Corinthians 0 x 2 Palmeiras – Semifinal Paulistão-2021
Palmeiras 1 x 1 Corinthians – Brasileirão-2021

Imagine him & Kilman: West Ham leading the race to sign £25m talent

West Ham United supporters felt a pang of concern after David Moyes departed the club at the end of the 2023/24 campaign. It was the right decision, but still, the Scot had led the club to their brightest period in modern history, and the road ahead looked fraught with the murky unknown.

Julen Lopetegui's subsequent appointment failed to allay such trepidation, with supporters viewing the deal as pragmatic, but he has since proved himself bold and committed to building a competitive squad, combining with technical director Tim Steidten in the transfer market to make some exciting signings.

Wolves captain Max Kilman

A new centre-forward is yet to come, but one of the most important issues has been mitigated in central defence, with Max Kilman signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £40m.

West Ham transfer news

Lopetegui wants more in defence. According to Caught Offside, West Ham are leading the race to sign Ajax centre-half Josip Sutalo, who has also been scouted by Brighton & Hove Albion and Fulham in the Premier League.

Josip Sutalo for Croatia

Valued at €30m (£25m) by the struggling Dutch giants, the Croatian is expected to be at the centre of official bids, albeit below Ajax's expectation.

West Ham are in the most commanding position after signing Edson Alvarez and Mohammed Kudus from the Eredivisie side last year, and could now use past dealings to their advantage.

Why West Ham want Josip Sutalo

West Ham have considered selling central defensive mainstays Nayef Aguerd and Kurt Zouma this summer, the latter of whom is the club's captain.

Kurt Zouma for West Ham

Sutalo, 24, completed 39 appearances for Ajax last term and played every minute of Croatia's disappointing Euro 2024 campaign, with the Luka Modric-captained nation failing to make it past the group phase, collecting two points.

It might have been a tough season for club and country as far as the 6 foot 3 titan is concerned, but there's no question that he has maintained a formidable level throughout, combining defensive steel with bouncing energy and crisp passing.

Progressive and proficient across a wide range of roles, Sutalo would be a brilliant addition to a new-look West Ham defence, partnering with the left-sided Kilman to create a dynamic sheen.

Kilman, aged 27, is not exactly the conventional defender either, prone to surging forwards and seeking out passages himself, with the clip below highlighting the kind of shuttling success he can find with the ball at his feet.

The Wolves defender, who plied his trade under Lopetegui during the 2022/23 season, averaged 4.7 recoveries and clearances per game in the Premier League last term and won 71% of his aerial battles, suggesting that the Irons could find a solid partnership capable of performing well whatever the conditions.

One year ago, talent scout Jacek Kulig described Sutalo as "one of the most underrated U-23 CBs in Europe", speaking highly of his potential.

Max Kilman for Wolves

He might have endured a testing 12 months but the Croatia star has proved himself sturdy despite the woes of the collective, and would be a credit to West Ham as they step into a new era.

Hosts New Zealand to kick off 2022 Women's ODI World Cup on March 4

Eight of the best teams will battle from March 4 to April 3 to decide the champion

Hosts New Zealand will kick off the 2022 Women’s ODI World Cup on March 4 against one of the qualifying sides in Tauranga, as eight of the best teams in women’s cricket will battle over 31 matches in 31 days across six cities.Defending champions England will start their campaign with a high-profile meeting against Australia on March 5 in Hamilton. And 2017 runners-up India will hope to go one better as they, too, start off by facing the qualifying side on March 6.While New Zealand, Australia, England, South Africa and India have qualified, three qualifying sides will come from a tournament to take place in Sri Lanka between June 26 and July 10, 2021. As to the format of the World Cup itself, all eight teams will play against each other once and the top four will go through to the semi-finals.Wellington will host the first semi-final on March 30 and Christchurch will host the second semi-final and the final on March 31 and April 3. All three games will have a reserve day. Auckland and Dunedin are the remaining two of the six venues which were retained from the original schedule of 2021.Auckland will also host the massive double-header weekend with India taking on Australia on March 19, and New Zealand facing England the following day. An ICC release confirmed all matches will be broadcast live to a “huge global audience”.The Hagley Oval has only recently been upgraded with floodlights and New Zealand veteran Amy Satterthwaite is eager to see how her home ground will look come game time.”To play in a World Cup at our own stomping ground here in Christchurch, under lights, would be a real career highlight,” she said. “It was hard to watch the T20 Women’s Cricket World Cup from the sidelines back in March (after giving birth in January) so seeing the match schedule all locked in for the ODI World Cup here in 2022 gives both myself and the rest of the team a target to strive for as we prepare over the next 16 months.”In addition to being called champions, the team that wins it all will walk away with a prize money of NZD 5.5 million (US $3.9 million approx.). India have come close to clinching those honours and Mithali Raj is keen to go again.”India has been doing very well at ICC tournaments in the past three or four years, whether you talk about the (ODI) World Cup or the recently concluded T20 World Cup,” she said. “And if we manage to win the tournament in 2022, it will be a massive inspiration for the next generation of girls, as the 50-over format, is considered the pinnacle for any cricketer.”The World Cup had to be postponed from its original date in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and will be one of two bumper women’s cricket events in 2022 alongside the Commonwealth Games in England.2022 Women’s ODI World Cup scheduleNew Zealand vs Qualifier, March 4, Tauranga

'My job is to take a back seat and help Kohli' – Rahane happy to return to vice-captaincy role

He says the bubble life hasn’t taken a toll on India’s players

Varun Shetty03-Feb-20213:42

Rahane explains his responsibilities as India vice-captain

India vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane is pleased at Virat Kohli’s return to the team and is gearing for his normal and “easy” role as deputy, one he says he enjoys best by being in the back seat.Rahane took over as stand-in captain, when Kohli left on paternity leave after the first Test of the Australia series, in Adelaide, and led India to a historic series victory that involved two Test wins and a draw. Rahane had only led India on two occasions before the Australia tour, but remains unbeaten as a Test captain.”See, my job is to take a back seat and help Virat,” Rahane said during a virtual media conference on Wednesday. “There are too many things on a captain’s mind, so as a vice-captain you have to visualise a situation, think about what can happen in the game, and then if captain asks you for suggestions then you should be ready. So my job is really easy. I take a back seat. Whenever required I go and tell him…or whenever he asks me about certain things, I’ll just go and tell him. That helps us a lot. For me, personally, I generally take a back seat when I’m vice-captain.”Related

How Rahane and his lieutenants masterminded India's win in Australia

Rahane: 'Virat was and will always be the captain of the Test team'

Kuldeep: 'I have seen failure. I feel I understand things better now'

Even so, Rahane’s likely to have had a slight responsibility as the leader of the team during the Australia series win: that of grounding the team and helping them move on to focussing on the upcoming home series against England.”Australia was really special for us. We did enjoy our victory, especially that night in Brisbane and also when we came back home. But we are in the present now,” Rahane said. “What we learnt from Australia was, after losing a match in Adelaide, how we came back. So it’s all about staying in the moment. We respect the England team as well. We’re not going to take them lightly. For us, what’s important is playing a good brand of cricket, what we’ve been playing since the last two-three years. And play as a team and play as a unit. We’re not taking anything for granted. It’s all about taking one match at a time.”Ajinkya Rahane: “Whenever required I go and tell him (Virat Kohli)…or whenever he asks me about certain things, I’ll just go and tell him”•BCCI

The cancellation of the series between Australia and South Africa this month has meant that New Zealand have become the first team to qualify for the World Test Championship final, with India being strong favourites to face them in the final at Lord’s later this year. Rahane said New Zealand were deserving of the spot but said that the Indian team is only looking as far as this week’s game in Chennai, reiterating that complacency was not an issue.”We know every series, every game is really important, especially in the Test championship. What happened in Australia was really special but that is the past. We’re thinking of this series, this game particularly, and taking it one game at a time,” he said. “I don’t think we have to think too much about complacency. We know what’s our strength. We’re still respecting the England team, they did really well in Sri Lanka. So basically we have to play good cricket, back our strengths and play as a team here.”Rahane was tight-lipped about team combinations and pitch conditions, saying we’d have to “wait and see” about both, while hinting that Hardik Pandya was working hard as “a batsman and a bowler” in the nets. The return of Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer to the English team – both of whom were former team-mates of his at Rajasthan Royals – would not, he said, give England too much of an advantage.”We play IPL with them but Tests and IPL are completely different,” Rahane said. “We know how their bowlers come here and bowl, but like I said, lengths are completely different in the formats. It’s not like we tell them everything [about strategy]. That’s very important. IPL and Tests are completely different.Several of India’s players have been in a bubble since late August, just before the IPL began, and will likely have little time outside of bubbles any time soon, with the IPL shaping to be held in its regular March-April window. But, at the moment, Rahane said, there has been no mental faitgue.”We are not mentally tired at all,” he said. “We are really tough mentally. We are a unit, a family. We are enjoying each other’s company here. We are spending time in the team room. Our families are here which is really important. So we are not at all tired”

Better than Gnonto: Everton in advanced talks for "world-class" ace

Wilfried Gnonto is a talent who has constantly been linked with Everton ever since Leeds United suffered relegation back to the Championship back in 2022/23.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a successful debut Premier League campaign for the Yorkshire outfit, registering four goals and four assists, looking to be an astute pick-up for the Whites.

After they failed to secure promotion back to England’s top flight, the rumours once again emerged, with the Italian available for a fee in the region of £25m this summer.

Sean Dyche’s side have looked the most likely to secure a deal for his services, but in recent days, the Toffees have turned their attention to another transfer target.

His side have already signed Tim Iroegbunam, Jack Harrison and Iliman Ndiaye, but the trio could be joined by another star, with a deal seemingly edging ever closer to completion.

Everton in advanced talks to sign 24-year-old star

According to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Everton have reached an agreement with Napoli over the loan signing of midfielder Jesper Lindstrom until the end of the 2024/25 season.

jesper-lindstrom

Di Marzio also confirmed that the deal to sign the Danish star does include an option to buy at the end of the campaign, but both parties are currently waiting for Lindstrom to agree to move to Goodison Park.

He only joined Napoli from German side Eintracht Frankfurt last summer, for a fee in the region of £25m, but only made 29 appearances in all competitions and failed to register a single goal or assist, as Napoli finished tenth in Serie A.

Whilst he failed to produce any goal contributions last season, he did produce some useful stats which may intrigue the Toffees, many of which are better than fellow transfer target Gnonto.

Why Lindstrom would be better than Gnonto for Everton

Everton struggled massively for goals in the Premier League in 2023/24, scoring just 40 times in 38 matches – the second-lowest tally in the division, with only bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United scoring fewer.

Whilst Lindstrom failed to register any tangible contributions, he did provide some sensational figures that blew Gnonto out of the water and could potentially help end the Toffees’ poor goalscoring form in front of goal.

When comparing the duo on FBref, the Danish attacker featured in 13 games fewer, but managed to produce some excellent returns that the Italian simply couldn’t get anywhere near.

The “world-class” ace – as described by Bundesliga reporter Archie Rhind-Tutt – averaged 2.63 shots per 90, with Gnonto only able to post a tally of 2.55 despite featuring in a lower-quality division.

Lindstrom also achieved a 3% higher pass completion rate, whilst also completing more take-ons per 90 than the Italian forward.

Whilst he’s found life hard in Serie A, a move to Goodison Park could be beneficial for both parties in Everton’s hunt to secure a mid-table Premier League finish in 2024/25.

The Dane – who previously chalked up 28 goals and assists in 80 games for Frankfurt, where he also won the Europa League – would gain consistent first-team minutes, whilst the Toffees would be gaining an impressive talent who can further bolster their forward line.

It’s shrewd business by the club, finally showing signs of acting in a sensible manner within the transfer window, allowing them to avoid another PSR punishment in the near future.

Romano: Chelsea want £207k-p/w striker who’d be the finest since Drogba

Chelsea qualified for Europe last season, combatting the wretched nature of the previous campaign, but the forthcoming campaign in the Conference League is not where the Blues want to be.

With life under Enzo Maresca underway, Chelsea have shown ambition in the transfer market but have still yet to sign a centre-forward, one of the most pressing concerns after missing 73 big chances in the Premier League last term – Liverpool (79) are the only team to have missed more.

Chelsea lining up new striker

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update in the race for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who is pushing to leave the 2022/23 Serie A champions and is firmly on Chelsea's radar as they seek a new star at No. 9.

Chelsea are joined by Paris Saint-Germain in being the chief contenders for the Nigerian's signature, but with Antonio Conte's Napoli hoping to sign Romelu Lukaku, the Premier League side might hold the chips in the race.

Victor Osimhen is the gold standard

Say what you want about Todd Boehly, but you can't say that he's lacking in ambition. Chelsea have spent with a scattergun approach over the past few years, and while it's been polished, some of that lucrative enterprise would need to be harnessed if Osimhen is going to move to London.

Napoli star Victor Osimhen

There's no disguising the shambolic nature of Napoli's title defence last term, finishing tenth with 53 points. Osimhen played his part though, scoring 15 goals from 22 starts in the Italian top flight as he battled through injuries, unable to show the full scope of his skillset.

The year before, however, he was utterly breathtaking as I Partenopei won the Scudetto with imperious ease, posting 31 goals and five assists across 39 matches in all competitions.

With the least amount of league appearances on the above list of Europe's superlative shooters in 2022/23, Osimhen ranked among the top 1% of forwards in Serie A that year for goals scored per 90, as per FBref, with his rate of 0.91 goals per game something that would catapult Chelsea back to form.

He could even prove to be Stamford Bridge's finest striker since the halcyon days of Didier Drogba, who is widely regarded as one of the Premier League's finest attacking players, with 20,000 Blues fans voting the Ivory Coast legend as their best-ever player in 2012.

Admittedly, the competition is somewhat thin; Chelsea have been beset by something of a curse at No. 9 over the past decade, with the likes of Fernando Torres (£50m), Radamel Falcao, Alvaro Morata, Gonzalo Higuain, and Lukaku among the disappointing collection of high-profile strikers that have flattered to deceive.

Drogba endured no such problem, scoring 164 goals across 381 appearances and winning a wealth of silverware – including the Champions League and four Premier League trophies.

The £207k-per-week Osimhen, hailed for his "world-class" quality by none other than Jose Mourinho – architect of Drogba's success, by the way – could snap that curse and fire Chelsea back into the ascendancy. Boehly needs to get it done.

The dry run: 'Don't need to worry,' says Ajinkya Rahane as team backs its 'impact player'

Ajinkya Rahane: ‘I don’t need to worry about what happened in first Test’

Ajinkya Rahane is a man of few words. He keeps his assertions for on the field. On the eve of the second Test against England, though, he hit back at those questioning his batting, asking them to check his record. Rahane scored a resounding hundred in Melbourne, adjudged as the innings of the year by ESPNcricinfo, but either side of that knock have been 13 innings without reaching 50. More of a concern with Rahane is that his numbers are better away than at home, where he averages 37.75.”We are playing at home after two years,” Rahane pointed out. “We played last home series against South Africa. If you take that record out, you will find something over there. It is all about the team. It is not about any individual. My focus is completely on how I can contribute for my team. If you check out the last 10-15 Test matches about my individual performances, you will see some runs over there. I don’t need to worry about what is happening and what happened in the first Test match. It is all about what the team wants from me in this Test match. And then go and contribute. And I am pretty much confident about that.”Related

'My job is to take a back seat and help Kohli' – Rahane

Kohli: Don't jump the gun on India, or Rahane

The South Africa series that Rahane spoke about took place in October 2019. He scored a century and a fifty, averaging 72. In the series against Bangladesh that followed, he scored 86 and 51 in the two innings he got to play. In the most recent home Test, though, Rahane managed scores of 1 and 0.From being propped up as a full-time captaincy candidate to having his place questioned in the space of just one Test is some ride. Sanjay Manjrekar’s tweet summed it up: “My issue with Rahane the captain is Rahane the batsman. After that 100 in Melbourne his scores are – 27*, 22, 4, 37, 24, 1 and 0. After a 100, class players carry their form & carry the burden of players out of form.”However, Rahane enjoys full confidence from the full-time captain, Virat Kohli. “Ajinkya, I have said this many a times in the past as well, along with Pujara, he is our most important Test batsman and he will continue to be as we believe in his abilities and he is an impact player,” Kohli said after the first Test. “If you are talking about MCG Test, he stood up and scored a hundred when the team wanted it most. You can look at number of innings and what happens from thereon, the reality is we won the series in Australia.”Here it is just one innings, and today you can put that innings aside but in the first innings he wanted to score a boundary and it was a brilliant catch by Joe [Root] that got rid of him. If that goes for a boundary and he scores runs, then we are not having this conversation, so there are absolutely no issues and everyone is playing really well. We just need to be focused a lot more and understand that Test victories are earned in any condition whether you are playing at home or away from home. Nothing is given in Test cricket, and we need to work together as a team and put in a lot of pressure on the opposition.”If Rahane is to get the criticism off his back in Chennai in the coming week, he will have to do in conditions more difficult than in the first Test. He himself said the pitch would turn much more. “[The pitch] looks completely different, I am sure it will turn from day one,” Rahane said. “We will have to wait and see how it behaves in the first session and take it from there. We have to forget what happened in the first Test and focus on this. Play good cricket. And we know these conditions really well. We have to put our best forward tomorrow and play as a team.”In the Bangalore Test that India beat Australia in, from a similar 1-0 deficit back in 2016-17, Rahane led the turnaround in partnership with Pujara. In that innings, Rahane unsettled Nathan Lyon with the sweep, a shot that England employed to good effect against India. Rahane was asked if that is a shot India are looking at.”It depends on what they bowl,” Rahane said. “What lines and lengths they bowl. Accordingly we play those shots. England came up with their plans of playing sweeps and reverse sweeps. It is not necessary that we are going to play similar shots. It is about what they bowl and how we actually attack their lines and lengths and play our game.”
