Jean Pyerre e Paulo Miranda

Not just Zirkzee: Man Utd were let down by 4/10 star who lost the ball 34x

Manchester United could not carry on their winning ways after victories against Southampton and the 7-0 thrashing of Barnsley following the international break. The Red Devils were held to a 0-0 draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, with both sides having golden chances to walk away with all three points.

Erik ten Hag’s side dominated the first 45 minutes and went close a couple of times. They hit the bar twice in a matter of seconds, with Alejandro Garnacho rattling the woodwork and Bruno Fernandes following suit from the rebound. Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who is a graduate of United’s academy, was superb throughout.

Palace went close at the end of the first half through Eberechi Eze, but his shot was straight at goalkeeper Andre Onana. The England international also missed a golden chance towards the end of the second period, but could not put the finishing touches on a superb move from Palace.

Ten Hag and his squad will no doubt be frustrated to drop two important points on the road. Although Selhurst Park is not an easy place to go, they had chances to win the game. There were some disappointing performances throughout, and striker Joshua Zirkzee struggled for service.

Zirkzee’s stats vs. Palace

It was certainly a frustrating outing from United’s number 11, who has not found the back of the net since a debut goal against Fulham on the opening day of the Premier League season. Saturday night’s performance was just as frustrating for the Dutchman.

It was a game where the 23-year-old simply got no service, and although he dropped deep to link up play fairly well, he was essentially feeding off scraps in front of goal. That is certainly reflected in his stats from the game.

According to Sofascore, the former Bayern Munich attacker had 23 touches and managed just one shot, from which he did not find the target, with an expected goals total of 0.10xG. He did, however, create two chances during the game.

It was a sentiment shared by The Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst. He gave Zirkzee a post-match rating of 6/10, explaining his overall play was “decent”, although he looked “blunt again”.

It was Zirkzee who was ultimately the first to be withdrawn on the hour mark, but his captain, Fernandes, did not have his best game either and was perhaps fortunate not to be replaced himself.

Fernandes’ stats vs. Palace

So often the man to dig the Red Devils out of a hole, their talisman Fernandes could not make the difference in South London. He did not play with his usual spark and was at times wasteful in the final third.

Ten Hag’s skipper is so often the man to drive his side forward, but on Saturday evening, he could not quite make the difference. His lack of decisive influence on the game was showcased in his post-match stats.

Despite having 112 touches, the Portugal international created just two chances against the Eagles. He lost the ball an incredible 34 times, completing 60 out of 83 passes, at a 72% pass accuracy. He was impressive off the ball, however, winning seven from nine duels and four from four tackles.

The United skipper received an even lower rating than Zirkzee from Luckhurst, who graded his performance a 4/10. The journalist explained that, in a game where United’s attacks were well-structured, ‘Fernandes’s wastefulness jarred with their approach’.

It will not be a game the 30-year-old will look back on with fond memories. Whilst the Red Devils cannot expect to rely on him every week, Fernandes will no doubt be frustrated with his contribution and look to better himself next time out against FC Twente in the Europa League.

Ireland, South Africa eye full World Cup Super League points after first ODI wash-out

Quinton de Kock and Anrich Nortje could slot back into the XI while William Porterfield might be retained as opener

Big picture This series didn’t get the David and Goliath stereotype Andy Balbirnie joked about in the lead-up to the first ODI, but it did get another: rain. Only 40.2 overs were possible on Sunday, the 500 spectators that braved the wet weather saw as much cricket as they did rain and there’s scant evidence to suggest what this series may hold, except one complete match fewer.Ireland’s batting was steady without being explosive, South Africa’s bowling was economical without being particularly incisive, and conditions seemed to reward patience. Both teams had plenty on display but did not have the opportunity to see the results of their efforts because of the wash-out.The hosts will be pleased with the way William Porterfield and Balbirnie set up the innings and the hitting power of Harry Tector and Mark Adair, while Lungi Ngidi made the biggest impression among the South African pack. After being expensive in the Caribbean, Ngidi seemed to rediscover his control and built pressure at the start of the Irish innings. Andile Phehlukwayo also enjoyed a successful comeback to the national side after warming the bench in the West Indies, and will want to continue to establish himself as the premier seam-bowling allrounder. The shared points mean South Africa have moved off the bottom of the World Cup Super League and now lie above Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. They will want to pick up all 20 points that remain on offer to jump into the top five and feel more secure about their chances of automatic qualification, however early these days may be.Ireland have now leapfrogged Netherlands, who beat them in their most recent ODI series, and sit ninth. Any points they can take off South Africa in the next two matches will put them in a strong position ahead of their series against Zimbabwe.Form guide (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Ireland LWLLLSouth Africa LWLWWIn the spotlight Ireland’s scoring rate in the first ODI was described as “old-fashioned” by pundits, including Niall O’Brien, and their pedestrian pace will need some acceleration if they are to challenge some of South Africa’s big-hitters. For that, they’ve got George Dockrell. The left-arm-spinner-turned-batter was the top run-scorer in Ireland’s Inter-Provincial Limited Over Cup that finished last month. He scored 364 runs in five innings, including four fifties and a hundred, at a strike rate of 87.92, the second highest among the top-10 run-scorers.Kyle Verreynne was tidy behind the stumps in the first match and even if he has to hand the wicket-keeping gloves back to Quinton de Kock, he will want to grab the opportunity to establish a spot in the middle-order. Verreynne is competing with Heinrich Klaasen as South Africa search for someone who can operate as both a stabiliser for the mid-section of their innings and a finisher. On a ground with small boundaries, Verreynne will have few better opportunities to show his attacking abilities.Team news William Porterfield returned to open the batting with great success and is likely to be retained in that position. Ireland chose to play Dockrell as a specialist batter and will likely continue to do so, with the option to use him in a two-spinner, three-seam attack.Ireland: (possible) 1 Paul Stirling, 2 William Porterfield, 3 Andy Balbirnie (capt), 4 Harry Tector, 5 George Dockerell, 6 Lorcan Tucker (wk), 7 Simi Singh, 8 Andy McBrine, 9 Mark Adair, 10 Josh Little, 11 Craig YoungSouth Africa rested de Kock and Anrich Nortje from the first ODI but may want to bring them back for a crucial match in the series. That would mean Janneman Malan misses out and Keshav Maharaj may have to sit out, with the hope for further opportunities in the T20Is.South Africa (possible): 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Aiden Markram, 3 Temba Bavuma (capt), 4 Rassie van der Dussen, 5 Kyle Verreynne, 6 David Miller, 7 Andile Phehlukwayo, 8 Kagiso Rabada, 9 Anrich Nortje, 10 Lungi Ngidi, 11 Tabraiz ShamsiPitch and conditions After persistent rain caused Sunday’s ODI to wash out, clear skies are expected for Tuesday, which bodes well for a complete game. On the evidence of the overs that were played in the first match, run-scoring was not as free-flowing as South Africa may have hoped with Ireland’s run rate hovering below five runs an over. There was plenty of seam movement on offer and with the amount of rain experienced in the last few days, a green-tinged top should see more of the same.Stats and trivia Paul Stirling needs another 164 runs to become the first Ireland player to reach 5,000 ODI runs. Andile Phehlukwayo has represented South Africa 100 times across the three formats.

Coube a Paulo Sousa conduzir a Viola à Liga Europa.

"I’ve heard" – Loads of clubs tracking selfless £130k-p/w Aston Villa star

Aston Villa took on European heavyweights Bayern Munich on Wednesday night and came out on top, continuing this impressive rise under Unai Emery, a rise that is now seeing one of their key players looked at by teams across Europe, according to a new report.

100% ground duels: 9/10 Aston Villa star was as key as Duran & Martinez

Aston Villa managed to pull off a fantastic Champions League win by toppling Bayern Munich 1-0.

ByKelan Sarson Oct 3, 2024 Aston Villa latest updates

The 1-0 victory over Bayern continues what has been another impressive start to a season for the Midlands side. Emery has got his team competing on multiple fronts, but it appears he still wants more, as they eye potential new recruits for 2025. The Villans have already been linked with moves for Valencia’s Hugo Duro and Atletico Madrid’s Samuel Lino in recent days, as Emery looks to improve his forward line in the New Year.

Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney.

They are not the only players being watched by the Premier League side, as Villa had scouts in place on Tuesday night to watch Rav van den Berg and Hayden Hackney of Middlesbrough. But as Emery eyes potential new arrivals at the start of the New Year or next summer, the latest transfer update will come as a concern, as one of Villa’s important players is being linked with a move away.

Aston Villa's £130k-p/w star tracked by European clubs

According to Aston Villa’s former senior scout Mick Brown, Ollie Watkins is being closely watched by teams from across Europe. Brown was at Villa Park until 2021 and has continued to maintain close connections with the club, and he has now told Football Insider that Watkins’ ability has significantly improved, and he could now be ready for a bigger step into one of Europe’s super elite.

Brown told Football Insider: “I’ve heard there are plenty of top clubs interested in him. He’d definitely be able to make the step up. When I was at Villa, I was always on to the management about getting Ollie Watkins from Brentford.

At that time, he was one of the few players, and still is, that wants to run in behind. All the strikers want to come to feet now and lay it off to a midfielder and play from there. Sometimes you’ve got to play off the shoulder and run in behind.

If you drew up that profile, he’s your man. That’s what he does. It’s something different these days. The lad has improved his whole game since we signed him, and he scores goals.

Plus, he runs in behind, which is not just about him; it’s about the rest of the team. He gets the team up the park and inspires them. That type of player will always attract interest from top sides wherever they are. He’s a game-changer, and he’s shown that for Villa and for England.”

The 28-year-old, who was dubbed a “nightmare to play against” by Conor Coady, has been at Villa since 2020, when he joined from Brentford, and he has been an important figure for the Midlands side for a number of seasons. In the 2023/24 campaign, Watkins netted 27 goals in all competitions, and that earned him a place in England’s Euro 2024 squad. The forward is said to be on a weekly wage of £130,000, which could well be doubled if he were to get a big transfer.

Paul Stirling's maiden T20I hundred lifts Ireland to thumping win

Chasing 179, Zimbabwe were never really in the game as Ireland’s seamers made excellent use of a slow pitch

Firdose Moonda01-Sep-2021

Paul Stirling’s first T20I hundred gave Ireland a 2-1 series lead and ensured Zimbabwe have still never successfully chased a T20I target greater than 172. Stirling scored almost two-thirds of Ireland’s total runs and shared in two 50-plus partnerships to take Ireland to 178. Then, their attack, led by the returning Mark Adair, who missed the first two matches recovering from back spasms, and Josh Little ensured Zimbabwe were never in the hunt.Adair bowled three one-over spells and took a wicket in each of them while only conceding 11 runs and made good use of the slower ball, Little’s 3.2 overs cost 18 runs and the rest of the wickets were shared between Shaun Getkate, Ben White and a run-out. Perhaps Ireland’s only disappointment was that their batting was so good it meant debutant William McClintock played no part in the game, apart from on the field. He may get another opportunity in less than 24 hours, though. The fourth match takes place at the same ground on Thursday.Stirling’s seventh heaven
A period of sublime form – it started with a match-winning knock in The Hundred final – has seen Stirling climb to seventh on the all-time T20I run-scorers’ list. He controlled the innings from start to finish and set the tone when he slog-swept the fourth ball he faced over long-on for the first of eight sixes. His was a knock of power and placement in equal measure. He opened the face of his bat at just the right moment to run Tendai Chatara to third man, saw off a maiden over by Richard Ngarava and then opened the hip to pull him for four, drove Ryan Burl through the covers and reached 50 off 47 balls with inside-out shot past point. He raced through his second fifty runs, using just 23 balls to get there, including three sixes in Chatara’s final over. Stirling reached the 90s with a short-arm jab over midwicket, then hit Chatara back over his head, and finally punched a low full-toss to deep square to bring up his century. His celebration was muted, with just a bat tap into the ground and a small acknowledgement to his team-mates and the 500-strong crowd, but there’s no doubt they will appreciate the magnitude of his achievement.Stirling is the second Irish men’s player to score a T20I hundred, the first to do so at home, and is joint-fourth on the list of most fifty-plus scores in T20Is, with David Warner and Martin Guptill – 19.Where’s Wessley?
Craig Ervine looked an in-control captain in the two matches before this one and has handled his bowlers with assurance but he might have considered doing things slightly differently today. With Tendai Chatara and Luke Jongwe leaking runs and pace off the ball proving useful, Wessley Madhevere’s offspin could have been used for more than two overs, especially as he was Zimbabwe’s most economical bowler. In Ervine’s defence, Madhevere’s spell came before Stirling started to accelerate and the captain may have defaulted to his more experienced players but Madhevere has given Zimbabwe an option to explore further in future. His domestic record is nothing to scoff at. In 20 T20s, Madhevere has bowled 32 overs and has an economy rate of 7.46.Haven’t you seen enough of him?
On cue, Ireland used an offspinner to open the bowling for them and it was someone Zimbabwe had seen more than enough of. Stirling, who batted through the Irish innings, was at the top of his mark as Zimbabwe’s innings started. His first two deliveries were worked around for singles but then Madhevere got hold of him with three successive fours: two sweeps either side of a skip down the track to hit him over mid-off. Stirling’s only over cost 14 runs and Zimbabwe were off to a good start but it didn’t last.Top-order problems
Madhevere only faced two more balls before he tried to hit Mark Adair over mid-off but sliced the ball straight to Andy Balbirnie in the covers and the problems began. Tadiwanashe Marumani, Regis Chakabva and Dion Meyers were dismissed within 21 balls of each other to leave Zimbabwe 56 for 4 inside eight overs and underline some serious problems in the top five. While Ireland have had five batters score 30-plus runs in the three matches in the series so far, Zimbabwe have only had two: Regis Chakabva in the first match and Craig Ervine in this one. Look a little deeper, and the gulf between the two sides becomes even more glaring. Ireland have scored one fifty (O’Brien in the second match) and one hundred (Stirling, today) while Zimbabwe have had no half-centuries in the series so far.

Afghanistan is in the midst of major upheaval, with the Taliban taking back the political reins following the withdrawal of US troops from the country. It remains to be seen how cricket is affected by these events, though ACB CEO Hamid Shinwari has been quoted saying he expects the sport to carry on as before.”We will resume our office from tomorrow and the national camp which was underway ahead of the Pakistan series in Sri Lanka will also resume after a two-day break with the change in regime,” Shinwari told on Monday.ESPNcricinfo understands that Naveen, who was the top wicket-taker in the Vitality Blast in England, is already serving his quarantine in St Kitts, which will host the entire CPL season starting August 26.CPL 2021 squad changes•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The top-tier Afghanistan players – Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman – weren’t part of the initial list. They are expected to be playing for Afghanistan in their three-match ODI series against Pakistan, which is scheduled to take place at Hambantota in early September.Meanwhile, it is understood that South Africa allrounder Chris Morris, who was the Royals’ first-round pick, has opted out of the tournament for personal reasons. In his place, the Royals have signed the New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Glenn Phillips, who has been in good form in the Vitality Blast as well as in The Hundred. Phillips has been a CPL regular, ever since his Auckland coach, Mark O’Donnell, drafted him as a replacement for Shakib Al Hasan at the Jamaica Tallawahs in 2017. He has been the Tallawahs’ leading scorer for three consecutive seasons.South Africans Anrich Nortje and Rassie van der Dussen, who were originally drafted by the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, will miss the tournament, as will Sri Lanka’s legspin-bowling allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga. All three will be involved in South Africa’s tour of Sri Lanka, which begins on September 2 and will clash with the CPL.Saint Lucia Kings, though, have retained Faf du Plessis as their captain. du Plessis had recently been ruled out of the Hundred after failing to recover adequately from the concussion he suffered during the PSL two months ago. It remains to be seen whether he is fit again for the CPL.Seam-bowling allrounder Isuru Udana is set to turn out for the reigning champions Trinbago Knight Riders, having retired from international cricket following Sri Lanka’s white-ball home series against India. He will be joined by Tim Seifert and Yasir Shah at TKR. Shah, who is currently part of the Pakistan squad in the Caribbean, will replace Sandeep Lamichhane, while Seifert, who was not initially retained at the draft by TKR, is back in for the Zimbabwe allrounder Sikandar Raza. David had a breakout PSL and then extended his strong form at Surrey.
