‘I had to sacrifice some of my favourite dishes for 20-25 days’ – Avesh Khan on his new diet•Delhi Capitals

Avesh Khan had to wait almost three years to get MS Dhoni’s wicket. He had watched a simple chance put down off his bowling back in IPL 2018, but he got Dhoni to chop on when the Delhi Capitals took on the Chennai Super Kings in the second match of IPL 2021 on April 10.”Three years ago, I had a chance to take Mahi ‘s wicket, but somebody had dropped the catch,” Khan told the Delhi Capitals media team. “But now my dream of taking Mahi ‘s wicket is fulfilled, so I am very happy about it. Since he has not played competitive matches for some time, we had planned to put pressure on him and because of that pressure I could take his wicket.”Related

Dhoni fined for slow CSK over rate

Playing for the Delhi Daredevils in 2018, as the Capitals were called then, Khan had come on to bowl the 19th over against the Super Kings with Dhoni batting on 31 off 14. Then, Dhoni’s mistimed pull spilt out of Colin Munro’s hands on the first ball. Dhoni ended with 51 not out off 22 as the Super Kings beat the Daredevils by 13 runs in a high-scoring match.Khan didn’t bowl to Dhoni in the return fixture in 2018, but did bowl to him last year, conceding nine runs in five balls, including two fours. In 2021, Khan was bowling the 16th over, and Dhoni lasted only two balls, walking back for a duck, in his first competitive match since IPL 2020. This time, the Capitals reversed the result from 2018 in another high-scoring game, sealing victory by seven wickets. Khan returned an excellent 2 for 23 in four overs, having taken Faf du Plessis’ wicket in the game’s second over earlier. Khan’s effort in a game where the Capitals hunted down a target of 189 in 18.4 overs meant he was the best bowler as per ESPNcricinfo’s Smart Stats, returning a hefty 94.24 points, almost double that of next-best Chris Woakes, who had 49.97.”I was quite happy with my performance in our first match, and I am even more happy because the team has won,” Khan said. “I put the team in a good position with the wickets of Mahi and Faf du Plessis. After winning the first match, everyone’s confidence goes up.”Rishabh (Pant, the Capitals’ captain) backed me and gave me the second over of the match and I took a wicket in that over itself. A wicket in the initial part of a fast bowler’s spell is really good for his rhythm. du Plessis is a good batsman and if he continued to play, then he would have made things difficult for us.”Khan, who has been a stellar performer in domestic cricket for Madhya Pradesh, also revealed he had put in considerable work before IPL 2021, including hiring a personal dietician and losing weight to improve his fitness.”I have reduced my weight by five kgs,” he said. “I have hired a personal dietician and I plan my diet according to the dietician’s directions. My diet plan changes on a day-to-day basis, depending on my gym and training sessions and rest days. Improving my fitness has helped me a lot. I am feeling light, and I feel great when I run. I had to sacrifice some of my favourite dishes for 20-25 days, but that has helped me to stay on track for achieving some of my personal goals.”Khan was a somewhat surprise inclusion in the Capitals’ first XI for their opening game of IPL 2021, with the team leaving the likes of Umesh Yadav on the bench. The competition for places will only hot up when Ishant Sharma – also in the squad – recovers from a niggle that kept him out in the first game. With Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje having sealed two fast-bowling spots, there is likely to be room for only one more Indian pacer in the XI, but Khan welcomed the opportunity to be part of a high-class pace attack.”I think we have the best fast bowling line-up in the tournament,” Khan said. “Kagiso Rabada won the Purple Cap last season, Anrich Nortje bowled the fastest ball in IPL history last season, Ishant Sharma is an experienced bowler, and Umesh Yadav has been bowling well in the nets as well. There’s good competition among the fast bowlers in our team.”

Liverpool hit gold on Klopp signing who’s now worth more than Van den Berg

The Premier League's pull factor swells each year, with England's top flight consistently outspending its rival European divisions and exerting dominance in the continent's elite club competition – with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City winning three of the past six editions.

Combined, English clubs have far outstripped the remainder of Europe's top-five leagues in regard to expenditure over the past three campaigns, equating to at least 40% of the continent's spending on each occasion.

Financial superiority seems to hold a healthy degree of sway. This is personified over on Merseyside by Sepp van den Berg's expected decision to sign for Brentford over Bayer Leverkusen, with both clubs willing to meet Liverpool's demand of £20m plus £5m in bonuses for the Dutch centre-back's sale.

Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal undefeated last season, with defeat in the Europa League final against Atalanta their only blemish, and given that their fielding interest in three of their centre-backs, Van den Berg would be a wonderful addition.

Liverpool bosses know that selling the 22-year-old is the right thing despite his clear talent, for he will not receive the playing time he wishes for at Anfield, behind Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah in the pecking order – with a defensive signing rumoured to be on the cards before the month's up.

Arne Slot's arrival at the helm this summer has deepened a strong Dutch undercurrent to the Reds' senior squad, but Van den Berg will not form a part of it as he moves away to kickstart his promising career.

Sepp van den berg in action for Liverpool in the Premier League.

Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo are among the brightest of Liverpool's stars, but Ryan Gravenberch is also starting to prove that he can be an invaluable centrepiece.

Why Liverpool signed Ryan Gravenberch

Last summer, Liverpool finished a busy summer of spending by signing Gravenberch in a £34m move, ending his dreary spell with Bayern Munich.

The multi-talented midfielder had emerged as one of Europe's brightest talents with Ajax but failed to impress in Germany, limited to just three Bundesliga starts throughout the 2022/23 campaign – with two of those starting berths arriving in May.

Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

Gravenberch was plucked by Klopp last summer after a shrewd deal had been conducted for Wataru Endo, solving (temporarily) the quandary at the base of the midfield. The Dutchman's more dynamic and fluid style suggested that he could house himself across any number of roles in the engine room.

It didn't look like it last year but Gravenberch might find himself operating in the deep-lying role this season after Liverpool failed to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, indeed placed at No. 6 during his side's win over Ipswich Town last weekend and in line for another shot at the position when the Bees are welcomed to Anfield.

He was cultured in possession and combative off the ball, with the notion of a prosperous career as Liverpool's anchorman taking root, having also been awarded an 8/10 match rating by the Liverpool Echo's Ian Doyle.

It's early days but Gravenberch took a big stride in his development last week; now he must sustain it. He only started 12 times in the Premier League under Klopp's wing and ebbed and flowed from form.

Could he now be shaping into one of Liverpool's most important and profitable players?

Gravenberch's Liverpool future

Gravenberch's performance at the base of the centre says much about his talent as a multi-functioning type of player, having typically enjoyed the more expansive stretches of the forward end of the field.

A sweeping range of passing allows the 6 foot 3 star to dictate from deep, and he might just be exactly what Slot is looking for – a fact that could see his market value rise and then some over the coming months.

He's got the progressive technical acumen and intense approach to his play that could see him continue to go from strength to strength over the coming years, ranking among the top 10% central midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 19% for progressive passes and the top 6% for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref.

His countryman, Van den Berg, might have potential but Gravenberch wears the trappings of an elite-level player, lacking composure and conditioning somewhat but well placed to proceed to the next level.

Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

Football Transfers' player valuation model currently records the "Rolls-Royce" – as he has been called by journalist Declan Carr – to have actually dropped in value marginally since signing one year ago, with the Netherlands international priced at €38m (roughly £32m), but this is due to his aforementioned struggles last term.

The fact it still places him above Van den Berg makes a telling comment on his projected rise over the coming years, with his display at Portman Road demonstrating instant improvements under his new boss.

Indeed, Gravenberch was branded a "passenger out of possession" during Liverpool's Premier League loss against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last season, though he has atoned for this deficiency by proving his free-moving athleticism last weekend.

Therefore, Gravenberch's slight market depreciation makes sense when considering his middling maiden year on Merseyside, enjoying flashes of brilliance but failing to produce the type of complete displays regularly that would have earned him a more prominent role under Klopp.

However, all things considered, he's one of the most exciting young midfielders in Europe with a lofty ceiling indeed. Arne Slot might just have hit the jackpot with this one, already tuned to the possibility of Gravenberch adopting a deeper-placed role in midfield and perhaps solving his biggest problem.

Once cost £48m: Sunderland missed out on "world-class" Bellingham partner

Sunderland fans might have anticipated an up-and-down start to this Championship season, as the Black Cats group grew accustomed to the fresh managerial methods of Regis Le Bris.

However, it's been all smooth sailing at the Stadium of Light so far, with four wins from four impressively picked up in the league, as the Wearside outfit convincingly beat Portsmouth 3-1 last time out.

Jobe Bellingham has impressed in flashes so far during what is still the infancy of the campaign, with Le Bris well aware that the promising youngster will be key to his side keeping their electric winning form up.

Bellingham's performances this season

Assisting Jack Clarke's final-ever goal for the Black Cats on the opening day away at Cardiff City, Bellingham hasn't picked up any more goal contributions yet, apart from playing his part in that last-minute strike versus the Bluebirds being powered home by the now Ipswich Town winger.

It's not as if he's taken a back-seat, however, when it comes to trying to leave his mark on contests though, with a mightily impressive 7.8 duels won on average per game this season, as Le Bris goes about toughening up the 18-year-old starlet.

The new French Black Cats boss will want to see Bellingham attempt more efforts in games moving forward though, away from his battling nature shining through, having netted seven league goals last season for his Wearside employers.

So far this campaign, the likes of Eliezer Mayenda and Romaine Mundle have been taking up more of the spotlight when it comes to firing home key strikes, whilst Bellingham grows into being more of an all-rounder centrally.

Still, he will hope he has more strikes like the one above up his sleeve across the course of the full Championship campaign, with the likes of Dan Neil and Chris Rigg also capable of striking fear into defences when venturing forward as his midfield teammates.

There was even a likelihood, at one stage, that Bellingham could have been joined by a former Champions League winner in the middle of the park as out-there options were assessed in the transfer window, but this spectacular move never get off the ground.

Naby Keita in action for Liverpool.

Naby Keita's failed move to Sunderland

As per football journalist Ed Aarons, Le Bris' men couldn't agree terms with forgotten ex-Liverpool man Naby Keita towards the end of the window, with a move to Istanbul Basaksehir now very much in the works.

Keita could well have reignited his playing days in England with the Black Cats, with the move seen as a coup if it did actually come to fruition, regardless of his time with the Reds petering out.

Never really becoming a key part of the jigsaw at Anfield, with recurring injury problems constantly stopping him in his tracks, Keita – who once cost the Reds a whopping £48m – did shine at points with seven goals and five assists tallied up from 87 Premier League clashes.

Capable of playing in a holding role, whilst also even prepared to line up down the left wing, the Guinea international's versatility would have also been useful to the Championship promotion hopefuls as the season dragged on.

Liverpool great Virgil Van Dijk even described the former Reds number eight as being "world class" during the early stages of his career at Anfield, and he could well have been a great partner for Bellingham in the centre of the park on Wearside, as another energetic and skilful midfielder with an eye for goal.

Unfortunately, no such audacious move happened, as the one-time Premier League winner now relocates to Turkey.

Le Bris won't be too disheartened by this development, as he now attempts to drill his ideas even more into the confident camp he has at his disposal, with a lengthy international break now in full swing.

Neville said Arsenal star was "terrible" last season, now he’s undroppable

As a club, Arsenal haven’t always had the best of records when it comes to the transfer market.

The North Londoners have spent their fair share of money on players who were never worth their initial price tags, like Nicolas Pepe, simply not good enough, like Shkrodan Mustafi, and while he was a loan signing, they also brought in a player with a broken back in Kim Kallstrom.

However, in the last few years, under the leadership of Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar, the Gunners have become shrewd operators in the market and, as a whole, have seen their signings work out.

For example, one of their additions last season, who received plenty of criticism early on, has since become one of the most essential starters in the team.

David Raya's first season

Yes, the player in question is Spanish goalkeeper David Raya, who was a surprise loan signing last summer, and we say surprise as going into that window, there was minimal discussion about Arsenal needing a new number one to replace fan favourite Aaron Ramsdale between the sticks.

In fact, many in the fanbase and media believed it was an utterly unnecessary addition to the team at the time, so both Arteta and the former Brentford ace came in for plenty of criticism and scrutiny. For example, former Manchester City and Newcastle United keeper Shay Given claimed that it looked like the manager was “signing a problem” at the time.

It was a mixed start to life in the team for the Barcelona-born shot-stopper as well, as even though he made a stunning save against Spurs in just his third appearance, he didn’t look entirely comfortable early on in the season and made some relatively high-profile and costly errors in the games away to Chelsea and Newcastle United.

In fact, despite finding his feet in the second half of the campaign, former professional and pundit Gary Neville found another way to criticise the 29-year-old, as he described his kicking in the 0-0 draw away to City as “terrible”, which, given the final result, felt quite nitpicky.

However, despite the outside noise and the occasional errors, Arteta could see what Raya brought to the team and stood by him, and after the start of this season, it just looks like another thing he’s got right.

Raya this season

Unsurprisingly, Raya has started all four of Arsenal’s games this season, and to say he’s been sensational would be downplaying it.

For example, he made a fantastic reaction save to keep the Gunners in the lead against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the club’s opening match.

The 29-year-old then took things a step further and kept this team in the game against Aston Villa by pulling off the save of the month to deny Ollie Watkins what looked to be a guaranteed goal.

He made five saves and won 100% of his duels against the Seagulls. Then, against Spurs on Sunday, he remained alert to the danger throughout the 95 minutes of action, and when he was called upon, he made several brilliant stops, and as fans have now become accustomed to, was a monster in the air.

Overall, the “outstanding” international, as data analyst Ben Mattinson has dubbed him, has firmly established himself as one of the most important players in the Arsenal squad and has become utterly undroppable.

The 41-year old adds more experience and firepower to a Patriots side that had already secured trades for Dwayne Bravo and Sherfane Rutherford from Trinbago Knight Riders and Guyana Amazon Warriors respectively.Gayle was supposed to turn out for the St Lucia Zouks in CPL 2020 after an acrimonious fallout with the Jamaica Tallawahs, but he eventually opted out of last season for personal reasons.Notably, Gayle had captained the Patriots to their first final in 2017, when they lost to the Knight Riders at the Brian Lara Stadium.Related
