Spurs target Adama Traore set for new deal

After Tottenham Hotspur failed to sign Adama Traore over the summer, talks have ‘resumed over a new deal’ between the winger and his current club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Lowdown: Long-term target

Ever since catching the eye during the 2019/20 season, when he contributed to 13 goals in 37 Premier League appearances to help Wolves qualify for the Europa League, the 25-year-old has been linked with a move away from Molineux.

Last season was a tougher campaign for the Spain international, with the absence of Raul Jimenez and a lack of quality in the Wolves squad under Nuno Espirito Santo. Traore scored only three goals and grabbed three assists during a disappointing season for him and the team.

Despite his astonishing pace and strength, he has lacked a real cutting edge, with only 10 goals in 142 appearances for club and country since joining Wolves in 2018.

Traore was a target for Spurs over the summer and his opening three appearances of the campaign have seem him rack up an xG tally of 1.53, with only eight Premier League players having a higher number.

The Latest: New deal at Wolves

According to The Athletic’s Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers, Traore has ‘resumed talks over a new deal’ with senior figures at the West Midlands club.

After Spurs lodged a £30m bid for him late in the transfer window, the winger could finally agree to a longer stay at Molineux after previously stalling on talks.

The Athletic stated that the process has gone on since the end of last year after Traore believed he should be among the top earners along with Jimenez and Joao Moutinho. After a deadlock in talks, the deal came close again and stalled again when Nuno departed for Tottenham.

Under Bruno Lage, Traore has impressed in the first three games and has had two golden opportunities to earn the Wanderers their first points of the season, sliding the ball wide against Leicester City before being denied by Hugo Lloris a week later.

The Verdict: Missed opportunity for Spurs

In August, Spiers also reported that Wolves would need to sell in order to buy during the summer. They did so with Owen Otasowie and Rafa Mir departing for Club Brugge and Sevilla respectively, but the rumours linking Traore and Ruben Neves with moves elsewhere never came to fruition.

The ‘unplayable’ right-winger, in the words of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, would add something different to the wide men Nuno currently possesses at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. With Son Heung-Min consistently providing the goods, an effective winger on the other side is something that Spurs could do with if they are to return to the top four.

After working well with Nuno at Wolves previously, a relationship between the pair could have blossomed. However, with Spurs failing to meet the £50m valuation and rumours of a new deal in the offing, the north Londoners may have missed their chance to sign the 25-year-old.

O Peixe deve ir a campo com Vanderlei; Victor Ferraz, Lucas Veríssimo, David Braz e Jean Mota; Renato, Thiago Maia e Lucas Lima; Bruno Henrique, Copete e Kayke.

A delegação santista vai a São Paulo nesta sexta-feira para ficar concentrada para a partida.

Is this Celtic’s new Olivier Ntcham?

Ange Postecoglou’s first summer as the new manager of Celtic was an extremely busy one.

Together with Dominic McKay, the Hoops boss carried out a thorough upheaval of the playing staff, with plenty of bodies coming and going.

Twelve first-team players arrived, including three on a frantic transfer deadline day, but Postecoglou was also keen to strengthen the ranks in the reserve team. They brought in the likes of Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide from Sheffield Wednesday, while Joey Dawson was also recruited from the English Football League to Parkhead.

Shaw looks as though he’ll have a bright future in Glasgow, but sadly he has not been able to work his way into the manager’s plans so far. Instead, it was claimed by The Athletic this week that Dane Murray and Bosun Lawal were ahead of him in the pecking order.

Murray earned his Celtic debut in the Champions League at the beginning of the season, while Lawal was one of many signings this summer, arriving from Watford in a deal worth just £120,000.

He has made an instant impact at the club, taking on the captaincy of the B team, who have enjoyed a vibrant start to their life in the Lowland League.

A tough midfield player, he could well become the Hoops’ new Olivier Ntcham over the next few seasons.

Ntcham left Celtic this summer as he headed to Swansea following a dismal last 12 months in Scotland. The Frenchman was labelled a “disgrace” by Noel Whelan after he appeared to down tools with his performances and it was a sad way for such a talented player’s career in Scotland to end.

When he was on song, he was a fabulous asset. Discussing the midfielder in 2015 when he was still at Manchester City, The Guardian wrote: “Despite still being a teenager he already appears a powerhouse, a quality that is balanced by mobility, the ability to play the simple or clever ball, and a natural instinct to ghost into the penalty area at the right time to score.”

Genoa president Enrico Preziosi added: “I’ve been in the world of football 26 years and I’ve never seen a similar player at his age. He has an unlimited potential, and is really a fantastic talent.”

Ntcham never lived up to that potential, but in being a long-legged midfield general, Lawal has similar attributes at his disposal. The 18-year-old won’t be seen in the first team for a while and has yet to feature at senior level but he looks an incredibly promising player.

During his time with the Hornets, Watford icon Troy Deeney loved what he saw from the teenager, saying: “You know what, he’s got a little bit of [Abdoulaye] Doucoure about him.

“He can get past people effortlessly and keep striding, he has that big long stride. I thought he did really well.

“Three or four days after playing in the U23s, he played another 90 minutes and it was effortless to him.”

The tireless youngster clearly made a big impression in Hertfordshire, and by being entrusted with skipper duties in the Celtic B team, he is already making enormous strides at his new club.

Lawal is certainly one to watch.

Ponting disappointed with criticism

Ricky Ponting has defended himself against claims that he put himself above the team on the fourth day in Nagpur

Ricky Ponting has defended himself against claims that he put himself above the team on the fourth day in Nagpur and voiced his disappointment over criticism from Allan Border, the former Australian captain. India won the match by 172 runs, giving them a 2-0 series victory, after their chances improved dramatically on Sunday afternoon when Ponting employed part-time bowlers to lift the flagging over-rate.The move saved Ponting from a possible suspension for next week’s first Test against New Zealand, although he was fined 20% of his match fee and his players were docked 10% by the match referee Chris Broad. Ponting’s decision also eased the pressure for the batsmen after India had slipped to 166 for 6 and they quickly increased their lead from 252 and eventually set the visitors a victory target of 382.The tactics frustrated Border, whose name is on the series trophy with Sunil Gavaskar, and he said during the television commentary “I’m glad Ricky can’t read my mind right know, because he’s not going to like it”. Border captained the team in 93 Tests in the 1980s and 90s and is a current Cricket Australia director.”To tell you the truth I’m a little bit disappointed with some of the criticism, particularly from former Australian captains and CA [Cricket Australia] board members,” Ponting said. “I had Jason Krejza bowling at one end, who ended up taking 12 wickets in the game, and Cameron White – he’d been the No. 1-picked spinner in the first three Test matches – operating from the other end for a couple of overs.”That didn’t work out the way I’d have liked, Michael Clarke was the next choice, but he’d been off the field ill and couldn’t bowl until 3.10pm. And in the situation we were nine overs down.” If a team is six overs behind schedule the captain faces the possibility of a suspension.Ponting was upset by suggestions in the Australia media that he was more concerned about the possibility of a ban than a quick end to the India innings. “The thing I’m most disappointed about is there seems to be this inference out there that I’ve put myself totally ahead of the team,” he said.”Anybody that knows me, or knows the way I play my cricket or operate around the Australian team, or any team, would hopefully not say that’s the case. I’d like to think as far as team players go, that there haven’t been many more that have ever played for Australia that would do more than I have for the team.”Ponting said he had an obligation “to play the game in the right spirit” and try to bowl 90 overs in the day. “We speak about it at every team meeting,” he said. “I’ve told the bowlers, the whole team, for a couple of years now that if we keep going the way we are there’s going to be some time or moment where it’s really going to come back and hurt us. I’m not saying that’s right now, but there have been other times where we’ve had to do that.”

Rauf has 'no concerns' about travelling to India

Asad Rauf, the Pakistan umpire, says he has no concerns about travelling to India to officiate in the two-Test series between India and England with the BCCI guaranteeing the ICC of stringent security measures for match officials.Rauf, one of the two Pakistani representatives on the ICC’s Elite Panel of umpires – the other is Aleem Dar – said he would travel to India as a “peace ambassador.”Relations between India and Pakistan have hit a low following the Mumbai attacks, with the Indian government alleging that the terrorists had a Pakistani link. Pakistan has strongly denied the charges but the four-year-old peace process between the two neighbours is at a standstill.Concerns loomed over a Pakistani national traveling to India, but Rauf remained unperturbed. “I have no concerns at all about traveling to India,” Rauf told Cricinfo. “The ICC has spoken to the BCCI and they have told them that extra security measures will be put in place for us match officials. I am happy to be going there. In fact, it is important to go there because we go as peace ambassadors. Sports and these things should not mix.”Rauf has received no notification from the Pakistan board over the ties between both countries, but he received confirmation of the schedule and itinerary from the ICC on Thursday and will apply for his visa on Friday.Vince van der Bijl, the ICC’s umpires’ and referees’ manager, had asked the BCCI for security measures for match officials – Daryl Harper of Australia is the other umpire and New Zealand’s Jeff Crowe the match referee – at a par with the players. Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive told Cricinfo everyone was an important participant in the Test match and must be accorded similar security measures as the players.England’s tour had been thrown in doubt after the team returned home during the ODI series following the attacks. However, they will fly to Abu Dhabi on Thursday for a training camp before returning to India for the Tests next week.Rauf, who has officiated in 25 Tests, 56 ODIs and eight Twenty20 internationals, last stood in a Test in October, between India and Australia in Mohali – which is also the venue for the second Test between India and England.

West Ham development won’t please Moyes

A worrying report has surfaced that’ll surely leave West Ham United boss David Moyes worried…

What’s the word?

According to The Sun’s Charlie Wyett (via the Daily Mail), the Irons’ new summer signing Kurt Zouma’s £125k-per-week wages haven’t gone down with the Scot’s tight-knit group of players at Rush Green.

The 26-year-old centre-back, who has won two Premier League titles and a Champions League, joined the east London outfit in a reported £29.8m deal from Chelsea just a few days before the deadline last month.

His wages have instantly seen him become the Hammers’ highest-paid player, as per Spotrac, with Andriy Yarmolenko (£115k-per-week) and Jarrod Bowen (£96k-per-week) following closely behind.

Trouble in paradise?

It’s no wonder several of Moyes’ current squad are upset by this development, even if a player of that calibre has fully justified such a high amount of money.

For example, in recent months, Vladimir Coufal has reportedly been left frustrated and let down with talks over a new deal, per Sky Sports.

The Czech right-back wants to remain at the club but feels the quality of his performances last season has earned a major hike on his £30k-per-week contract, rather than it being based on appearances.

Similarly, the ever-reliable ExWHUemployee recently revealed the reasons behind Declan Rice not signing an extension at the London Stadium yet. In response to the Telegraph’s bombshell that the England international had rejected two new offers, the club insider said (via Hammers.News):

“The information about Rice is true. This is because the contract offers have been below what Yarmolenko is currently on, what [Javier] Hernandez was on and other well paid players. For the player to stay at the club and turn down big moves the pay needs to reflect his ability.”

Therefore, this claim from The Sun could have some truth to it, particularly given Ex’s previous remarks on a similar matter.

This is the last thing that Moyes will need heading back into the domestic campaign following the international break. His side have started the season in great form, going unbeaten from their three matches, having ended last term in sixth-place and earning qualification to the Europa League.

He won’t want a situation brewing heading into some crucial encounters, including their first group game in Europe, so you could forgive him if he was a little concerned about the players’ attitude and morale.

All in all, the squad should be delighted with the addition of Zouma as it takes them one step closer to the next level. The rest should come in due course, if the Hammers’ hierarchy has any sense about them.
