Speaking to the Talking Shutt Podcast this week, Managing Director of Leeds Angus Kinnear has given his thoughts on Kalvin Phillips, detailing what fee it might have taken to replace the midfielder if he left.

What’s he said?

Kalvin Phillips’ potential future away from Elland Road was well documented over the summer.

The Whites had £14m interest from Aston Villa for the 23-year-old while Wolves and Bournemouth were also in the running for his signature.

However, he didn’t actually move away and instead, put pen to paper on a brand new contract worth a reported £40k a week.

There was a strong chance he could leave but if he had done, what would it have taken to replace him? Appearing on episode 71 of the Talking Shutt Podcast, Kinnear had the answer. He said:

“If we get £20m for Kalvin, what does it take to replace him? We thought the answer was £30m. That’s the reality.”

Nigh on impossible to replace

The difficulty for Leeds this season would have been even finding someone to replace him, let alone convincing a £30m player to walk through the door and join a Championship side. That probably suggests why they turned down an offer of £27m including add-ons for his services.

Phillips has completed the most tackles per game in the Championship of anyone this season – a staggering rate of 4.6 each outing.

On top of that, the academy graduate only commits 1.3 fouls every match which is considerably less than the next best tackler in the division, Kevin Stewart. He’s made 4.1 tackles but a huge 3.1 fouls every match, per WhoScored.

That emphasises the fantastic job Phillips is doing and why it would have been so hard to go out and find a like-for-like substitute in the window.

The same podcast also discussed at length why they thought the holding player was essentially Premier League ready, thus giving weight to Kinnear’s comments.

The inflated state of the market dictates that players leave for higher sums of money so the reality of the situation is that Leeds would have found life difficult in finding someone to make up for his absence.

Fortunately for the west Yorkshire club, he’s stuck around and could do for the foreseeable future if they achieve promotion.

John Arne Riise was seemingly far from happy with the fact that three key Liverpool men were snubbed at the awards ceremony.

Firstly, the Norwegian had an issue with the fact that Lionel Messi beat Virgil van Dijk to the Best Player award, but the former left-back was also annoyed that Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson were nowhere to be seen in the Team of the Year.

Instead, Matthijs De Ligt, Sergio Ramos and Marcelo made the XI ahead of the two Liverpool full-backs, and it’s hard to disagree with Riise about this being a baffling decision.

وواصل: “أردنا أن نبقيهم غير مرتاحين، بالطبع هم مرتاحون مع الكرة ولكننا دافعنا جيدًا ولم نترك مساحة أمامهم، لعبنا المباراة التي أردنا أن نلعبها”.

واستكمل: “مانشستر سيتي لديه أفضل دكة في العالم، لقد كانت تجربة جيدة لنا، لا نشعر بالأسف، يكون الندم على مباراتنا ضد بيرنلي أو فولهام”.

واختتم: “لدينا 10 مباريات في الدوري و نريد أن نقاتل من أجل مركزنا في أوروبا الموسم المقبل”.

أكد ألفارو موراتا مهاجم يوفنتوس الإيطالي، أن زميله البرتغالي كريستيانو رونالدو، سيبقى في البيانكونيري ولن يرحل في الصيف المقبل.

وارتبط رونالدو بالرحيل عن يوفنتوس في الصيف، بعد النتائج السيئة للفريق هذا الموسم، واقتراب عقد البرتغالي من نهايته، في صيف 2022.

وقال موراتا في تصريحات لإذاعة “كادينا سير” الإسبانية: “التفاصيل الصغيرة أطاحت بنا أمام بورتو، لكن هذا خطأ الجميع، لكننا فزنا بكأس السوبر، ولدينا نهائي الكأس أمام أتالانتا”.

وأضاف: “يجب النظر لهذا العام بأنه مرحلة انتقالية، هذه أشياء يمكن تحسينها، وهذا كل شيء دون تضخيم الأمور”.

ودافع عن رونالدو: “لقد انتقدونا ولكن لا أحد في فريقنا لديه كل الألقاب التي حصل عليها رونالدو، دائمًا ما يقول لنا (أعلم أنني أول من يتعرض للنقد)، وأنا لست مضطرًا لأن أقول من هو كريستيانو، لأن الجميع يعرف من هو رونالدو”.

مهاجم يوفنتوس رد: “كنت سعيدًا في أتلتيكو، وكذلك في يوفنتوس، في نهاية الصيف سيخبرونني، لكنني سعيد هنا، مع بداية مشروع جديد للنادي”.

وأردف: “أتمنى تحقيق أتلتيكو الدوري الإسباني، وأعلم ماذا يعني لهم الفوز باللقب، أتحدث مع الجميع هناك، كوكي وساؤول وماركوس، عندما تلعب مع أتلتيكو تُدرك ما يعنيه هذا الاسم”.

واختتم بالحديث عن مقارنة هالاند ومبابي: “هم نوعان مختلفان، هالاند سيهيمن على مركز المهاجم في العالم، ومبابي سيفعل ذلك على جميع المستويات، لأنه يتمتع بالمراوغة والقوة والجودة، وعندما تحدثت معه من قبل أظهر لي أنه طفل جيد”.

Leeds were back to winning ways for only the second time in six matches in all competitions on Tuesday.They bounced back from what was a tough defeat against Charlton last weekend to reign victorious over previously unbeaten West Brom.After the game took place, The Athletics’ Phil Hay posted an article that detailed the progression of Mateusz Klich, one of the players to take to the field for the Whites in midweek.However, the Polish midfielder was criticised by a certain segment of Leeds supporters who offered damning verdicts on specific aspects of his play when replying to his tweet.One fan said that he looked leggy while his inability to shoot properly was also at the front of one individual’s mind.Klich netted ten times in the Championship last term but has only scored one this time around. He also missed a penalty against Derby.A further fan was looking for improvement in the final third, explaining his decision making was poor.

Klich has been mooted for a new contract recently but nothing has yet to formally come out of the club regarding his future.

There are a lot of concerns for Tottenham after their heavy defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday, but some fans noticed one worry which could lead to more defeats in future.

Despite that, the visit of Bayern Munich showed a flaw in his game currently, and many fans noticed that he grew tired far too quickly, resulting in him struggling to keep up with the pace of the game.

One fan put that down to the fact that his career to date has been spent in France, where the game is slower and less intense – so now he is facing the task of building up his stamina in order to get up to speed.

West Ham have got off to a good start to the season with only two defeats in eight league games, but the success of their summer signings has so far been mixed.

Sebastien Haller has gained plaudits for his all-round play and his return of four goals in seven league matches suggests he is adjusting well to to England, unlike Pablo Fornals.

The Spaniard arrived from Villarreal in the summer with a degree of expectation due to being described by Manuel Pellegrini as a “talented player”, his transfer fee of £24m, and some impressive performances in the U21 European Championship – but he is yet to find his feet at the Hammers.

The 23-year-old managed five goals and six assists in the last campaign but he is yet to show quality in the final third this time around. He only has one shot per game to show for his efforts, and is still without a goal or assist.

Equally worrying are the signs that he is yet to get up to the speed of the Premier League.

He has achieved a rate of just 0.4 key passes and 0.5 successful dribbles per game, which is nowhere near good enough if he is to displace one of Manuel Lanzini, Felipe Anderson or the in-form Andriy Yarmolenko, who has three goals in seven league games.

Further evidence of that fact is his average of 18 passes per game. His lack of contribution will do little to persuade Pellegrini that he is deserving of a starting place and if the struggle to adapt continues then he could run out of time to impress.

By comparison, Anderson and Lanzini boast average pass stats of 51 and 45 respectively, and even with them in the side West Ham have only managed 11 goals in eight matches.

Despite that, Fornals needs a regular run in the side – even if it is of short-term detriment to the team.

Lanzini is not at the top of his game currently, offering only one assist in seven matches, and giving Fornals the responsibility to create and score goals from his favoured position could do him a great deal of good.

It will allow him game time to adjust to the league’s intensity, create an understanding with his teammates and settle at a new club where being in and out of the side could be damaging his morale.

If he is able to build in all of the above aspects then his quality should show and he may begin reproducing the consistent displays he showed in Spain, and the Hammers could certainly benefit from the 1.3 key passes he achieved last year.
