Tottenham Hotspur: Fans reflect on ‘awful’ Federico Fazio

Lots of Tottenham Hotspur fans have reflected on ‘awful’ Federico Fazio after the north London club’s official Twitter page posted a throwback line-up including their former player.

Fazio started against Chelsea in a 5-3 Premier League win at White Hart Lane back on New Year’s Day in 2015, with Harry Kane netting a brace and Danny Rose, Andros Townsend and Nacer Chadli scoring the goals, as per the BBC. The result meant that Spurs leapfrogged their arch-rivals Arsenal into fifth place in the table.

Fazio has made Transfermarkt. He played the majority of these games in the Premier League in the 2014/15 season, where he featured 20 times.

Comparing his stats in that league campaign to the other central defenders at the club, the criticism of the Argentine may perhaps be a little unfair. Fazio averaged more interceptions, clearances and blocks than Jan Vertonghen, Vlad Chiriches and Younes Kaboul, according to Whoscored.

Nevertheless, these Tottenham supporters reflected negatively on their former man, with one fan branding the 33-year old as ‘awful’:

Alasdair Gold gives update on Jan Vertonghen’s Spurs future

In a Q&A on Football.London, Alasdair Gold has provided a major update on the contract situation surrounding Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen.

What did he say?

The Belgium international’s current deal with the Lilywhites comes to an end in the summer, but with the season currently postponed, there is a real chance that his contract could end before the campaign reaches its conclusion.

And now, Gold has suggested that there are some serious issues for FIFA to resolve, and claimed that Spurs may be inclined to keep a hold of Vertonghen so as to avoid having to spend money on buying a replacement.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

He said: “The Premier League clubs want to finish the season before they even contemplate what happens next season. If that means going past June 30 then it’s going to have to. FIFA have been attempting to set up ways for it to work but in practice you surely can’t force someone to extend their contract if they don’t want to and likewise you’re forcing some clubs with financial difficulties to extend contracts, however short, for players they may not wish to.

“There is also another element to it in that some clubs with financial problems may find it’s cheaper to extend deals of current players they may not have originally done so for than have to pay transfer fees for replacements. That could be the case with Vertonghen who is believed to have always wanted to stay at Spurs but the closer he gets to becoming a free agent so the more attractive the offers he gets will be from across Europe and further afield.”

Headache

Make no mistake about it, the issues of player contracts looks like it’s going to be a major headache for clubs across the world this summer.

In Spurs’ case, it may well be in their best interests to tie down Vertonghen for a short-term deal just to absolutely ensure that Jose Mourinho can call upon the Belgian for the final few games of the season – whenever that ends up getting played.

The north Londoners are unlikely going to be big players in the transfer market what with money set to be tight, so at least having a Premier League-proven central defender in their ranks for the remainder of the campaign can ease some concerns.

Meanwhile, Alasdair Gold has waxed lyrical about this Spurs starlet.

Man Utd fans loving Andreas Pereira exit talk

Manchester United midfielder Andreas Pereira has at least one admirer, and it doesn’t appear to be the supporters at the club.

The president of Brazilian league giants Santos, Jose Carlos Peres, has been talking up the prospects of signing the 24-year-old one day in the future.

Speaking with Gazeta Esportiva, he said: “I have Andreas Pereira on Whatsapp and I have been talking to him, he wins a lot at Manchester United. He will certainly wear the club shirt one day.”

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

And fans have been absolutely loving the idea of seeing Pereira depart Old Trafford as soon as possible, even though it’s unlikely that the Serie A side can even afford him.

Despite being born in Belgium, the 5 foot 10 attacking midfielder has opted for his father’s nationality, Brazil, where he has already picked up one senior cap.

This season, he has recorded two goals and four assists from 37 appearances, seeing his value rise to £14.4m via Transfermarkt.

The Sun reported in March that Ole Gunner Solskjaer would be willing to listen to offers for the Red Devils academy graduate at the end of the season, but it remains to be seen whether the current climate has changed things since.

Here’s how fans have been reacting to the news…

AND in other news, so many Man Utd fans react over sporting director update…

Diop signing could lead to Vestergaard exit

Southampton have been linked with a move for West Ham’s Issa Diop recently and if he were to join Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side this summer, it could lead to Jannik Vestergaard’s exit.

What’s the word?

According to French news outlet Foot Mercato, Southampton, Wolves and Crystal Palace are all showing an interest in the 24-year-old ahead of next season.

It is suggested that a loan-to-buy deal has been suggested by some of the clubs without any success thus far and with West Ham arguably short on defensive options as it is, it would be something of a surprise if David Moyes allowed Diop to leave this summer ahead of the Hammers’ upcoming Europa League campaign.

Bye-bye Vestergaard?

If Southampton were to splash the cash on the former Toulouse man this summer, it would not be a surprise to see the Denmark international depart, as he has been heavily linked with a move away throughout the summer.

The 28-year-old’s contract at St Mary’s is set to expire at the end of next season and it makes a lot of sense for Southampton to sell him now rather than losing him for nothing in 2022, especially if they are able to bring in a direct replacement such as Diop.

The West Ham defender made just 18 appearances in the Premier League last season, averaging a less than impressive 6.64 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

However, he has been highly rated in the past, particularly by Jose Mourinho during his time at Manchester United, as he sang his praises following a defeat against the Hammers in 2018, saying:

“(He had a) fantastic match. Congratulations to the scout that found a 21-year-old kid Diop – a monster who dominated in the duels.”

If he were able to replicate those sorts of performances at St Mary’s, then he would surely prove to be an adequate replacement for the six-foot-six Vestergaard next season, with the Dane impressing both aerially and with the ball at his feet last term.

After an impressive Euros, it would not be a surprise to see the former Borussia Monchengladbach man depart Southampton, especially if Martin Semmens opts to sign Diop for Hasenhuttl this summer.

And, in other news… Hasenhuttl drops claim on “outstanding” beast that’ll delight Saints fans

Liverpool fans deliver verdict on Emre Can after Juventus defeat

[ad_pod ]

Former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can came off of the bench to make just his fourth Champions League appearance of the season for Juventus in their 2-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, and Reds fans were quick to react on Twitter.

The Germany international left the Merseyside outfit, whom he played 167 times for, to sign for the Serie A giants last summer following the expiry of his contract at Anfield, and his outing in Spain was his 24th in all competitions for Juve so far this term.

When the 25-year-old entered the field as a 72nd minute substitute in the first leg of the last 16 Champions League tie in the Spanish capital the scoreline was 0-0, but late goals from Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin ensured the hosts hold a strong advantage ahead of the return fixture in Turin next month.

Liverpool supporters took to social media to have their say on the latest setback for their ex-star who is finding consistent starts hard to come by, and while one said he “should have stayed”, another said the “grass isn’t always greener”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Crystal Palace need to keep tabs on Nikola Vlasic ahead of the summer transfer window

Crystal Palace eased in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup with a comfortable 2-0 victory against Doncaster Rovers.

The Eagles took an early lead after just eight minutes when Jeffrey Schlupp and their lead was doubled just before the interval. Max Meyer headed home their second to ensure progress to the last eight of the competition. The victory means that Palace have reached the quarter-final stage for the first time in 23 years.

Palace have never won the famous trophy and reaching Wembley would provide a massive boost to Roy Hodgson’s men. Ensuring their Premier League status will also be a priority as it would directly affect their summer transfer plans. The former England boss will aim to lessen the goalscoring burden on the shoulders of Wilfried Zaha when the window opens.

One man Hodgson should target is Everton youngster – Nikola Vlasic. Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, the Croatia international signed for the Toffees after impressing Ronald Koeman in the Europa League. Everton paid £9m to lure him to Merseyside but opportunities in the first-team were extremely limited.

Vlasic was loaned to CSKA Moscow in the summer with Marco Silva failing to find a place for him in his first-team plans. The 21-year-old has taken his opportunity with both hands and has impressed greatly in the Russian Premier League. Vlasic has scored seven goals and registered five assists in all competitions, proving to be a constant menace for defenders on the right wing.

Should Everton fail to offer him first-team football, the youngster could opt to depart. Palace would be the perfect home if Hodgson could convince him to move to Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace fans, thoughts?

Opinion: Che Adams ticks all the boxes for Tottenham Hotspur

[ad_pod ]

Everybody loves an underdog. In football, David vs Goliath encounters are typically thrown up on a weekly basis between two sides at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Individually speaking, though, it takes a relentless work-ethic and a touch of unseen natural talent to help underdogs rise to the top level.

For players plying their trade in non-league football, the prospect of playing in the Premier League sits in the realm of fantasy, but there are exceptions who climb to the peak of the ladder.

The centre-forward position is the most niche and difficult to master of all the outfield positions. Get it right, though, and it’s certainly easy to get noticed.

Just look at Jamie Vardy, for example. His well-documented journey from Fleetwood Town goal-machine to Premier League title-winner in 2016 is the ultimate started-from-the-bottom-now-we’re-‘ere story in recent footballing memory.

Callum Wilson may not be donning a Premier League winners’ medal on his mantelpiece just yet but his ability to resurrect his career in non-league football with Tamworth is a comparable story worth noting.

And, while he may not have needed to spend much of his senior career in the depths below League Two, Birmingham City’s Che Adams could yet be the next electric forward to follow in the footsteps of both Wilson and Vardy by making the transition to top-flight football.

The Birmingham City hitman has been in clinical goal scoring form this season, bagging 21 goals from 33 Championship appearances, a return which averages out at a goal for every 125 minutes of football played.

Former Birmingham defender Michael Johnson has already suggested that the 22-year-old is a perfect fit for Mauricio Pochettino’s style of football. As quoted by football.london, he said…

“I could see Adams at Tottenham, with the way they play. He loves the ball in and around the box and I think he has what it takes to play at the very top.”

Tottenham fans should be familiar with Adams from their League Cup semi-final clash against Sheffield United back in 2015. Then 18, Adams came off the bench and scored a brace within six minutes of being introduced into the action, but the teenager’s endeavours were undone by a late Christian Eriksen goal which sent them crashing out of the competition.

Just two months after leaving non-league Ilkeston, Adams’ brimming quality was there for all to see. Pace, power and a clinical eye for the back of the net left Spurs stunned.

It was the type of stunning cameo which will have resonated with everybody involved with Spurs, and four years later they would be wise to consider him as a potential transfer target.

First and foremost, Adams fits the profile of the type of player Pochettino has actively looked to integrate into his squad in recent years: English and bursting with potential. Add in both the powerful forward’s prolific return and the glaring need for a long-term understudy for Harry Kane at Spurs and it’s difficult to argue against his compelling case.

And, for the notoriously tight-fisted Daniel Levy, Adams should be available at a price which will offer the prospect of future profitability.

The Times reported earlier this month that Birmingham have slapped a £22 million asking-price on his head which, in the context of the modern economic climate, is peanuts – even chief pantomime villain and apparently penniless Mike Ashley splashed just shy of that figure on Miguel Almiron.

Tottenham have a multitude of reasons to host the next rags to riches story by signing Adams in the summer window.
