Sachin Tendulkar led India’s attempt to stay alive in the series on an attritional day at the SSC, battling his way, supported by VVS Laxman and Suresh Raina, to a determined century that took India closer to avoiding the follow-on. This, after Sri Lanka’s spinners brought the Test back to life just when it seemed the bat would dominate for the third successive day.The conditions on Day 3 were still batsman-friendly but the Sri Lankan bowlers varied their pace and lengths with greater skill than their Indian counterparts to create chances. However, India survived a couple of nervy moments that helped turn the third day, if only slightly, in their favour. When on 29, Tendulkar attempted to upper-cut Dilhara Fernando and was dropped by wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene. And an appeal against Raina was turned down in the final session when he was struck on the pads by a straighter delivery from Tillakaratne Dilshan; replays suggested the ball would have gone on to hit leg.Charged, yet again, with the responsibility of reviving the Indian innings, Tendulkar batted with assuredness amid the pressure. The spinners didn’t extract much turn though they did generate good bounce, but Tendulkar adapted well, opting to deal with the length deliveries outside off with caution while treating the ones that were pitched short harshly. He struck Suraj Randiv for eight boundaries through the off side – point, cover and past slip – and comfortably picked off deliveries bowled on his pads for a couple more. The one time he did step out to the spinners was when he brought up his half-century, a clean strike over long-on.Tendulkar played the ball late on a slowish track, and targeted Randiv while approaching his century, reaching the landmark, his 48th in Tests, with a sweep through square leg. He also ensured a steady flow of singles with Raina, whose strokeplay masked the nerves of a batsman making his first Test appearance.Smart stats

Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten 108 is his 48th Test hundred, and his 94th in all international cricket. It’s his fifth Test century in Sri Lanka; among overseas countries, only in Australia has he scored more hundreds (six).

Suresh Raina is the second Indian batsman to score more than 50 in his debut Test this year – S Badrinath had scored 56 against South Africa in Nagpur. Virender Sehwag is the only other Indian to achieve this feat since 2000.

Sehwag became only the third batsman to be dismissed stumped on 99. It’s also the eighth instance of an Indian being dismissed for 99.

The 165-run stand between Sehwag and Murali Vijay is the fourth instance of a century stand for the first wicket by India in Sri Lanka. It fell six runs short of equalling the record, between Navjot Siddhu and Manoj Prabhakar, in 1993.

Raina was uncertain early on against the round-the-wicket line bowled by the two spinners, failing to pick a legspinner from Mendis and leaving a straighter one from Randiv. But, unlike Tendulkar, it was against the length deliveries that he was most comfortable. He stepped out to both spinners to drive them through mid-on, and struck Dammika Prasad for consecutive boundaries. He was equally solid in defence, offering the full face, and eased towards his maiden half-century with a couple of delicious cover drives off the spinners.Tendulkar began India’s recovery after Virender Sehwag’s swipe on 99 triggered a rush of wickets that undermined a strong start. Facing Randiv’s first delivery of the day, Sehwag stepped out and swung hard towards cow corner, missed and was stumped to become the offspinner’s maiden Test victim. The wickets that followed were a consequence of some crafty bowling from the spinning pair. Mendis snared opener M Vijay with a googly that he failed to pick after erroneously opting to play the length delivery off the back foot. Rahul Dravid was trapped in front with a ball that skidded on before Laxman joined Tendulkar to rebuild the innings.Laxman was edgy during his stay and was troubled by Randiv as he played inside the line while expecting more turn. He got the leading edge twice and edged one to slip on the bounce. He appeared far more comfortable against Mendis, capitalising with a couple of boundaries when he was generous enough to stray on the pads. But his concentration wavered and he didn’t read Mendis’ wrong ‘un and was struck in front of leg stump. His wicket at the stroke of tea shifted a see-saw day Sri Lanka’s way, but Tendulkar and Raina, with a bit of fortune, put India’s survival plans back on track.

Celtic: Devlin drops set piece claim

Kieran Devlin has dropped a worrying claim regarding Celtic’s defending from set pieces.

What’s been said?

In recent comments made after the Bhoys’ 3-2 win over Dundee on Saturday, The Athletic journalist stated his belief that, for all Celtic’s good work in dominating possession of the ball, should the club fail to improve their defending from dead-ball scenarios, it could well cost the club their shot at reclaiming their Premiership crown this season.

Speaking about the Hoops’ defending from set-pieces, Devlin said: “So often they’ll be in complete control only for them to concede from a set piece. Dundee only created an xG of 0.14 from open play, but that doesn’t matter when you’re that sloppy at defensive set-pieces. Could cost them crucial points with the title race this close.”

Chink in the armour

After looking at the statistics, Devlin’s claim that Celtic simply must improve upon their defending from deal ball scenarios would very much appear to be bang on the money.

Indeed, over the Bhoys’ 27 Premiership appearances so far this season, Ange Postecoglou’s side have shipped a mere 17 goals – a rate of just 0.6 goals conceded per game.

However, when breaking these 17 goals against down, one has come from a penalty, one has come from a counter-attack, six have come from open play and a whopping nine have come from a set play – meaning that 53% of the goals the Hoops have conceded in the league have come from a dead ball scenario.

As such, despite the fact that Celtic often dominate possession of the ball – with the Bhoys averaging a 69.9% share of the ball over their 27 Premiership fixtures so far this term – as well as conceding an average of just 0.89 xGA per game, it would appear that there is very much a chink in the Bhoys’ armour.

It’s a flaw that Postecoglou simply must address if he is to give his side the best possible chance of lifting the Premiership trophy come the end of the campaign.

Trezeguet already impressing on loan

Aston Villa winger Trezeguet has started life on loan at Turkish outfit Istanbul Basaksehir excellently after joining the Super Lig outfit for the remainder of the campaign last month.

Following a 2-0 debut victory over Gaziantep FK, in which the 27-year-old recorded an assist, the Egyptian scored twice at Caykur Rizespor on Friday night as Basaksehir won 2-0 again.

It has taken longer than usually expected for Trezeguet to start playing for his new side having reached the final of the African Cup on Nations with his native Egypt as they lost on penalties.

Already, the winger has doubled his appearance tally in the league for Villa this campaign, having returned from a knee injury with a ten-minute cameo in the 2-1 defeat at Brentford in early January.

Trezeguet had been absent since early April after suffering the injury in the Villans’ 2-1 defeat away at Liverpool last season but it appeared as though new manager Steven Gerrard had little interest in using the Egyptian once he was deemed fit.

Moreover, in his ten-minute spell at the Brentford Community Stadium, the winger was noticed by those outside of either club’s fanbases, but for the wrong reasons, with an embarrassing dive going viral on social media.

Having joined the West Midlands club following their promotion back to the Premier League in 2019 for a fee reported to be around £8.75m from Turkish side Kasimpasa, the winger proved to be pivotal as the Villans scraped survival.

The 27-year-old scored six goals and assisted two in 34 league appearances in the 2019/20 campaign, with a brace against Crystal Palace and a goal against Arsenal making the difference in crucial victories for Dean Smith’s side.

Aston Villa journalist Gregg Evans also had plenty of praise for the winger, saying: “The amount of energy that Trezeguet puts in, it’s natural that he’s going to be tiring when it gets to like 65, 70, 75 minutes. [It’s] an incredible turnaround from that player as well, somebody who, admittedly I thought wasn’t cut out to be a Villa player, wasn’t cut out for the Premier League.”

However, the following campaign wasn’t as fruitful with the £9m-rated wide man netting twice in 21 Premier League matches with the knee injury putting an abrupt end to his season.

With the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Emi Buendia, Leon Bailey, and Bertrand Traore all above the 27-year-old in the pecking order, it’s unsurprising that Gerrard opted to send Trezeguet out on loan once passed fit. However, a strong end to the season in Istanbul could change the 41-year-old’s mind.

Villa are looking to progress as a club which will leave some players, particularly those signed in the first transfer window back in the Premier League, behind, with Matt Targett being a recent example.

The left-back had been a regular for Villa since joining from Southampton in 2019, but the signing of Lucas Digne meant that the Englishman instead opted to join Newcastle on loan as opposed to sitting on the bench.

It seems as though, for now at least, Trezeguet’s tenure at Villa Park is over, but it’s important for fans to remember the impact he made late in the 2019/20 campaign to ensure the Villans avoided an instant return to the Championship.

Kent took an early lead in the battle to avoid the Friends Provident t20 wooden spoon by securing a 12-run win over fellow South Group strugglers Gloucestershire at Canterbury. In a re-run of the 2007 Twenty20 final, Gladiators soon lost their way when chasing Kent’s par-for-the-course total of 165 to suffer their eighth defeat of the campaign and allow Kent a fourth win in what has been a modest campaign.Gloucestershire lost their way in the chase as early as the sixth delivery when William Porterfield turned a leg-stump ball from Azhar Mahmood straight to Joe Denly at deep square-leg. The visitors re-gained some composure in reaching 42 before Alex Redmond drove the first ball of the afternoon from left-arm seamer Ashley Shaw, who was making his home debut, straight to mid-off.Hamish Marshall, having been dropped on six, added only 11 more before heaving across the line at a straight one from Simon Cook. Legspinner Malinga Bandara then took two wickets in three balls to cut down the Gladiators in full stride. Chris Taylor edged an attempted drive to the keeper before top-scorer James Franklin was deceived in the flight and picked out James Hockley at long-on. He had made 40 from 33 balls.Chris Dent chanced his arm against that of Denly to be run out for six then Richard Dawson miscued a sweep to deep square leg to give Bandara final figures of 3 for 27.Steve Snell (21) had two stumps plucked out after missing with a leg-side smear against Amjad Khan then, in the penultimate over Jonathan Lewis (26) holed out to long-off and, with 14 needed off the last over, Khan cleaned up Kirby to secure the win with four balls to spare.Batting first having won the toss, Kent initially made good use of the same firm pitch that they had used for Friday’s clash with Hampshire. Spitfires had 32 on the board within five overs before captain Rob Key (11) edged an attempted clip over midwicket to be caught at short fine leg.Denly survived a chance at mid-on when on 10 and raced to 44 from 31 balls with four fours and a six before he drove firmly to long-on where has was superbly caught on the run by Hamish Marshall to make it 89 for 2.Geraint Jones (8) soon perished when he slog swept straight down the throat of the man at deep square leg, then Alex Blake (5) naively skied a cover drive straight into the hands of Porterfield at deep extra-cover.After that, only Hockley with 13 at a run-a-ball and Martin van Jaarsveld, who top-scored with 59 from 40 balls, reached double figures as Kent, from 105 for 2, slid away to post 165 at an asking rate of 8.25 an over.Van Jaarsveld timed the ball superbly to collect six fours and a six until he drove over a full-length ball from Franklin to lose his off stump. In the Kent carnage that followed, left-arm seamer David Payne bagged 3 for 25 and Lewis 2 for 26 as Kent lost seven wickets for 60 runs in the pursuit of late runs.

Spurs: Paul Robinson makes Winks exit claim

Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson has claimed that Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks could be forced out of the north London club in the summer.

The Lowdown: Winks’ lack of minutes

The 26-year-old has struggled for minutes in the Premier League under Antonio Conte following the deadline day arrival of Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus.

Whilst the homegrown midfielder maintained a string of games in the starting XI during the middle of the season, the Italian has reverted to using Winks as a substitute. As a result, the former England international has totalled just 17 minutes in the Lilywhites’ last six league matches.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Robinson’s claim on Winks…

Robinson, who regularly features as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes that Winks could see himself being forced out of Hotspur Way in the summer.

Speaking with Football Insider, he claimed: “Hojbjerg and Bentancur are the preferred partnership.

“You always worry about players adapting when they come to the Premier League but Bentancur has settled in brilliantly. He’s been an excellent signing. He demands a starting spot every week. It is him plus one and at the moment it is Hojbjerg.

“Winks has found it hard to get into the team. It looks like the time has come for him to move on. He needs to be playing every week given the stage he is at in his career. He needs a manager who will show him a bit of love and play him every week.

“Hojbjerg and Bentancur are the first choice right now. Hojbjerg has not been consistent this season but he is playing really well at the moment. Bentancur is the one setting the bar.”

The Verdict: Winks should move elsewhere

Hojbjerg and Bentancur have truly stapled themselves as the default options in Conte’s midfield, and with youngster Oliver Skipp now close to making his return to action, Winks could see himself fall even lower down the pecking order at Spurs.

This will come as a disappointment to Tottenham fans who were once excited at the youngster’s potential, given Mauricio Pochettino’s “amazing” appraisal of the player earlier in his career.

However, in the current circumstances, it seems that Winks’ time in north London could be coming to an end, so as Robinson has claimed, an early move in the summer could appear to be the best option for all parties involved.

Italy, Tanzania and Nepal register wins

A round-up of matches from the fifth day of the ICC World Cricket League Division Four

Cricinfo staff18-Aug-2010

Nepal bounced back from their depressing defeat against Tanzania with a sprightly showing against Argentina•International Cricket Council

USA suffered their first defeat of the tournament as a clinical bowling performance from Italy consigned them to a 51-run defeat in Medicina. Italy’s batsmen did not fare too well after winning the toss, but they found their saviours in Andy Northcote and Peter Petricola, who lifted them to what proved to be a match-winning score of 212.Wickets tumbled early with Hayden Patrizi and Nic Northcote managing just three runs in between them. That brought Andy and Petricola together, and the pair added a decisive 111 for the third wicket. Andy scored a 108-ball 72 before Muhammad Ghous got the better of him, and things went downhill for Italy thereafter. Petricola also missed his ton, falling 15 short to the impressive Lennox Cush who snared three wickets. The tail managed to lift Italy to 212, a score their bowlers comfortably defended.USA’s chase was wrong-footed early when their in-form batsman Sushil Nadkarni departed for a duck. Italy’s seamers never released the pressure and soon USA were 26 for 4. A battling 51 from Aditya Thyagarajan, and a couple of reasonable contributions from the tail took them past 150, but the result was never in doubt after the early damage.Petricola, who was adjudged Man of the Match, was pleased to put it past the USA. “It was great to beat the USA today, a side that is particularly strong. I felt today was real team effort by us all in the field and it felt particularly great to bounce back after our first game defeat at the hands of Nepal.”Our batting showed good strength and depth and I’m proud of the fact I managed to add a few runs to our final total today. I was also happy with how we performed as a side in the field, we kept our bowling tight and I was thrilled with my team-mates overall performance,” he said.Tanzania’s bowlers ensured that their side surged to their second win in two days, against Cayman Islands in Pianoro. It was a stop-start innings for Tanzania after they won the toss as batsmen either threw away solid starts or got out early. Four run-outs out of the nine wickets that fell added to the general chaos of the innings. Five batsmen managed to get past 29, but all of them succumbed for scores under 40, while the rest of the batsmen fell for single-digit scores. Still they managed to put 197 on the board, and their bowlers, fresh from a spirited defence of a poor score against Nepal, stuck to their task again.Khalil Rehmtullah was once again the hero, scalping 3 for 28, including two early wickets as Cayman Islands’ chase was stunted at the top. Saheed Mohamed and Ryan Bovell repaired the damage from 10 for 3 in a patient 80-run stand spanning nearly 20 overs, but just like the Tanzanian batsmen, they too chucked it after reaching 30s. Unfortunately for Cayman Islands, they did not have enough reserves to pick up the slack, and despite a stubborn 25 from Conroy Wright, they folded 43 short of Tanzania’s effort.Kassim Nasoro, leading the side today, was pleased that the side managed to pull off a win despite missing their regular captain. “I’m really proud of the way we played today. Having lost our captain Hamisi Abdallah this morning due to injury, we really came together as a side and our game plan paid off. Our bowlers kept things tight and the batsmen made a solid total that proved too hard for the Cayman Islanders to make, it feels great to have our second win of the tournament and hopefully our good run continues,” he said.Nepal put their forgettable outing against Tanzania behind them and trounced Argentina by eight wickets with a professional performance in Navile. Argentina’s innings, after electing to bat, never went into gear against a determined Nepal attack and, despite an attacking 83 off 73 balls from Alejandro Ferguson, they could only manage 193 in their 50 overs. The wickets were shared around, with Shakti Gauchan and Basanta Regmi picking two wickets in particularly niggardly spells.Mahesh Chhetri began Nepal’s chase in sedate fashion with a 60-ball 36, while his colleagues went after the bowling. His opening partner Anil Mandal struck 60 off 58 balls with seven fours and three sixes. After their exits, Pradeep Airee and captain Paras Khadka sealed the deal with a 92-run stand, with the latter on 53 off 40 balls when the winning runs were scored in the 33rd over.Man of the match Mandal was pleased that his side shrugged off the batting failures from the previous games. “I think we batted well compared to the previous two matches and I’m happy I was able to contribute to the team score. I felt we needed to see the new ball off first and once we’d settled in, I felt I could go back to my basic skills and hit the ball freely to put the runs on the board. I think we have to be even more focused tomorrow for the USA, they will come back stronger and we have to be ready to take on their bowling attack and ultimately claim victory,” he said.
