Even without Shakib, Bangladesh sense golden chance against New Zealand

It has been six years since the last time the Black Caps played an ODI without both Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson

Shakib Al Hasan, who is on paternity leave, will be a big loss for Bangladesh•BCB

Big PictureBangladesh believe that this ODI series is their best opportunity to finally win in New Zealand. The first game in Dunedin in particular, when New Zealand are without two of their most experienced batsmen and captain, is going to be a golden chance for the visitors, who have also claimed that the preparation period this time in New Zealand has been their most fruitful. But they are also without Shakib Al Hasan, and that is a big equalising factor in this series. New Zealand don’t have Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor. It is certainly a major void but the likes of Tom Latham, the stand-in captain, and openers Martin Guptill and Henry Nicholls will look to make up with their own considerable international experience. But for Bangladesh, not having Shakib is going to be a serious loss.As much as he will be missed as a middle-order batsman, Shakib is by far their best bowler in away conditions, particularly in New Zealand.Bangladesh do have recent form on their side and this is their favourite format of the game. They defeated West Indies 3-0 at home recently, with many of their experienced batsmen being among the runs. Still, losing to West Indies in the Test series that followed has been a cause for concernNew Zealand, meanwhile, last played an ODI series in March last year when their Australia tour was cut short by the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic. They have only played four ODIs since the 2019 World Cup.So the series may boil down to how the two sides use their experience. And how Bangladesh tackle a rampant New Zealand pace attack that includes the in-form Trent Boult and Kyle Jamieson. They will rely a lot on the big three in Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah and require Liton Das, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mustafizur Rahman to step up and be the match-winners they have been in the past. What could also make the difference is whether an improved Bangladesh’s pace attack can take advantage of the slight drop in experience in the New Zealand top- and middle-order.Form guide(last five completed matches)New Zealand LWWWL

In the spotlightNew Zealand are all set to hand an ODI debut to Devon Conway, who broke into the T20I side late last year, and already has three fifties in the format. His unbeaten 99 against Australia last month was a breakthrough moment. Conway is likely to bat at No 3, with many in New Zealand cricket excited about this 29-year old coming good.Devon Conway has made strong strides into international cricket•AFP

Mushfiqur Rahim will be the fulcrum of Bangladesh’s middle-order, particularly in the absence of Shakib. He will keep wicket too, and the dual responsibility has often brought the best in him. Rahim will be expected to take the side deep into the game, and unleash from his big back-lift in the slog overs.Team newsNew Zealand will be making at least five changes to the side that played their last ODI in Australia in March last year. Williamson (elbow), Taylor (hamstring), Colin de Grandhomme (ankle) and Lockie Ferguson (back) are out with injuries while Ish Sodhi, despite his Player-of-the-Series winning performance against Australia in the T20Is recently, too hasn’t been considered. Conway, Will Young and Daryl Mitchell are likely to make their ODI debuts.New Zealand (probable) 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Henry Nicholls, 3 Devon Conway, 4 Tom Latham (capt & wk), 5 Will Young, 6 James Neesham, 7 Daryl Mitchell, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Kyle Jamieson, 11 Trent BoultUntil Mossaddek Hossain is declared fit for the first ODI, Bangladesh will have to wait to finalise their playing XI. Among the pace bowlers, the team management may take a chance on young Hasan Mahmud early in the series.Bangladesh (probable) 1 Tamim Iqbal (capt), 2 Liton Das, 3 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 4 Mosaddek Hossain/Mohammad Mithun, 5 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Soumya Sarkar, 8 Mohammad Saifuddin, 9 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Hasan Mahmud/Taskin AhmedPitch and conditionsThe side batting first has averaged 261 have won half of the ODIs at the University Oval in Dunedin. With short boundaries, it is likely to be a run-fest although there’s a chance of morning cloud cover and evening drizzle.Stats and trivia It has been six years since the last time New Zealand played an ODI without both Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson. In the last ODI held at this ground, Tim Southee took the most expensive six-wicket haul after Mustafizur became the second Bangladesh bowler to concede more than 90 runs in an ODI.Quotes”We have a solid fast bowling attack this time. We have a few young players who I am excited to see. They have been doing exceptionally well in the practice games. Hopefully we will have a good start tomorrow.”

“The pride is massive. It is an honour to be able to captain New Zealand. It is something that you dream of doing, and to be given the opportunity again is really nice. Hopefully we can start the series well.”

Shock move: Everton target Gnonto upgrade who’s the "Mini Vinicius"

With the Premier League season right around the corner, it allows Everton the chance to improve on their 2023/24 campaign and attempt to push themselves further up the table. Last term, the Toffees managed to stay relatively far away from the relegation scrap, after staying up by the skin of their teeth in the previous two seasons.

Indeed, Sean Dyche’s side finished 15th, on 40 points, a comfortable 16 points clear of 18th place Luton Town. This impressive finish came despite being deducted eight points, in splits of six and two points for two separate breaches of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin in action for Everton in the Premier League.

Had the Toffees not had their eight-point deduction last term, they could have ended up around 12th in the top flight. This is no doubt where they will be hoping to finish in 2024/25, as they look to climb the table and put themselves back into European contention in the long term.

After an active summer so far in the transfer market, Everton have strengthened their squad in some key areas and put themselves in a good position going into the new season. They have recently been linked with another exciting player who could further enhance the quality of their side.

Everton target La Liga winger

The player in question here is UD Almeria and Belgium winger Largie Ramazani. The 23-year-old came through the academy system at Manchester United but left after just one fleeting appearance for the first team. He has now been linked with a move back to the Premier League.

According to a report from Football Insider, Everton are ‘are plotting a shock move’ to sign the versatile forward before the transfer deadline in just under three weeks time. The Toffees have been ‘alerted by his availability’ this summer, with just one year left on his deal and a relegation for Almeria back to the second tier of Spanish football.

UD Almeria forward Largie Ramazani.

Everton are interested in adding depth up front this summer, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s future currently up in the air. Ramazani’s low cost could offer them an alternative to long-term target Leeds United’s Wilfried Gnonto, who would cost the Toffees £25m this summer as per Football Insider.

The Belgian’s price has not yet been confirmed, but he is valued at just £4m by Football Transfers. That seems like a realistic price given Almeria’s relegation and the attacker’s contractual situation ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Why Ramazani would be a good signing

The 23-year-old Belgian would add versatility and attacking output for a cheap price to the Toffees squad. Last campaign, he scored three goals and registered five assists in 29 appearances in La Liga. Given the fact Almeria were so poor, finishing 19th in the table, it was a good return by the youngster.

Ramzani’s ability to play right across the front three certainly makes this deal a more attractive prospect for Everton to do. It is safe to assume they are looking to add such a player to their squad, considering their interest in Gnonto, another versatile attacking player.

Last campaign, Gnonto’s return was also fairly impressive in the Championship, although he did struggle to cement a place in the starting XI under Daniel Farke. He scored eight times and grabbed two assists in 36 games in the second division of English football, playing in a multitude of positions along the way.

In terms of Ramazani’s stats on FBref compared to the Italian, they stack up fairly well. The Belgian’s ball-carrying numbers come close to Gnonto, averaging 2.37 carries into the final third and 1.56 carries into the penalty box per 90 minutes. In comparison, Gnonto averages 2.23 final third carries and 1.79 carries into the penalty box.

However, the Almeria winger’s creative influence in the final third is slightly better than the former Inter youngster’s when looking at the stats. He averaged 1.5 key passes and 0.29 assists per 90, compared to just 1.2 key passes and 0.11 assists each game for the Italian.

Largie Ramazani

With Everton in the market for a versatile attacker who can play across the front three, provide a goal threat and offer a good outlet in transition, Ramazani could be the dream option. He was described as a “mini-Vinicius” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, showing just how dangerous he can be with the ball at his feet.

For a cheap price that could be as low as £4m, the former Manchester United academy player could be the perfect option for Everton this summer as they look to further strengthen up front.

Forget Phillips: Everton could land their own Caicedo in £17m sensation

The Toffees could face competition from Manchester United for his signature.

Late move: West Ham keen on "exemplary" star who’d send Zouma packing

West Ham United have had an extremely busy summer transfer window, already acquiring nine signings for new boss, Julen Lopetegui, as he targets a return to European football for the Hammers.

The club is currently trying to manage outgoings, in order to add a final few additions to the squad before the window slams shut, one of those being Kurt Zouma, who has been subject to interest from clubs abroad.

West Ham captain Kurt Zouma.

Zouma made 39 appearances for West Ham in all competitions last season, scoring three goals, and contributing to four clean sheets in his 3,379 minutes played.

West Ham transfer news

According to reports relayed by The Guardian, West Ham are reportedly interested in signing Galatasaray defender, Victor Nelsson. It is believed a deal could be done for a fee in the region of £12m, but the Hammers are currently reliant on sales before making a move.

Other interested clubs include Spanish side Sevilla, French side Lille and Italian side Bologna.

Nelsson made 46 appearances for Galatasaray in all competitions last season, scoring two goals, and contributing to 20 clean sheets in his 3,448 minutes played.

Current West Ham centre back options compared

Once described as "exemplary" by Jacek Kulig, the Danish defender has been highly rated for some time now, attracting interest from top European clubs.

The only current senior right-footed centre-back options at West Ham are Zouma (who could be on his way out) and new signing Jean-Claire Todibo. Therefore, if Zouma was to leave, West Ham would like to address the depth in this area, with someone more comfortable on the ball.

Stats taken from FBref

From these metrics, you can see how Todibo is a better-suited centre back for Lopetegui's system, where he will be required to play out from the back. His 84.3 passes attempted per 90 compared to Zouma's 36.3, and his 5.08 progressive passes per 90, compared to Zouma's 1.55 show their stark contrast in passing ability.

Where Zouma does excel, is in aerial duels, winning 1.89 per 90, and physically imposing himself with his 6 foot 3, powerful frame. However, the difference between the two in the air isn't a big enough reason to prefer Zouma, when you compare the other factors needed for a Lopetegui defender.

Nice centre-back Jean-Claire Todibo.

This is where Nelsson comes in, who averaged 4 aerials won per 90, more than double the amount of Zouma, and 51.8 attempted passes per 90, whilst playing in the Süper Lig last season.

Whilst only being 6 foot 1, compared to the 6 foot 3 frames of Zouma and Todibo, the Danish defender still puts his stamp on the game physically, showing his ability to win aerial duels. But he also brings a more comfortable option on the ball than Zouma, which would be better suited to Lopetegui's system.

West Ham's ability to get rid of players surplus to requirements, and replace them with younger, more suitable profiles for their new brand of football, could be a season-defining moment for them, and make it a whole lot easier for Lopetegui to implement his ideas faster.

Dom Sibley, Hanuma Vihari reminded of humbling powers of sport with Warwickshire

Sibley injures finger, Vihari struggles on first day as Notts make inroads via Broad and Chappell

George Dobell15-Apr-2021

Dom Sibley was sent for X-rays after injuring his finger fielding for Warwickshire•Getty Images

Dom Sibley and Hanuma Vihari were reminded of the humbling powers of sport on the first day of the Championship match between Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire.A day that started with Sibley named as a Wisden cricketer of the year and Vihari retain his India central contract finished with the former nursing an injured finger and the latter contemplating a duck on debut for his new team.Sibley, the England opener, sustained the injury when failing to cling on to a regulation chance at slip offered by Steven Mullaney, on 26, off the bowling of Tim Bresnan. He left the field for treatment shortly afterwards and subsequently went for an X-ray.With seven weeks to go before the first Test of the summer, Sibley should have time to recover even if the results of the scan show a break. But having endured a tough series in India – he averaged 16.75 across the four Tests – he could have done with time at the crease ahead of the series against New Zealand. He is the second member of England’s first-choice Test XI to sustain a finger injury within the week after Ben Stokes’ IPL was ended by a broken finger.Sibley’s absence obliged Warwickshire to reorganise their batting line-up. That meant Rob Yates was promoted to open and Vihari moved up to No. 3. In normal circumstances, that would be fine. But Yates, making a fearsome hash of an attempted cut, fell first ball and Vihari only emerged from quarantine on Wednesday. That meant he had time for one net session before embarking on his first innings since the Sydney Test in January. It was hardly ideal preparation for facing Stuart Broad in his own back yard. While Vihari resisted stoutly for 40 minutes, he was eventually forced to play at one on off stump which may have bounced a little more than he expected and took the edge. Haseeb Hameed held on to a low catch at slip. For all the familiar names on show in this game – and there are eight Test players involved – it was the relatively unknown Liam Patterson-White who produced the key performance.Nottinghamshire don’t have the best reputation for the development of young players. While that’s not entirely fair – they have the same number of home-grown players (three) in this match as Warwickshire – it is true they have leaned pretty heavily on the surrounding counties over the years. In this game, for example, they have included five players who developed at either Leicestershire (Stuart Broad and Zak Chappell), Worcestershire (Joe Clarke), Northants (Ben Duckett) and Derbyshire (Ben Slater). Jake Libby, meanwhile, has flourished at New Road having left Trent Bridge. But they are determined to provide more opportunities for their current crop of youngsters. And, having declined the opportunity to sign a second overseas player, they preferred Patterson-White to Samit Patel, among others, as their spin-bowling allrounder. He went a long way to justifying the choice, too. Nottinghamshire were 119 for 6 when he came to the wicket but, in partnership with Tom Moores, Broad and Chappell, he helped his side to two batting bonus points and a competitive first-innings score. In withstanding a decent examination of pace from Olly Stone, who got through 20 overs and at times looked hostile, he showed decent temperament and technique and was eventually left stranded on an unbeaten 73. Nobody else managed more than 31.Patterson-White’s success is not a complete surprise. He scored heavily at second XI and academy level and played for England U-19s as an allrounder. Having broken into the Nottinghamshire team in 2019 – he took a five-for on debut and soon followed it with a maiden half-century – and been sent to winter under the tutelage of Jeetan Patel in New Zealand, it was some surprise when he missed out in the shortened season of 2020.While he has yet to play a first team limited-overs game – his opportunities have been limited by the presence of Patel, Imad Wasim and Matt Carter at various times – Nottinghamshire expect him to feature regularly in the first-class side and hope a Lions tour could be a possibility next winter. His ninth-wicket stand with Chappell was worth 63. While Chappell was happy to play a supporting role, he got in line, played straight and demonstrated the patience and hunger that some of his top-order colleagues would do well to emulate. Earlier Ben Slater had been drawn into pushing at a wide one, Hameed drove a full toss to cover and Clarke edged an attempted cut. Duckett and Moores were both dismissed by fine deliveries which nipped back, while Lyndon James over committed himself when backing up and was run out by an outstanding direct hit from cover by Will Rhodes.Poor Vihari’s bowling was little better than his batting. He was only entrusted with one over after his second ball, the longest of long-hops, was pulled for six by Moores. The boundary on one side of the pitch is unusually small but that was a stroke that would have carried beyond the boundary of any ground. A similar delivery was thumped for four later in the over. He did, at least, redeem himself a little in the field by clinging on to a brilliant one-handed catch to dismiss Mullaney at midwicket.Hanuma Vihari celebrates after catching Steven Mullaney•Getty Images

Nottinghamshire were grateful for Broad’s enthusiasm to play. They were without Jake Ball and Brett Hutton due to injury and Luke Fletcher due to illness so to hear that Broad was keen to play a week earlier than originally envisaged by the England management was something of a bonus.Their new overseas player, Dane Paterson, didn’t enjoy the most impressive of starts, either. Having succumbed to a second-ball duck, his first delivery was a no-ball that was hit for four. Having conceded six before bowling a ball he could probably empathise with Vihari. The only way is up for both of them.
