Southampton linked with Adam Armstrong

Southampton have been linked with a move for Blackburn Rovers striker Adam Armstrong recently and he could be a superb addition to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side this summer.

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Express, Southampton, West Ham and Newcastle United are all keen on the English forward, who hit 28 goals for Blackburn in the Championship last season.

It is suggested that the Saints are ready to bid £15m for the 24-year-old striker, with Hasenhuttl keen to add a striker, a full-back and a midfielder to his squad ahead of next season.

Would he be a good signing?

Armstrong has been hugely impressive for Blackburn since joining on a permanent deal from Newcastle in the summer of 2018, with 64 goals and 19 assists to his name in 160 appearances for the Ewood Park outfit.

Last season was comfortably his best as a professional, as he contributed 28 goals and five assists in just 40 Championship appearances for the Lancashire side, which helped him average a superb 7.15 rating for his performances from WhoScored.

If he had produced the same performances in Southampton’s side last season, he would have comfortably been rated as their best player, which certainly suggest that he could be a worthwhile addition to Hasenhuttl’s side ahead of next season.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

The Austrian is certainly lacking in quality depth up front, as the Saints struggled in the absence of Danny Ings last season, with youngsters Michael Obafemi and Dan N’Lundulu both given very few opportunities to impress in attack.

Considering Ings has been heavily linked with a move away, signing a young striker such as Armstrong would make a lot of sense for the Saints, as he could step up should the former Liverpool man depart, either this summer or next summer when his contract at St Mary’s expires.

Hasenhuttl also favours smaller, pacy strikers in his side, as evidenced by Ings, Che Adams and Nathan Tella all featuring there this season, so the Austrian would definitely love a striker in the mould of Armstrong next season.

Given Armstrong’s superb performances in the Championship both this season and last, he deserves a chance to show what he can do in the Premier League, so Martin Semmens should definitely look to bring the “special” striker in this summer.

And, in other news… Semmens should seal Southampton swoop for 21 y/o tipped to become “one of the best in Europe”

Primeiro, pensaremos no Campeonato Gaúcho. Depois, vamos pensar em colocar o Inter no lugar que nunca deveria ter saído. O ambiente é muito bom e o grupo é unido. Isso vai ajudar durante o ano.

Bell: We're going to prove a lot of people wrong

When Ian Bell played for England in the Under-19 World Cup in SriLanka he was new to the big league

Anand Vasu07-Jan-2001When Ian Bell played for England in the Under-19 World Cup in SriLanka he was new to the big league. He was looking around very keenly, learning what he could and generally keeping to himself. Had you methim then, you would have described him as a polite but shy young man.Since then he has come a long way. Playing in Warwickshire has donethe young man’s confidence a world of good. As captain of the Englandside that’s touring India, he has to do a lot more than just deliverthe goods out in the middle. Talking exclusively to thiscorrespondent, Bell revealed how he was more mature than ever before, and ready to move on to bigger things.AV: One win and one loss so far on tour. How do you feel?IB: Very well. We’ve been looked after well so far. We feel good as aside, we feel like we’re playing good cricket. Our batsmen have got inand made 30s and 40s, but haven’t gone on to make big hundreds. Wehaven’t got enough runs in the first innings, and have collapsed underpressure in the second innings.AV: Some of the players have been in a bit of trouble playing thespinners, coming down the wicket and getting stumped with the ballturning away. You don’t seem to have that problem. Did playing insimilar conditions in the Under-19 World Cup help on this count?IB: It was a big learning curve in Sri Lanka. Even though the trip wasnot particularly successful for us, we came away with a lot ofexperience. Playing spin bowling is something I’ve done atWarwickshire. That’s something people have helped me with from anearly age. I must have been 12 or 13 when they started us off onspinning mats which really did turn and bounce. That’s probably why Ifeel confident enough to use my feet, either against the left armspinner or the off spinner.AV: We’ve heard the England management say more than once that theresult of this tour is not of utmost importance. It’s the experiencethat counts. As captain I’m sure you’d like to win all the Tests, orat least the series…IB: Yeah, that’s for sure. It’s not easy to come to India and win aseries. It’s definitely a feather in your cap if you can come to Indiaand win a series, not just for the captain but for the whole side. Ifyou can be successful in places like India and Pakistan you’re goingto go back to England with a good record. Then people are going toactually look out for you. That is a great chance for everyone in theside. If you do succeed here, you can get into your county sides andthen there are steps forward.AV: You’ve come down with two left arm spinners. That leaves you withless variety than you would like. Monty Panesar who has been bowlingso well in the nets has looked short of his best out in the middle…IB: Monty has bowled well in the nets and hasn’t quite been at hisbest in the middle. He’s normally a very bubbly character out in themiddle. In the last game he was ill. Perhaps he was a bit dehydratedfrom being in the field so long in the first innings. That was a bitof a shame. When he gets into rhythm he’s a very, very good bowler. Weneed him to get into rhythm pretty soon and when he does, I’m surehe’ll take a lot of wickets.AV: With two left arm spinners in the side you seem to have taken tobowling off spin…IB: That’s right I’m normally a little seam bowler. Back in Englandwhere the conditions help, I do a bit of seam bowling. When I bowledin the nets here, I took a couple of wickets and rolled my arm over inthe match. Luckily one turned and I got a wicket!AV: Your strength will still be your mediumpacers, McGarry seems to bequick and Bishop as well…IB: They are both generally very good seamers. Hopefully they’ll workwell together. Andrew (McGarry) has got a bit of pace and bowlsstraight. He has a good bouncer and has caused a bit of trouble withthat. Justin (Bishop) does swing the ball very late and can get a lotof LBWs if he bowls the right line.AV: When batting in Indian conditions, you have to make runs in quicktime. If you are looking to just survive, then you’re bound to get aball that turns and jumps that surprises you. Will you be looking togo after the bowling?IB: The mental toughness side of it here is very important as well. You are going to get a good ball that turns and bounces. You just haveto take every ball as it comes. If you get one that surprises you, then you just have to forget it and play the next ball. If you bat inthe last innings then the wicket is going to be worn and you’re goingto get a bit of that. We have to combat that with all the things wehave learnt in our drills. We have to sweep the ball well, that’simportant. We have to look to play a long innings. We have to bat allday and get big hundreds. That’s the key for us. If we post totals of350 and more, that’s going to help us to force a win.AV: There’s a lot of emphasis on adapting to Indian conditions, learning to play the spinners on responsive tracks and things likethat. But it’s still very important to play to your strengths…IB: That’s right. We have been working hard on that. How to play spinand sticking to your strengths. If you do hit over the top, well thendo so. If you sweep well, then play that shot. We’ve talked about thatin every situation. After every match and session we’ve learntsomething. We know that we’re going to prove a lot of people wrong, come out and do really well.

Man City suffer Romelu Lukaku transfer blow

Manchester City’s hopes of signing Inter striker Romelu Lukaku this summer appear to be over after he confirmed he would be staying with the Serie A champions.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been regularly linked with the Belgian forward ahead of the summer transfer window after his superb season with the Nerazzurri, with his goals a key factor in Inter winning the Scudetto.

Despite the title win, the Italian giants are in serious financial trouble and it seems likely that plenty of first team players will depart the San Siro this summer, with title-winning manager Antonio Conte having already left.

However, Lukaku confirmed recently that he would be staying with Inter this summer, saying: “I am staying. I’ve already had contact with the man who will become our new manager.

“Maybe I shouldn’t say that yet. It was a very positive conversation. There’s also the challenge of doing it again [winning Serie A]. I feel good at Inter.”

The former Manchester United man is clearly settled at Inter, having contributed an impressive 64 goals and 16 assists in just 95 appearances for the Serie A side since his switch from Old Trafford, whilst he also seems to have been won over by newly-appointed manager Simone Inzaghi.

Although City enjoyed a superb campaign which saw them taste success in the Premier League and Carabao Cup, amid falling short in the FA Cup semi-final and Champions League final, it could definitely be argued that Guardiola’s side lacked a natural goalscorer such as Lukaku.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan topped the scoring charts in the top flight with just 13 last season, with main striking options Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero managing only 13 between them in the 2020/21 Premier League campaign.

Considering that the Argentine has now joined Barcelona following the expiry of his contract, City definitely need a striker ahead of next season, as there were several games last term where they lacked a physical presence and poacher inside the box.

Guardiola is certainly a big fan of the £90m-rated Lukaku, too, having dubbed him “world class” in 2018, and his superb performances with Inter suggest that he could have been a superb addition at the Etihad this summer.

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936″]

Therefore, it is a huge transfer blow for City that he will seemingly be staying at Inter next season, and City will have to turn their attentions elsewhere if they want a top-class goalscorer to replace Aguero.

West Ham now eyeing Djuricic

According to a report by Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, writing on his website, West Ham United are now eyeing Sassuolo attacker Filip Djuricic.

The Lowdown: West Ham on the market…

Booking their spot in the Europa League group stage for 2021/2022 after a surprising season, West Ham have turned their attention to the transfer market.

As per Claret & Hugh, manager David Moyes has set out his priorities for the summer in a permanent deal for Jesse Lingard, a new striker and top class centre-half.

However, alternative sources claim West Ham are eyeing players in other positions too, like between the sticks for instance, with Sky reporter Di Marzio now coming out with his information on the Hammers’ summer plans.

The Latest: West Ham now eyeing Djuricic…

As per the Italian, West Ham have now set their sets on the 31-cap Serbia international alongside Southampton.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is also stated that the Serie A side have ‘received offers from England’ for the player as the Irons and the Saints both hold an interest.

However, as explained, the attacking midfielder would ‘prefer’ to stay in Italy despite interest from the Premier League.

The Verdict: Look elsewhere…

Djuricic seemed destined for greatness at the start of his career, regarded as one of Serbia’s finest talents and dubbed the ‘Balkan Cruyff” (Goal).

However, it is arguable he hasn’t exactly lived up to that tag given he is plying his trade with Sassuolo, with the 29-year-old also approaching his twilight years.

Scoring just five goals and assisting four others in 27 league starts last season (WhoScored), we believe Djuricic should be a hard pass with plenty of better targets in his position out there for the Hammers to pursue.

Arnold steers Sri Lanka to a comfortable victory

Sri Lanka won the first game of a three-match One-Day International seriesby five wickets at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium today

Charlie Austin23-Mar-2001Sri Lanka won the first game of a three-match One-Day International seriesby five wickets at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium today. It wasan extraordinary day in Dambulla’s rich history, as the town, famed for itsBuddhist cave temples and previously dependent upon the vegetable trade, staged its inaugural international cricket match after six months of hecticconstruction work. The working lives of thousands of local residents of this normally sleepytown were transformed last September when the ambitious, some say foolhardy,Sri Lankan cricket board decided to build the country’s eighth internationalvenue on 65 acres of dry land jungle. Local farmers threw down their hoes tobecome groundsmen and builders laboured for 155 mad, long days. Thus, when the inaugural international match was played today, crowdsflocked to the stadium, most through the ticket gates, but many also pouredthrough a hole in the fence after the start of play. The stands, literallybursting at the seams in a state of half completion, vibrated withexcitement, and the band, precariously perched on the top of the hastilyfinished Grand Stand, hardly took a breath all day.Unfortunately the cricket, despite the best efforts of Sanath Jaysuriya, whoblasted 39 from 35 balls, failed to match the atmosphere of the occasion, asthe ball dominated the bat and England were bundled out for just 143 in 48.5overs. Sri Lanka then threatened to recreate the tension of the Testseries, as they lost three wickets for eight runs in the middle order, before Russel Arnold (39*) and Marvan Atapattu (40), both of whom registereda pair in the Third Test, guided Sri Lanka home.Indeed a low-scoring affair had been predicted. Andy Akinson, a renownedgroundsman-cum-international pitch consultant, was given just eight weeks toprepare the playing surface and, although he completed his task – thanks inpart to 500 local women, who painstakingly transplanted individual blades ofgrass into the square – even he had no idea how the dry brown would behaveon the eve on the match. In the event it surpassed expectations and though slow in pace and slightlyvariable in bounce, England should have scored more runs having won the tossand batted first when the pitch was at its best. They, however, struggledagainst Sri Lanka’s spinners after Nuwan Zoysa had nipped out both AlecStewart and Graeme Hick in the early overs.Kumar Dharmasena and Russel Arnold both bowled tightly after the successfulburst from the new ball pair and Arnold also picked up the wicket of MarcusTrescothick for 21, as the broad-shouldered left-hander tried to manoeuvre astraight ball into the leg side and was bowled. It was Muttiah Muralitharanthough that condemned England to their poor total.Sri Lanka’s magical spinner, spurred on by game taunts from teammates thatHarbhajan Singh had now displaced him as the premier spinner in the worldand still fuming at perceived umpiring injustice during the England Testseries, returned to his normal match-winning mould, as he took four wicketsin the innings and three in a crucial first spell.England, having slipped to 75 for three midway through their innings, weretrying to rebuild when Michael Vaughan, who made his ODI debut when hereplaced Nick Knight this morning, dragged his foot while sweeping and wasstumped for nine. Andrew Flintoff was also stumped in Muralitharan’s nextover and Craig White was deceived by the “other one” to be caught at slipfor a first ball duck. England had slumped to 97 for six.Graham Thorpe, acting England captain in the absence of the injured NasserHussain, carried on where he left off in the Test series and once again theSri Lankans were unable to dismiss him, as he scored an unbeaten 62 off 107balls.Sanath Jayasuriya, who chastised his players this week for theirirresponsibility in the Test series, started the Sri Lanka innings with abang. He hit ten runs off Andrew Caddick’s first over and raced to 39 off 35balls. The innings, however, then started to falter as England’s fast bowlers – four of whom played in the game in case the pitch played as badly as it could – probed away.Romesh Kaluwitharana had already been dismissed, caught behind as he triedto drive an Andrew Caddick away swinger, when Jayasuriya was unlucky to beadjudged leg before wicket to a delivery from Alan Mullally that was slidingdown the leg side. Mahela Jayawardene was an unlucky recipient of a deliveryof unusual bounce from Darren Gough and Kumar Sangakkara hung his bat out todry to become the third Sri Lankan batsman caught behind.Sri Lanka were 58 for four and after their woeful second innings performanceat the Sinhalese Sports Club, the game looked to be back on an even keel. With the pitch now getting lower and lower, Arnold and Atapattu appliedthemselves well, however, as they added 70 runs in 132 balls. By the time Atapattu was trapped lbw for 40 by a short delivery that crept along the ground, Sri Lanka were home and dry.

Moin dropped as blundering selectors play musical chairs

The blundering Pakistan cricket selectors continued to play musicalchairs with next month’s England tour aspirants when they named a 20-man provisional list on Tuesday instead of naming the final 16

Samiul Hasan25-Apr-2001The blundering Pakistan cricket selectors continued to play musicalchairs with next month’s England tour aspirants when they named a 20-man provisional list on Tuesday instead of naming the final 16.All the “walking wounded” that toured New Zealand but forced to returnincluding former captain Wasim Akram were named in the provisionallist. The sole casualty being Moin Khan who had lost his captaincy toa lucky Waqar Younis earlier this month.”Moin has been left out because of his inconsistent performance,”chairman of selectors Wasim Bari explained without elaborating if itwas his wicket keeping or batting that led to his ouster. To benefit from Moin’s unceremonious exit was another former captainRashid Latif who last represented Pakistan in Harare, Zimbabwe, on the1997-98 tour. Rashid is the only wicket keeper in the list, whichguarantees him a third successive tour to England for which the teamleaves on May 2.Inconsistent Imran Nazir and Shahid Afridi, who were described by theselectors as one-day specialists and were not considered for the Testseries in New Zealand after the limited overs rubber, were retained.In-and-out, Mohammad Wasim, who has played 18 Tests since making hisdebut in 1996, was also recalled after 12 months in wilderness. Also amongst the probables was paceman “joyrider” Shoaib Akhtar whosefitness was unknown though his controversial bowling action wascleared by the University of Western Australia.”The formal official report on his (Shoaib), will be forwarded by thePCB’s bowling advisors for onward submission to ICC,” a PCB statementsaid. On a day of chaos and confusion, powerless chief selector Wasim Bari, said in the afternoon that he had submitted a squad of 16 to thePakistan Cricket Board (PCB) advisory council for approval andannouncement. However, the PCB in the evening came up with the names of 20 probablesclaiming that the squad would be finalized in the next couple of daysbecause the medical reports of several players were still beingawaited.Later in the evening, Bari took a somersault when he claimed he had,in fact, submitted the provisional squad and not the 16- man team.Nevertheless, Bari left the PCB officials red-faced when he confirmedthat he had been conveyed by the cricket managers in Lahore that allthe players were available for selection after clearing medical tests.Contradictions after contradictions and repeated communication gapbetween the selectors and the PCB hierarchy once again reflect the sadstate affairs of Pakistan cricket. If there is no planning and coordination amongst the administrators themselves, to demand cohesionand unity from the team is perhaps asking for too much.Brig Munawwar Rana, the director of the PCB, said from Lahore that themedical reports on some players were expected within the next 48 hoursafter which the team would be announced. He, however, didn’t reveal the names of the players whose selectionswere subject to medical clearance.Wasim Akram had appeared before the three-man medical team on Sundaywhile Moin had cleared his medical test on April 13. The remainingplayers could be Yousuf Youhana, Azhar Mahmood and PCB’s blue-eyed boyShoaib Akhtar.Sequence of events confirm apprehensions that the PCB administratorswere adamant to show Moin the door. Initially named skipper until thetour to England, Moin was removed as captain on fitness grounds eventhough only two days before, he had been given a clean bill of healthby the medical experts of the board and along with Wasim Akram alsoappeared in the on-going one-day competition. The statistics of Moin, who was also dropped in 1993 before regaininghis number No 1 slot in 1996, in the last 16 months doesn’t justifythe claims of the selectors.Moin, who was bestowed with lifetime achievement award by the PCB lastyear, in 11 Tests as captain, scored 369 runs at 24.60 whileaccounting for 28 batsmen behind the wickets. In 63 Tests, Moin scored2,493 runs and dismissed 134 batsmen. In 190 one-day internationalsMoin has scored 2,853 runs. His 256 dismissal is a world record. But the factor that played the decisive role in his dismissal was thathe made more enemies than friends in the PCB. Moin repeatedly objectedto outside interference in team matters which didn’t please PCBofficials and the selectors.Needless to say that the PCB sacked two selectors earlier this yearwhen they protested against outside interference. Last month anotherselector Sikander Bakth also resigned. The unnecessary delay in the announcement of the 16-man squadobviously smells rat. And the bone of contention or debate is noneother than Wasim Akram.Sources within the PCB have confirmed that skipper Waqar Younis, oncedeclared by the PCB chief himself that he (Waqar) was not a certainityin the team, was in no compromising mood and flatly refused to acceptWasim in the squad. Sources say Waqar feels that Wasim’s inclusion inthe team will not allow the skipper to enjoy total command over theaffairs.”The PCB are trying to buy time, hoping that they will convince Waqarto change his heart,” sources said.Wasim’s allout effort to get into the squad has helped him retain hisplace in the 20. But whether he would find a place in the touringside? Only time will tell.Provisional squad (in bracket are age and number of Testsplayed):Saeed Anwar (32, 52), Imran Farhat (19, 3), Mohammad Wasim (23, 18),Imran Nazir (20, 5), Shahid Afridi (21, 11), Faisal Iqbal (20, 3),Inzamam-ul-Haq (vice-captain) (31, 72), Yousuf Youhana (26, 30),Younis Khan (24, 12), Salim Elahi (25, 8), Abdur Razzaq (22, 12),Azhar Mahmood (26, 19), Wasim Akram (34, 100), Waqar Younis (30, 71),Shoaib Akhtar (26, 15), Fazle Akbar (21, 4), Mohammad Sami (20, 2),Saqlain Mushtaq (24, 34), Mushtaq Ahmad (30, 50), Rashid Latif (wicketkeeper) (32, 22).
