the day. Samaraweera struggled with cramps and a testing spell from Steyn but remained on course for his first century outside Sri Lanka in nearly two years.

Saurashtra sense win after another 18 tumble

A round-up of the second day’s play of the seventh round of matches of the Ranji Trophy Elite, 2011-12

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Dec-2011

Dinesh Karthik made his second consecutive century to put Tamil Nadu in front•K Sivaraman

Group AFor the second day in a row, eighteen wickets fell at the Karnail Singh Stadium in Delhi. With two more days to go, Saurashtra brightened their hopes for a knockout berth by setting a target of 247 and then reducing Railways to 97 for 6.Railways, reeling overnight at 71 for 8, could only add a further ten runs in their first-innings. Subsequently Saurashtra, sitting on a comfortable lead of 94, failed for the second time in succession as they mustered a meagre 152, but the target set seemed to be enough going into the third day. With the exception of Ravindra Jadeja, who played late to top score with 45, the visitors showed the same lack of application as that of the Railways’ batsmen. Luckily it did not hurt Saurashtra so much as Kamlesh Makvana ripped apart the Railways’ batting order in their second innings with his fastish offbreaks, which fetched him his fifth five-for in first-class cricket. There was not much hope for Railways when senior batsmen like Sanjay Bangar and Shivakant Shukla gave away their wickets by charging out to Makvana. The Railways coach Abhay Sharma, however, didn’t blame the nature of the pitch for the slew of wickets. “Some of our batsmen played bad shots. I don’t think the curator is responsible in any way. When you have a three-day gap between two matches, a curator could have hardly done anything,” Sharma said. “In northern India, it’s difficult to water the pitch as it might remain wet and also you can’t just use the roller on a dry pitch.”Orissa were staring at a big first-innings deficit as they ended on 76 for 6 in reply to Rajasthan’s 423 in Jaipur. Robin Bist’s unbeaten 127 and Puneet Yadav’s 63 were instrumental in Rajasthan getting to an imposing score. The pair added 124 for the fifth wicket before Yadav was caught behind by Alok Mangaraj. The 24-year-old Bist, originally from Delhi, continued till he ran out of partners, hitting 16 fours in his knock. This is his fourth century in five matches for Bist, who at 829 runs is the top run-maker of season so far. Basanth Mohanty finished with 4 for 104.Rajasthan’s Pankaj Singh then made early inroads with the ball before Sumit Mathur, instrumental in Rajasthan’s victory against Saurashtra last week, took three wickets in five overs to leave the visitors in trouble. With Orissa still adrift by 347 runs, the defending champions would like the enforce the follow-on and try and go for an innings victory to get the bonus points and keep alive the chance of a knockout berth for second year in a row. If they do manage to do that, Rajasthan would have to thank Bist a lot. “This has been my best season in Ranji Trophy. Before this season, I had just one Ranji century. Now, I have five,” Bist told the at the end of the second day’s play.Wasim Jaffer became the highest run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy and, along with the belligerent Suryakumar Yadav, steered Mumbai past Punjab’s first-innings total during a typically elegant knock. Punjab toiled all day but were blunted by Mumbai’s ultra-defensive approach in the first session, and later by Jaffer’s and Yadav’s aggression. With Saurashtra and Rajasthan in strong positions in their games, Punjab’s chances of making the quarter-finals were slim. Read the full report here. The second day’s play in Shimoga followed the course of the first, as Uttar Pradesh mirrored Karnataka’s batting effort to finish 39 runs short of the first-innings lead, with four wickets standing. Like their Karnataka counterparts on day one, UP built a solid base in the morning, only to lose wickets in a clump in the lead-up to tea. Like Stuart Binny on the first day, Mohammad Kaif battled through the slump, before stalling it with a dogged seventh-wicket stand. Read the full report here.Group BTamil Nadu strengthened their position against Madhya Pradesh in Chennai, with Dinesh Karthik scoring 156 – his second century in as many games – to take the team to 486. The hosts then consolidated their position by sending the vistors’ top order comprising Naman Ojha, Mohnish Mishra and Devendra Bundela – essentially the MP batting’s engine-room – back to the dressing room in no time.Earlier Karthik was bold in his strokeplay, despite having only the tail for support. Yo Mahesh, M Rangarajan and L Balaji all frustrated the MP bowlers, while Karthik went from strength to strength. After the debuant Amarjeet Singh failed to latch on a hard-hit return catch when Karthik was on 89, the former Tamil Nadu captain progressed to make 156. For MP, Ishwar Pandey finished with 4 for 123 off nearly 40 overs. Zafar Ali, the MP opener, witnessed three partners depart before stumps, leaving plenty for the visitors to do on the third day to match TN’s score.Gritty half-centuries from Sourav Ganguly and Anustup Majumdar put Bengal well on course to take a first-innings lead against Baroda at the Moti Bagh Stadium in Vadodara. It was an eventful day for Ganguly who started the morning by wrapping up the Baroda innings while he finished with figures of 3 for 1. But Bengal were in for a rude jolt when they were wobbling at 98 for 4, which included the wicket of Manoj Tiwary, who had scored a century in each of his previous three matches. Bengal lost their opener Jayojit Basu to the left-arm seamer Gagandeep Singh, before Firdaush Bhaja had Arindam Das caught in the slips. Shreevats Goswami’s boundary-filled 38 came to an end when he nicked Gagandeep to the keeper. Gagandeep struck again when he had Manoj Tiwary caught at cover.Luckily Ganguly found a stable partner in Majumdar and the paired added vital 93 runs for the fifth wicket before the former Indian captain retired hurt due a left hamstring pull. Till then, Ganguly had 60 runs to his credit including nine fours. Majumdar, who ended the day unbeaten on 71, added a further 73 with Laxmi Shukla before stumps.Gujarat just about managed to take a slender first-innings lead of 21 runs against Haryana in Surat. Resuming on 46 for 1, the Gujarat top order showed an appalling lack of discipline and application, with no one managing even a half century. Luckily for the team, Pratharesh Parmar and Manprit Juneja showed some resistance, adding 63 for the fifth wicket, to help Gujarat to match Haryana’s score. For Haryana the job was done by India legspinner Amit Mishra and the debutant offspinner Jayant Yadav, as the pair took three wickets apiece to peg the hosts back. The other debutant, Mohit Sharma, took two wickets.Haryana erased the deficit of 21 by ending the day on a healthy 61 for no loss. If Gujarat lose this match, they would be relegated to the Plate division. And with the pitch aiding the spinners, a result seems likely. “The match is wide open and any target above 250-275 is going to be difficult to chase in the fourth innings on this ground with the wicket taking spin,” Jayendra Saigal, the Gujarat coach, said. “Our batsmen did not do justice to their talent today.”

Northamptonshire call off South Africa trip

Northamptonshire have decided to cancel their pre-season trip to South Africa, due in part to “challenging economic conditions”, despite reporting a £22,000 profit for 2011

Northamptonshire have decided to cancel their pre-season trip to South Africa, due in part to “challenging economic conditions”, despite reporting a £22,000 profit for 2011. Chief executive David Smith said that with several of the county’s players wintering abroad, the proposed training camp was not necessary. The small surplus represented a turnaround from 2010, when Northants registered a £32,000 loss. Despite that, the county experienced a slight fall in turnover for the financial year up to 30 September 2011, as the wider economic climate affected corporate spending and advertising. Counties are braced for a difficult 2012 in which they will have to compete for attention with the London Olympics and football’s European Championship, alongside the usual distractions.”Overall the club is pleased with the progress made during the year and I believe we are well placed to benefit from the investments made,” Smith said. “On the cricket front, many of our players at various different stages this winter have enjoyed cricket abroad … and many more of our younger players have also had spells of cricket out of the country, so we feel we will be very well prepared for our first four-day Championship match of the season on April 5.””With this in mind and with the current challenging economical trading conditions we recently made the decision that the playing staff would not be spending two weeks in South Africa as previously planned, but would instead, along with a number of other first-class counties, prepare for the coming season in home conditions.”Northamptonshire were helped by receiving a full grant payment from the ECB for 2011, following a facilities audit of Wantage Road. The county said it is still hoping to attract further outside investment in order to fund the acquisition of a left-arm spinner for the coming season.

Jacques Rudolph, the South Africa batsman, will join Surrey as their overseas player for the start of the 2012 county season. He will provide cover for Murali Kartik, who will miss the first few weeks of the campaign due to his IPL involvement.Rudolph, 30, was Yorkshire’s overseas player last season and has previously played for the county as a Kolpak signing. He won a Test recall over the winter after scoring heavily in South African domestic cricket. Rudolph has received a no objection certificate to represent Surrey and will provide Rory Hamilton-Brown’s youthful side with plenty of experience on their return to Division One of the championship.”Signing a player of Jacques Rudolph’s undoubted capabilities and experience is a great boost to our side at the start of the campaign,” Surrey team director Chris Adams said. “With such a heavy first-class schedule early in the season it will be a huge advantage to have a world-class opening batsman available to us. I look forward to welcoming Jacques to Surrey in early April.”Primarily an opener, Rudolph averaged 52.20 in 68 appearances for Yorkshire and has scored more than 15,000 first-class runs in his career. He returned to the South Africa side last November after a five-year absence, playing in the series against Australia and Sri Lanka, bringing his Test record to 2,238 runs at 35.52 from 40 matches.Kartik is expected to return to the side towards the end of May after his IPL involvement with Pune Warriors. Surrey have also signed Australia bowler Dirk Nannes as their second overseas player for their Friends Life t20 campaign.
