Oli Slipper believes embracing of the Hundred can help to shore up County Championship

Oval Invincibles could be rebranded with the three-feathers crest of Surrey County Cricket Club, according to chairman Oli Slipper, who has told county members that the Hundred needs to be embraced to help shore up the whole of English cricket, including the County Championship.Surrey were notable sceptics when the Hundred was conceived in 2018, in part because of the impact its hosting would have on red-ball cricket at the height of the English summer, and also because its existence would undermine the existing T20 Blast, for which the club had long attracted full houses at the Kia Oval, the largest venue in the country.Now, however, Slipper says the club hierarchy has been won over by the Hundred’s revenue-generating potential and, in an end-of-year letter to the club membership, says Surrey will use their share of any equity from the ECB’s review of the tournament’s ownership model to bring Oval Invincibles under the club banner, and reinforce their claim to be “the greatest club in the world”.”For many long-standing and committed members of this club, the greatest challenge to the red-ball game is the Hundred,” Slipper wrote. “I fully understand and appreciate those concerns, but I want to assure you that, as chair, I will do nothing that will imperil the future of either this club or County Cricket.”The reality is the Hundred has been a huge success both from a ticketing and TV perspective,” he added. “It is also an extremely important revenue stream for the game of cricket, generating roughly 25% of the ECB’s revenue which funds the broader game of cricket, and helps maintain a viable 18 county ecosystem.”Despite the ECB’s ongoing review into the Hundred, in which various options have been tabled – including a rise to ten teams and an “open pyramid” option featuring all 18 counties in a two-division format – Slipper noted that the competition’s broadcast deal with Sky Sports is locked in until 2028 and therefore scrapping it is “not an option”.Instead, he said that the desire of the ECB and its 19 shareholders to “evolve and improve” the Hundred, including by handing ownership of the competition back to the counties and MCC, presented a “unique opportunity” for Surrey to exert a greater influence on the direction of the sport in England and Wales.Related

“Whilst other counties will undoubtedly opt to sell equity in their team, under my stewardship Surrey will take a longer-term view and look to own and operate our own team within this tournament,” Slipper wrote. “We must find a way of ensuring the history, heritage and legacy of this club is represented in each month of the English summer.”We are not just a venue rented out to the highest bidder, we are the greatest club in the world. We are the pacesetters in English cricket and if any club expects to play domestic cricket at The Kia Oval, they should also expect to wear the Three Feathers of Surrey.”Therefore, it is my ambition, that we get to a point where anyone who plays domestic cricket at this ground does so in the knowledge that they are standing on the shoulders of giants such as Edrich, Hobbs, Stewart and Hollioake.”That ambition also extends to the women’s game, with Slipper signalling the club’s intention to take full ownership of the regional side, South East Stars, so that the “Three Feathers are represented at all levels of women’s domestic cricket”. Lancashire have signed New Zealand batter Tom Bruce as their second overseas player for 2024. The 32-year-old will link up with the club in April and, like Australia’s Nathan Lyon, is expected to be available across formats for the full season.Bruce, who has been capped 17 times in T20Is, averages 49.85 in first-class cricket and his arrival will help cover for the departure of Dane Vilas after seven seasons at Lancashire.Bruce’s most-recent New Zealand appearance came in 2020, while he captained the A side to victory in two four-day games against Australia A last September. His likely availability while the T20 World Cup is being played was cited as a factor in his signing by Mark Chilton, Lancashire’s director of cricket performance.”Tom will be available throughout the 2024 season, and this was a big draw for myself and Dale [Benkenstein] when going into the market for our overseas signings for this year,” Chilton said. “This will allow Tom to settle in, become part of the squad and create consistency and stability in our team selections throughout the summer.”Tom is a hugely experienced cricketer, and we feel that his skillset will be a good fit within our squad. Tiago Volpi foi o responsável por cuidar da defesa tricolor no começo da temporada. Em maio, se despediu do clube após acertar com o Toluca, do México – três anos e meio depois, com 195 jogos usando a camisa do São Paulo.

Neste ano, chegou a atuar em apenas sete jogos pelo Tricolor – sendo seis no Paulista e um contra o Jorge Wilstermann, pela Copa Sul-Americana, ainda na fase de grupos – que inclusive foi seu último pelo time.

Ainda quando estava na equipe, Volpi perdeu muito do seu espaço para um dos nomes que havia sido anunciado no final de 2021: Jandrei. No rodízio imposto por Ceni no começo do ano, Jandrei começou a se firmar na posição.

Entretanto, com a saída de Volpi, o São Paulo passou a contar com somente duas opções: o próprio Jandrei e a cria de Cotia, Thiago Couto. Neste cenário, a busca por mais uma opção para o gol já era algo eminente. Mas a situação se agravou após um acontecimento complicado envolvendo o defensor – até então titular.

No dia 17 de julho, Jandrei deixou uma partida contra o Fluminense no Morumbi com fortes dores nas costas, após uma pancada com o zagueiro Leo. Chegou a desfalcar a partida seguinte, e dez dias depois, foi constatada uma fissura na região lombar. Esta fissura o tirou de campo por quase um mês.

Neste contexto, Felipe Alves foi anunciado. Quanto a Thiago Couto, chegou a atuar por quatro jogos seguidos, mas sua pouca idade e a falta de experiência fizeram perder espaço para o recém-chegado.

A priori, era esperado que Jandrei retornasse da lesão e voltasse para a titularidade no gol. Mas não foi bem assim que aconteceu. Quando se recuperou e foi autorizado pelo departamento médico do clube para atuar, o desempenho recebido foi inferior ao que era mostrado antes de se machucar.

Desde setembro, após a derrota por 1 a 0 na semifinal da Copa do Brasil pelo Flamengo, não entrou mais em campo. Quem assumiu o lugar – e inclusive foi titular na grande final da Copa Sul-Americana – foi Felipe Alves, que passou a surpreender.

No total, Jandrei disputou 43 jogos o ano todo e Felipe Alves 25. No Brasileiro, por sua vez, Jandrei esteve em 18 e Felipe Alves em somente um a mais. Mas o que chama atenção são as estatísticas.

No Brasileirão, os números de Felipe foram melhores. Foram 39 defesas contra 35 (de acordo com dados do FootStats), se superando também em defesas complicadas (19 contra 12).

Neste cenário, Felipe Alves se consolidou na posição e rompeu a visão de ‘Jandrei como solução’, que veio à tona com a queda no rendimento de Volpi, lá no começo do ano.

A dúvida agora é para 2023. De acordo com apurações do LANCE!, mais um arqueiro estaria na mira do São Paulo: o goleiro John, do Santos. John tem 26 anos e vínculo com o Santos até 2024. Após perder espaço para João Paulo na titularidade do gol, ele quer sair para conseguir jogar em outro clube. Foi informado que, se houver propostas, o Peixe não tentará segurá-lo.

Quanto a Jandrei, o L! também apurou que, por conta da sua perda de espaço na equipe titular, empresários do goleiro estariam tentando oferecê-lo para o futebol italiano.

Another uncapped allrounder Sayali Satghare has been named as her replacement at a reserve price of INR 10 lakh.India spin allrounder Kanika Ahuja, who plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), was also ruled out with injury and Shradda Pokharkar was picked as her replacement. Pokharkar, a left-arm seamer who represents Maharashtra, was signed at a reserve price of INR 10 lakh. Ahuja had played seven of RCB’s eight matches at the WPL last year, scoring 98 runs and picking up two wickets. She also starred with an all-round performance in the ACC Emerging tournament final against Bangladesh. Her replacement Satghare picked up eight wickets with an economy of 5.9 for Mumbai on their way to winning the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy .The second season of the WPL starts in Bengaluru on February 23.

Fakhar smashed 78 off 40, while Rizwan was unbeaten on 75 off 46, as Azam Khan ended the match with a flurry for sixes to level the series 1-1.Zaman joined Rizwan after the openers fell cheaply. Saim Ayub’s dry run continued, caught by a diving Curtis Campher third ball, while Babar nicked a harmless medium-pace delivery from Graham Hume in the following over to leave Pakistan 13 for 2 in a chase of 194.But Rizwan, who has been demoted in Ayub’s favour of late, demonstrated his value in the powerplay by combining dazzling slog sweeps with judicious placement. “كانت والدتي ربة منزل، وكان والدي يعمل في مصنع، لا شيء مميز، غادرت المنزل في الرابعة عشرة من عمري لأنتقل إلى الجانب الآخر من بلجيكا وأعيش مع عائلة حاضنة، فقط لألعب كرة القدم، كان قرارًا صعبًا عليهم، أما الآن، كأب، فأتفهم الأمر، لو طلب مني ابني المغادرة بعد بضع سنوات، لما كان الأمر سهلاً، اليوم، يعمل والدي معي، ويساعدني في الاستثمارات”.

– كيف غيّر الثراء حياتك؟

– أي فريق هو الأفضل تجهيزًا في الدوري الإيطالي؟

“يتميز إنتر ميلان بثبات في الأداء مقارنةً بالفرق الأخرى، ولديهم قيمة كبيرة، واجهتهم في نهائي دوري أبطال أوروبا، لكنني أعتقد أن هناك العديد من الفرق في إيطاليا القادرة على المنافسة على مستوى عالٍ؛ حتى ميلان قد يكون خطيرًا، على الرغم من بدايته السيئة، يتميزون بالتركيز الكامل على الدوري”.

– نقطة قوة ونقطة ضعف لديك؟

“أتحدث أربع لغات: الإنجليزية، الفرنسية، الألمانية، والهولندية، أفهم القليل من الإيطالية، نقطة ضعفي؟ أحتاج إلى التخطيط والتنظيم، أحيانًا يصبح الأمر جامدًا”.
