Bangladesh left-arm spinner Enamul Haque Jr and Sri Lankan medium-pacer Sujeewa de Silva will join the Maharashtra squad for the 2008-09 season. Haque and de Silva will replace Sairaj Bahutule and Munaf Patel who have not renewed their contracts. The selectors were keen on choosing international professionals since other states could be interested in domestic players, Maharashtra Cricket Association president Ajay Shirke, has said.”Since the board allows only three professionals in a squad of 25, we decided to go for two players that other states will not be thinking of,” Shirke told Cricinfo. Maharashtra also recently hired Shaun Williams as coach and are looking to improve their position in the Elite group. Williams was Bangladesh’s assistant coach and he could have had a role in Haque’s selection.Haque has played three one-day internationals and 12 Tests for Bangladesh and took 6 for 45 in his country’s maiden Test victory against Zimbabwe in 2005. He has been a consistent performer in Bangladesh’s domestic competitions which has impressed Shirke. “He has 15 five-wicket hauls in Bangladesh domestic cricket and it speaks highly of him,” Shirke said. “Even Sujeewa has had the experience of playing at the highest level, so we are happy with the duo’s selection.”The primary reason, according to Shirke, for picking Haque and de Silva was Maharashtra inexperienced bowling attack, especially after Patel’s departure. “Our bowling department needs to be strengthened while the new bowlers are still young. So we thought of going for experienced bowlers who can help us achieve better results”, Shirke said.Meanwhile Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Maharashtra’s former captain and senior most player, has asked for a no objection certificate from the state. “He has asked for an NoC as he wants to play elsewhere”, Shirke said.

Joe Wainman reveals Leeds are in pursuit of Hibs’ Josh Doig

Former All Leeds TV presenter Joe Wainman has dropped his verdict amid rumours Leeds United are vying to sign Hibernian left-back Josh Doig.

Marcelo Bielsa has already strengthened his defensive options by welcoming Junior Firpo to the club after concluding a £13million deal with Barcelona last month.

However, Ezgjan Alioski’s decision to turn down a new Whites deal in favour of a lucrative contract with Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ahli has resulted in Leeds boss Bielsa being keen to add further reinforcements.

JustJoe Football Show anchorman Wainman has suggested 19-year-old Doig is needed at Elland Road, especially with early injury doubts over Firpo.

Leeds have been told they will have to fork out £5million if they want to persuade Scottish Premiership side Hibernian to sell their prized asset.

However, Leeds are not the only club in the running and Hibs’ sporting director Graeme Mathie has described suitors as undervaluing Doig.

Doig made 35 appearances last season and Wainman believes the highly-rated teenager is the perfect option for Bielsa.

He told Football FanCast: “We’ve been linked with Josh Doig, who plays in Scotland.

“He is a young guy who has been coined as the next Kieran Tierney. He seems to be the one that’s on the radar because we have let a lot go. Ideally, we need another left-back.”

Unbeaten Canada romp to Under-15 title

Canada were crowned Under-15 Americas Champions in Bermuda after predictably taking care of a final-day victory against the Cayman Islands

ICC Media Release11-Aug-2008Canada were crowned Under-15 Americas Champions in Bermuda after predictably taking care of a final-day victory against the Cayman Islands at the Police Field. By crushing the luckless Cayman Islands in ruthless fashion, Canada ended the week unbeaten and deserved winners of the tournament. The Cayman Islands decision to bat first did not work out as planned as they were bundled out for a paltry 33 in just 15.3 overs, then Canada only needed 2.3 overs to knock off the runs and celebrate their championship.Canada’s Axay Patel returned extraordinary figures of 6-4-4-6, and his six-wicket haul deservedly earned him the Player-of-the-Match award. Not far behind was skipper Nitish Kumar, who continued his fine bowling form and took his total wicket haul to 16 by taking 4 for 8 in 4.3 overs. In what thus became a straight shoot-out for second place at the National Sports Centre, USA comfortably beat a disappointing Bermuda to relegate the hosts to third place. After being out in to bat, USA captain Abhijit Joshi once again showed his class with his third half-century of the event, making 68 off 104 balls. In fact his involvement with two big partnerships virtually took the game away from Bermuda at the outset. Fellow opener Vikram Valluri made a brilliant 51 off 57 balls, with six fours and a six, as together Joshi and Valluri got the innings to the ideal start with a 97-run partnership. More was to come in the shape of Player of the Match Steven Taylor, who made a sparkling 65 off only 61 balls, with 9 fours and a six, and contributed to an entertaining second-wicket partnership of 113. USA eventually finished on a daunting 236 for 7 in their 40 overs, while for Bermuda only Tre Govia had relative success with the ball in taking 3 for 39 in 7 overs. Edward DeSilva weighed in with 2 for 28 in 5 overs. In reply, Bermuda never gained any momentum, and apart from a stylish 39 from Greg Maybury, an innings compiled off 53 balls with five fours, no other Bermuda batsman could gain any real advantage over the USA bowling attack, with the spinners once again to the fore. Andrew Ajodhi took 3 for 34 in 8 overs, while Krishneal Goel took 2 for 8 in 4 overs, and Waqas Shah 2 for 25 in 5 overs, as Bermuda succumbed for 126 all out in 33.1 overs and defeat by 110 runs. The Bermuda Development XI clinched a credible fourth place with a resounding win over the Bahamas at Bailey’s Bay. Choosing to bowl first, the Development XI routed the Bahamas for 66 in 27.5 overs, and were it not for a resolute 20 not out (45 balls, 2 fours) from No. 3 Turan Brown, as well as 26 wides, it could have been much worse.Best of the Bermuda bowlers was Tre Manders, with 3 for 16 in 7 overs, with all other six bowlers used taking a wicket apiece. The Development XI needed only 7.4 overs to reach their target, with Player of the Match Lateef Trott making an explosive undefeated 41 off only 29 balls.1. Canada

Liverpool fans want Ben Woodburn to be sold

A number of Liverpool fans want Ben Woodburn to be sold permanently after he was linked with a loan move to Scottish Premiership side Hearts.

The 21-year-old has had a curious Reds career to date, initially becoming the youngest goalscorer in the club’s history after netting against Leeds United in 2016, aged just 17 years and 45 days.

Woodburn struggled to kick on from that point, however, and he has found himself loaned out to the likes of Sheffield United, Oxford United and Blackpool.

The Welshman has had a good pre-season back at Liverpool, though, and he was even on the substitutes’ bench for Saturday’s 3-0 win at Norwich City.

According to Goal‘s Neil Jones [via the journalist’s Twitter account], Hearts want to sign Woodburn on loan, eyeing him up as a shrewd addition this season.

ICC to hold teleconference on Sunday

The ICC board will have a telephone hook-up on Sunday, where a final decision on staging the Champions Trophy in Pakistan is expected

The ICC board will have a telephone hook-up on Sunday, where a final decision on staging the Champions Trophy in Pakistan is expected. Top ICC officials, including president David Morgan, vice-president Sharad Pawar and chief executive Haroon Lorgat met in Dubai on Wednesday to discuss feedback from task force briefings with stakeholders from England, Australia and New Zealand, and decided to hold a teleconference of the task team on Friday, followed by the board meeting two days later. Sri Lanka, the official alternate venue, is on stand-by.The task team has already met with officials and players’ representatives in New Zealand, Australia and England in a bid to allay their security fears, but the feedback hasn’t been encouraging. Players’ associations from New Zealand and Australia have advised their members against visiting the tournament starting on September 12, and representatives in England are still engaged in meetings to assess the situation. The boards haven’t yet taken their stance, with Cricket Australia non-committal over its team’s participation, and they are expected to convey their final decision to the ICC on Sunday.Prior to the telephone hook-ups is the task team’s visit to South Africa, whose board have been supportive of Pakistan hosting the tournament. However, Lorgat, leading the delegation, might once again find it tough to convince the players.Tony Irish, the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) chief executive, told Cricinfo the South African team had their doubts over their safety after going through a number of security assessment reports, including that of ICC’s official security consultant. Irish said he would raise these concerns during the Friday meeting. “We remain concerned about the security situation in Pakistan,” he said. “Our board is meeting with the ICC on Friday, and I will be present at that meeting to convey our concerns.”Explaining the South African situation, Irish said the securityreport submitted by Reg Dickason, an independent security consultant would not be considered as he was engaged only by the players’ associations of Australia, New Zealand and England. But Irish suggested the South African players, who are currently touring England, remain unconvinced after evaluating separate assessments by the ICC, FICA and the South African government.”We have taken note of various security assessment reports, including one from the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA), Nicholls-Steyn, the ICC consultants, and another by our own government,” he said. “I have also been in constant touch with our players (in England) over this and the mood among them is that the concerns remain.”Last week, the weekly newspaper had reported that DJ Mavimbela, the country’s high commissioner in Pakistan, had sent a letter to Cricket South Africa warning it of a risk to players’ safety in the country.
