Rangers fumbled the ball with Kenny McLean

Retired Scotland international Kris Commons recently claimed that Rangers should attempt to sign Billy Gilmour on loan from Chelsea in the summer and take advantage of his lack of game-time on loan at Norwich.

The midfielder has not started a Premier League game since 18 September, losing his place in the middle of the park for the Norfolk side.

Interestingly, one of the players keeping Gilmour out of the team also has strong connections with Rangers – that’s Kenny McLean.

Not only was the midfielder a reported target for Rangers in 2020, he also came through the ranks at Ibrox in the academy. He played for the under-17 team for two years before joining St Mirren, where he eventually broke through into the first team.

McLean went on to join Aberdeen and then signed for Norwich in January 2018. He made 253 Premiership appearances for St Mirren and Aberdeen, scoring 36 goals and providing 21 assists to earn himself a move down south.

The £25k-per-week beast has gone on to make a name for himself in the Championship and the Premier League with Norwich. Despite suffering relegation in the 2019/20 campaign, Canaries boss Daniel Farke hailed McLean’s Premier League performances and claimed that he is “irreplaceable”.

He said: “Kenny for me last season was unbelievably important and he has developed further. He is a versatile, all-round player with the game to play a number of positions.

“Let’s be honest, we have some players with great possession skills, or finding a key pass, or maybe delivering a set-piece. But he is probably our most complete midfielder. He is competitive, his workload and his endurance are good and he is definitely our best defensive header.

“He is aggressive in the duels and our most dynamic midfielder.

“He is also composed on the ball, and a left-footer. He offers many skills, and that physicality at this level is irreplaceable for us. If you can dominate the ball in a game then maybe the defensive skills are not as important.”

The Scotland international has played 112 times for Norwich since the move from Aberdeen, playing 45 times in the Premier League and winning two Championship titles. In that time, he has scored eight goals and provided 15 assists from a deep-lying midfield position.

This suggests that he has the quality required to be a top-class player for Rangers, as he has proven his ability in the top two tiers in England and in the Premiership with St Mirren and Aberdeen. Therefore, the Gers fumbled the ball by opting against keeping him in their academy at the start of his career.

Instead of ending up in England with Norwich, McLean could have come through the academy at Ibrox and bossed the midfield for years at Rangers. They could also have brought him through into the first team before making a decent chunk of change by selling him on, with Transfermarkt valuing him at £4.05m in 2019. Instead, they axed him from the academy and watched on as he has enjoyed a fairly successful career.

He’s one who slipped through the cracks at Ibrox…

No animosity with Pietersen – Smith

In the 2007 World Twenty20 there was still a strong undercurrent of tension between the two players

The ICC World Twenty20 hasn’t been short of intrigue during the group stage and eye-catching match-ups will continue when the Super Eights begin at Trent Bridge on Thursday. The second game of the day has England taking on South Africa and no contest between the two sides is complete without a mention of the Kevin Pietersen factor. When the two sides met in the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa during 2007, Pietersen was controversially run out at Cape Town after a collision with Shaun Pollock. It was at a stage when there was still a strong undercurrent of tension between Pietersen and Graeme Smith, but after a more harmonious contest in this country last year the South Africa captain believes any issues are now in the past.”I don’t think there’s animosity there. There will always be the competitiveness between players. He’s a world-class batter,” he said. “There’s no doubt he’ll be up for the game on Thursday and tactically we will look at a few things.”But I think South African teams have come a long way in terms of the way we play our game. We control our emotions very well now. We are tactically quite astute and calm under pressure. We’d rather look at executing good skills rather than get into scrambles that don’t really need to be there.”Smith also expects the hosts to continue the form they showed against Pakistan rather than the hesitancy that led to defeat against Netherlands. “We are preparing like we are going to get the one that played against Pakistan,” he said. “England have got some class players and obviously will have home support going into the game.””It’s a great challenge for us. It’s a wonderful experience to play England in England and I know all of us are looking forward to the occasion. We’ve played some good cricket since we’ve been in England and we just want to carry that forward on Thursday.”He is confident his team can emerge from a tough Super Eights group and progress to the knock-out stages of tournament after they fought back to secure a one-run victory in their final qualifying match against New Zealand. Both teams were already through to the second phase so it was about building momentum and while South Africa’s batting struggled to post 128 for 7, their bowling and fielding impressed as they suffocated the New Zealand chase. Smith’s side is now grouped alongside defending champions India, the dangerous West Indies as well as England but he isn’t worried about the task ahead.”We are not looking at the other group and moaning,” he said. “This is the job we’ve got to do. Whoever gets through this group has an advantage. They will have played really competitive cricket through the Super Eights and will probably be better for it going through to the semi-finals.”South Africa fielded an unchanged team throughout their warm-up and group games, resisting to the opportunity to test their bench strength against New Zealand, which means the four who haven’t played – Yusuf Abdulla, Morne Morkel, Justin Ontong and Robin Peterson – are low on match practice should they be needed at short notice.Smith, though, was unconcerned and is keen to maintain a settled side throughout. “If you go all the way in the tournament, it’s only seven games. It’s not like it’s 14 or 15. It’s not a long tournament,” he said. “The guys who aren’t playing have trained really well so I am pretty comfortable with where everybody is.”

A decisão começa nesta quarta-feira.

Pundit hails ‘huge’ Leeds United moment

Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills believes the late draw against Wolves last weekend was ‘huge’, ahead of the Whites’ trip to Norwich City.

The Lowdown: Leeds salvage point

Marcelo Bielsa’s looked set to experience another damaging result in the Premier League last Saturday, trailing 1-0 at home to Wolves.

Rodrigo’s last-gasp penalty earned Leeds a point, however, and the celebrations that followed summed up how important the moment felt.

The draw still leaves the Whites languishing in a relegation scrap though, with a trip to bottom-placed Norwich looming on Sunday afternoon.

The Latest: Pundit hails ‘huge’ moment

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills claimed Rodrigo’s goal could be a turning point in Leeds’ season, as they look to overcome their disappointing form at Carrow Road:

“It’s huge. If you lose that game, you’re right up against it. You salvage a point, it feels like a bit of a win.

“All of a sudden, you go into a really crucial game with Norwich with confidence. You’re thinking ‘If we win this game, we can get ourselves heading right up the table’.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-22/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Time to kick on

There is now almost a quarter of the league season gone and it is time for Leeds to click into gear, having won just once to date in the competition in 2021/22.

Granted, injuries to the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford haven’t helped, but Bielsa’s men are better than the table suggests currently, as highlighted by their ninth-place finish last time around.

Norwich represent the perfect opponent this weekend, and if Leeds can pick up all three points at Carrow Road, it could be the next significant step on the road to recovery.

In other news, Leeds could have to break their transfer record to sign a reported target. Find out who it is here.

Holland takes his turn

Australia A take on Pakistan A in Townsville this week and there will be plenty of interest in the spinner Jon Holland

Brydon Coverdale25-Jun-2009

Jon Holland has earned rave reviews despite playing only four first-class games•Garry Sparke

As Australia’s selectors ponder whether to use a specialist spinner in the Ashes, they will be keeping a close eye on proceedings in Townsville. Three slow bowlers are in the Australia A squad playing there this week and it’s the most unheralded of the trio, Victoria’s Jon Holland, who will create the most interest. The selectors already know what to expect of Jason Krejza and Cameron White, who are also in the squad. Holland is more of a mystery. A left-arm orthodox bowler – that in itself is rare in Australia – with only four first-class games to his name, he has earned such impressive reviews that Allan Border even suggested he should have been picked ahead of Nathan Hauritz on the Ashes tour. That endorsement wasn’t based on statistics. Holland, 22, made his state debut last October and has nine first-class wickets at 49.11. He hasn’t yet won a permanent spot in Victoria’s line-up but such is the dearth of spin options around Australia that Holland can jump the queue with strong performances against Pakistan A.”I was fairly surprised. A few people had said it was coming up and I might be a chance but I hadn’t really thought much of it,” Holland told Cricinfo of his Australia A selection. “It’s come out of the blue because I didn’t finish the year playing for Victoria. I only got a couple of chances and I didn’t really cement my spot, so I was a bit shocked when they told me I was in.”It wasn’t a surprise to those who had been following Holland’s progress for the past few years. Ray Bright, the Victorian selector and the most recent left-arm orthodox spinner to play Test cricket for Australia, has been watching Holland since he starred in an under-19 state carnival in Perth four years ago.His highlight in that tournament was 11 wickets against South Australia and Bright believes even now Holland isn’t fully aware of his own potential. He has spent plenty of time working with Holland, inevitably nicknamed Dutchy, who Victoria rate so highly that already they have him pencilled in for a 10- to 15-year state career.”His strength is he’s an attacking bowler,” Bright said. “He’s a very relaxed individual. That’s when he bowls at his best. I get the feeling there is a bit of a thought process around from some people that they’re trying to make him into more of a defensive bowler and I think that would be completely against what his strengths actually are.”The spin coach Terry Jenner has kept track of Holland’s development and watched him bowl at the Centre of Excellence this month. He has seen glimpses of Daniel Vettori in Holland and he believes his biggest weapon is terrific subtlety in his change of pace. Like Bright, he wants Holland to retain his willingness to flight the ball.”Most guys just dart it in and Dutchy doesn’t,” Jenner said. “I hope he never loses that. It’s a natural gift for a young guy to have. Vettori isn’t a big spinner – in fact I think Jon spins it further – but Vettori varies his pace and that change of pace is one of Jon’s attributes too.”However, Jenner hopes Holland isn’t thrust into the national team before he is ready and thinks a promotion in the next couple of seasons might be too soon. The selectors have found it hard to get the best out of their young spinners in recent years. Dan Cullen and Cullen Bailey were rushed into Cricket Australia contracts only to slip quickly from the radar. Krejza, White and Beau Casson have discovered how fickle the selection process can be.As Krejza learnt when he was axed after his second Test, wicket-taking potential is rapidly forgotten when runs leak. Hauritz is the only spinner not to have fallen out of favour lately and his role is primarily to keep things tight, although there is no guarantee he will be in the starting line-up in the Ashes. Part of the problem is a lack of willingness from state captains to trust their slow bowlers.”There was a round last year where … no side out of the six Sheffield Shield sides played a specialist spinner,” Bright said. “There is a bit of a dearth around. Nathan Hauritz is struggling to get a game at New South Wales and yet he’s the one spinner in the Australian side.”In the meantime, three slow bowlers will take the field for Australia A. The first of two four-day games against Pakistan A begins in Townsville on Friday before the sides head to Brisbane for three one-dayers and a Twenty20. It is the perfect moment for Holland to shine, as he not only aims to impress the Australian selectors but also the Victorian selectors, who will need to juggle him with Bryce McGain next summer.”It’s a good time,” Holland said. “If I can get a few games for Victoria and Australia A I’ve just got to take every opportunity that I can get, hopefully perform well, and the opportunity is there.”

Liverpool linked with Pedro Goncalves

With more goals scored than any other Premier League team so far this season with 29 strikes in ten matches, Liverpool boast the best-attacking record at this stage of the 2021/22 campaign.

Despite this impressive record, it seems as though the Merseyside club are interested in adding another attacking talent to their squad at some point in the near future.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported by Record (via Sport Witness) that Liverpool have shown an interest in signing Sporting Lisbon winger Pedro Goncalves.

However, the report also claims that the Portuguese club value Goncalves at €80m (£67.7m) after he recently signed a new deal with them where he is now contracted until 2026.

Jota 2.0?

The 23-year-old joined Sporting back in the 2020 summer transfer window from fellow Portuguese club FC Famalicao for a fee of just £5.85m according to Transfermarkt.

Since then, the winger, who is currently valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, has made 47 appearances for Sporting across all competitions where he has managed to score 27 goals and provide six assists in the process, which could be why Liverpool have an apparent interest in him.

Before joining Famalicao, Goncalves had a spell with Wolves’ U23 side, bagging nine goals and supplying four assists in 38 appearances. However, he only ever made one outing at senior level for the Midlands club.

During his time in England, Goncalves was described as “outstanding” by their U23 boss Rob Edwards.

So far this season, Goncalves has beaten the goalkeeper on four occasions and provided one assist in ten appearances across all competitions.

Despite a potential hefty transfer fee, we feel that a move for the Portuguese is something FSG should definitely explore to see. For starters, his exciting attacking talents would make a lot of Liverpool fans happy, that’s especially when you consider the player’s young age too.

Goncalves has managed to rack up an average of 3.2 shots at goal and 1.8 key passes per game in the league this season and with that in mind, we feel he could be the next version of Diogo Jota at Anfield.

Like the current Liverpool target, Jota had a spell with Wolves before signing for the Reds in September 2020 and there are actually plenty of similarities between the two players. The club’s number 20 is also a fierce attacker in front of goal, racking up an average of 2.2 shots and 1.6 key passes a match.

However, with the possible financial implications of the deal, it could well be a difficult one for the Merseyside club to pull off.
