Leeds given potential huge Bamford boost

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford could be fit for the final two Premier League games of the season despite initial fears he would not return this campaign.

The Lowdown: Bamford’s torrid season

The 28-year-old was arguably the Whites’ star man last season, scoring 17 league goals, but things have panned out very differently this time around.

Bamford has been hampered by injury problems throughout the campaign, being limited to just seven league starts, which has played a part in the Whites’ struggles.

The striker is currently out with a foot injury which was initially expected to make him miss the rest of the campaign, but Jesse Marsch has revealed he could now miss just the next three weeks.

The Latest: Hay shares good news

Providing his thoughts in a Q&A for The Athletic on Monday ahead of Leeds’ trip to Crystal Palace, Phil Hay claimed that Bamford could return for the last two league games of the season, which are at home to Brighton and away to Brentford.

The journalist shared a prospective return date from the Whites manager which essentially means missing the next three weeks, claiming:

“Still no Patrick Bamford [v Palace] but Jesse Marsch thinks he might make it back for the last two games of the season.”

The Verdict: Could be massive for Leeds

This is a potentially huge boost for Leeds, as they find themselves in danger of getting sucked back into a relegation battle between themselves, Everton and Burnley.

Bamford’s finishing ability means that just one chance could be needed in one of those final two matches, should Marsch’s side still not be safe at that point.

In many ways, the hope is that Leeds have avoided relegation by then and Bamford doesn’t need to be risked, but having him in contention would feel significant, providing the Whites with proven Premier League firepower.

Leeds target Aaronson stars for Salzburg

Leeds United have been heavily linked with Red Bull Salzburg star Brenden Aaronson in 2022, and his performance on Sunday will certainly have caught Victor Orta’s eye.

This forms part of our Transfer Watch series, where we react to a performance from a current transfer target.

The Lowdown: Leeds hoping to wrap up Aaronson deal

Aaronson has been the Whites’ main target this year after the club made two bids for the USA international in the January window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-42/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As we know, the attacking midfielder remained in Austria with Salzburg but is still on Leeds’ radar ahead of Jesse Marsch’s first full season in charge at Elland Road.

Aaronson made 25 appearances under Marsch last season and reports have suggested that the Whites are hoping to wrap up a move for the 21-year-old this summer.

The Latest: Impressive display from Aaronson

Salzburg clinched a ninth straight Austrian Bundesliga title on Sunday following a 5-0 win over Austria Vienna. Aaronson returned to action after a six-week layoff with a knee problem and impressed, ending with a SofaScore match rating of 7.3/10.

The attacking midfielder scored a penalty and registered three key passes, one of which led to a big chance.

He only had 30 touches of the ball during his 64-minute display but he starred upon his return and even showed off his pace after the final whistle when looking to dodge a beer shower from his team-mates.

The Verdict: Sign him

Should they stay in the Premier League, Leeds should be looking to wrap up a move for Aaronson as soon as possible.

Marsch doesn’t have an out-and-out attacking midfielder to choose from at Elland Road, making the 21-year-old’s arrival even more crucial.

Described as a player with a ‘monster mentality’ by Salzburg manager Matthias Jaissle, Aaronson has now contributed to 28 goals in 61 games for the Austrian champions, and with an impressive record under Marsch already, he could slot in perfectly at Elland Road.

Afridi focussing on the future

Pakistan limited-overs captain Shahid Afridi is hoping his side can put the troubles of the recent England tour behind them

Shahid Afridi is hoping Pakistan can find on-field form to move on from their off-field traumas•AFP

Pakistan limited-overs captain Shahid Afridi has said he hopes his side can put the troubles of the recent England tour behind them as they begin their build-up to next year’s World Cup.Pakistan lost both the Test and one-day series to England, and three of their players – former captain Salman Butt and fast-bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir – were suspended by the ICC following their alleged involvement in ‘spot-fixing’ during the last Test at Lord’s.They now head out to UAE to meet South Africa for two Twenty20 games before a five-match ODI series which starts in November. A two-match Test series follows before the team sets off for New Zealand. Afridi feels his side has the talent to win the limited-overs series and hopes the upcoming World Cup can galvanize a side that has been beset by off-field troubles.”It’s all about confidence. We can improve our World Cup chances by boosting our confidence and should do that by winning matches against South Africa and later against New Zealand,” he said. “We have to forget what happened during the tour of England. What the team desperately needs is some good results and I’m sure that if we play to our potential we can do that against South Africa.”Shorn of the services of the suspended players, Afridi refused to condemn the trio and insisted that his spinners could prove to be Pakistan’s biggest weapon. “We are going to miss the three because they are our key players,” he said.”But we can’t just sit back and cry over it. We have to focus on the upcoming assignments and thankfully, we still have several match-winners in our side. Spinners will certainly be playing the major role in UAE, the wickets there should give them a lot of assistance.”

Brett Lee and Phillip Hughes set up a comfortable victory for New South Wales, who cruised past Tasmania’s 8 for 189 in the regional centre of Burnie. Lee collected 3 for 51 to help restrict the Tigers, who are the competition leaders, and Hughes compiled an unbeaten 80 as the Blues eased to their target with 23 balls remaining, to move to second spot on the table. It was a strong all-round effort from the visitors, who also took the extra point available at the halfway mark, when they had scored 1 for 86 to Tasmania’s 2 for 66. The Tigers found the going tough having been sent in and Ed Cowan’s 58 was the only score of note against a strong attack led by Lee, who leads the Ryobi Cup wicket tally with 14.David Warner made 44 for New South Wales and Steven Smith’s 32 helped the visitors to their triumph, which was anchored by the opener Hughes, who is hoping to remind the Australian selectors of his talent. Lee is also keen to force his way back in to the national team for the one-day games against England and the World Cup early next year.”I want to play for Australia. I’m ready, it’s as simple as that,” Lee told AAP after the victory. “I’m back bowling fast, I’m back bowling well and I’m taking wickets.”

Phillips urges Bruce to overhaul West Brom amid Hourihane links

Sky Sports pundit Kevin Phillips has backed West Brom for a total squad overhaul during the upcoming transfer window, amid reports of the club being interested in a summer move for Aston Villa’s Conor Hourihane.

The Lowdown: Hourihane news

The 31-year-old Hourihane, who is currently out on a season-long loan at Sheffield United from the Midlands outfit, was just last week linked with a potential switch to the Albion at the end of the campaign.

However, the former Baggies striker Phillips has admitted that he believes Steve Bruce should be targeting more youthful options rather than experienced veterans if the club have aspirations of making a return to the top flight anytime soon, essentially calling for a full rebuild at the Hawthorns.

The Latest: Reshuffle on the cards

Giving his thoughts on the link to Hourihane in an interview with West Brom News, Phillips said: “Again, he’s a midfielder who can score goals.

“I would understand why you would go for those types of players, but I think if you bring too many into the squad, I think West Brom need to have an overhaul.

“They have got some good players there, but I think bringing more experience in, might not be the way forward, but bringing youth, energy and pace in the squad as well as those who know the league.

“I think it’s right to get the balance right.”

The Verdict: Play-off ambitions

The midfielder has made 29 appearances in all competitions for the Blades this season, providing five goal contributions during that time, via Transfermarkt.

Despite having plenty of experience in the second-tier of English football, Hourihane, who was once hailed a “quality” player by his former teammate Jack Grealish, isn’t the profile of player that the Baggies should be looking at bringing in, especially considering the fact that their campaign has ended in disappointment, having almost finished as a mid-table side.

Bruce will no doubt want to make some wholesale changes to his squad ahead of the start of the 2022/23 term, but he has to ensure that whichever new signings he brings in have the potential to help reach the play-off places and kick on for a long-term future at the club.

In other news… West Brom are reportedly eyeing a summer move for a Championship duo.
