Liverpool were recently linked with a move for Folarin Balogun but it seems as if the Arsenal striker is set to join a European side.

What’s the word?

It was originally suggested by David Ornstein in The Athletic that the Reds could target the 19-year-old in the summer when his contract with the Gunners expires.

However, it was revealed earlier this week that the forward, who has been prolific at youth level for Arsenal, is close to signing a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club.

Transfer blow for LFC?

Balogun has been superb for Arsenal’s youth teams in recent years, having scored 38 goals in 41 games for the U18s whilst he has 17 goals and six assists in the same number of games for the U23s.

The New York-born forward has broken through into Mikel Arteta’s side this season in the Europa League and has managed an impressive two goals and one assist in five games for the North London club.

Arteta spoke publicly about how impressive Balogun has been recently, perhaps in an attempt to convince him to stay, but it seems as if he will depart the Emirates Stadium outfit at the end of the season.

The Spanish manager said:

“His progression and the use of the time that he’s had with us has been incredible. He will keep having chances while he’s with us.”

The Merseyside club have enjoyed great success in promoting young strikers into their first team, with the likes of Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen establishing themselves as Liverpool greats from the academy, whilst Rhian Brewster was recently sold to Sheffield United for £23.5 million after being poached from Chelsea’s academy set up.

Balogun certainly seems to have the potential to follow in the footsteps of these former Liverpool players, but it seems as if the Reds have fallen short in their hopes of signing the American as they had the disadvantage of not being able to negotiate with the 19-year-old until his contract with Arsenal expires, something which will surely frustrate Jurgen Klopp.

It will be interesting to see how Balogun progresses if he does end up leaving Arsenal and whether the Reds end up rueing not being able to bring him in, as he surely would have been the ideal replacement for Divock Origi as Roberto Firmino’s back-up at Anfield.

وكشف أشرف صبحي موقفه في تصريحات خاصة لـ “بطولات”: “أرسلنا بالفعل خطابًا إلى النادي الأهلي للرد على الخطاب الموجه لنا”.

وواصل أشرف صبحي توضيحه: “وزارة الرياضة أكدت خلال الخطاب أنها تحترم النادي الأهلي، وتؤكد أيضًا دعمها الكامل ومساندتها لكل الإجراءات القانونية التي سيتخذها الأهلي بشأن أزمة العامري فاروق”.

وأتم وزير الرياضة: “أرسلنا للجنة الأولمبية خطابًا لاستكمال إجراءاتها القانونية بشأن الأهلي، لأنها صاحبة القرار حسب لائحة النادي”.

وكان الأهلي قد أرسل صباح اليوم خطابًا إلى كلٍ من الدكتور أشرف صبحي وزير الشباب والرياضة، والمهندس هشام حطب رئيس اللجنة الأولمبية المصرية، لاعتماد فوز العامري فاروق بمنصب نائب رئيس النادي بالتزكية، وفقًا للوائح والقوانين.

Despite Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s recent departure to Bayer Leverkusen, Manchester United still have a lot of work to do over the course of the January transfer window.

The Red Devils find themselves in the Premier League title race this season, and if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side do intend to get their hands on the elusive trophy then they should also look to offload a large chunk of the deadwood that is bogging them down.

What’s the word?

According to Argentine journalist Nahuel Ferreira, via Sport Witness, £16m man Marcos Rojo ‘seeks to terminate his contract’ with the Red Devils.

Whilst several reports have suggested Boca Juniors are leading the race to sign the former Argentina international on a free transfer, it’s claimed Mexican side Cruz Azul have held initial discussions with his representatives over a possible move.

However, Ferreira suggested United have still yet to decide whether or not they will allow Rojo to leave in this transfer window, although the club have apparently confirmed his current deal will not be renewed.

What are they waiting for?

Ed Woodward has done a pretty decent job when it comes to shifting some of the deadwood with the likes of Fosu-Mensah, Alexis Sanchez and Chris Smalling all heading for the Old Trafford exit in recent times.

However, much of the same old mediocrity still remains to this day, none more so than the out of favour defender Rojo, who has fallen down the pecking order under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and is quite frankly a waste of time, energy and resources.

Once tipped for greatness by Louis van Gaal – say no more – it’s fair to say that Rojo’s career hasn’t quite panned out as he might have expected.

The 30-year-old, who has to be seen as wasting the Glazers’ money considering he earns around £80,000-per-week at Old Trafford, has not made a first-team appearance for more than a year and has been deemed surplus to requirements by Solskjaer with his last outing coming by way of the 3-1 victory over Brighton back in November 2019.

Solskjaer could look to offload the £5.4m-rated outcast and use his excessive wages to sign another big-name defender, with Dayot Upamecano reportedly at the top of his list of transfer targets.

It’s sad to say it, but the stats don’t lie and it seems like he’s served his purpose at Old Trafford. He hasn’t played a Premier League game in over a year and has made just one appearance in the Super Liga this season during an injury-stricken campaign in his homeland.

Just last season, he only averaged two clearances per game in three top-flight appearances, which is way below the six he was averaging in the 2017-18 season and the 6.8 he was producing the season prior to that, which seems to suggest he is well past his prime.

With Upamecano and Nikola Milenkovic two long-term targets, it’s almost certain Rojo will be forced to make room, particularly following the rise to prominence of Axel Tuanzebe this season.

United should just rid themselves of Rojo once and for all, even if they have to take a substantial hit.

Ed Woodward should reconsider a January loan move for Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s latest snub.

What’s the word?

According to ESPN, the Red Devils have reportedly rejected loan enquiries for the Dutchman, 23, who has struggled for minutes under Solskjaer.

Van de Beek, despite arriving amid great pomp and ceremony, has made just two starts in ten Premier League games this season but United are reluctant to let the Dutch international leave on loan in January as they enter the crunch stage of the campaign.

However, Woodward should look to take advantage of the emerging transfer interest in the summer signing after Solskjaer snubbed the outcast midfielder in United’s 2-1 win away at Fulham on Wednesday night.

Chance to impress

The 23-year-old, who earns wages worth £108,000-per-week, has been largely restricted to substitute appearances under Solskjaer, having featured off the bench a whopping 12 times as he has found his chances few and far between this season so far.

It’s no wonder, then, that Van de Beek has been told by Ronald de Boer to find a new club, with the Dutch legend urging his fellow countryman to consider leaving Old Trafford before the delayed Euros in the summer.

He was completely left on the bench for the game against Premier League strugglers Fulham, which should act as a signal that Solskjaer has no immediate plans for the midfielder, who has racked up just 852 minutes of first-team football since his arrival last year.

Indeed, Woodward should view a potential move as an opportunity for Van de Beek to not only impress Solskjaer but also get some game time under his belt.

At 23, the midfielder is now faced with a career crossroads, with both Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba ahead of him in the pecking order.

The player who burst onto the scene at Ajax and was dubbed a “brilliant football player” by his teammate Scott McTominay is still there, but ahead of him stands a World Cup winner who is currently averaging more shots (1.1) and key passes (0.8) per match than Van de Beek.

Able to play in the centre, on the left or on the right of the midfield, the young Dutchman will have no shortage of suitors as his appeal is obvious. Standing at 6 ft tall, he is physically imposing, but is equally adept with the ball at his feet, and he could be one of the best value loan signings in the market this season.
