Manchester United are set to make a formal offer for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane over the coming days.

What’s the story?

According to well-known journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils are closing in on the highly-rated 28-year-old, who is determined to leave the Bernabeu in search of a new challenge.

He tweeted: “Official bid from Man Utd for Raphaël Varane to be submitted in the next few days – Utd board ‘confident’, deal getting closer. Varane has an almost ready agreement on personal terms – he’s NOT extending with Real, he wants a new challenge. No other clubs in the race.”

News that the United hierarchy are set to make an imminent offer for Varane will surely leave the club’s supporters absolutely buzzing.

Signing a top-class partner for club captain Harry Maguire at the heart of defence is thought to be a top priority for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this summer, and the Old Trafford outfit will do just that if they can get this deal over the line.

Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe have failed to showcase their long-term credentials alongside Maguire over the last couple of years, meaning a new central defender is required ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Varane was first linked with a move to United 10 years ago, but chose Madrid instead and has gone on to establish himself as one of the world’s best players in his position.

Over the last decade, the France international has secured four Champions League crowns, three La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey and four FIFA Club World Cups in 360 appearances for the Spanish giants.

However, he’s reportedly ready for a new challenge in his career, and after entering the final year of his current contract, Madrid are prepared to sell him rather than lose one of their prized assets on a free transfer in 12 months’ time.

After securing the signature of former Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho following a lengthy pursuit, the addition of Varane would elevate United to even greater heights and pile the pressure on Solskjer to finally deliver some silverware next term.

أكد الكرواتي لوكا مودريتش، أن ريال مدريد فوق أي لاعب، حين سُئل عن تجديد عقد كيليان مبابي مع باريس سان جيرمان، وأشار إلى أن الأهم التركيز على نهائي دوري أبطال أوروبا أمام ليفربول الذي سيقام يوم السبت القادم.

وبدلاً من الانتقال إلى ريال مدريد، قرر مبابي تجديد عقده مع باريس سان جيرمان لمدة ثلاث سنوات.

وتحدث مودريتش في تصريحات لـ “كوبي” الإسبانية، وقال عن مبابي: “لا أعتقد أنه يتعين علينا التحدث عن هذا الموضوع، هناك شيء أكثر أهمية وهو نهائي وهذا كل شيء، عليك أن تغلقه ولا تتحدث عنه بعد الآن لأنه لا يهم”.

وسُئل إذا كان عدم انضمام مبابي لريال مدريد أثر عليه، ورد مودريتش: ؟: “لا”.

وعما إذا كان متفاجئا، أفاد الكرواتي: “لا، لأننا لم نكن نعرف شيئًا، لم يكن لدي أي توقعات، كان هناك الكثير من الحديث عن هذا، لمدة عام، لكننا لم نكن نعرف شيئًا؛ إذا كان سيحدث أم لا، ولهذا السبب يتعين علينا إغلاق هذا الموضوع وعدم الحديث عنه بعد الآن”.

وواصل: “لدينا نهائي دوري أبطال أوروبا، وهو أهم شيء على الإطلاق، سيستمر ريال مدريد في الصدارة، فوق أي لاعب، وأي شيء، ولا داعي للحديث مرارًا وتكرارًا”.

واستطرد مودريتش: “أعتقد أن لدينا فريقًا جيدًا للغاية، والعديد من اللاعبين الذين يمكنهم النمو كثيرًا، والذين قدموا موسماً رائعاً وربما يقدرون ما لدينا هنا، لاعبون ربما يصبح بعضهم نجومًا عظماء في المستقبل”.

وعما إذا كان يعتقد أنه من الممكن أن يظل اسم كيليان مبابي مرتبطًا بمدريد في المستقبل، ضحك مودريتش قائلاً: “لا أعرف، لا أعرف ماذا أقول لك عن هذا الموضوع حقًا ، ليست هناك حاجة للحديث عن هذا بعد الآن”.

وأردف: “لا أحد يعرف ما سيحدث في المستقبل، علينا أن نكون في الحاضر، ونفكر فيما ينتظرنا وهذا كل شيء، لا أحد يعلم ماذا سيحدث في المستقبل”.

Everton have shown an interest in Manchester United’s Anthony Martial but his wages could put them off, according to a report from the Daily Star.

United want to offload Martial ‘as soon as possible’, with the arrival of Jadon Sancho at Old Trafford making him ‘surplus to requirements’.

Martial currently takes home £250,000 per week and potential suitors like Spurs, Everton, West Ham and Aston Villa are ‘not interested’ in making him a top earner.

The Frenchman had enjoyed a fine 2019/20 campaign, recording 35 direct goal contributions (23 goals, 12 assists) in 48 appearances across all competitions.

O Atlético-MG entrou nesta segunda-feira com um recurso no Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva de Minas Gerais contra a pena de quatro jogos de suspensão aplicada ao atacante Fred, por ter agredido no rosto ozagueiro Manoel, do Cruzeiro, no clássico pela 10ª rodada do Campeonato Mineiro. O jogador foi indiciado pela Procuradoria no artigo 254 A do Código Brasileiro de Justiça Desportiva e recebeu pena mínima de quatro jogos.

Até o momento, Fred já cumpriu duas partidas de suspensão: contra a Caldense, em Poços de Caldas, e contra URT, no Mineirão, pela semifinal do Mineiro.

O julgamento do recurso está marcado para o dia 25. Com isso, o atacante cumprirá o terceiro jogo da punição no domingo, às 16h, contra a URT, no Independência, pela semifinal do Estadual. O Galo precisa de um empate para ir à decisão. Nesta quarta-feira, ele estará em campo contra o Libertad-PAR, em Assunção, pela terceira rodada do Grupo 6 da Taça Libertadores.

O departamento jurídico do Galo descartou entrar com pedido de efeito suspensivo agora. Isso porque o clube pretende contar com o atacante nos dois jogos da final, no dias 30 de abril e 7 de maio, caso avance. Former Tottenham Hotspur star Graham Roberts insists that Milan Skriniar would have been one of his top targets this summer, although it does not appear that he will be joining the club.

Spurs are reported to be in talks to sign Cristian Romero from Atalanta for a fee of around €55m (£46.8m).

They are also reported to be pursuing Takehiro Tomiyasu of Bologna, who can play as a right-back and a centre-back, as well as a defensive midfielder.

Spurs were reported to be interested in Skriniar last summer, with Steve Hitchen travelling to Italy in an attempt to strike an agreement.

It remains to be seen if Spurs will make a potential move for the Inter Milan defender this summer but it seems unlikely given the pursuit of separate defenders.

But Roberts believes that Skriniar, who is valued at £54m by Transfermarkt, would have been an excellent signing, and admits that he would have placed him at the very top of his shortlist.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “I think last year we could probably have got him for 40 million. I know Inter need to sell because they’ve had to get rid of Conte and people like that because of the money situation.

“You never know but I would say he would have been one of my top targets, I don’t believe we need to start messing the team up.”
