Hodgson’s comments sum up Palace’s season so far

According to Sky Sports, Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson believes his side were not rewarded for their efforts against Premier League high-flyers Chelsea on Sunday.

The Eagles fell 3-1 to Maurizio Sarri’s men, but the former England boss believed his team had some chances of their own. This, unfortunately for Palace fans, has been the story of the club’s season so far.

Palace haven’t made the greatest start to their Premier League season, and are currently sitting in 14th place with only two wins. However, they have been unlucky in a number of their losses.

Only recently did Hodgson’s men slip up in the final minutes against Everton at Goodison Park after a superb defensive effort. The club deserved a draw but came away empty handed. Likewise, they can feel equally aggrieved with their 1-0 loss to Wolves at home earlier this season, whereby they dominated every stat except for the scoreboard.

This goes to show that this Palace team are perhaps better than their position in the table is suggesting, and that fans should not be particularly nervous about being dragged into a relegation battle. However, what may be a concern is the club’s inability to take their chances and salvage points.

The club’s travails may be down to their strikers being severely out of form. Hodgson fielded Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend up front against The Blues, neither of which are strikers. With Christian Benteke out of touch, and injured, as well as Jordan Ayew and Alexander Sørloth also struggling, the Palace boss may have no other options than to start his wingers as strikers.

Therefore, whilst Palace can feel upset with how some fixtures have gone this season, they can point their fingers at their struggling strikers.

Revealed: 68% of Celtic fans call on Brendan Rodgers to strengthen defence in January

[ad_pod ]

With the January transfer window fast approaching, managers will already be assessing their current squads and laying plans to put into action during the market.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers will already be considering what work needs to be done in January. Although the Bhoys have been in impressive form of late – notably beating RB Leipzig 2-1 in the Europa League last time out – their poor start to the campaign will have concerned the former Liverpool boss.

Having failed to reach the Champions League group stages for the first time in his tenure, Rodgers will know that his playing staff are due some upgrades.

We asked Celtic fans which area of the squad they thought to be in most desperate need of reinforcements and 68% stated that the defensive contingent ought to be addressed as a priority.

Despite the summer arrivals of Filip Benkovic and Emilio Izaguirre, Hoops fans clearly believe that the back line still needs work. See the full results below.

Unhappy Hernández could signify potential arrival of Gabigol

According to The Express, West Ham striker Javier Hernández has been linked with a move away from the London Stadium.

Apparently, the striker, who signed for The Hammers in 2017, is unhappy with his current role under Manuel Pellegrini, and wants to move to Europe for more playing time, with Besiktas showing an interest in the Mexican. This is dependent on whether his manager approves of this move or not.

The former Man United striker has primarily been used from the bench this season, as he has struggled behind in-form Marko Arnautović. The Austrian has largely been the sole striker under the Chilean and Hernández has done little to usurp him.

While it is clear that the 30-year-old wants to start as much as possible, the rumoured arrival of 22-year-old Brazilian Gabigol may have been the final nail in the coffin for Hernández. The youngster is in fantastic form for Santos this season, scoring 16 gaols in 31 games, and is a prime target for The Irons. Pellegrini may have already outlined his plans for the club with Gabigol, and Hernández may not play a significant role.

However, that does not mean that the striker would not be a great addition to many clubs in Europe, but it is just clear that he does not necessarily fit it with Pellegrini. Arnautović and Gabigol may well be the combination for many years to come at the London Stadium, and there may be very little the Mexican can do about that.

If Hernández wants to stay at West Ham, he has two months to convince his manager why he should start. While he may be one of the most effective substitutes in the Premier League, that clearly does not suffice.

Leeds fans react to Jansson injury

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Leeds fans have been reacting to yet another injury concern, as Pontus Jansson is not expected to feature against Bristol City on Saturday.

If Leeds fans thought they were unlucky with injuries last season, then this campaign has taken it to a whole new level.

Patrick Bamford, Luke Ayling and Gaetano Berardi are all out until the New Year, and Jamal Blackman joined the long-term injury list over the international break.

Bailey Peacock Farrell is not expected to play this weekend due to a knee injury, and Jansson looks almost certain to be ruled out as well.

The towering Swede has become a fan favourite at Elland Road, but he has yet to return to full training.

“Until yesterday we thought he would be available but now the game is getting closer I don’t have the same optimism. He didn’t train with the group,” Marcelo Bielsa said on Thursday.

The boss went on to say he may use Kalvin Phillips in defence, something he has already done this season, or even hand a first team debut to Aapo Halme.

Either way, the Whites will certainly have their work cut out for them on Saturday, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Tottenham fans worry over Eriksen contract comments

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Tottenham fans have been reacting to some comments from Mauricio Pochettino, as the boss had his say on Christian Eriksen’s contract situation.

Tottenham fans have been growing increasingly worried over the lack of news on a new deal for Eriksen, and the boss’ recent comments aren’t exactly convincing.

The Danish international, who has scored 57 times and added 73 assists during his time in North London, will be out of contract in the summer of 2020.

This means that the club will be in a very dangerous position next season, as Europe’s big boys will definitely come calling as his deal ticks down.

“We are working so hard. The club is trying to take the best decision,” Pochettino said when asked about the situation on Thursday.

Needless to say, fans aren’t exactly convinced by the “we are trying” line, especially when title rivals Liverpool have now locked their entire front three down with long-term deals.

Birmingham fans on Twitter slate Craig Gardner after Aston Villa loss

[ad_pod ]

Birmingham fans on Twitter were not happy after their side lost the Second City derby 4-2 to Aston Villa on Sunday, and midfielder Craig Gardner in particular took plenty of stick for his performance.

The Blues actually took the lead at Villa Park just before the half-hour mark through in-form striker Lukas Jutkiewicz. However, two quickfire goals from Johnathan Kodija and Jack Grealish ensured that the home side went into the break in the lead.

Tammy Abraham added another from the penalty spot just six minutes into the second period before Birmingham left-back Kristian Pedersen pulled one back with his first goal for the club since his summer move from FC Union Berlin.

However, it was Villa’s fourth goal that killed the game and drew most of the criticism for Gardner. Scotsman Alan Hutton picked up the ball in his own half and ran past Gardner and all the way into the Birmingham box before firing past Lee Camp.

Gardner began his career at Villa, playing 80 times for Birmingham’s rivals before joining the Blues for the first time in 2011. Now in his second spell at St Andrew’s, it’s clear that fans were not happy with the 32-year-old’s poor attempt to stop Hutton.

Rangers should sign League One marksman Tom Eaves to provide competition to Alfredo Morelos

[ad_pod ]

Rangers should really be in the market for another striker to compete with 15-goal Alfredo Morelos, as only Kyle Lafferty and, to an extent, Umar Sadiq, are providing the Colombian with any sort of competition.

What’s the word, then?

Well, it is no secret that Steven Gerrard is in the market for another forward as he expects his side to battle on three fronts this season – in the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and the Europa League.

It goes without saying that 22-year-old Morelos is the star man and is doing an amazing job up top for the Gers, with nine goals in his last 10 league games. However, the aforementioned Sadiq is yet to score this term, whilst Lafferty has just four goals – attacking depth is needed if Gerrard is to make his first season in management a special one.

Additionally, even Morelos cannot be relied on completely at the moment. The youngster’s provocative style of play, in which he draws a lot of fouls and winds up a lot of opponents, may see him either injured or sent off in the near future, which would require another striker that Gerrard can depend on.

Who should they get in?

A player who is currently in fantastic form is Gillingham star Tom Eaves. The Englishman has 13 goals and three assists already this season in just 19 starts for the League One side, and is the joint-top scorer in England’s third tier alongside Ian Henderson.

Playmaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals he would have snubbed Tottenham for Arsenal if they’d come knocking in 2005…

Eaves is a traditional number 9 who specialises in scoring his his head, as his dominating 6′ 5″ frame obviously helps him aerially against desperate defenders attempting to mark him.

A key feature of his play, alongside his aerial prowess, is his excellent hold-up play and his ability to bring others into play, whilst he remains a confident, consistent finisher in front of goal – he notched 18 goals last campaign and is just five off that tally already.

Leeds fans praise Shackleton display vs QPR

[ad_pod ]

Plenty of Leeds fans have been running the rule over the win against QPR, and they’re delighted with the performance of Jamie Shackleton.

Leeds’ defensive crisis went from bad to worse last week, as both Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas suffered long-term injuries.

The pair have joined Gaetano Berardi and Luke Ayling on the “unavailable until 2019” list, and Shackleton and Aapo Halme will have to step up during the busy winter period.

Playmaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals he would have snubbed Tottenham for Arsenal if they’d come knocking in 2005…

Shackleton did exactly that on Saturday, keeping QPR danger man Luke Freeman quiet and constantly bombing down the wing with some excellent overlapping runs.

The 19 year-old is a far better crosser than Dallas, who was the first choice at right back before his injury, and fans are full of praise for his display against QPR.

The Whites won 2-1 courtesy of a brace from Kemar Roofe, but it’s the young full back that is taking all the plaudits, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Pablo Zabaleta was West Ham’s unsung hero in victory at Fulham

West Ham supporters have been making a lot of noise in recent times after seeing their team pick up a fourth straight Premier League victory at the weekend.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men went into their encounter with basement side Fulham having got past Newcastle United, Cardiff City, and Crystal Palace in their preceding three matches, and thus seeking a fourth successive league win for the first time since 2014. And the Hammers managed to do just that as goals from Robert Snodgrass and Michail Antonio sealed a routine 2-0 success at Craven Cottage, a result which moved the East London outfit up to ninth place in the Premier League table.

Consequently, there have been many thrilled West Ham fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have been heaping praise on the majestic Antonio, who came into the side as a centre forward given the club’s injury problems, and produced a performance many a natural striker would have been proud of.

The former Reading and Nottingham Forest man worked extremely hard leading the line and deservedly got his goal in the first half, combining well up top with fellow forward Javier Hernandez to give Fulham all sorts of problems over the course of the 90 minutes.

And while Antonio certainly deserves praise for his exploits on Saturday, it was the performance of Pablo Zabaleta which was behind the Hammers’ fourth consecutive victory at the weekend, what with the veteran full back continuing to roll back the years with another impressive display.

The 33-year-old, who earns £75,000 a week as per Spotrac, has been a regular in Pellegrini’s team recently in starting 12 of their last 13 Premier League matches, and with performances like the one on Saturday, there is little chance of him losing his place anytime soon.

And that’s because the Argentina international was again magnificent in another commanding defensive effort from West Ham on Saturday, winning two of the three aerial duels he contested over the course of the 90 minutes (as per WhoScored), at the time completing all three of the tackles he attempted to thwart the advances of Ranieri’s Cottagers.

Add in four clearances and four interceptions, and the 33-year-old repeatedly was in the right place at the right time to relieve the pressure on Pellegrini’s backline, while his one key pass from 31 completed passes suggested that he was at times also an outlet going forward – quite simply, Zabaleta was excellent.

Overall, the Hammers have been outstanding in the last few weeks in picking up four wins and moving up the Premier League table, and while Antonio deserves plaudits for his efforts on Saturday, Zabaleta was the man behind the victory to further underline the huge part he has played in their terrific recent run.

Suat Serdar could be the perfect for Marco Silva’s team should André Gomes leave

André Gomes’ future remains uncertain, despite Everton being prepared to pay Barcelona a huge sum of money to pin the midfielder down on a permanent deal at Goodison Park.

But should Gomes return to Barcelona after his loan spell at the Toffees then manager Marco Silva would need find a suitable replacement for the Portuguese international.

And one player that the gaffer should definitely be monitoring is Schalke’s Suat Serdar.

The 21-year-old only joined Schalke in the summer and has already proven his capabilities of playing in any position in the midfield this season.

The German club has struggled to pick up points this season and are currently 14th in the Bundesliga, but Serdar has been the highlight of the team and has he shown great resilience to adapt to his new team since making the move from FSV Mainz.

From an Everton point of view, the club will be in need of a player like that if the La Liga champions decide to call Gomes back to the Nou Camp for next season.

Like with Gomes, will Silva be able to ease Serdar into his midfield and give him leverage of playing as a more central midfielder.

Although the German is more familiar with playing as a holding midfielder, Schalke boss Domenico Tedesco has even used him as an attacking midfielder this campaign.

By playing next to Idrissa Gueye, Serdar will be able to move up in attack, while his speed and work rate will also be beneficial to the club on defence.

Serdar particularly impressed in the group stages of the Champions League this season where Schalke managed to qualify for the Round of 16.

Silva could get a better idea of what the midfielder is capable of when he faces Manchester City in February in the first knockout round of the competition.

The experience he has been gaining from competing on Europe’s biggest stage at such a young age would also add to the importance of having him in a setup like Everton, who are looking to build a strong squad for the future.
