Out-of-favour Saqlain excels in selectors absence

15-Mar-2002Saqlain Mushtaq picked up a wicket and scooped up four excellentcatches as PIA beat Karachi Whites by six wickets in the National Oneday Cricket Championship at National Stadium Thursday. The home team, batting first, posted a decent 219 for seven in 50overs. PIA, the former champions, hardly raised a sweat when theyreached the victory target in 38 overs. But the irony was none of theselectors was present at the ground to see Saqlain put up aperformance that was a slap on the face of the people who had droppedhim from the Asian Test Championship final.Wasim Bari, chairman of selectors, came late in the afternoon afterall the action was complete. Mohsin Khan, one of the paid selectors, continued to remain a missing figure as he has been since the start ofthe season. The selectors’ decision not to watch proceedings involving PIA seemsstrange as there are at least four players on whom either there arefitness or form doubts and can walk into the national team anytime.Saqlain was tight and economical as ever conceding 45 runs off his 10overs. But the catches off Fahadullah and Farhan Iqbal, the latter offhis won bowling, reflected how seriously he was taking his cricket andthe improvement he has made in his fielding.Saqlain held a running catch while diving forward at mid-off to endthe innings of Fahadullah and then took a acrobatic catch off his ownbowling to terminate the knock of Farhan Iqbal.Saqlain was not the only PIA player to dominate the show. Wasim Akrambowled his heart out on a placid track and under testing conditionswhile Azhar Mahmood bowled nicely to concede 32 runs off his nineovers.Abdul Razzaq was belted for 59 runs from his nine overs while ShoaibMalik’s 18 deliveries cost him 23 runs. Karachi’s innings wasdominated by two half centuries and a 49 by opener Maisam Hasnain whohit four boundaries in his 81-ball innings. Zeeshan Pervez scored 53but took 102 balls while Mohammad Masroor hit a rapid 46-ball 53 withsix boundaries.PIA, in their target chase, was set an ideal platform when openersGhulam Ali and Faisal Iqbal added 115 for the first wicket. Thepartnership ended when Faisal was out after scoring a 43-ball 38 withfive boundaries. But Ghulam Ali remained punishing, clobbering 10boundaries in his 79-ball 67. Yasir Hameed chipped in with 35 whileskipper Moin Khan finished the match in style by slamming fourboundaries in his nine-ball 19.

Crystal Palace will appoint Lucien Favre

Crystal Palace are set to appoint former Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre as their new manager after he agreed terms on a three-year deal.

What’s the story?

The Eagles have been searching for Roy Hodgson’s successor for over a month, but the pursuit appears to be drawing to a close after the 63-year-old held positive talks with the club’s hierarchy over the weekend.

According to Ed Aarons of The Guardian, sources close to Favre revealed he is impressed with the plans put forward by the south London outfit and hs appointment is expected to be announced in the coming days after securing a work permit.

Fans will be buzzing

The retired Switzerland midfielder was identified as the primary target by Palace chairman Steve Parish after negotiations with ex-Wolves boss Nuno Espírito Santo collapsed at the last minute.

Favre will be just the second overseas manager in the capital club’s history after the nightmare 77-day spell of Frank De Boer back in 2017.

Hodgson replaced the Dutchman and brought stability to Selhurst Park throughout his four-year stint at the helm, but the arrival of Favre will be a much-needed boost.

With over a dozen players set to become free agents at the end of the month, talisman Wilfried Zaha angling for a move away, and creative force Eberechi Eze out injured until the new year, a daunting task awaits the tactician.

However, Favre’s appointment will be seen as a major coup by Parish and co. He’s cultivated a solid reputation for playing an exciting, attacking brand of football and has overseen the development of several top young talents.

After guiding French outfit Nice to a highly impressive third-place finish in Ligue 1, he took charge of Dortmund, recording consecutive second-place finishes in his only two full seasons at the Signal Iduna Park.

In a managerial career spanning three decades, Favre has racked up 796 games in charge of various sides, achieving a win rate of 49%.

Therefore, the Palace supporters will surely be buzzing at his imminent arrival. The combination of exciting football, experience and a history of developing young players is an ideal cocktail for the Eagles, and he should bring a new wave of hope and optimism to south London.

Pundit says Jonjoe Kenny won’t leave Everton - Exclusive

Marcus Bent believes that Jonjoe Kenny will be competing for a regular place at Everton next season despite a recent story suggesting that Arsenal want him.

According to the Daily Mail, Mikel Arteta is keen on signing the young right-back, who spent the campaign on loan at Celtic.

Having played just 80 minutes of Premier League football before January, Kenny headed up north of the border to Celtic.

It proved an efficient loan spell for the 24-year-old at Parkhead, playing every minute of Celtic’s 16 matches in all competitions following his arrival – providing four assists in total, two of which came in the same game in a 3-0 win over Falkirk in the Scottish Cup.

Kenny will now return to Goodison Park to compete with Seamus Coleman for the number one right-back spot in what would be his last season with Everton, with his contract running out next summer.

Despite those Arsenal claims, Bent exclusively told Football FanCast that his short-term future remains on Merseyside:

“He did really well at Celtic, but speaking to Everton, they said that Arsenal won’t make a move for him, so he will end up back at Everton.”

A questão do entrosamento é importante.

Acompanhe a seguir as opiniões:

MAURO BETING (Esporte Interativo)
“São números muito ruins. Claro que o Gilberto chegou agora e não pode ser responsabilizado por isso, mas os números são fracos e o desempenho no ataque também é ruim. Defensivamente, o time está longe do ideal. Muito longe do Flamengo e até do Botafogo, que não estava “nem aí” para a Taça Guanabara e do Fluminense, que esteve mais presente, mas também não jogou bem contra o Madureira. Dá para entender um pouco, tem desentrosamento e mudança. Mas é o momento de reestruturação do Vasco e o próprio Gilberto está entrando nesse momento da equipe. Acho que o Gilberto tem algumas razões, mas só isso não justifica o desempenho fraco da equipe do Vasco”

JOÃO CARLOS ASSUMPÇÃO (Colunista do L!)

Just a quick question

Cricinfo05-Apr-2002PROVINCIAL NAMESJust a quick question. Why have you two teams in your domestic cricket carrying the name Mashonaland? It would seem to me that if you were to have two teams operating out of the same province (granted that Mashonaland is the strength of Zimbabwean cricket) then it would be both more marketable and professional if the name Mashonaland `A’ was dropped as it implies that this is a second-string (read -rate) team. In my humble opinion I feel that the names for these two sides should be Mashonaland and Harare rather than the `A’ team, this being an accurate reflection on the current strength of cricket in Zimbabwe. Also we in Australia support Zimbabwe in its current time of political turmoil. Our thoughts and prayers are with the peace-loving Zimbabwean people during this time and can only hope that a peaceful outcome arises with the majority support of all Zimbabweans. Our tour may be off for now but we can guarantee that we will be back in more certain times to help in the development of Zimbabwean cricket. We in Australia are both perplexed and surprised by the occurrences in your beautiful land.Marty Lauritsen (Geraldton, West Australia)THANKS TO ZIMBABWE: JAMES CORNFORD OF MIDLANDSCan I take this opportunity to say many thanks to the ZCU, and all the cricketing fraternity in Zimbabwe, for all the help and friendship they have given to James, my son. He told me he has gained a great deal from the six-month stay in Zim, socially and of course in cricketing terms. We are all grateful for James to play at Harare Sports Club and to be helped at the Academy by David Houghton, and all the good people in the Midlands.I must say that to give James the opportunity to play first-class cricket in Zim, we consider it an honour. I sincerely hope that your super country will resolve its problems soon, and perhaps we might visit one day soon. So thank you again and good luck to all involved in your cricketing set-up. Please keep your super Zimbabwe cricket online site going.Bill Cornford (Cheshire, England)TRIBUTE TO CAMPBELLI wrote a little something, it’s about a certain ADR Campbell. Here it is.Alistair Campbell is man out of all time. To look at his statistics would be to look at another man. His average belies the batsman that he is. After all, were all cricket to be done on a statistical basis ADR Campbell would have been dropped, and never recalled, after approximately 1994, but this is where the `Lies, Damned lies and statistics’ effect comes into its element. On his day never has Zimbabwe produced a more devastating batsman (except Davy Houghton or Graeme Hick). The details of his individual innings can be found elsewhere, but as for the man, his record shows that we need not be a Bradman, we need not the statistics to prove that we are a batsman of international quality. We are all but human.John Meffen (country not stated)

West Brom: Arsenal register interest in Sam Johnstone

West Brom will be targeting promotion back into the Premier League at the first time of asking this term, under the watchful eye of Valerien Ismael.

The Baggies were relegated back into the Championship after just one season in the top-flight, in what was a disappointing campaign for the club’s supporters to witness.

But with Ismael now in the managerial hot-seat, West Brom are well-equipped to return to the promised land relatively swiftly, providing the newly-appointed boss can get his philosophies across to his current first-team squad.

One player who might not be with West Brom for too much longer is goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, with the shot-stopper being linked with a summer departure from The Hawthorns.

Johnstone has previously been a transfer target for West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur, and he has now emerged on Arsenal’s radar, as they look to add much-needed competition for Bernd Leno between the posts moving forwards, according to The Daily Star.

The Gunners had previously been targeting a move for Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale, but are seemingly being put off by the Blades’ £25million valuation of the former AFC Bournemouth youngster.

Johnstone is evidently their next best alternative, with the England international catching the eye with some strong performances for West Brom in recent months, despite their relegation from the Premier League this term.

The shot-stopper kept six clean sheets in the 2020/21 season from his 37 appearances, and you couldn’t blame him for being tempted by a move to the Emirates Stadium ahead of the upcoming league campaign.

Praise from pundits

Johnstone’s strong performances haven’t gone unnoticed in recent months, with the goalkeeper earning his senior debut for the England national side.

He kept a clean sheet on his debut as well, as England beat Romania in a friendly match before they got their European Championships campaign underway.

Johnstone produced a stunning save from point-blank range to keep the Romanians out during the match, with Gary Lineker labelling the save as ‘sensational’.

It’d be a sizeable blow for the Baggies

West Brom have been heavily reliant on Johnstone in recent seasons, and the 28-year-old won them important points on his own at times.

He kept 14 clean sheets in their promotion-winning campaign in the 2019/20 season, and you would have to back him to replicate that in the 2021/22 campaign under the management of Valerien Ismael.

With David Button being their second-choice option between the posts during last year’s campaign, one would imagine that West Brom will be looking to find a better alternative to step into the starting XI in the near future.

But goalkeepers with the pedigree that Johnstone has are hard to find, and he’d certainly leave a sizeable void in the Baggies’ team if he was to depart. It will be a massive blow to the new manager if he does lose the England international.

And in other news, West Brom are interested in signing a striker from Premier League giants
