McAvennie drops Everton transfer claim

Having gone through October and November without a win in the Premier League and with only one win from four games in December, it’s safe to say that Everton have not been in the best shape in recent months.

Luckily for the Toffees, the January transfer window is close to opening and could therefore give the Merseyside club the opportunity to potentially strengthen their squad and put them in a good place to put their poor run of form behind them end the season on a high note.

Speaking to Football Insider on what business Everton could do in January, pundit Frank McAvennie had this to say on the matter.

He said: “If Everton are going to stick with Rafa then it needs to be shown. The easiest way to do that is in January, you can give Rafa the players he wants. It’s no good sacking [Marcel] Brands and backing the manager if the form doesn’t turn around and you sack the manager anyway.

“It sounds like Rafa will have the chance to build his own team and that’s what he needs. You can’t judge him, it’s not his team. Let him bring four or five quality players in this January then let’s see where they are. I can see that happening.”

The prospect of Everton signing four or five quality players must be an exciting one for a lot of Toffees fans who will undoubtedly be hoping that Benitez can get 2022 off to a winning start in the same way he started the season off with Everton.

However, as McAvennie mentioned, with Everton saying goodbye to their director of football Marcel Brands earlier this month, it will be interesting to see how the club goes about their business in January and if Brands’ absence will have an impact.

In terms of which areas of the pitch the Toffees could look to strengthen in January, if they are aiming to sign a handful of quality players, they should definitely focus on signing at least one, if not more defensive players given how only Leeds United, Watford, Newcastle United and Norwich City have conceded more goals than they have so far this season.

Furthermore, they may have to replace the likes of Yerry Mina and Lucas Digne who have both been linked with an exit away. Consider Seamus Coleman’s age, too, and the idea of signing a few defenders certainly makes sense.

After all, the Merseyside outfit won’t start picking up more consistent point hauls until their defence gets better.

O desequilíbrio do Vinicius, buscava oxigenar a parte ofensiva.

West Ham tipped to sign Cyle Larin

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has tipped David Moyes to sign Besiktas striker Cyle Larin in the January transfer window, as he would ‘fit the bill’ for the Hammers, as per GIVEMESPORT.

The Lowdown: Goals drying up

Goals have recently dried up for the Hammers, who have failed to find the net in their previous three games. Their top scorer Michail Antonio has lost his clinical form, failing to score in his last eight appearances in the Premier League.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 31-year-old is currently the Irons’ only senior striker and this has caused deep problems for Moyes, as his once reliable attacking threat is no longer bringing in the goals.

As a result, West Ham are looking to bring in a centre-forward in the January transfer window. The manager has already stated that he will dip into the market to provide the squad with some much-needed depth.

The Latest: O’Rourke tips Moyes to sign Larin

Following Moyes’ admission that he will need additions to the West Ham squad if they are to continue in their push for Champions League qualification, O’Rourke has tipped the Irons boss to sign Besiktas striker Larin.

This comes after the Canadian was linked with a move to the east London club before, and the journalist believes that he could be an ideal signing for West Ham.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, O’Rourke said: “He’s a big strong striker who can play right across the front positions as well and that will be attractive to West Ham. He would definitely fit the bill.”

The Verdict: Depth is needed

As the club’s only recognised striker is currently out of form, it is crucial that Moyes is able to bring in an extra attacker in the January transfer window.

Larin has long been tipped for a big European move, even before his switch to the Turkish league. Former Orlando City teammate and Brazil legend Kaká spoke highly of the 26-year-old in the past, saying: “Cyle is a very good player and the third season for us will be great, but I think Cyle can play in a big team in Europe as well.”

Larin has also proven himself on the international stage. In 44 appearances for Canada, he has bagged an impressive 22 goals. This adds to his fine tally at club level; since joining Besiktas, he has made 68 Süper Lig appearances, scoring 29 goals and producing seven assists.

Maybe O’Rourke is right; this could just be the centre-forward alternative to Antonio that Moyes is craving.

Depois do Atlético-GO, o time de Jair Ventura visita São Paulo e Palmeiras.

Cricket Australia says players can decide on IPL

Cricket Australia will let players involved in the IPL make their own decisions about whether to take part

Tim May: “Sporting teams are very palatable targets for terrorist organisations who want to make a lot of noise and lift their international profile”•AFP

Cricket Australia will let players involved in the IPL make their own decisions about whether to take part in the tournament following threats on their safety from India. The Shiv Sena political party has said they would not allow Australians to play in Maharashtra following attacks on Indian students in Melbourne.”At the end of the day those players make their own decision about whether or not they go,” Peter Young, the Cricket Australia spokesman, told AAP. “But we want them to be able to make informed decisions and we’d like to work with the ACA [Australian Cricketers’ Association] to ensure they can make informed decisions.” The IPL is due to begin in March and Australian players feature heavily in the franchise line-ups.The Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith said the final decision on whether players go to the country would rest with Cricket Australia. “They [Shiv Sena] are known to make colourful remarks, and they have engaged in conduct which both India and Australia have been disapproving of in the past, so far as disrupting cricket games are concerned,” he said in the Courier Mail. “But we take any threat to Australian sportsmen and sportswomen … playing sport overseas very seriously.”Player security has been an issue for Australia whenever they are scheduled to travel to the subcontinent. Australia has not toured Pakistan since 1998 due to the safety situation and sends independent security personnel to review arrangements before each trip.”Our policy, as demonstrated over the years, is to only travel if dispassionate, expert, independent advice suggests that it is safe,” Young said. “On those occasions when advice has suggested otherwise, we have not travelled, including when the ICC said Pakistan was safe and our advice was that it was not.”In 2008 there were a series of bombs that went off in India before the Test visit, which went ahead without any problems. However, teams are much more sensitive following the attack on Sri Lanka’s team bus in Lahore, and this week three of the Togo football team were killed by gunmen who targeted their vehicle in Angola.Tim May, the international players’ association chief executive, claimed in the Australian the security situation in India was now as worrying as a year ago, when Mumbai terrorist attacks and a national election forced the tournament to be moved to South Africa at the last minute.”We don’t have to go too far back to the attack on the bus carrying the Togo soccer team in Africa,” May said. “It underlines the fact that sporting teams are very palatable targets for terrorist organisations who want to make a lot of noise and lift their international profile.”May said a franchise had written to a player saying “if you’re scared, don’t come” to the IPL. “That doesn’t do the player any good and it doesn’t do the IPL any good,” May said. “You’d like to think the IPL would realise that it is a reasonable request by players wanting to know about security arrangements.” Australia are also due in India for another seven-match one-day series at the end of the year.

Newcastle plotting swoop for Umtiti

Newcastle United are interested in a deal to bring Samuel Umtiti to St. James’ Park in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Spanish publication Marca, who claim that Eddie Howe has identified the Barcelona centre-back as one of his primary targets in the winter market, with the Magpies believed to be preparing a £17m offer for the 28-year-old.

The report goes on to state that, as a result of the LaLiga side’s dire financial situation, Xavi Hernandez is willing to sanction the sale of the France international next month, with Newcastle, AC Milan and Benfica the three clubs believed to be most interested in the defender.

The next Puyol

While it is true that Umtiti has fallen down the pecking order at Camp Nou in recent seasons, making just one appearance in LaLiga during the current campaign, it is undeniable that the £220k-per-week centre-back would nevertheless be a huge improvement on Howe’s options in the heart of his current Newcastle defence – who have already shipped a joint league-high 42 goals this season.

Indeed, in the season following the defender’s £24.6m move to Barcelona back in 2016, the World Cup winner was one of Barca’s most impressive performers over his 25 LaLiga appearances, helping his side keep eight clean sheets and scoring one goal, as well as making an average of 1.9 interceptions, 1.1 tackles, 2.7 clearances, 63.4 passes and winning 65% of his duels per game.

These returns saw the player who Mundo Deportivo claimed “has become a perfect successor to Carles Puyol” earn an extremely impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.12, ranking him as the club’s ninth-best player in the league that year.

As such, considering the fact that he is still just 28 years of age – entering what is typically the peak age of performance for a centre-back – should Umtiti be able to rediscover this level of form after his potential switch to the North East next month, £17m would very much look to be a bargain for a player who legendary defender Eric Abidal dubbed a “world-class” talent.
