Cricket Tasmania announces job losses due to pandemic cost-cutting

There have been 20 roles lost at the organisation which follow job cuts at other states

Cricket Tasmania has become the latest organisation to announce significant job losses in the wake of budget cuts stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic.Twenty roles have been lost and while some come from positions that were vacant there have also been redundancies. The states are expected to take a 25% hit to their grants from Cricket Australia as the governing body looks to slash costs amid their own financial issues. The South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) was the first to confirm job cuts and last week Cricket Victoria announced major changes with community cricket especially hard hit while the Melbourne Renegades WBBL coach, Tim Coyle, has lost his job.Although the 2019-2020 Australian season was only impacted at the very end, Tasmania lost an international match as it was due to host the final ODI between Australia and New Zealand at Blundstone Arena. They have also been hit by the suspension of the AFL and are preparing for the potential of the next Big Bash season to be played behind closed doors.”It’s a very difficult time for businesses around the world, and unfortunately we’re having to make some tough decisions to secure the future of Cricket Tasmania,” chief executive Dominic Baker said. “Our financial position coming into this period was relatively good, having significantly reduced our levels of debt over recent years, however the immediate and future impacts of coronavirus have led us to this unenviable situation.””With reductions in revenue from Cricket Australia; no events at the Blundstone Arena Function Centre; and cancellation of major events like the one-day international in March and this year’s AFL matches, it would be negligent of us to not mitigate the risks that this new landscape poses.””We are confident that the changes we have announced put us in a position that, when the time comes, we will see clubs all around the state back on the field, our own state teams continuing their campaigns and our staff back in schools and communities engaging the next generation of cricketers.”

Man Utd looking at "genius" new manager who Fernandes would love

Whether Erik ten Hag remains as Manchester United boss next season remains unclear after a disappointing second season in charge.

The Red Devils finished eighth in the Premier League with a goal difference of -1, their worst league record in over 30 years.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag

It could very well be that even an FA Cup victory over Manchester City this weekend won’t be enough to save the Dutchman, although a victory would enhance his chances.

With that in mind, there is a potential replacement for Ten Hag, and one who could truly get the very best out of Bruno Fernandes too.

Man Utd’s search for a new boss

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Man United could be set to move for Mauricio Pochettino if INEOS and Co decide to part ways with Ten Hag.

The Argentine shockingly left Chelsea on Tuesday after a mutual agreement, yet he could bounce back to management right away.

It seems that the relationship between the club and the manager was one of the main reasons for his departure, as he was reportedly “hugely popular among the players.”

United have previously been interested in making the former Tottenham Hotspur boss their manager, but what sort of impact would he have on the side if he were to join?

Pochettino’s potential impact on Bruno Fernandes

It’s fair to say that both Chelsea and United have underperformed this season on every front, but one thing that’s clear is that the Blues ended the campaign on a much stronger note.

Pochettino’s side finished in sixth place, three points above the Red Devils in eighth, with 15 points from their last five games helping them leapfrog the Manchester club.

As you can see by the table, Chelsea were a much more complete team this season than United, scoring far more often and playing a much more attacking style of play.

This is the type of football that the United faithful have missed this season: a possession-based approach that enables more control and dominance, which will massively benefit Fernandes in particular.

Bruno Fernandes for Manchester United.

The Portuguese magnifico is the catalyst for anything positive in an attacking sense for United, creating 14 more big chances than the second most in the squad, and with Pochettino proving to have the ability to take attacking players in particular to the next level, the attacking midfielder must be licking his lips at the prospect of playing under him.

Just take Cole Palmer’s performance this season as an example. The number 20 has been absolutely immense under the instruction of the Argentine, scoring 22 goals and providing 11 assists in 29 starts.

In all honesty, that’s a level of output that the United captain can certainly reach, having scored ten goals and registered eight assists this season in the league.

What Pochettino is best at is allowing his players to express themselves, particularly the creative outlets in his 4-2-3-1. Just think of the heights Dele Alli reached under Pochettino. Whether it be by giving midfielders more positional freedom in possession or enabling them to take risks on the ball, in that sense he is certainly the "genius" that journalist Alex Keble called him.

For the next few years, the Old Trafford rebuild has to be based around the number eight, as he’s the heartbeat of the team and by far United’s best player, as shown by the fact he ranks first in the squad for so many statistics, including key passes, goals, assists, and shots on target.

As displayed since his arrival, Fernandes is the definition of a player who could win a game on his own, an individual who can turn nothing into something, and Pochettino’s guidance will without doubt help him flourish even more than he already does.

Stuart Broad: England will sacrifice runs for second new-ball chance

Second Test set up for gripping finale as England throw caution to the wind for series hopes

Andrew Miller19-Jul-2020Stuart Broad says that England may be willing to set West Indies an achievable target on the final day of the second Test in exchange for the opportunity to get hold of a second new ball, after giving themselves an outside chance of forcing a series-salvaging victory at Emirates Old Trafford.Speaking at the close of the fourth day, in which his own new-ball burst of 3 for 1 in 14 balls was instrumental in bowling West Indies out for 287, Broad remained confident that the fifth-day wicket would offer England plenty of opportunities to take 10 wickets and square the series with Friday’s third Test to come, but only if they allow themselves enough time to turn the screw.ALSO READ: Broad’s new-ball burst leaves England chasing final-day winEngland certainly set out with intent in their own second innings, opening the batting with Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler in a bid to build quickly on their first-innings lead of 182. And while Buttler fell for a duck, and Zak Crawley followed soon afterwards for 11, Broad was not disheartened at England’s close-of-play total of 37 for 2, for it reinforced the impression that run-scoring is getting ever harder on this surface.”It’ll be a good day tomorrow, I think,” Broad told Sky Sports. “We need to set it up in the first 45 minutes to an hour tomorrow. The dream world [would be to] try and get two new balls because we’ve seen the new ball has behaved slightly differently on this pitch, and gives the bowlers a real chance. We’ve given ourselves a chance of winning this game which is a great position to be in.”With 98 overs available on the final day, and an overnight lead of 219, the danger for England is that an over-aggressive declaration would offer West Indies an achievable run-chase and a chance to sew up a 2-0 series win. But with their hopes of the Wisden Trophy depending on back-to-back wins, Broad was adamant that the benefits of the second new ball – available after 80 overs – would inform their decisions.”We’ve not had those sort of chats of where we want to be runs-wise,” he said, “but I think the second new ball is going to be quite important, even if it’s for four, five, six overs. Because if West Indies were seven-down with that second new ball, you’d feel like it would give you a real chance.”We saw today, with a bit of short-pitch bowling, you can you can stop the scoring quite quickly with big square boundaries and windy conditions, so I think we’d sacrifice a few runs for the chance to have that second ball for sure.”Another factor in England’s plans may be the propensity for the ball to go quite soft after 40 overs – even, as Broad agreed, for the spin of Dom Bess, who claimed the first wicket of the day in an incisive morning spell but was unable to replicate that threat later in the innings. And the fielders’ inability to use saliva on the ball may also be a factor in that lack of mid-innings threat.”Another day’s wear in that pitch today, with some sunshine and wind, might have dried out a bit more, which helped it deteriorate slightly today, so it might play that way tomorrow a bit,” Broad said.”These balls are proving hard to shine. We’re giving it to the bowlers to try and get some sweat into it, but obviously with no saliva I think the swing numbers would be way down compared to English summers gone by.”We decided we would just try to slam the ball into the pitch as hard as possible and try and wobble the seam a little bit, and we got some indifferent bounce. The balls haven’t swung up until about 12 overs old, when the lacquer starts to come off, but the hardness of the ball definitely bought some extra bounce. We saw that with [Shannon] Gabriel tonight, and a couple misbehaved to Crawley there, which gives us bowlers hope tomorrow.Stuart Broad celebrates the wicket of Shane Dowrich•Getty Images

“We need to create ten chances as a bowling unit, and we need to take our chances in the field.”Although Broad believes that the new ball will be the key to England’s hopes, he also feels that England have the creativity in their ranks to mix their tactics up in the middle overs, as Ben Stokes in particular showed in the first innings.”Going round the wicket, he bowled a really hostile spell on a slow pitch that created chances and got him a wicket,” Broad said. “Hopefully we’ll have enough runs on the board that we can get creative and if a few boundaries go against us, it doesn’t matter.”Bessy might play a key role tomorrow. Obviously the bowlers have had a decent workload today, we’ve got to back that up and do everything tonight recovery-wise. But I think our mindset is to create ten chances, and I think that pitch – particularly with the new ball – has got ten chances in it.ALSO READ: Stuart Broad’s timely rampage shows there’s fight in the old dog yet”I see [Kraigg] Brathwaite as a big wicket,” he added. “He’s solid, he takes up a lot of balls, he bats a lot of time. If we can get him in the first ten overs, I think that’ll give us a real boost.”Shamarh Brooks, the West Indies batsman, said he expected England to pull the plug on the third innings once the target was “260, 270″.”It all depends on the time that they spend to get those runs,” Brooks said. “We just need to make it as difficult for them as possible and make them spend as much time out there batting so they don’t get the opportunity to bowl too much at us.”Brooks said that he was “not at all” surprised to see Buttler and Stokes promoted up the order, and added that it was by no means a given that West Indies would drop anchor.”I’m not saying that chasing the runs is out of the question,” he said. “It all depends on how much they give us to chase. I still think the wicket is decent to bat on, I said before the new ball did a bit out of the ordinary this evening and it’s something to look at. Once you see out that new ball, then you can look at actually chasing the runs.”

Forest could finally replace Samba by signing "top-quality" Sels upgrade

Since promotion back to the Premier League, Nottingham Forest have had their fair share of goalkeepers who have tried to fill the void left by fan-favourite Brice Samba.

The Frenchman wanted a return to his homeland during the summer of 2022, joining RC Lens for an undisclosed fee, going on to feature in the Champions League and even receiving a call-up to the national side for the upcoming European Championships.

Numerous shot-stoppers arrived at the City Ground in 2022/23, with Dean Henderson and Keylor Navas proving to be key, experienced additions, but the Reds failed to secure either of the pair permanently after their respective loan moves.

Instead, the club opted to sign Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos last summer, spending a combined £20m on the duo, but both have failed to nail down the number one spot, starting a combined 22 matches between them last season.

Matz Sels was brought in as Nuno Espírito Santo’s new number one in January, with the Belgian proving to be a solid addition, but ultimately not an ideal long-term solution, with the former Newcastle man now aged 32.

However, the club have recently been linked with a move for one player who would be an upgrade on Sels, whilst finally filling the void left by Samba nearly two years ago.

Nottingham Forest make approach for talented goalkeeper

According to a report from Brazilian outlet UOL over the weekend, Nottingham Forest have made an approach to sign Gil Vicente’s 22-year-old shot-stopper Andrew Ventura this summer.

The Brazilian is also wanted by Dutch side Feyenoord ahead of the transfer window, with Ventura’s current side open to negotiating a deal for the former Botafoga ‘keeper.

He kept nine clean sheets in his 32 Liga Portugal outings last season, ranking in the top ten for most saves per 90 in the division.

Whilst the report doesn’t mention any potential price tag for any move, the youngster is currently valued at €2.5m (£2.1m) as per Transfermarkt, with the Reds needing to conduct shrewd business this summer to avoid any further PSR breach.

Why Ventura would be an upgrade on Matz Sels

When comparing the Brazilian’s stats to the current Forest number one, it’s clear that he would be an upgrade – with Nuno desperately needing to take a closer look at Ventura’s abilities.

During the 2023/24 campaign, the Gil Vicente ‘keeper started three games less than Sels, but overall produced more eye-catching numbers and would hugely improve the current goalkeeping situation on Trentside.

Ventura, who has previously been described as “top-quality” journalist Zach Lowy, made 21 more saves than Sels, whilst also boasting an 11% better save percentage over the course of the season.

He also kept a clean sheet in 28% of the games he started, a figure that is more than double of the Belgian who only managed a measly 11% – which included just one goalless performance in the 2-0 win against West Ham United.

Whilst it’s evident Samba has dominated the pair over the last 12 months, Ventura is a very close match to the Forest fan-favourite who captured the hearts of most at the City Ground – memorably producing shoot-out heroics in the playoff semi-final back in 2022, after saving three spot-kicks against Sheffield United.

The Frenchman’s distribution was a real key asset, with the Reds lacking a ‘keeper confident with his feet since his departure. However, the Brazilian has showcased his talents in this department, making 814 passes, a tally that is only 66 less than Samba but a whopping 99 more than Sels.

Matz Sels

Whilst Samba is expected to depart Lens this summer, it’s unlikely Forest will pursue a sensational return for the 30-year-old, with the club desperately needing to turn their attention to Ventura.

The former Botafogo goalkeeper is eight years younger than Samba, but also has the potential to develop into a world-class shot-stopper and future Brazil number one.

He would also provide a cheaper alternative to other options, helping the club’s PSR battle, but still possessing enough quality to be an upgrade on current number-one Sels.

CSA to consider reparations to players discriminated against in the past

Ntini, Kirsten, Klusener among nine former players who will be ambassadors of the project

Cricket South Africa will embark on a process of reparations for anyone involved in the game who has been discriminated against in the past as part of their Social Justice and Nation Building (SJN) project. Compensation amounts will be determined after complaints have been heard and mediated by the newly appointed transformation ombudsman Advocate Dumisa Ntsebeza, who will also be responsible for setting up the Restoration Fund.”My expectation is that based on the complaints, the ombudsman will be able to categorise them, and based on that, he will be able to determine what percentage goes to which player,” Dr Eugenia Kula-Ameyaw, a CSA Independent Board Director and their transformation chair, said. “If you work in an asbestos factory and they are affected by TB, you get compensated. There’s nothing wrong with compensation when people have lost income.”That means that anyone who believes they were denied opportunities on racial grounds could approach the ombudsman, who will then have to determine the severity of their case and the amount of compensation .The money for the fund has yet to be secured but CSA are hopeful of raising it through corporate involvement and even the South African government. “We’ve got to still raise the funds to see how we are going to restore. There are a lot of companies, even government, that is ready to restore people,” Kula-Ameyaw said. “The money will change hand at some point but the modalities and the formula must be worked out. It could even be after a year because the ombudsman will take a few months to set up and deal with complaints.”While the finer details, including a timeline, have not yet been finalised, Kula-Ameyaw called the launch of the SJN “one brick in this nation-building house,” which seeks to ensure that “everyone will be treated fairly in the game of cricket”. It also comes after several stories of exclusion were revealed in response to the Black Lives Matter movement. Former players and coaches have spoken out in the media and while none have actively asked for compensation (Thami Tsolekile demanded an apology), CSA are seeking to make financial contributions to those who were not able to earn money from the game because of discrimination. As an example, this might mean a player like Aaron Phangiso, who went to the 2015 World Cup and was the only member of the squad who did not play a game even after South Africa qualified for the quarter-finals with a game to spare, may be compensated in match fees or that Geoffrey Toyana, who missed out on the national coaching job in 2017 (which former CSA president Chris Nenzani has now called a “missed opportunity,”) may have a case for reparations. The ombudsman’s functions are not limited to people of colour only and Kula-Ameyaw indicated that anyone who has been involved in the game, at any level, can approach the ombudsman. “If something is fair, it will be fair to everybody,” she said.Potentially, that opens the door for players who see themselves as victims of the current target system, which requires franchise teams to field a minimum of six players of colour of which three must be black African. An example of such is Leus du Plooy, who told the Afrikaans-language publication in February that the reason he signed a Kolpak deal with Derbybshire was because, “the system we have disadvantages young, white players in particular.”Although the SJN will be open to hearing, and addressing, all stories of exclusion, Kula-Ameyaw stressed that CSA still need to accelerate the pace of change and ensure more representation for people of colour. While the work of the ombudsman will deal with historical complaints, CSA will continue its own transformation work, with an emphasis on on-field demographics. “Where we will focus the most, is the actual game. The plans will include building talent aggressively,” Kula-Ameyaw said. “The long-term plan is to make sure there is no racism in sport; no discrimination.”The SJN will be supported by nine former players, who have been named as the project’s ambassadors, and will assist with raising public awareness of the campaign. Some of the ambassadors, such as Makhaya Ntini, Monde Zondeki and Toyana, have already gone public with their experiences of discrimination. The list of ambassadors is: Zondeki, Gary Kirsten, Lance Klusener, Toyana, Ntini, Marcia Letsoalo, Shandre Fritz, Nolubabalo Ndzundzu and Dinesha Devnarain.
