Confira abaixo.

– Dia 22 de julho;
– Dias 7, 8 e 9 de setembro;
– Dias 12, 13, 14 e 22 de outubro;

Steven Smith's Test opening stint over with middle-order return for India

Chair of selectors George Bailey confirmed that Smith had requested to move back down the order prior to Cameron Green’s injury

Alex Malcolm14-Oct-20241:36

What’s the logic of moving Smith back down the order?

Steven Smith won’t open the batting against India in the Border-Gavaskar series with Australia’s chair of selectors George Bailey confirming that Smith had indicated his desire to move back down the order, and that it was set to be accommodated even prior to Cameron Green’s injury.Speculation had swirled around Smith’s batting position dating back to Australia’s last Test series against New Zealand in March after his eight innings at the top of the order had yielded just 171 runs at 28.50.Despite Smith making the initial request to open the batting back in January, which allowed for Green to slot in at No. 4, Bailey confirmed that Smith, in conversations with captain Pat Cummins and coach Andrew McDonald, had requested a move back to the middle-order prior to Green’s summer-ending back injury.Related

Cummins to prepare for Test summer in Pakistan ODIs, Marsh and Head on paternity leave

“Pat, Andrew and Steven Smith had been having ongoing conversations separate to the untimely injury to Cameron anyway,” Bailey said on Monday after the announcement of the ODI squad for the Pakistan series and the Australia A squad for the India A tour.”And I think Steve had expressed a desire to move back down from that opening position. Pat and Andrew have confirmed that he will be dropping back down the order for the summer. So, yeah, clearly we’ve got a No. 4 spot to fill and an opening spot to fill.”Bailey did not rubberstamp that Smith would slot in at No. 4 for the first Test against India which starts on November 22 in Perth and was careful to reiterate that Cummins and McDonald were the ones who decided the batting order. He added that the order was still not set in stone given there is five weeks to go before the first ball is bowled.Bailey did hint that Smith would have moved regardless of Green’s injury but he would not divulge how they would have configured the top six had Green been fit to play.”Part of those discussions have been had and what it might look like,” he said. “But I guess once you do get moving parts, a lot of those conversations become null and void.”0:56

Steven Smith: ‘Bumrah is the complete bowler’

Time for a specialist opener? It seems very likely that Australia’s selectors will pick an opener to replace Green and return Smith to his preferred position. Bailey was asked whether the need for an extra bowling option in the top six was necessary, given Green’s absence and queries over Mitchell Marsh’s bowling capabilities. But he was quick to note that Australia’s attack had played without an allrounder before.”They’ve done it in the past,” Bailey said. “You don’t know how each Test is going to play out in terms of the workload for the quicks, or how much of an impact Nathan Lyon’s going to have across the summer. We certainly have been and will continue preparing for Mitch Marsh to be able to bowl some overs as well, and that’s been part of his management and build for the last couple of months. So there’s other ways. There’s teams that have played, and we’ve been a team that has played, without an allrounder in the past. There’s more than one way to structure up a team.”All eyes then turn to Australia’s domestic openers to see which one will emerge from the pack to win a place alongside Usman Khawaja. Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft and New South Wales’ teen sensation Sam Konstas were the three openers named in the 17-man Australia A squad that will face India A in two four-day games starting on October 31 and November 7.Matt Renshaw, who was the reserve batter in the Test squad for Australia’s last two series against West Indies and New Zealand following David Warner’s retirement, was not named in the A squad but Bailey said it shouldn’t be taken to mean they have moved on from him.”No, we still really like Matt’s ability to play,” Bailey said. “As far as Australia A selection goes, part of the process around that is trying to identify opportunities that may come around in the short term for any opportunities that that might pop up, but also making sure that we do keep an eye on developing opportunities for those players who may become important in different roles in the future as well.”So whilst there’s an Australia A squad there, I think Matt Renshaw, Pete Handscomb, Nic Maddinson as three examples are guys who we’ll continue to watch really closely in Shield cricket.”Bailey did suggest that the 19-year-old Konstas could put himself in the mix for the opening slot for India if he continues to perform following his twin centuries in the opening Shield round.”He’s in the mix as are plenty of others,” Bailey said. “I certainly don’t want to single him out. I think the consistency of Cam Bancroft over a number of years, the consistency of Marcus Harris over a number of years, they’ve both had a look at Test cricket as well. So I don’t think there’s any need at this stage to put undue pressure expectation on Sam.”He’s five games into his first-class career. He’s had a good start to that, and he certainly looks like he’s got a well organised game that we’re really excited and looking forward to seeing at the A level, and we’ll just continue to watch as that progresses.”Bailey also noted that Bancroft’s untimely pair against Queensland in the opening round of the Shield season would not count against him.”I spoke to Cam after that game, I sort of jokingly said to him, if he [wasn’t] in such good nick, he might have played and missed those as well,” Bailey said. “So that might be a really good sign for the rest of the summer. There’s plenty of batters that have managed to get a feather on an early Michael Neser ball. So no harm done. He’s certainly got credits in the bank. His consistency over a number of years has been phenomenal, as have a number of those other players I’ve mentioned. A one-off game like that wasn’t going to have any impact.”

Man Utd now keen to sign £20m star who Michael Carrick called "terrific"

As they prepare to step up their chase for Benjamin Sesko, Manchester United are now also reportedly keen to sign a talented midfielder who former star Michael Carrick labelled “terrific”.

Man Utd readying first Sesko offer

Despite missing out on European football last season, Manchester United have maintained their attraction this summer and have welcomed both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo as a result. Both attacking additions had other options, but chose to hand Ruben Amorim two instant upgrades in his Old Trafford frontline.

It’s a decision which some may question, but one that Sesko could now follow. According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are now readying their first bid to sign the RB Leipzig star, who favours a move to the Red Devils over Newcastle United this summer.

Whilst many have suggested that United have simply won the bidding war to sign players such as Cunha and Mbeumo, Amorim has insisted that money has not been the deciding factor.

He told reporters: “Cunha and Bryan, they had different solutions [offers]. They had Champions League offers. And they wanted to come here. People that say that they come here because of the money… that is a lie. That I know for sure. So, I’m really happy with that.

“That is the key point. They have to want to come here. I think what we can do to the fans is that we want players who have proved [themselves] already.”

Even with Sesko potentially following suit, however, Manchester United’s business may not be done there. Reports are now suggesting that they’ve also set their sights on signing a midfield talent this summer.

Man Utd keen to sign Hayden Hackney

According to GiveMeSport, Manchester United are now keen to sign Hayden Hackney ahead of interest from Tottenham Hotspur this summer. The Middlesbrough midfielder is keen to leave the Teesside club and is willing to wait it out for the likes of Spurs and potentially United to come calling in a deal worth around £20m.

Of course, if the Red Devils want to know more about the England U21 star then they could turn towards Michael Carrick for answers. The former Old Trafford star worked with Hackney for three years at Middlesbrough and was often full of praise for the 23-year-old.

Hayden Hackney for Middlesbrough.

The former Boro boss told reporters after the midfielder signed a new contract at the club in 2022: “I think it’s the right thing, it’s fair from both sides,” said the head coach.

“Hayden has been terrific since I came and the couple of games before that he played really well. That’s kind of how it works, you get rewarded for your good work. He fully deserves it. He’s been a credit to himself and his family with the way he’s handled it.”

Celtic make offer to sign attacker compared to Jota as Hoops receive reply

Celtic are planning a busy end to the transfer window with Brendan Rodgers wanting at least three more signings coming through the door. The Hoops boss wants to sign a new winger, striker and centre-back to compete for the Scottish Premiership and in Europe.

Rodgers has already made six signings this summer but believes more signings will allow them to compete on multiple fronts, especially if they qualify for the Champions League.

The first of these new signings have been identified as Celtic have put in a bid for one of their long-term forward targets.

Rodgers and Celtic bid for Jota-like winger

Celtics hunt for a new winger might come in the form of long-term target Michel-Ange Balikwisha. Balikwisha is similar in his position and style of play to Jota, as per Football Transfers, so he would be a suitable replacement while the Portuguese star is recovering from his injury.

Michel-Ange Balikwisha in action for Royal Antwerp.

Sports Witness have reported that the Hoops’ interest in Balikwisha first started last summer when Rodgers attempted to sign him. The report also shares that Celtic and Royal Antwerp had negotiations on his signing and that injuries to the Belgian forward halted the deal.

This summer, Celtic are seen as ‘currently the most concrete option’ for Balikwisha’s next team. The Scottish champions have reportedly put in a bid of unknown value, however, that was rejected by Antwerp. It seems the 24-year-old could cost Celtic up to £4.7 million as Antwerp are hoping to recoup most of what they spent on him in 2021.

Balikwisha injury concerns

Celtic have a long-term interest in Balikwisha, and with a similar profile to Jota, he could be a good fit to join the club. However, the deal has failed to come to fruition once before because of his injuries, and it’s certainly a factor that needs to be taken into consideration.

Even in Balikwisha’s best season at Antwerp, he missed 10 games through injury. However, his best seasons are far less concerning than his worst, as last year he was only available for 17 of Antwerp’s 46 games.

It is not certain that, just because Balikwisha has experienced these injuries at Antwerp, that he would continue to at Celtic. A change in medical staff and physio department might be needed to help the 24-year-old train so that his injuries are not as frequent, but there’s no guarantee of this, and he may just be an injury-prone player.

Celtic will have to take this into consideration when they decide whether or not to make a new offer. From the report, this has been an issue that has deterred them from this transfer in the past, so Rodgers and his team need to decide whether he is worth the money.

West Indies will be without veteran allrounder Stafanie Taylor for their upcoming white-ball tour of India. The 33-year-old is currently rehabilitating from an injury, according to a CWI release, and will not be available for the three T20Is and three ODIs in India.Deandra Dottin, who returned to West Indies’ squad for the T20 World Cup earlier this year in the UAE, two years after announcing her international retirement, is set to make her ODI comeback during this tour.Dottin had last played an ODI in March 2022 but her recent white-ball form is encouraging. According to ESPNcricinfo’s Smart Stats, she was among the most impactful players in the 2024 T20 World Cup and in the WBBL earlier this month, she had smashed an unbeaten 46 off 18 balls at a strike rate of 255.55 to secure Melbourne Renegades’ win against Adelaide Strikers in Adelaide.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Seamer Shabika Gajnabi and wicketkeeper-batter Rashada Williams are back for both the ODI and T20Is after having missed out on the T20 World Cup squad. This is a chance for them and other players to impress the Women’s Premier League scouts.”We want to get more girls involved with franchise cricket moving forward and looking toward India, it’s always good to play in front of the Indian IPL teams,” Shane Deitz, the West Indies coach, said. “It is good for our ladies to start getting their names in front of those people, to hopefully open some opportunities in the future.” Deitz also drew confidence from the T20 World Cup where West Indies qualified for the semi-finals. “We want to take the good momentum we gained at the T20 World Cup into this series,” he said. “We showed that we can compete against the top teams, which was pleasing.” Mumbai will host the three T20Is before the series ends with three ODIs in Vadodara. West Indies will arrive early in India and will tune up with a ten-day acclimatisation camp. The ODI leg carries crucial points for the ICC Women’s Championship. West Indies last played a white-ball series in India in 2016. Rahmat's gritty hundred extends Afghanistan lead

Ismat remained unbeaten on 64 with rain forcing early stumps

Abhimanyu Bose04-Jan-2025

Rahmat Shah made 139 on the third day•Zimbabwe Cricket

Afghanistan dragged themselves to a position of advantage on an attritional third day, with Rahmat Shah’s gritty century, his third in Test cricket, headlining their much improved batting display from their first innings. On the second day where 13 wickets fell, Afghanistan conceded an 86-run first-innings lead to Zimbabwe and lost three wickets before wiping out even half the deficit. But on Saturday, Rahmat, with help from Shahidullah and debutant Ismat Aslam, stretched Afghanistan’s lead beyond 200 with three wickets still remaining, before rain forced early stumps. For Zimbabwe, Blessing Muzarabani added two wickets to his overnight tally of two, while Richard Ngarava struck twice, including the prized scalp of Rahmat, but they know with Ismat still at the crease along with Rashid Khan, who is capable of scoring some quick runs, they are going to be staring at a steep chase on a pitch where batting fourth is a daunting proposition.Afghanistan’s innings revolved around two partnerships. The first was a 67-run stand between Rahmat and Shahidullah that saw the visitors take a 50-run lead by the time it was broken. The pair got together after Afghanistan lost two wickets in the first hour of play while still 17 runs behind. From the way Rahmat started the day, it was evident he wanted to bat long for Afghanistan to get into a winning position. He played out 19 balls before scoring the first run off his bat on the day.Ngarava removed the nightwatcher Zia-ur-Rehman the very next ball, and dismissed Afsar Zazai soon after. This prompted Rahmat to take the initiative as he punished two consecutive bad balls from Muzarabani – a full toss and a half-volley – with drives down the ground for boundaries. There was a short rain delay that followed, after which the two dealt in singles till Afghanistan were in the lead in the 30th over.Rahmat and Shahidullah took on Sikandar Raza and Newman Nyamhuri for two boundaries off the next two overs before Rahmat brought up a half-century off 99 balls. The boundaries kept coming as the two trudged along to lunch with a 39-run lead.In the fourth over after tea, a smart piece of captaincy brought about Shahidullah’s downfall.Blessing Muzarabani accounted for two more wickets on Saturday•Zimbabwe Cricket

With Muzarabani testing him outside off from around the wicket, Craig Ervine brought on a silly point fielder and the next delivery, Shahidullah fended at a length ball in the corridor to offer the simplest of chances to Takudzwanashe Kaitano at silly point.Zimbabwe knew they had to capitalise on the opportunity, and put the screws on Afghanistan.Ismat, who was out without scoring in the first innings, copped a blow on the helmet trying to duck under a Muzarabani bouncer that stayed low and needed multiple check-ups from the physio over the next few overs.Rahmat survived an lbw chance when Raza, who toiled away for 23 wicketless overs in the day, got one to spin in sharply to strike his pad only for the umpire to turn it down. Rahmat responded by dancing down the track and lofting him down the ground for a boundary before he took a hit on the shoulder from an Ngarava short ball. But the two were unfazed and went about steadily increasing Afghanistan’s lead. Rahmat brought up his century with a single of Nyamhuri off 209 balls, following up on his double in the first Test.Ismat, who was on 16 off 46 at the point, then started to shift gears with two boundaries off Nyamhuri before tea. After tea, there were 11 consecutive overs of spin, but Raza and Bennett couldn’t break through or keep the scoring rate down to apply pressure. As soon as the new ball became available, Zimbabwe found some immediate chances. Ngarava drew the edge from Ismat but he was dropped by Ervine at first slip, when he was three runs short of his fifty. One over later, Ismat brought up a half-century.The set batters used the extra pace of the new ball to cash in on a few more boundaries before Muzarabani finally broke the stand on 132 – the highest for the seventh wicket for Afghanistan.Muzarabani got a length ball to seam in past Rahmat’s inside edge and hit his back pad. Rahmat wasn’t best pleased when the umpire ruled him out leg before, but with no DRS available in this series, he had to walk back after a marathon innings.Rashid then quickly moved to 12 off as many deliveries, hitting Nyamhuri through midwicket for a boundary off what proved to be the last ball of the day before the players were called off for rain.

Howe's next Gordon: Newcastle make move to sign "exceptional" £26m star

Newcastle United drew a blank against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday, unable to find a breakthrough despite Ezri Konsa being shown a red card for dragging Anthony Gordon to the turf after the hour mark when through on goal.

It’s a tired storyline at this point (we apologise), but there was an Alexander Isak-shaped absence at the front of Eddie Howe’s system, with the Sweden striker on strike as he pushes to secure a move to Liverpool before the September 1st transfer deadline.

Gordon deputised as Newcastle’s number nine, something he has done multiple times in the past, but lacked cutting edge, albeit covering much ground, with Sofascore recording the Three Lions star clocked 9.9km across the contest.

There’s much to look forward to for those of a Magpies persuasion this season, even with the acknowledgement that the summer transfer window has drained the water from the crest of a wave the club rode from the 2024/25 season.

But Gordon is not an out-and-out striker; his best qualities lie elsewhere. For that reason, it’s crucial that Howe solves this quandary in the next two weeks.

Newcastle's ongoing transfer plans

Newcastle have been frustrated in their bid to sign Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, who had removed himself from first-team training in the hopes of signing for the St. James’ Park side. It offers a stark parallel to Isak’s situation.

Yoane Wissa

The noise around a potential move for Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson seems to have been drowned out in recent days, although rumours are mounting regarding a deal for Paris Saint-Germain striker Goncalo Ramos, who already has two goals for Luis Enrique’s side this season.

With Callum Wilson having left the club at the end of his contract last term, it’s clear that signings are still needed up front – even if Isak ends up staying – else the Tynesiders could be blighted in their pursuit of more glory under Howe’s wing.

However, Newcastle aren’t only looking at the front of the ship. In fact, the club have held talks with one of their Premier League rivals as they weigh up a move for a rising talent at the other end of the field.

Newcastle in talks to sign Premier League prospect

According to Caught Offside, Newcastle are among the growing list of clubs to have made an enquiry to Manchester City regarding the potential transfer of Rico Lewis.

Manchester City's Rico Lewis

Lewis, 20, has already been the subject of a formal approach from Nottingham Forest this month, which is believed to have totalled €30m (£26m).

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

A versatile and technically gifted player, Lewis is held in high regard by Pep Guardiola and his staff, who would like to keep him on the books.

Why Newcastle want to sign Rico Lewis

Newcastle look to have succeeded in their efforts to rebuff summer interest in Tino Livramento, mainly from Manchester City, but that doesn’t mean they are against signing someone from Pep Guardiola’s brood.

Lewis is a top talent, with Guardiola even remarking back in 2023 that the England U21 international is “one of the best I’ve ever trained by far.”

A trophy-rich start to life as a professional has seen Lewis, who has featured 95 times for the senior side, foster his natural qualities at the highest level, but it’s unlikely he’ll earn the minutes he craves across the coming years if he remains at the Etihad Stadium.

However, at Newcastle, he could become a superstar; after all, journalist Antonio Mango has remarked in the past that he’s “born to play football.”

With greater responsibility handed to him by Howe, the ball-playing defender, who is versatile and has played a number of fixtures as a midfielder, could become Newcastle’s next version of Gordon, who joined from Everton in January 2023 but had previously been a member of Liverpool’s academy, discarded before making gains through his formative years.

Against Aston Villa, Newcastle showed themselves to be organised and structured in defence, persistent and tenacious in the press, eager to spark a swift transition. Blunt? Sure, but United remain one of the best-coached teams in the league, with enough talent to surge past the perfunctory opinions of a drop-off after a testing window.

Did Newcastle not struggle for the best market last summer? How did that go? Howe knows what he’s doing, all right, and if he signs a youngster like Lewis, also praised for his “exceptional” ability by Guardiola, he could will and guide him toward stardom, as he did with Gordon.

Gordon, indeed, claimed Newcastle’s Player of the Year award after the 2023/24 campaign, notching 22 goal contributions across the Premier League campaign and leading journalist Henry Winter to note he’s a winger who is “thrilling to watch” and “scares defenders.”

Gordon has been such an important part of Newcastle’s rise over the past few years, and he stood up and took centre-stage in the absence of Isak on Saturday, underscoring his commitment to the cause.

In Lewis, Howe could land his next protege, one who shares his countryman’s tactical fluidity and is rooted in his completeness of style, with Sofascore noting that he completed 91% of his passes in the Premier League while also winning 59% of his ground duels, which is highly impressive for a young talent regularly pitted against the division’s finest wingers.

There’s plenty of competition for his signature, but then that was the case with Gordon too, and Lewis would be wise to recognise the shrewdness in joining Howe’s system, with the manager proficient in growing uncut gems into sparkling stars.
