West Ham dealt blow on Brereton Diaz

West Ham United are interested in a deal to bring Ben Brereton Diaz to the London Stadium in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by ExWHUemployee, who revealed on a recent episode of The West Ham Way Podcast that David Moyes is interested in a deal to bring the Blackburn Rovers centre-forward in during the current transfer market.

However, the Hammers insider then went on to state that the Championship side are unlikely to want to part with the Chile international this month due to their lofty position in the second-tier standings – as selling the 22-year-old for a figure of around £20m would not be worth missing out on a shot at the Premier League.

On West Ham’s interest in Brereton Diaz, Ex said: “We like Diaz at Blackburn. I broke that [story] a month or so ago. [The fact that no move has materialised yet] doesn’t mean it wasn’t true, it just means that Blackburn – because they are right at the top of the Championship, having not been in the Premier League for years – why would they want to sell him at this point? You’ve got to factor that in.

“Getting up to the Premier League is worth more than £20m. If you get back into the Premier League the finances are huge. So these clubs will wait until the summer to see where they are before they make a decision on these players.”

Fans will be gutted

Considering just how impressive Brereton Diaz has been for Blackburn this season, in addition to the fact that West Ham are currently extremely short in depth at centre-forward, the news that the Hammers may not be able to get a deal over the line for the 22-year-old this month is sure to have left the London Stadium faithful gutted.

Indeed, over his 26 Championship appearances in the current campaign, the £9m-rated striker has been in remarkable form for Rovers, having already scored an astonishing 20 goals, registered one assist and created two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.8 shots and making 0.7 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £6.5k-per-week player who Tony Mowbray dubbed an “extraordinary” talent average a SofaScore match rating of 7.00, ranking him as Blackburn’s eighth-best performer in the second tier.

As such, with Moyes in desperate need of backup and competition for Michail Antonio in East London – with the injury-prone striker currently being the 58-year-old’s only option as an out and out centre-forward – a player who possesses the clear ability to find the back of the net such as Brereton Diaz would appear to be the perfect signing for the Scottish manager this month.

However, following Ex’s latest update, it would appear that, should Moyes indeed wish to pursue a deal for the 22-year-old, he will have to wait until the summer – something that will undoubtedly come as a gutting blow to the manager and his side.

Celtic closing in on Matt O’Riley deal

Tom Barclay has dropped an update on Celtic’s bid to secure a deal to bring Matt O’Riley to Parkhead in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

In a recent post on Twitter, The Sun journalist revealed that the Milton Keynes Dons central midfielder, who Celtic are reported to be closing in on a £1.5m deal for this month, has undergone a medical in England on Wednesday afternoon ahead of his proposed switch to Parkhead.

In his post, Barclay said: “Understand O’Riley doing his Celtic medical now down south.”

Postecoglou will be buzzing

Considering just how impressive O’Riley has been for MK Dons this season, in addition to the fact that Celtic recently missed out on the signing of fellow central midfielder Riley McGree, the news that a deal for the 21-year-old very much looks to be nearing completion is sure to have left Ange Postecoglou buzzing.

Indeed, over his 26 League One appearances in the current campaign, the £405k-rated man has been in exceptional form, scoring seven goals, registering five assists and creating seven big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.5 shots and making 2.1 key passes per game.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/?post_type=web-story&p=664142″ title=”Check out the latest Celtic news!”]

The former England U18 international has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 1.5 interceptions, two tackles, 48.2 passes, one clearance and winning 4.6 duels per fixture.

These returns have seen the player who Russell Martin dubbed a “fantastic” talent average a remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.37, not only ranking him as Liam Manning’s second-best performer in the league but also as the joint seventh-best player in the division as a whole.

Furthermore, considering O’Riley’s impressive positional versatility – being comfortable operating from defensive, central and attacking midfield – as well as his clear eye for goal and creativity in the final third, the 21-year-old would very much appear to be a player in the same mould as Celtic’s Reo Hatate – with the prospect of the MK Dons man lining up alongside the Japan international in the middle of the park undoubtedly being an extremely exciting one for the Parkhead faithful.

As such, the news that O’Riley looks to be extremely close to sealing a move to Glasgow is certainly extremely positive for everyone involved with the Bhoys.

Gul will go only if he is 100% fit – Mohsin Khan

Pakistan’s preparations for the ICC World Twenty20 received a boost in Lahore, where Umar Gul bowled his first overs in a week as he began his recovery from an injury

Pakistan’s ongoing preparations for the ICC World Twenty20 received a boost in Lahore, where Umar Gul bowled his first overs in a week as he began his recovery from an injury that had threatened to – and still might ultimately – rule him out of the tournament in the West Indies.Despite the latest development, PCB chief selector Mohsin Khan sais that Gul will join the team for the tournament only if he is completely fit. “I will send Gul to the West Indies only when he is 100 per cent fit,” Mohsin said.Gul hurt his shoulder last week during a fielding drill at the camp when he landed awkwardly and had not bowled since then. Pakistan’s management was understood to be seriously concerned over the blow to their leading bowler in the format and a vital contributor in their triumph last year in England. But the injury may not have been as serious as was initially assessed, and Gul felt hopeful enough after a light bowl that he would be fit in time for the tournament, due to begin on April 30.”The shoulder is better and I bowled three overs today at the camp off a short run,” Gul told Cricinfo. “Thankfully there was no fracture or ligament damage and, though I felt a little stiff after the bowl, it feels a lot better now. I will start bowling off my full run in the next day or so and I am hopeful that I will be fine for the World Twenty20. There are still three to four days to go in the camp so there is time yet.”It is believed the Pakistan camp feels Gul is improving day by day and is monitoring him keenly during practice.Though Gul has undergone a dip in form across all three formats since Pakistan’s title-winning run last year, he remains a key component of the side. New coach Waqar Younis has ironed out a body alignment issue that was preventing Gul from getting the swing he usually does, and the belief in the camp is that it will help him return to the form of the first half of last year. Gul was Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker in both World Twenty20s, usually coming on in the death overs and bowling a mix of reverse-swinging yorkers, bouncers and back of length deliveries straight through to the end. He is the format’s leading wicket-taker around the world, with 43 scalps. The final decision about Gul’s inclusion will be taken by Tuesday.

Rangers’ 3 worst players v Livingston

Glasgow Rangers simply got the job done at home to Livingston on Wednesday night with a 1-0 win at Ibrox thanks to a late goal from Scott Arfield.

It was enough to give them all three points in the end, thus keeping them firmly in the driving seat for another Premiership title.

Some of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team may have been left disappointed with their own individual performances though, and The Transfer Tavern have used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who the three worst performers (to have played at least 45 minutes) were for the hosts on the night:

Glen Kamara (6.9)

Admittedly jointly-rated with Calvin Bassey, James Sands and Alex Lowry in terms of rating (6.9), Kamara ranks in third here as Sands did not finish the game, Bassey ultimately kept a clean sheet as a central defender, and Lowry is an 18-year-old who made his first appearance in the Premiership.

As for Kamara, he did not boss the midfield as he usually does, losing out on eight of his duels in total – the joint-highest out of his team-mates – while he also made no clearances or interceptions.

The Finland international was also guilty of losing possession of the ball 14 times, the fifth-most out of any Rangers player, as per SofaScore.

Scott Wright (6.8)

Wright ranks second with a 6.8 rating given by SofaScore.

The winger lost five duels and failed to record a single successful dribble, while he was also unsuccessful with three of his four crosses and lost possession 13 times in total.

On top of those figures, some members of the Ibrox faithful were particularly critical of his performance on the night.

Cedric Itten (6.7)

With a 6.7 overall rating, Itten was ranked as the Light Blues’ worst player of those who featured for 45 minutes or more.

The striker was beaten in four of his six duels and never managed a shot on target, while he also gave the ball away six times, as per SofaScore.

With the likes of Kemar Roofe on the bench and Alfredo Morelos to come back, he may now find his starting place under threat.

Australia return to the unknown

Since their first-round exit in last year’s World Twenty20, Australia have undergone a significant rebuild

Peter English01-May-2010OverviewDependable and destructive: Cameron White•Getty Images

Since their first-round exit in last year’s World Twenty20, Australia have undergone a significant rebuild and installed Michael Clarke as their full-time leader. The changes have led to hope of a strong performance but, unlike in the Test and one-day arenas, they don’t really know what to expect in the Caribbean.Cameron White, Dirk Nannes, David Hussey, David Warner and Shaun Tait are some of the limited-overs experts who are now highly rated in the squad while Steven Smith and Daniel Christian provide some youth. Clarke, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson and Brad Haddin bring the experience of productive careers in all three genres.Australia have appeared in 29 T20 internationals, including 15 wins and 12 losses, and should enter the event on a high after being unbeaten at home and in New Zealand during 2009-10. However, they were set back by a tight loss to Zimbabwe in their opening warm-up, which was a familiar result. They were upset by the same team in the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007 and their problems with slow starts continued at the 2009 tournament when they were beaten by West Indies and Sri Lanka. “It will be critical for us that we hit the ground running,” the coach Tim Nielsen said. Already they need to turn things around for the first match against Pakistan on Sunday.Twenty20 pedigreeTwenty20 is Australia’s worst format and the greatest concern is they don’t really know how to be the best. Most of the players are still learning how to master the tactics, although the selectors have finally relied on an impressive batch of specialists with considerable IPL and Big Bash experience. The national side has appeared in a lot of Twenty20s – nine more than India and 15 more than Bangladesh – but most of their main men don’t get a go in the domestic tournaments due to international commitments.Strengths and weaknessesDepending on the day, the fast-bowling attack can be the most frightening weapon or the place to attack. If Tait, Johnson and Nannes are on song life will be almost impossible for the batsmen. If they are loose they will be expensive on the smaller Caribbean grounds. Things might have been worse for the opposition if Brett Lee hadn’t been ruled out on the eve of the tournament with a forearm injury.Key menShaun Tait helped win Australia a World Cup the last time he was in the Caribbean, taking 23 wickets at 20.30. Over the past two years his body and mind have restricted him to limited-overs affairs, where he can bowl a handful of overs at full pace. He has already clocked 160kph this year and is a severe threat whenever operating near his peak. David Warner has become a brutal Twenty20 specialist and has an essential role at the top of the order. While Shane Watson can show his muscle, Warner is the man capable of racing along at two runs a ball without feeling like he’s out of control. In 13 matches with Australia he has a strike-rate of 155.32 and if he fires Australia’s chances improve significantly.X-factorIt still feels a bit strange saying it, but in this set-up Cameron White is a senior figure. Over the past year he has turned from a fringe limited-overs figure into a vice-captain who is dependable and destructive. With the bat he can add steel or power and when he hits cleanly no ground is big enough. In his previous T20 international he crunched 64 off 26 balls in a barely believable display.Vital stats Shaun Tait and Nathan Hauritz are the only players in Australia’s squad with a batting strike-rate below Michael Clarke’s 108.83 In his entire Twenty20 career, Dirk Nannes has played 62 games and taken 84 wickets at an average of 18.89. That makes him the fifth-most successful wicket-taker and he was second on the 2009 listAustralia’s T20 winning percentage of 55.35% puts them in sixth spot overall
