Alison Conroy has dropped an extremely worrying injury update on Celtic winger Jota.

In a recent post on Twitter, the Sky Sports journalist revealed that, as a result of the hamstring injury the Benfica loanee picked up in Celtic’s 1-0 win over Hearts last week, the 22-year-old has now been ruled out of the League Cup final against Hibernian on December 19.

Speaking about the condition of the winger, Conroy said: “Jota will miss the League Cup final.”

Australia expect to have a replacement for Paine, who will fly home, before the next ODI in Delhi on Saturday but they have not named his substitute. Newcastle United look set to pip Manchester United in the race to sign Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier, as per Football Insights.

The Lowdown: Trippier in demand…

Trippier, who has been with the Spanish giants since 2019, is thought to be open to a Premier League return.

He was first linked with a move to Newcastle shortly before Eddie Howe’s arrival. Reports then claimed that Howe wanted to make the right-back his first January signing, with Manchester United also interested.

Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Everton are also willing to make a move, but it seems as if a move to Tyneside has been finalised.

The Latest: PIF’s first signing

The Mag relayed a claim from Football Insights, who suggested that Trippier is set to become PIF’s first signing after taking over at St James’ Park.

Football Insights’ Twitter post on Monday evening believes that a move is ‘all done’, with more information set to come out ‘in the next day or two’.

The Verdict: Shrewd move

Howe will know exactly what Trippier would bring to his side, with the 31-year-old making 61 appearances in total under him at Burnley, scoring four goals and registering 11 assists in all competitions over two seasons in Lancashire (Transfermarkt).

The Magpies also have just two right-backs on the books compared to three left-backs, so adding Trippier to his squad would balance thatt out nicely, and it seems as if Howe is going to get his wish.

The England defender has plenty of international experience and helped Atletico Madrid to the La Liga title last season, so securing his signature seems to be a good starting point as Howe looks to lift Newcastle out of the Premier League relegation zone over the coming months.

Sri Lanka came into the series intending to secure their maiden Test victory on Indian soil but were left with a lot of soul searching to do after they were thrashed by an innings-and-144-runs in the second Test in Kanpur.Though India ran up 642, Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara defended the selection of three spinners. “If we had won the toss and batted first on the wicket and got a decent amount of runs on the board our spinners would have been quite a threat on this track,” he said. “It would have been very hard to score runs off them as well. The chances that we did create were not taken by us, allowing the Indian batsmen to get away on a really flat track. 400 runs on the first day was a little too much.”The main concern for Sri Lanka was the inability of the world’s leading wicket-taker Muttiah Muralitharan to provide the breakthroughs for his team as he had done till the recent past. Murali went for over hundred runs for the second time in two Tests; so far in the series his returns are five wickets for 396 runs, average 79.20. “It does become a concern when your star strike bowler is not really picking up the wickets you know he can, but he is still the best bowler that’s played the game,” Sangakkara said. “You still have to have faith in him and trust him and back him 100% to do the job because he is going to do it at one point, hopefully in the next Test.”The Kanpur defeat was the largest in terms of runs to India but Sangakkara remained optimistic that he had the bowlers to win in Mumbai. “We have the potential to pick 20 wickets with the bowlers that we have,” he said. “Potential is one thing really doing the job is another. Dinanath Ramnarine has suggested the West Indies first-class competition be extended to two rounds

The West Indies Players Association (WIPA) has suggested the first-class Regional Four Day Competition be extended, as the current tournament format does not prepare players sufficiently for international cricket. The WIPA president Dinanath Ramnarine has said the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) should ensure the tournament consists of two rounds instead of one.As per the current format, each of the six teams get to play six games each, which Ramnarine said was insufficient. He reiterated the proposal made in the WIPA’s 15-Point Development Plan for West Indies cricket: “West Indies first-class season should be made up of two rounds of matches with a minimum of 12 four-day games per year played alongside the international series.””One round is insufficient in this modern era of cricket. We have seen that in recent years,” Ramnarine was quoted in the WIPA’s official website. “There are complaints from all quarters about the players playing too much limited-overs cricket and there is some validity to that. As such we are adamant that the four-day tournament should be two rounds in order to better prepare the players for international Test cricket.”He said the Memorandum of Understanding between the WICB and the WIPA requires both parties to come to an agreement on the schedules before releasing them. However, the WICB drafted the schedule without consulting them. Ramnarine said he was willing to meet the WICB “as soon as possible to review the proposed schedule and agree a final schedule in the best interest of the development of West Indies cricket.”There were similar calls from the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board and Joel Garner, the current West Indies team manager, to have a longer first-class season.
