Better signing than Kimmich: Man City could land £70m Luiz alternative

Manchester City have been rather active this month, signing three new players during the January window.

Pep Guardiola doesn’t appear to be stopping there, however, as several other names have been linked with a move to the club.

The Spaniard has bolstered his attacking and defensive options. Now is it time for a new midfielder to join the club?

Man City's search for a midfielder

Douglas Luiz has been heavily linked with a move back to City, although Juventus don’t want to sell as they would prefer a straight loan deal.

Elsewhere, Joshua Kimmich is another name that is circulating. Guardiola managed the German at Bayern Munich, and, therefore, he knows his qualities better than most.

The Etihad side could forget about both of these players, however, as Atalanta midfielder Ederson is being eyed for a potential move to Manchester.

That’s according to the Times, as reported earlier this week, with the Guardian also relaying that he has been valued at £70m by the Italian side in a bid to warn off potential suitors such as City.

A move for the Brazilian would be more worthwhile than pursuing Luiz, who would only join on a temporary basis.

The 25-year-old may even be a better signing than Kimmich too, especially with his form for the Europa League holders in recent months.

How Ederson compares to Kimmich

Kimmich is arguably one of the finest midfielders in Europe, winning everything available to him during his spell with Bayern. Amassing over 400 competitive appearances for the club, he has nothing left to prove.

His arrival would be hailed, no doubt, but the German turns 30 shortly and is approaching the final few years of his career.

Ederson, on the other hand, is just 25 and has yet to reach the peak years of his time in the game.

This season, the midfielder has played 30 times for Atalanta, scoring twice and registering two assists as the club are making waves in the league and Champions League.

Domestically, he has created five big chances, averaging one key pass per game while succeeding with 0.6 dribbles each match.

Kimmich has created 13 big chances while averaging 2.5 key passes in the Bundesliga, proving that he is a class apart.

In Europe, however, Ederson registers more shots per 90 (1.51 vs 1.29), has a higher pass success percentage (89.5% vs 87%), succeeds with a higher percentage of take-ons (57.1% vs 33.3%) and has won more aerial duels (six vs one) in the Champions League this season.

Dubbed a “machine” by writer Carlo Garganese following Atalanta’s incredible victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final last season, Ederson has proven that he can shine in Europe’s premier club competition.

Ederson for Atalanta.

Kimmich may be a step ahead domestically, but judging by the statistics, European football suits the Brazilian down to the ground.

Add in the fact he is five years younger than Kimmich, Guardiola could sell a wonderful signing by bringing the 25-year-old to Manchester.

Advantage Somerset as Jack Brooks four-for trumps Sam Hain's 67

Veteran quick helps secure first-innings lead but two early wickets keep relegation battle alive

A superb post-tea burst by veteran Jack Brooks gave Somerset the edge over Warwickshire in an engrossing, high-pressure LV=Insurance County Championship clash at Edgbaston.Defeat for either side from this game would leave them in serious jeopardy of relegation and that pressure has hung heavy on the batters on a slow pitch against some good bowling. After two days it’s advantage Somerset, just, after they rallied from 82 for seven to reach 219 and then bowled the home side out for 196 as 38-year-old Brooks took four for 40 including a spell of four for seven in 27 balls. The visitors closed the second day on 13 for two in their second innings – 36 ahead.Somerset were given something to bowl at by lower-order resistance led by Lewis Gregory (60, 97 balls) and Sajid Khan (53 not out, 64) despite Mohammed Siraj’s debut five-for (five for 82). At 141 for four in reply, Warwickshire were edging towards ascendancy but Brooks stepped up with a blistering spell. His blitz included the vital wicket of Sam Hain who passed 1,000 first class runs for the season on his way to 67 (166 balls). Hain defied valiantly but, as has often been the case this season, lacked support.Somerset resumed on the second morning on 182 for eight and lost Gregory to the fourth ball when he edged Siraj behind but last pair Khan and Brooks added 37 to lift the total beyond 200. Khan completed his fourth first-class half-century before Brooks skied Henry Brookes to point.Somerset then took their momentum into the field and reduced Warwickshire to 22 for three in the 14th over. Josh Davey struck third ball when Rob Yates nicked to wicketkeeper James Rew. The keeper accepted further catches when Alex Davies and Dominic Sibley edged Gregory.Hain and Will Rhodes (38, 99 balls) steadied the innings with a stand of 73 in 29 overs before Rew’s gloves closed on another catch, tickled down the leg side by Rhodes off Kasey Aldridge. While Hain and Jayant Yadav were adding 46 either side of tea, the game remained evenly poised, but both fell in Brooks’ blistering burst. Jadav and Michael Burgess were bowled through gates, Hain was adjudged lbw and Brookes edged to slip. After Danny Briggs and Olly Hannon-Dalby had their furniture rearranged by Aldridge and Davey respectively, Somerset had a lead of 23 with eight overs to bat in the day. Warwickshire needed to hit back…and did, Siraj having Imam-ul-Haq caught at second slip and Yadav turning one into Aldridge’s stumps. Somerset still have their noses in front but where this tense, intriguing, low-scoring, high-stakes contest goes next, who knows?

"Robust" rising star reveals why he just blocked chance to join Aston Villa

In a transfer window full of positives, Aston Villa still found themselves on the end of a surprise rejection from a rising star who has now explained his January decision.

Aston Villa transfer news

Into the Champions League last 16 and battling for the chance to qualify among Europe’s elite for a second season in a row, Aston Villa are a difficult club to turn down these days. It’s an offer that Marcus Rashford couldn’t refuse amid several interested parties. It’s even one that three-time Champions League winner Marco Asensio didn’t refuse and rightly so.

Paris St Germain's MarcoAsensioduring the warm up before the match

Those in the Midlands are no longer left to escape relegation courtesy of a goal-line technology malfunction or final day battle. Those days are long behind them. Instead, they’re a side to be reckoned with at their best under Unai Emery, having earned a point against Juventus and even defeated Bayern Munich earlier in the current campaign.

So, to reject the Midlands club in their current impressive state seems as strange decision, but teenage forward Kparobo Arierhi has explained why he did exactly that during the January transfer window.

The 18-year-old told Africa Foot, as relayed by Sport Witness: “I wanted the opportunity to play in the first team. That’s why I chose to sign with Lillestrøm, despite interest from Aston Villa and Lyon.

“Signing my first professional contract with Lillestrøm is an incredible feeling, I’m making my dream come true. My goal is to establish myself in the first team, score a lot of goals and help the team win matches.”

Aston Villa may now use contract doubts to land "strong" Duran replacement

He’s a man in demand…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 6, 2025

Choosing to join Norweigian side Lillestrom instead after leaving the Beyong Limits acedemy in Nigeria, Arierhi may yet pop up Aston Villa’s radar once again when he’s ready for his next move, having take his first step into European football recently.

"Robust" Arierhi made intelligent decision

Whilst turning down the interest of a Champions League club may seem an absurd choice, it was the right one for Arierhi. Making his first move into European football, the last thing that the 18-year-old needed was for his game time to become limited, which would have been the case in the Midlands. The young forward needs senior minutes which should arrive in Norway.

Described as “robust” by Youth Scouting, Arierhi remains one to watch at 18 years old and if his move to Lillestrom goes to plan then Villa’s January interest won’t be the final time that a top club come calling.

As Aston Villa’s rise under Emery continues, their transfer activity could yet take them to Norway and back to a young gem in Arierhi.

South Africa eye series and Super League lift

It will be far from straightforward for the visitors though, with India’s second-string side having already pushed them all the way in Lucknow

Karthik Krishnaswamy08-Oct-20224:06

What changes should India and South Africa make?

Big picture A narrow win in Lucknow gave South Africa ten points and lifted their World Cup Super League tally to 59, but they are still 11th, and a long way behind eighth-placed West Indies, who have 88 points.Given that they have forfeited 30 points by pulling out of the scheduled three-match series in Australia early next year, South Africa’s chances of direct qualification for the 2023 ODI World Cup hinge on picking up maximum points from a small number of games. After the two remaining matches of this India series, they have just two more Super League assignments – against Netherlands and England at home next year. They will want to go into that home summer with 79 points in their bag, which means winning in Ranchi and then Delhi.Related

The Lucknow ODI showed it will be a far-from-straightforward task, with a second-string India side pushing South Africa all the way despite seeming to be out of the contest two-thirds of the way in. India are without most of their first-choice players, but the group that is playing this ODI series is both hugely talented and extremely hungry, knowing how much competition there is for every slot in every format.Even Shikhar Dhawan, who is captaining the side and is arguably an all-time great in ODIs, can’t take his place for granted come the 2023 World Cup. South Africa can expect another dogfight, therefore, when they get on the field on Sunday.Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan will hope they can make a better impression•BCCI

Form guideIndia LWWWW (last five completed ODIs, most recent first)

In the spotlight Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan spent approximately an hour each at the crease in the first ODI, and scored 19 off 42 balls and 20 off 37, respectively, as South Africa’s quicks extracted prodigious seam movement with the new and newish ball. Conditions in Ranchi are unlikely to be as difficult for top-order batters, and Gaikwad and Kishan will hope they can make a better impression against high-quality fast bowling.Since his debut in 2017, Aiden Markram has the second-worst average of 23.26 against spin among all top-four batters from Full-Member teams to have faced at least 200 balls from spinners in ODIs (West Indies’ Brandon King, who averages an astonishingly poor 11.09 against spin, heads that list). Markram endured a brutal working-over at Kuldeep Yadav’s hands in Lucknow, and he will have to prepare to face a lot more of the left-arm wristspinner through the rest of the series.Team news Washington Sundar has come into India’s squad as a replacement for Deepak Chahar, who is out with a back issue. With Chahar absent, it is unlikely India will make changes to their pace attack from the first ODI. But they could look at a swap in the spin department, with the allrounder Shahbaz Ahmed potentially coming in for Ravi Bishnoi, who endured a difficult ODI debut in Lucknow.India (possible): 1 Shikhar Dhawan (capt), 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 4 Ishan Kishan, 5 Shreyas Iyer, 6 Sanju Samson (wk), 7 Shardul Thakur, 8 Ravi Bishnoi/Shahbaz Ahmed, 9 Avesh Khan, 10 Kuldeep Yadav, 11 Mohammed SirajMarco Jansen (left) might come into South Africa’s XI•Sydney Seshibedi/Getty Images

Dwaine Pretorius is out of this series and the upcoming T20 World Cup with a broken thumb, and while South Africa have named Marco Jansen as his replacement for this series, they are yet to pick one for the World Cup. Jansen and Andile Phehlukwayo are the two main contenders, and it is possible South Africa may bring either or both into their side to give them game time. With India targeting Tabraiz Shamsi mercilessly through both the T20I and ODI legs of this series, South Africa may pick just the one spinner.South Africa (possible): 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Janneman Malan, 3 Temba Bavuma (capt), 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Heinrich Klaasen, 6 David Miller, 7 Wayne Parnell/Andile Phehlukwayo, 8 Keshav Maharaj, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Tabraiz Shamsi/Marco Jansen/Anrich Nortje, 11 Lungi NgidiPitch and conditions Rain reduced the Lucknow ODI to a 40-overs-a-side contest, and the forecast for Sunday suggests there is a 20% chance of rain in Ranchi as well. The pitch at the JSCA Stadium usually has runs in it, with three of the five ODIs at the venue producing 280-plus first-innings scores. Neither style of bowling has enjoyed a marked advantage over the other in those five matches, with fast bowlers averaging 33.69 and conceding 5.36 runs to the over, and spinners returning corresponding figures of 36.80 and 5.35.Stats and trivia Quinton de Kock and Dhawan are among a select group of five batters to have scored 5000-plus ODI runs at a 45-plus average and a 90-plus strike rate. The others in that group are widely acknowledged to be among the greatest ODI batters of all time: Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Viv Richards. Wayne Parnell is four wickets short of becoming the 13th South Africa bowler to 100 wickets in ODIs. Of the 28 South Africa batters to have scored at least 1000 ODI runs, only Shaun Pollock and Nicky Boje – both bowling allrounders – have worse averages than Markram’s 27.77.Quotes “I wouldn’t say it’s a second-string Indian side. India is blessed with so much talent that they could probably field four to five proper international sides. A lot of the guys in the Indian team have IPL and international experience. Shikhar Dhawan has played numerous ODIs; Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson – the talent that’s in the Indian team, I wouldn’t look at it as weakened. They are still world-class performers out there.”

Gambhir picks Hardik, Shaw as India's future captaincy candidates

“Prithvi Shaw is one I feel can be a very aggressive captain, a very successful captain because you see that aggression in the way a person plays the sport”

Hardik Pandya recently led India to 1-0 T20I series win in New Zealand•Getty Images

Prithvi Shaw could be a future India captaincy candidate, according to former India batter Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir also picked Hardik Pandya, who has already led India in T20Is, as a future India captain, but Shaw was a more left-field choice as he has not played for India since July 2021.Hardik has been touted as a possible successor to Rohit Sharma, at least in T20Is, following India’s semi-final exit at the T20 World Cup last month. Over time, he has racked up some captaincy experience too. In May, he captained debutants Gujarat Titans to their maiden IPL crown and then led India for the first time in T20Is on a tour of Ireland for a 2-0 series win. More recently, he led India to a 1-0 series win in the T20Is in New Zealand, in the absence of senior players such as Rohit, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.”Hardik Pandya obviously is in line,” Gambhir said at an event organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) in New Delhi on Sunday. “But that’s going to be unfortunate for Rohit because I think judging his captaincy in only one ICC event is not the right way to probably judge him.”The other pick, Shaw, has struggled to find a regular place even in India’s second-string squads over the past year, and Gambhir didn’t specify in which format he saw Shaw as a potential captaincy candidate. Over the course of his short career, Shaw has had to cope with more than just a loss of form. Ever since he was suspended for a doping violation in 2019, his fitness and lifestyle issues have been under scrutiny. In March this year, Shaw was reported to have failed a yo-yo test. His score of less than 15 was far from BCCI’s prescribed minimum score of 16.5 for men.Having made his Test debut in 2018, the same year he led India to Under-19 World Cup glory in New Zealand, Shaw has managed to play just four more Tests. Shaw’s limited-overs appearances have been sporadic, too. He last played for India in July 2021, when he was part of a second-string squad that toured Sri Lanka for three ODIs and as many T20Is.”The reason I’ve picked Prithvi Shaw, I know a lot of people talk about his off-field activities, but that is what the job of the coach and the selectors are,” Gambhir said. “The selectors’ job isn’t just to pick the 15, but also to get people walk the right path.”Prithvi Shaw is one I feel can be a very aggressive captain, a very successful captain because you see that aggression in the way a person plays the sport.”Shaw’s recent appearances have come for Mumbai in the domestic circuit, where he was the second-highest run-scorer at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20s. His 332 runs came in 10 innings at a strike rate of 181.42, and included a career-best 61-ball 134 against Assam. His form in the 50-over competition, the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, was patchy, with his only two half-centuries coming against inexperienced Mizoram and Railways. Overall, he managed just 217 runs in seven innings at an average of 31. He was shaded by fellow top-order batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made 396 runs in six innings to top the run charts for Mumbai, who exited in the pre-quarter-finals.Over time, Shaw has racked up some captaincy experience with Mumbai, apart from captaining India Under-19. At the junior level, he led a batch of players, many of whom are regulars in the IPL currently.

Worth more than Bruno: Man Utd must rue selling "phenomenal" ace for £15m

The 2024/25 campaign has been one to forget for Manchester United, with the Red Devils constantly falling well below the levels expected by the fanbase.

Ruben Amorim joined the club in November, trying to provide an upturn in results after Erik ten Hag’s dismissal, but so far has done so to no avail, still sitting closer to the drop zone than the top four.

His side have already exited the Carabao Cup, with their 15th placed standing in the Premier League all but ruling out automatic qualification for a European spot ahead of next season.

Manchester United manager RubenAmorim

However, they’re still in with a chance of winning the FA Cup and the Europa League, with the new manager having the opportunity to end the disappointing season on a positive note.

If he is to do so, he may be reliant on one player who’s often been the man to dig the side out of trouble since his big-money move to Old Trafford a handful of years ago.

Bruno Fernandes’ time at Man Utd

Attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes joined United back in January 2020, making himself an integral part of the first-team setup after his move which totalled £68m.

The Portuguese international has nearly racked up 300 appearances for the Red Devils, even taking the reins as captain, showcasing how pivotal he’s been to the club despite their lack of success.

He’s registered double figures in combined goals and assists in every season he’s spent as a player in the North West, with his best season undoubtedly being in 2020/21 – notching 28 goals and 18 assists across all competitions.

The 30-year-old has often been the creative spark under Amorim, registering 21 combined goal contributions throughout the current season, undoubtedly the shining light through what has been a year to forget for supporters.

However, despite his impressive form at United, he’s now valued lower than one player who was prematurely offloaded under the former management team.

The former United star who’s now worth more than Bruno

United’s academy has been highly influential in recent years, often producing a catalogue of high-quality talent that have made the transition into first-team stars.

Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho are just two examples within Amorim’s current side who have developed through the youth setup before seamlessly making the jump into the professional game.

Anthony Elanga was another player who appeared to make the jump, breaking through into the first team under Ralph Rangnick, registering four goals and four assists, including a crucial strike against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League.

However, he was sold in the summer of 2023 by Ten Hag, joining Nottingham Forest for just £15m – a move that would transform his career in the Premier League, with United undoubtedly ruing his departure a few years on.

The Swedish international has registered 25 combined goals and assists over the last two seasons, playing a huge role in the Reds’ unexpected push for a Champions League spot this season.

Elanga endured a run that saw him provide a goal contribution in six consecutive matches in the league, before notching a hat-trick of assists in the 7-0 thrashing of Brighton and Hove Albion at the City Ground.

He’s subsequently matched or bettered Bruno in various key areas throughout 2024/25, further showcasing how much he’s developed since departing the Red Devils.

At the age of just 22, Elanga, who’s previously been dubbed “phenomenal” by journalist Zach Lowy, still has bags of time to develop further, but he’s already seen a steep upturn in his value after Forest rejected a £50m bid for his services from Newcastle United in the summer.

His subsequent value is higher than that of current star Fernandes who’s only valued at £45.5m by Transfermarkt despite his own impressive form at Old Trafford.

Given the numbers produced by the attacker, coupled with the lack of attacking threat currently at Amorim’s disposal, it certainly was a mistake for the hierarchy to approve of Ten Hag’s decision to sell the forward.

However, United’s loss is Forest’s gain, with Elanga potentially able to provide the goods over the next couple of months to help complete what would be a fairytale season for the Reds – adding insult to injury given the Red Devils’ current standing.
