Turner puts Scorchers' success down to 'confidence in the depth of our squad'

“We pick guys for a reason, we trust their skill,” Scorchers captain said of Connolly and Hobson

Teenager Cooper Connolly had only faced 11 balls in his fledgling BBL career, but captain Ashton Turner remained confident that he could help power Perth Scorchers to a fifth title under immense pressure.Turner’s faith was justified when 19-year-old Connolly became an instant hero at a heaving Optus Stadium after combining with unheralded Nick Hobson to lift Scorchers past Brisbane Heat in an absorbing final.”We pick guys for a reason, we trust their skill. We don’t need to tell Cooper how to bat, how to play the situation,” Turner said after Scorchers chased down 176 runs to win by five wickets.Related

“He’s a smart kid, he’s played enough cricket and he’s prepared himself for these moments.”If anything, if I tell him where he should be hitting the ball then he probably doesn’t play the shots we see tonight. That’s the beauty and the freedom of a young kid who’s just come onto the scene.”Scorchers’ latest BBL triumph was particularly satisfying because it reinforced their long-held core principles of building a reservoir of depth and sticking with homegrown talent. They had to lean on that after an injury-ravaged campaign, including losing star allrounder Mitchell Marsh for the entire season while spearhead Jhye Richardson didn’t return after suffering a hamstring strain mid-season.Cooper Connolly came out all guns blazing with a 11-ball cameo•Getty Images

It provided opportunities for Hobson, an accountant in his day job who played every match this season, and Connolly, Australia’s captain at last year’s Under-19 World Cup, who both have never played first-class cricket before.”We want players who are battle-hardened and ready for the international stage,” Turner said. “We have a lot of confidence in the guys we pick.”To get picked in our final XI, you’ve got to be a good player and we trust our selection processes and we trust what we’ve seen from these guys. The question is can they translate and perform in big moments?”Both Nick and Cooper have answered that question comprehensively.”Overshadowed by the dramatic finale, Turner had initially rescued Scorchers with a composed 53 off 32 balls on the back of a half-century under pressure in last year’s final against Sydney SixersThe Player-of-the-match performance capped a stunning season for the unassuming Turner, who has vaulted back into calculations for Australia’s T20 team strengthened by his impressive captaincy credentials.Turner played nine ODIs and 18 T20Is for Australia from 2017-21, but a form slump removed him from the selection frame.”It’s not so much a rescue mission as it may look from the outside – I’m doing my job,” Turner said about his ability to continually dig Scorchers out of trouble this season.”I said pre-game that great teams win big games and that was our responsibility tonight. We’ve been overwhelming favourites probably for the last few games we’ve entered.”It’s our responsibility to back that up and perform well. Fortunately we were able to do that.”While they bask in another triumph, planning will eventually start for Scorchers’ bid for a historic hat-trick of titles – a feat that has never been achieved in BBL history.”When BBL 13 comes along we will be well-planned, prepared and excited,” Turner said. “There will be more competition, we know that having been at the pinnacle of this competition for a couple of years that we will be the hunted and that’s okay. We’ll embrace that tag and we’ve got a lot of confidence in the depth of our squad.”

A desconfiança logo passou.

Newcastle chief using contacts to pursue cheaper goalkeeper alternative

Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell is reportedly looking to work his magic and sign a goalkeeping alternative to heavily linked targets James Trafford and Caoimhin Kelleher this summer.

New goalkeepers wanted at Newcastle

It seems clear that the Magpies will bring in a new ‘keeper at the end of this season, with Nick Pope turning 33 next month and arguably not quite the force he used to be, while Martin Duvravka is a good squad option instead of a No.1.

Burnley stopper James Trafford has been continually linked with a move to Newcastle in the summer transfer window, with the PIF confident of bringing him to St James’ Park. He is seen as a future regular England international, with his performances for Burnley this season helping them concede just 10 goals in 36 Championship matches.

James Trafford

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher has also emerged as a target for the Magpies, with the Republic of Ireland international possibly leaving Anfield in the summer.

Not only is the world-class Alisson keeping him out of the Reds’ team, but Giorgi Mamardashvili is also coming in from Valencia once the campaign comes to an end. For that reason, Kelleher may feel that a new challenge is required, with Newcastle a tempting option for him.

Mitchell eyeing "talented" Lucas Chevalier for Newcastle

According to a new update from Chronicle Live, Newcastle transfer guru Mitchell is eyeing a move for Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier this summer. It is stated that the Englishman is “using his extensive Ligue 1 contacts to scour the best of the French market where there are still some bargains to be had”, having been at Monaco before his move to St James’.

Paul Mitchell at Newcastle United.

While some Newcastle fans may prefer the idea of Trafford or Kelleher arriving this summer, given their experience of English football, Chevalier is a good alternative once the summer arrives and would cost less without the premium on trades between English clubs.

Still only 23 years of age, the Frenchman has already made 117 appearances for Lille, keeping 42 clean sheets in that time, and football talent scout Jacek Kulig has hailed him as a “talented” ‘keeper.

Regardless of who comes in, it does feel like the right time for Newcastle to make a change between the sticks, with Pope not necessarily representing the long-term answer there.

Newcastle now in talks with "amazing" in-demand UCL winner over summer move

He could complete a Premier League return…

ByTom Cunningham Mar 10, 2025

The England international has been an excellent servant for the Magpies, helping them reach the Champions League and proving to be an expert shot-stopper, but his quality with the ball at his feet has been fairly questioned, not helping Eddie Howe’s side be as effective playing a possession-based game.

Chevalier could prove to be a cheaper option than the others mentioned above, and given his age, Newcastle would be signing a player who should only improve as the years pass.

CSA ABRE A CONTAGEM LOGO NO INÍCIO

CRICIÚMA ADOTA POSTURA OFENSIVA E IGUALA O MARCADOR

TIGRE CONSEGUE A VIRADA

Aston Villa's "world-class" star is already becoming Emery's new Duran

Aston Villa’s January transfer window is proving to be a huge success, with the likes of Marco Asensio, Marcus Rashford and Axel Disasi all contributing to their recent run of form, including a 6-1 victory over two legs against Club Brugge in the Champions League.

Marco Asensio celebrates for Aston Villa

Unai Emery was able to bolster his squad options ahead of their European venture, as they now find themselves in the quarter-final of the competition, set to face PSG.

Whilst there was plenty of success in the January window, there was also a huge sale, which could be conceived as both positive and negative, as they received such a high fee but lost a very talented squad member.

The loss of Jhon Duran from Aston Villa

Aston Villa signed Jhon Duran from Chicago Fire in the January 2023 transfer window, joining the club for a fee of around £14.75m with a potential further £3m in add-ons. Duran made 78 appearances for the Villans, scoring 20 goals.

But, it was at the start of the 2024/25 season that the Colombian international really exploded into life, netting four Premier League goals in the opening five games, despite coming from the bench in all five, only totalling 131 minutes across that handful of fixtures.

He also shone on the continental stage, scoring that memorable goal against Bayern Munich. It’s a pity he didn’t see fit to stay in English football.

Al Nassr'sJhonDurancelebrates with Al Nassr's Cristiano Ronaldo after the match

Indeed, the 21-year-old striker’s excellent form saw teams from all over Europe interested in Duran, but Aston Villa decided to make the sale to Al Nassr, joining the Saudi Arabian club for a fee worth up to £71m, making it Villa’s second-highest fee received for a player, behind only Jack Grealish.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Aston Villa's new Jhon Duran

Luckily for Emery, the Midlands side has been able to replace Duran’s goal contributions from the bench with their January signing, Asensio.

The Spaniard has made eight appearances since joining the club, already netting seven times, despite only totalling 383 minutes played. Just like Duran, he has been a true super sub.

Whilst Asensio isn’t a centre-forward (as Duran was), he offers versatility across the front line, being a natural attacking midfielder who can also play off the right, drifting inside as a secondary number ten, or even as a false nine, something he did semi-regularly for PSG.

When you compare Asensio’s underlying numbers this season to those of Duran, you can see how the output has helped to ease the blow of losing their 21-year-old talisman, with the Spaniard not only replacing his goals, but also adding creative spark between the lines, helping to progress play and create chances for others as well as himself.

Former Arsenal, West Ham and Brighton defender, Matthew Upson, labelled Asensio “world-class” when speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, praising the 29-year-old’s “knack to pick up the right areas”. It’s safe to say he’s been a cracking signing.

Next season, Villa may look to replace Duran’s centre-forward position in the squad with a different profile, but with the likes of Asensio, Rashford and even Donyell Malen, who was also signed in the January window, Emery is clearly happy with the options at his disposal for the back end of this campaign.

Bangladesh have left out seniors Salma Khatun and Rumana Ahmed from their consolidated white-ball squad of 16 for the tour of Sri Lanka starting later this month. The Sri Lanka tour comprises three ODIs, which are part of the Women’s Championships, and as many T20Is.”The biggest challenge on this tour will be the weather and conditions,” Manjurul said. “We have built the team thinking of these two factors. We have taken some emerging cricketers, those who did well in the Under-19 World Cup recently. We have rested a few senior cricketers. We have a lot of cricket this year at home and abroad. Tom Bailey burst threatens Surrey unbeaten run

Lancashire turns tables on champions after Will Williams’ dogged, maiden half-century

ECB Reporters Network27-Jun-2023

Will Williams defied the Surrey attack to make his maiden first-class fifty•Getty Images for Surrey CCC

Tom Bailey took four wickets in 16 balls in an 11-over opening spell of 4 for 34 to reduce Surrey to 57 for 5 in an extraordinary final hour at the Kia Oval and give Lancashire the chance of inflicting a first defeat of the season on the Division One leaders. The county champions had earlier been frustrated by Will Williams, Bailey’s new ball partner, who as nightwatcher batted four-and-a-quarter hours for a defiant career-best 61 to leave Surrey needing 208 to clinch a sixth victory in eight matches this season. But by stumps on day three it was a Lancashire win that looked more likely as Bailey wrecked Surrey’s top order after the home side had eventually bowled out Lancashire for 293 in their second innings, held up by Williams’ stubborn resistance and also by a powerful 54 from Phil Salt, his second fifty of the game.Bailey’s magnificent opening burst brought him the wickets of Dom Sibley for 1 and Tom Latham next ball for a duck in his fifth over and then, in his sixth and seventh overs, the scalps of Jamie Smith for 4 and Ben Foakes for 5.Sibley and Latham were both well held at second slip by substitute fielder Rob Jones, Smith was leg-before shouldering arms to an offcutter and Foakes caught behind, pushing out defensively. And the drama continued when Surrey skipper Rory Burns fell for 20, caught at first slip from Jack Blatherwick’s fourth ball, in the 20th of the 24 overs Lancashire bowled in a memorable mini-session. Will Jacks remains 19 not out.Williams, a 30-year-old New Zealander with a UK passport, began the day on one not out in Lancashire’s overnight 113 for 4, representing an overall lead of just 27, but he withstood Surrey’s five-pronged pace attack – spearheaded by Dan Worrall’s 3 for 69 – almost until tea to make his maiden first-class half-century.Christchurch-born Williams’ previous top score in 54 first-class matches was just 38, made for Canterbury against Wellington in February 2020. This was his 75th first-class innings, with his 698 previous runs coming at the lowly average of 13, but Williams, playing straight and defending competently, helped Salt to add 95 in 37 overs for the sixth wicket.LV= Insurance County Championship title favourites Surrey resorted to a short-ball barrage against him after lunch, with the second new ball, and although Williams’ run-scoring then slowed to a trickle – he made just ten in almost 30 overs in the afternoon session – he still resisted courageously and, in all, faced 220 balls.Surrey had only enjoyed one success in a tense morning session, with Burns leaping high at mid-off to pull off a superb one-handed catch from Daryl Mitchell’s lofted drive at Worrall.New Zealand Test batter Mitchell, on 17 overnight, looked in good touch as he moved to 30 but in the 12th over of the day was left stunned by Burns’ athleticism as he somehow clawed down a ball that seemed to be clearing him. Then, on 150 for 5, with only five more runs added, Salt was dropped by Smith at extra cover off Tom Lawes, this time the fielder failing to hang on to a chance above his head.Williams, on 23, edged Sam Curran at catchable height between slip and gully but otherwise batted with relative comfort against the Surrey seamers. And when Jacks was called up for a few overs before lunch, Williams drove the offspinner straight for six to bring up Lancashire’s 200 and to take his own score to 49.The 30-year-old’s half-century arrived soon afterwards, from 124 balls, and Surrey’s frustration grew when shortly after lunch Salt was put down off Curran on 30 by Latham, diving to his right at second slip, in the first over with the second new ball.Another 32 runs were scored before Surrey could celebrate their sixth wicket of the innings, Salt being bowled behind his legs by Jordan Clark, the ball flicking his back pad on its way into leg stump as Lancashire’s keeper-batter aimed towards square leg.Balderson narrowly avoided being dismissed by his first ball, a vicious lifter which clipped an elbow on the way through to keeper Foakes, and the left-hander had made only 10 when he edged a drive at Sean Abbott to first slip.Williams needed some on-field treatment after taking one nasty blow on the bicep on 57, ducking into an Abbott bouncer, and his brave resistance finally ended four overs before tea when he gloved a short ball from Lawes into Smith’s hands at short leg.Bailey’s useful 25, including some robust off-side strokes, was cut short by a top-edged pull at Curran that was well-held on the deep square leg ropes by Worrall and Lancashire’s dogged second-innings effort was finally over when No 11 Jack Morley fended a Worrall lifter to short leg.

Better than Isak: The "best CF in the world" wants to sign for Liverpool

Liverpool have a striking problem. It’s funny, in a way, that there is so much negative noise around Arne Slot’s frontline, top scorers in the Premier League and firm favourites to lift the title by May.

But the hard truth is such concerns carry substance. Liverpool have tapered off in recent weeks, no longer playing the slick and dizzying football in the early months of the campaign, when teams of all shapes and sizes were put to the sword.

In the end, Liverpool were well beaten by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final. And that’s okay. It’s football.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot

But Slot and FSG know where they can improve next season. Anfield’s commanding lead at the top of the table is great enough to be called unassailable, but the frontline will still need to be chopped and changed during the off-season, for sure.

What's going on at number nine for Liverpool

Below, you’re going to see a rather concerning table. It tells the tale of Liverpool’s attacking success since the turn of the calendar year, with Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo the only two who can hold their heads high as far as goal threat is concerned.

Luis Diaz has only scored one goal across his past 18 matches, Diogo Jota just two – one of which came against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup.

Then there’s Darwin Nunez, who remains an unsolvable conundrum. He’s actually registered more goal involvements than everyone bar Salah in 2025, but the 25-year-old still flatters to deceive through the bulk of his time at Liverpool.

He came close to signing for Saudi club Al-Nassr in January, and while this didn’t come to fruition, the reliably informed Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the expectation is the Uruguayan will be sold at the end of the season.

Who to bring in his place? Well, Alexander Isak is the name on everyone’s lips, having dazzled for Newcastle this season. The Sweden striker has posted 23 goals and five assists across 32 matches in 2024/25, netting as Eddie Howe’s side beat Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has confirmed Liverpool are in the running, but at a reported £150m asking price (or even more), it’s not going to be an easy deal to engineer, and FSG’s frugal chiefs appear to be swivelling their heads elsewhere.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsak

So then, without any further ado, let’s take a look at the first-rate centre-forward who may grace Slot’s exciting project this summer.

England star wants to sign for Liverpool

According to Spanish reports, Liverpool have been monitoring Harry Kane’s situation at Bayern Munich, aware that the all-inspiring England captain has an attractive release clause in his contract, active from January 2026.

It’s thought Kane is considering a return to the Premier League and his ‘preferred destination’ is Anfield, which makes sense when considering FSG’s desire to sign a new striker.

Perhaps the most complete number nine in the business, the 31-year-old would be an incredible addition to Slot’s line-up and might just be the best signing sporting director Richard Hughes could make.

How Harry Kane compares to Alexander Isak

Kane may be 31, but exceptions can surely be made for the most incredible of world-class talents. Take Thiago Alcantara, for example, who joined the Reds from Bayern Munich (would you look at that) for £20m aged 29 in 2020, strengthening Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League-winning squad.

The bulk of Kane’s career came in north London, but he hasn’t exactly been shabby in the two campaigns since leaving Tottenham Hotspur. At Bayern, Kane has scored 76 goals and supplied 25 assists across 82 matches.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 1% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 10% for assists, the top 19% for shot-creating actions and the top 7% for progressive carries per 90.

Kane might be one of the deadliest finishers in the business, but he’s certainly no one-trick pony. Creative, dynamic and a tenacious leader, he embodies Slot’s virtues and would be the perfect central talisman as he chases down the record goals haul in the Premier League alongside teammate Salah.

Comparatively, Isak’s prowess stems from his athleticism, pace and multi-layered approach to the striking game, but he’s not as complete as Kane. Ange Postecoglou has even called the veteran a “generational player,” and he’s probably got that one about right.

Further to that point, following Kane’s dominant Champions League performance against Bayer Leverkusen, trouncing their Bundesliga rivals, journalist Matt Law hailed him as “the best striker in the world.”

Isak’s haul of 23 goals this season is impressive stuff, but it’s not on par with Kane’s 32-goal haul, whose creativity also knows no bounds and would make considerable success regarding Anfield’s overall attacking fluency.

Just imagine, were Kane in the middle of the line instead of, say, Nunez, Slot wouldn’t just wield a deadly goalscorer but a player who could elevate each of those around him, lessening Salah’s burden to no end.

If there is an inkling of a chance that FSG can get this one over the line, they must pounce on the opportunity and spark a new illustrious era on Merseyside.
