Pakistan’s former captain, Ramiz Raja, and the former coach, Geoff Lawson, have both spoken out in defence of Mohammad Amir

Former Pakistan captain, Ramiz Raja, and the former coach, Geoff Lawson, have both spoken out in defence of Mohammad Amir, Pakistan’s 18-year-old fast bowler whose alleged involvement in the Lord’s spot-fixing scandal is threatening to destroy his burgeoning career.Amir was a revelation during the recent four-Test series against England, in which he collected 19 wickets at 18.36 and proved unplayable at times in helpful swinging conditions. He picked up consecutive five-wicket hauls in the final two Tests, including a career-best 6 for 84 in England’s only innings at Lord’s.However, on the eve of the final day of the series, he was one of four players – along with his captain Salman Butt and fellow new-ball bowler Mohammad Asif – to be named by The News of the World in an alleged scam involving bowling no-balls to order, a situation that has led many commentators, including England’s former captain, Michael Vaughan, to call for a life ban. However, Ramiz and Lawson both expressed sympathy for Amir, and believed the greater blame lay with the men who had led him astray so early in his career. “To see an 18-year old boy being dragged into the controversy is the worse part,” Ramiz told Cricinfo. “He had the world, everyone was raving about the talent and praising him. It is such a sad moment in cricket.”Amir comes from a humble background,” Ramiz said. “He is 18, with an impressionable mind, and if he has been keeping bad company, it’s possible he could have been drawn [into wrongdoing]. But if that’s the case, then the guys who got him in should be put behind bars because they’ve spoilt a grand career. They’ve infiltrated and spoilt a young mind, and it’s such a shocking state of affairs.”Lawson, who coached Pakistan for 15 months between July 2007 and October 2008, said: “For me, it would be a great tragedy if a young man such as Amir, a shining light of hope, has been led astray.” But he also added that Pakistan’s socio-economic situation needed to be taken into account before rushing in to judge the alleged actions of its cricketers.”We must remember that we are judging these guys by the standards of our own country, when their situations are vastly different,” Lawson told The Age in Melbourne. “The first time I met Mohammad Amir was when he was 16, coming to an Under-19s camp. He comes from a small village near the Swat valley and was delayed by three hours because the Taliban had closed the highway. That doesn’t happen in this country.””One thing that struck me about Amir was his constant smile, his zest for the game,” he said. “That has not changed. I will never condone any form of fixing, but we should consider that a cricketer might not be thinking of personal gain but of getting money to buy a generator for his village because they don’t have electricity.”I don’t think Pakistan should be banished, we have seen it survive some incredible on and off-field turmoil,” Lawson said. “But I will say that the present Pakistan administration cannot escape some of the blame for this. What they need right now is positive leadership and they don’t have it.”When I was there the board did not have people with vested interests, they were business people who treated people fairly, remunerated the players well. The first-class players were looked after and paid well and it made a difference. The [current] Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt is not a leader, he should not have the job, he is incapable.”
Tottenham Hotspur will have to pay Torino a fee of €50m (£41m) in order to bring Gleison Bremer to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.
What’s the talk?
That’s according to a report by Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), who claim that, due to the increasing interest in the 25-year-old’s services, the Serie A side have now doubled the Brazilian’s asking price – with reports earlier this month suggesting the centre-back would cost around €25m (£21m) this summer.
[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-martinez-dybala-spence-conte-2” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]
The report goes on to state that Tottenham – who are believed to have already made contact with Torino regarding a deal for Bremer – have been joined in the race for the defender by the likes of Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Leicester City, Newcastle United and Everton, with Gazzetta going on to rather hyperbolically claim that “everyone wants him.”
Spurs must move
While £41m is undoubtedly a great deal of money to pay for a player who is yet to make 100 league appearances since his €5m (£4.1m) move to Italy in 2018, considering how impressive Bremer has been for Torino this season, it would certainly appear a figure well worth paying for Antonio Conte and Tottenham.
Indeed, over his 30 Serie A appearances in the current campaign, the £27m-rated centre-back has been colossal in Ivan Juric’s defence, helping the Granata keep eight clean sheets, as well as making an average of 3.4 interceptions – the most of any player in the league – 1.4 tackles, four clearances and winning 6.6 duels per game.
The £53k-per-week defender has also impressed in an attacking capacity, scoring three goals and providing one assist, in addition to completing an average of 36.5 passes, 2.8 long balls, 0.9 chipped passes and 0.5 dribbles per fixture.
These metrics have seen the 6’2 Brazilian who journalist Ryan Taylor dubbed both “unbelievable” and “faultless” average a quite extraordinary SofaScore match rating of 7.18, ranking him as the fourth-best defender in the Italian top flight.
As such, it is clear for all to see that Bremer would make a fantastic addition to Conte’s current options in defence – not to mention a big coup for Spurs, considering the level of interest in the centre-back’s services – leading us to believe that the Italian must do all he can to convince both Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici to pay the £41m in order to land the 25-year-old this summer.

Santos e Corinthians fizeram um clássico eletrizante neste domingo no Pacaembu.

Sorte do Timão.

Manchester United will take on Arsenal this afternoon, and Ralf Rangnick has confirmed a huge triple boost to the team.
What’s the latest?
The Red Devils boss took to his pre-match press conference to reveal that Cristiano Ronaldo, Scott McTominay and Raphael Varane will be available for selection in the important clash at The Emirates this afternoon.
Rangnick told the press (via Manchester Evening News): “Scott McTominay will be back and fit to play, he has been training with us and he will train today, he will be available for the game, the same is true with Raphael Varane. Cristiano Ronaldo is available again, he’s been training with us.”
Supporters will be buzzing
This game against Arsenal is one of Man United’s last chances to put themselves in a position to secure Champions League football next season by securing a spot inside the top four, so supporters will be buzzing that three key players are returning.
Ronaldo’s return will be warmly welcomed by supporters, with the Portuguese striker the current top goalscorer for the club and an inevitable force within the struggling side. His impact this season, scoring 21 goals and contributing three assists, has been crucial.
Varane has struggled with fitness throughout his first season at Old Trafford, making 18 appearances in the Premier League so far, but there is no doubt his influence in the back-line alongside Harry Maguire will be valued against Arsenal today. And, with his experience, he could cause all sorts of problems for their attackers.
Finally, McTominay will return to action today following a foot injury which will be a relief to Rangnick following Pogba’s injury sustained at Anfield leaving him sidelined indefinitely, it will be highly likely due to the injury problems in midfield that he will be instantly reinstated into the starting eleven today.
If Man United can secure all three points at The Emirates, they can match Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur for points in the Premier League table before Spurs kick-off against Brentford this evening. And, if Antonio Conte’s side do go on to fall to defeat away from home, it would put Rangnick and his team in a great position to snatch the top-four spot.

Brett Lee is close to securing a Twenty20 deal with Wellington as he aims to play as much cricket as possible in the lead-up to the World Cup. Lee’s manager Neil Maxwell believes the fast man would be available for six or seven of Wellington’s ten Twenty20 games if the agreement is confirmed.New Zealand’s domestic Twenty20 competition is played throughout December, which means Lee would need to juggle his commitments, being required for limited-overs games with New South Wales during that period. Maxwell said all that was left was to get the all-clear from Cricket New South Wales.”We’ve been given the okay by Cricket Australia in principle, so we’ll check with Cricket New South Wales, which I don’t think will be a problem,” Maxwell told the . “We’re just waiting to get something in writing from them. We’ve been speaking with Gavin Larsen [the Cricket Wellington CEO], who is obviously keen and we just want to lock that away in the next week or so.”Lee has had an injury-plagued year, including elbow surgery last December, and he has not played for Australia since October last year. He has not played any high-level cricket since a brief IPL stint in April, and he hopes to be in the mix for Australia’s World Cup defence early next year.”He netted last night,” Maxwell said. “He’s rolling his arm over comfortably about 130kph without too much effort, he reckons, so he’ll start cranking it up now.”If Lee signs with Wellington, where the coach is his former New South Wales team-mate Anthony Stuart, he could be joined in New Zealand by some Australian colleagues. Shaun Tait is believed to close to signing with Canterbury, while Northern Districts are reportedly chasing the batsman David Warner.
