So then, another season of the Premier League is done and dusted and it’s time for the 20 teams to start reviewing their campaigns and putting plans in place for the 2019/2020 term.

Little has changed at the top of the league with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City marching to back-to-back Premier League titles, also picking up the Carabao Cup along the way.

However, it hasn’t all been plain-sailing for the Citizens as they were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League at the quarter-final stage by a Premier League rival once again.

Having said this, it could yet get better for the Etihad Stadium club ahead of the Emirates FA Cup final which will be contested with Watford at Wembley Stadium.

In light of all this, today we review the season of the English champions, from their best result, to whether it was truly a success and who they should sign to improve before next season. Join us…

Best result – Brighton (A) – 4-1

Man City’s best result of the 2018/2019 season undoubtedly came on the final day of the Premier League campaign at the American Express Community Stadium against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Guardiola’s men ventured to the south coast under immense pressure a point ahead of second-place Liverpool, knowing that a victory would seal the trophy for a second successive year. However, if they slipped up, that the Reds would be ready to take the crown.

Disaster threatened to strike when Glenn Murray headed the Seagulls ahead in the 27th minute, but City remained cool and Sergio Aguero replied under 60 seconds later, Aymeric Laporte, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan magnificently following him in to ensure there would be no final twist in the tale.

Best signing – Riyad Mahrez

The Sky Blues only made a handful of signings during the 2018/2019 term, the bulk of them being youngsters who haven’t really threatened the starting Xl.

However, a summer 2018 arrival who wasn’t a starlet and has impressed at senior level in many different matches at various points is attacker Riyad Mahrez.

The Algerian club-record signing from Leicester City recovered from a rocky start which included missing a potentially match-winning penalty at Anfield to register 12 goals and 12 assists and even pop up with a crucial strike on the final day of the season – the stunning third goal against Brighton.

Worst result – Leicester City (A) – 2-1

The Citizens’ worst result of the campaign came during the tricky Festive period, a 2-1 Boxing Day loss to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

It wasn’t the most severe defeat of 18/19 in terms of scoreline, though it did make for the club’s worst run of results, three losses in the space of four league games and so very nearly cost Guardiola’s boys their title hopes.

Desperately needing a bounce-back three points following a shock home defeat to Crystal Palace, the team fell to Marc Albrighton and Ricardo Pereira strikes – only able to reply with a Sergio Aguero consolation. At that point, they were a full seven points adrift of the top of the table.

Is the manager safe? – Yes

It can be said with a lot of confidence that Pep Guardiola’s job is safe for the foreseeable future after another stellar season.

Having replaced Manuel Pellegrini at the Etihad Stadium ahead of the 2016/2017 campaign, the world-renowned Spaniard has collected a whopping five trophies, including consecutive Premier League and League Cup glories secured this term.

Guardiola is contracted in Manchester until summer 2021 and one would feel that he’d have to do a hell of a lot wrong to get sacked at any stage before then. Although he is yet to show any real signs of UEFA Champions League progression for the Sky Blues.

Who should be sold? 

There isn’t a lot wrong with the current Citizens squad and it would be harsh to suggest that any of the key members should be sold when the summer transfer window gets underway.

But there are a few forgotten men at the Etihad who should go at the campaign’s conclusion. These are fringe central midfielder Fabian Delph, lesser-spotted French centre-back Eliaquim Mangala and current injured third-choice goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

Delph may have had the quality to deserve a place in the City squad when he signed, but now that just isn’t the case and he needs to make way. The same can very much be said of Mangala who’s rarely made a matchday squad since the start of last August despite recently signing an extension. And the 36-year-old Bravo has spent the term out injured, Guardiola needs a more reliable and fresh enough back-up to Ederson and bright youngster Arijanet Muric.

Goal of the Season 

Many contenders for goal of the season popped up during the campaign for the Sky Blues, including David Silva’s wonderful free-kick at home to Huddersfield Town, Kyle Walker’s low bullet against Newcastle United and Oleksandr Zinchenko’s curling worldie in the 9-0 Burton Albion cup thrashing.

But none of them came near Vincent Kompany’s incredible long-range effort in the key Etihad Stadium beating of Leicester City in Premier League matchday 37.

With City running out of time to find a winner to stay at the top of the table with three points, the central defensive club legend picked up the ball 25 yards out and drilled a rocket into the near right-hand top corner. In the process, leaving Kasper Schmeichel with no chance whatsoever and winning the encounter.

Interesting stat – 14 in a row

One interesting stat from the Manchester powerhouses’ season revolves around their final 14 Premier League matches, from early February to mid-May.

Following the surprise loss away at Newcastle United, City were left with a conundrum whereby picking up three points from each of their final 14 league games would ensure back-to-back titles, regardless of what Liverpool did.

And Guardiola’s men duly took advantage by taking care of Arsenal, Everton, Chelsea, West Ham United, AFC Bournemouth, Watford, Fulham, Cardiff City, Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Burnley, Leicester City and Brighton & Hove Albion to become the first side to end an English top-flight campaign with 14 successive triumphs.

Success or failure? – Success

In spite of the aforementioned disappointing UEFA Champions League last-eight exit at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur, the Sky Blues’ season can only be ranked as a success yet again.

Guardiola delivered two trophies, defeating Chelsea to lift the League Cup and seeing off the fierce challenge of Liverpool to be crowned champions of England once more. And there’s potential for a third if they can get the better of a Hornets side that finished 10 places and 48 points below them in the Premier League table at Wembley.

City sit on the edge of a highly commendable domestic treble and the last two campaigns have been nothing but successes in the east side of Manchester. Who would bet against the club reflecting on a third consecutive successful term this time next year?

Turning point – Beating Liverpool

As fantastic as City’s season was, there was a period where things weren’t going so great and where a turning point arrived.

Following that forgettable 2-1 loss at Leicester, the Cityzens went to Southampton and picked up a much-needed three points before welcoming Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to the Etihad Stadium in an encounter that was always going to go a long way to deciding the title race.

Guardiola’s side picked themselves up to stride to a pivotal 2-1 win thanks to Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane strikes rendering Roberto Firmino’s goal pointless and clawed back a heavy chunk of the seven-point deficit. From here on out, City would only fail to win once in the league in contrast to the Reds’ four draws.

بالاجي أوضح في كتابه، حسبما نشرت صحيفة “ميرور” البريطانية، أنّ مورينيو قام بتوبيخ رونالدو على خط التماس، بسبب بعض التعليمات الدفاعية، خلال مباراة ريال مدريد وفالنسيا، قبل أنّ يتطور الأمر إلى شجار “ساخن” داخل غرفة خلع الملابس.

البداية كانت من رونالدو، الذي لم تعجبه كلمات مورينيو، وهاجمه قائلًا: “بعد كل ما فعلته من أجلك، هكذا تعامني؟، كيف تجرؤ على قول ذلك لي!”.

ثم قال مورينيو للهداف التاريخي للنادي الملكي: “كنت أقول ذلك من أجل الفريق، لأن الفريق احتاجك للعودة”.

وأوضح بالاجي أنّ الأمر لم يتوقف عند هذا الحد، بل رونالدو رد على مورينيو مرة أخرى، ثم رد سبيشال وان على كريستيانو، وتدخل اللاعبون في الفريق من أجل إبعاد الثنائي حيث كان سيتطور الأمر إلى اشتباكٍ بالأيدي.

وأكد بالاجي في كتابه أنّ رونالدو لم يأخذ تعليمات مورينيو، على أنها تكتيكية، ورأى أنّ الأمر هجوم شخصي، مُشيرًا إلى أنّ العلاقة بين مورينيو ورونالدو لم تعد كما كانت أبدًأ.

When Alisson signed for Liverpool last summer, not a lot of football fans have since stopped to think about the impact it’s had on Simon Mignolet.

The Reds number one for the good part of four seasons has been completely forgotten about since the £66 million deal to bring the Brazilian keeper to Liverpool, making just two appearances in this campaign and being a permanent fixture on the bench.

Mignolet was never the most popular figure on Merseyside, but it is still surprising to see how quickly Jurgen Klopp has been to move on from the Belgian international for Alisson in every competition, and the 31-year-old keeper is ready for a move away from Liverpool this summer.

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool have put a £15 million valuation on Mignolet heading into the summer transfer window as the club aim to make a profit on the goalkeeper despite barely playing this season. Indeed, it’s another potential for sporting director Michael Edwards, who is simply on fire in the transfer market.

Liverpool have made a name for themselves in recent seasons of being able to squeeze as much money as possible out of their departing players, with Dominic Solanke the prime example having never scored for the Reds yet managing to be sold to Bournemouth for a reported fee of £19 million.

With Mignolet joining the club in 2013 for a reported fee of £9 million from Sunderland, Liverpool will be eager to make some profit on their second choice keeper this summer, and given his performances in the past landing him a place in club infamy, fans will be more than happy to see the Belgian walk through the exit door sooner rather than later.

According to the Evening Standard, Everton are in pole position to sign Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck on a free transfer this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the England international is out of contract at the Emirates Stadium and the Gunners will not be renewing his deal; he was given a send off in the club’s last home game in the 1-1 draw with Brighton.

Welbeck hasn’t featured since November 8th after breaking his ankle in a Europa League tie against Sporting Lisbon, which was a shame given the form he was in before that incident – the former Manchester United striker had hit five goals before his injury.

A number of other clubs are interested in signing the 28-year-old, such as Crystal Palace, West Ham, Newcastle and Wolves, but it is the Toffees who reportedly lead the race for his signature.

Everton should steer clear of Walcott 2.0

Everton’s Director of Football Marcel Brands said as recently as last month that: “The players we brought in last year were all under 25 so we don’t want to invest big money in players who are older.

“Everton is a club that also has to sell players so it is necessary to get younger players to invest in. That’s why we invested in young players last summer. [Lucas] Digne was 24, [Yerry] Mina 23, Richarlison 21; so we look to players in the age group 20-25/26.”

Those quotes came as part of an article from the Guardian, in which it was revealed that the £110,000-a-week flop Theo Walcott’s future at Goodison Park could be in doubt – the 30-year-old, formerly of Arsenal, was a woeful signing.

So, if that is the case, why are Everton reportedly willing to offer the 28-year-old Welbeck a contract worth more than the £100,000-a-week he is currently earning with Arsenal?

Brands has covered himself in glory with the shrewd captures of young talent such as Richarlison and Lucas Digne, both of whom are excellent performers, will only get better and will also only increase in value.

Welbeck, on the other hand, would represent the complete opposite of that transfer strategy.

He is closer to 30 than he is 25, and his availability comes with a lot of risk attached given his injury problems over the years prior to his ankle break.

This would be a foolish move for the Toffees and one that goes against what they are trying to achieve.

Welbeck is another Walcottesque disaster waiting to happen.

معضلة الاختيار

فيليبس، 23 عاما، لم يكن مع ليفربول في الموسم الماضي، إذ قضاه مُعارًا مع شتوتجارت الألماني؛ وبعد العودة هذا الموسم خاض اولى مُبارياته مع الريدز قبل ثلاثة أسابيع، وكان رائعًا في فوز ليفربول 2-1 على وست هام يونايتد.

ناثانييل قام بتسع تدخلات ناجحة في أول ظهور له في الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز، وأبقى مهاجم هامرز سيباستيان هالر تحت السيطرة.

الحاجة للسرعة

على الرغم من أنّ فاردي لديه سرعة تختلف تمامًا عن هالر، ولكن فيليبس أيضًا لديه تحول ممتاز في السرعة. 

أمام وست هام، سجّل ناثانييل ثالث أعلى سرعة قصوى للاعب في ليفربول هذا الموسم، مما يجعله أسرع قلب دفاع للنادي، هذا العامل يمكن أنّ يكسبه فرصة للعب ضد ليستر.

بينما فابينيو كان ممتازًا كقلب دفاع ضد تشيلسي في سبتمبر الماضي، بسبب خبرته كلاعب إرتكاز نادرًا ما يكون مرتبكًا، وفي المباراة التي فاز فيها ليفربول 2-0 على ملعب ستامفورد بريدج، قدم البرازيلي 90 تمريرة بدقة 96.7 في المائة، وبالتأكيد عندما يضغط هجوم ليستر على دفاعات ليفربول، يُمكن الوثوق بفابينيو بعدم فقدان الكرة في منطقة سيئة.

ستكون هناك إيجابيات وسلبيات لاختيار فيليبس أو فابينيو في مركز قلب الدفاع، لذا فإن قرار كلوب النهائي سيعتمد على الخطة التكتيكية التي يفضلها لهذه المباراة.

Goodness. Gracious. Me. We’ve come across some truly questionable things in our time but this one just about takes the biscuit as the most bizarre, inconceivable, unsubstantiated load of tosh (insert any expletive you see fit) we've ever had the misfortune of laying our eyes upon.

Once touted as the next big thing to burst onto the scene, the Montenegro international failed miserably to reach the heights that were expected of him. There were pockets of truly special moments, we admit, but these episodes were generally marred by extended periods on the sideline which would subsequently thrust him into temporary spells of absolute anonymity amongst fans.

Finally, after two painful years of hot and cold performances in Manchester, Jovetic made his return to Italy, Inter Milan the suitors.

Despite his outlandish statement, in which he also claimed Manuel Pellegrini didn’t use him properly (always someone else’s fault), Jovetic would continue to flop in his new surroundings, managing just seven goals in 33 games. According to him though, this will have been because he was playing in a more challenging competition.

Not sure we’re buying it.

Nor were I Nerazzurri who disposed of him two years later first to Sevilla on a temporary deal, before Monaco eventually secured his services in the summer of 2017.

Admittedly the forward's record is looking a little sharper in France and Ligue 1, having netted 12 times in 31 all competitions.

However, we'd have to argue that, with Monaco struggling to replicate their previous success – which has seen them spend long periods of time flirting with relegation, in what is one of the least regarded competitions in European football – his efforts, though improved, are somewhat insignificant. A bit like him really.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are set to schedule contract talks with Joel Matip to avoid him becoming a transfer target for some of Europe’s top clubs this summer.

What’s the word, then?

The Cameroon international has emerged as a key member in Jurgen Klopp’s squad this season, primarily in the second half of the campaign after an injury to Joe Gomez.

Since the England international broke his leg, Matip has stepped in superbly alongside Virgil van Dijk in the heart of defence to keep Liverpool’s bid for a sixth European Cup on track; through no fault of his own, Matip couldn’t end the Reds’ long wait for a Premier League title.

He is now set to start his first Champions League final on Saturday, and according to the aforementioned report, Liverpool are keen to tie him down amid ‘concerning’ interest from top clubs.

Luis Suarez certainly had no qualms about celebrating against his former employers in the video below…

The former Schalke man’s contract ends next summer, but Liverpool are keen to reward him with an extension.

Completely the right move

We’ve seen just how effective trusting your current players rather than replacing them constantly can be through Tottenham’s decision not to make a signing in the last two transfer windows.

Klopp’s Champions League final opponent has instead worked closely with what they already have and placed an enormous amount of faith in them, and it has paid dividends with a top-four finish and a place in a European Cup final.

There has been plenty of talk about Matthijs de Ligt potentially arriving at Anfield, and it sure would be tempting for Klopp to splash out on the wonderkid and allow him to take Matip’s place in the team.

However, that would be so, so harsh.

Fresher reports have revealed that Liverpool have no intention of signing the Dutchman, and Liverpool’s decision to schedule talks with Matip suggest he will be a key member of the side for next season.

Klopp and Liverpool are doing entirely the right thing in rewarding those who are playing well, instead of going out into the market looking to replace them.

وأضاف: “أبارك لمحمود الخطيب رئيس الأهلي الذي تحمل كل شىء لكي يحقق حلم الجماهير، لم يخطىء في أحد، ظل لمدة 3 سنوات يتحمل هو ومجلس إدارته لكي يحققوا حلم الجماهير والجمعية العمومية بأدب واخلاق واحترام المنافس في كل شىء”.

وواصل: “رئيس مصر قوي والقانون يطبق على الكل، ربنا أعزنا ونصر الأهلي وجماهيره بعد أن ظُلمنا كثيرًا، ونحن نتمسك بالمبادىء والأخلاق ومع ذلك الناس كانوا يسخرون منها، ويوجد شىء اسمه التنافس الشريف والمحترم وسنكمل بهذا الشكل”.

وتابع: “الأهلي دوره كمؤسسة أن يبني بلد وجيل وشباب وناس لديها أخلاق، ليس الأهلي بمفرده الذي لديه مبادىء هناك الكثير ولكن صوتهم غير واضح”.

وأردف: “الذي لديه مبادىء وأخلاق يكون صوته عاليًا، وعديم الأخلاق يجب ألا يكون صاحب الصوت العالي ولا يصح أن نقف خلفه”.

واستأنف: “نحترم الزمالك لأنه منافس قوي جدًا وأدى مباراة قوية جدًا، والأهلي كان يستحق الفوز، وأبارك لسيد عبد الحفيظ مدير الكرة بالقلعة الحمراء لأنه تحمل الكثير جدًا، والشوارع كلها أصبحت حمراء لم نرى ذلك منذ فترة طويلة”.

وأضاف: “الخطيب لا يفعل شيئًا في حياته غير خدمة الأهلي ويريد أن يحقق طموح جماهيره، ونحن نبذل أقصى جهد لأننا نحب النادي”.

وتابع: “فريقنا قوي ودور من يجلسون في المدرجات هو التشجيع، نحن نحترم المنافس والبطولات المقبلة بعد 2020 ستكون هي الرياضة التي نريدها أن تكون في مصر بها تنافس ولكن في النهاية أصدقاء لأن الناس بلغوا مرحلة كبيرة من الشحن تفوق العادة”.
