Batting at No.3 'was completely my decision' – Joe Root on Ashes batting order

Captain pushed himself up order for good of the team balance

George Dobell at Edgbaston31-Jul-2019Joe Root has insisted it was his decision to move back to No. 3 in the England line-up and hopes the change proves his determination to take tough decisions for the benefit of the team.England’s top-order has struggled for several years and, going into the Ashes, it appeared they may field a top three with just 11 caps – and no centuries – between them. But while Root has previously made no secret of his preference to bat at No. 4, it became apparent earlier this week that he was going to move up the order in an attempt to add some experience in the top three. And while that could have been interpreted as Root bowing to the views of others in the team management – Trevor Bayliss, the coach, and Ed Smith, the head selector, have believed for some time that he should bat at No. 3 – he says it was a decision he came to independently during the Test against Ireland.”It was completely my decision,” Root said. “I came to the final decision in the Ireland match. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a long time. It’s an opportunity for me to get in there earlier to spread out the experience.”I’ve always thought the best thing for the team is for me to score runs. And for a long time my record at No.4 would suggest that would be the best thing. But, where we are as a team currently and where I’m at as a captain, I’m a good enough player to be able to make the same returns at No.3.”There are a number of different ways you can lead. This is just another opportunity to take my leadership forward and sort of show the rest of the group that it is something I’m more than prepared to do. I’m not expecting anyone to do something that I wouldn’t.”Joe Root prepares for English’s final pre-Ashes training session•Getty Images

Root has batted at No. 3 previously. He spent much of 2016 – before he was captain – in the role, though it was noticeable that he reverted to No. 4 as soon as he took on the leadership. And while he returned to No. 3 during the English summer of 2018, he struggled for runs (he averaged 29.22 in the Test against India and Pakistan that summer when he batted at No. 3) and moved back to No.4 during the final Test. In all, he averages 40.47 in 40 innings with two centuries and 10 half-centuries in the position. He averages 48.00 in 60 innings with seven centuries and 19 half-centuries at No. 4.He hopes, however, that his growing experience of captaincy has helped him compartmentalise the differing demands upon him and allow him to enjoy as much success a little further up the order.”Having captained this side for a while, I feel I can get my head around juggling leading on the field and batting,” Root said. “Hopefully we’ll see that in my batting and this can be a series where I stamp my authority in the role and make it my own. I’m excited to take on that challenge.”Root admits, however, that this could be a series dominated by bowlers. He knows that England’s decision to utilise a brand of Dukes ball with a particularly prominent seam may result in lower scores and accepts that his side may have to adapt to that reality. But he believes they must also stick to their natural games and has urged Jason Roy to continue to take the attack to the bowlers.”We understand that, especially in England, it can be very difficult at the top of the order,” Root said. “It’s how you react to that: are we skilful and smart enough to make big scores? We have exploited bowler-friendly conditions over the past few years and found ways of winning matches in England. We have a good record here. It is set up nicely to be a juicy contest.”So there is a lot of talk about bowlers, but with that comes the opportunity for batters to prove a point. You have to play to your strengths and Jason has been picked to play in his own manner at the top of the order. It’s very exciting that we have gone that way. It gives us something slightly different. He has the opportunity to put pressure on the opposition at the top of the order.”We have gone about things in a certain way for a long time and this is an opportunity to try something different. We feel like he is a high-quality international player. He has a point to prove in Test cricket, but he has a very good game on him. I’m very excited to see that unfold.”

Stan Collymore urges Aston Villa told to make "superb" signing for Emery

Either side of Aston Villa's promotion from the Championship to the Premier League, they launched multiple raids on Brentford. First, they poached their manager from the Bees, appointing Dean Smith, the man who would steer them back to the top flight, in 2018.

In 2019, he reunited with Ezri Konsa at Villa Park after paying £12m for the centre-back and then, a year on, he sanctioned what was at the time a club-record £28m deal for striker Ollie Watkins.

Ezri Konsa before a game with Aston Villa.

There haven't been any major dealings between the clubs since, but Villa have showed some interest in another striker at the Gtech Community Stadium, this time Ivan Toney. It was reported last May that Toney was on Unai Emery's radar, and that the Midlands outfit were plotting a move. It didn't materialise last summer, but now pundit Stan Collymore has pleaded with the club to revisit the deal.

Collymore offers to "drive" Toney to Villa

Speaking to CaughtOffside, Collymore told Villa to sign Toney on the basis that they need another more reliable option at the head of the team, with Jhon Duran facing multiple weeks out because of a hamstring injury.

He said: “I would love to see Aston Villa join the party. I know Toney’s preference may be to stay in London, but if he fancies a change of scenery, I would happily drive him to the Midlands myself.

"Unai Emery is one injury away from having no recognised striker. If Ollie Watkins is sidelined, that only leaves Jhon Duran, and he’s injured himself at the moment, so it’s obvious Villa needs a new forward — Toney would be a superb addition."

Toney deal ultimately makes little sense for Villa

Toney has proven himself to be a top-class striker, having reached the 20-goal mark in the league last season. There are no signs of him struggling to get back into form after an eight-month betting ban, either – heading into Saturday's trip to Wolves, he'd scored two in three following his return.

Emery could replace Watkins with Villa's teen "goal machine"

Aston Villa could have a perfect replacement for Ollie Watkins in their academy

ByRoss Kilvington Feb 9, 2024

But just because a player is elite, it doesn't always make them the right fit for a particular team. In Watkins, Villa have one of the outstanding centre-forwards in not only England, but European football this season. In addition to his 11 goals, he's also notched a league-high ten assists, ranking second in the division for overall goal involvements.

Yes, signing both players would offer Emery some peerless depth, but the reality is that both of these players are far too good to accept sitting on the bench. While the Spaniard has used a 4-4-2 at times and could theoretically accommodate the duo with that shape, his typical use of Moussa Diaby alongside Watkins suggests he prefers a more withdrawn option to complement his number nine.

The Arsenal star who outshone Jorginho vs Newcastle

Arsenal are rampant. 25 goals. 6 games. 6 wins. The Gunners are well and truly up for the fight in this Premier League title race.

Mikel Arteta’s men have come back from some fun in the Dubai sun to revive their season after a torrid New Year period where not only could they not win, but they couldn’t even score a goal either.

There were relentless cries for a new striker in January and although that point may well still be true, they certainly don’t have any problems finding the net.

In the last three games they have beaten West Ham 6-0, Burnley 5-0 and now Newcastle United 4-1. They are the second top scorers in the Premier League and the best defensive side; if that isn’t title-winning form then we’d like to know what it is.

But who was key to that win? A certain bargain buy in Jorginho shone once more.

Jorginho’s performance in numbers

The Italian was criticised and questioned, perhaps rather maliciously after he was signed in January 2023. Why was Arteta signing a Chelsea player whose best years were behind him?

A fair enough question, but Jorginho has answered his critics and has become one of the most liked players in this Arsenal team over the last year.

Arsenal's Jorginho

He’s a player that doesn’t start every game but when the going gets tough and the difficult fixtures come around, the midfielder is always there.

He won the Man of the Match award in the 3-1 win over Liverpool a few weeks ago and stepped into the centre of the pitch with ease this time too.

Playing at the base of the midfield, it allowed Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard the freedom to play further forward.

The Champions League winner walked away with TNT Sports’ Player of the Match award once more having taken 108 touches of the ball, more than anyone else on the field.

Jorginho also completed 91 of his passes at an 89% success rate. He was fouled twice in his attempts to evade the press and played a key role in Arsenal’s second goal of the game, scored by Kai Havertz.

The former Chelsea man played the ball in behind for Gabriel Martinelli who then laid it on a plate for the German to roll home.

That said, there were a few others who were arguably just as impressive as Jorginho. One of those players was Rice.

Declan Rice’s performance in numbers

Arsenal’s £105m summer signing has been simply sensational since arriving from West Ham. He’s scored big goals, notably against Chelsea and Manchester United and now he’s become a wizard from set plays.

In that 6-0 drubbing over his former club a few weeks ago the midfielder created two goals from a set piece and also found the net with a rasping drive from range.

Rice may not have found the net on this occasion but he registered another assist, supplying the corner which led to a rare strike for the ever-improving Jakub Kiwior who made it 4-0.

It took his tally for the campaign to five assists in the league. However, it was a display that was filled with even more quality elsewhere.

The club’s record signing completed a staggering 94% of his passes, the best of any side at the Emirates on Saturday evening, with four of those proving to be a key pass.

Furthermore, the England international won 100% of his aerial duels during a dominant display that saw him handed an 8/10 match rating courtesy of Football.London's Kaya Kaynak.

Arsenal have fielded a number of different combinations in midfield throughout 2024, with Havertz lining up alongside Rice but in Jorginho there is a balance in the ‘bigger’ games that looks far better. On Saturday night the pair of them were both phenomenal.

Remember, this is a team still missing Thomas Partey too. Imagine what Arsenal’s central area will look like once he’s back. For Rice, it’ll only be even more beneficial.

O jogo

Shastri? Hesson? Moody? India set to announce their head coach today

With Phil Simmons pulling out of the race, the shortlist has shrunk from six candidates to five

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Aug-2019

Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli address a press conference ahead of India’s departure to the West Indies•Associated Press

India are gearing up to announce their next head coach. Former captain Kapil Dev and his Cricket Advisory Committee made up of former coach Anshuman Gaekwad and former women’s captain Shanta Rangaswamy are conducting meetings with the candidates and are expected to make a final call on Friday evening. ESPNcricinfo understands that the shortlist shrunk from six candidates to five on Friday, with Phil Simmons pulling out of the race.Of the candidates appearing in front of the CAC, Shastri, who is in the West Indies with the India squad, was the last to take his interview. Here’s a quick look at everyone still in the running.Ravi ShastriThe incumbent and the favourite. Shastri has been on the job since the end of the Champions Trophy in 2017 and received strong and public endorsement three weeks ago when India’s captain Virat Kohli backed him to keep the job. India were ranked No. 1 in Tests and ODIs at various times during Shastri’s last tenure, made it to the World Cup semi-final and beat Australia in Australia for the first time in Test history.Mike HessonThe strategist. You might have noticed him on cricket broadcasts explaining how teams could go about getting players like Kane Williamson out. Well, imagine that info going directly to the Indian dressing room. Hesson coached New Zealand to the World Cup final in 2015 and is widely considered to be quite astute at reading conditions and helping his players adapt to them. New Zealand showed that during the World T20 in 2016 when they went into their opening game on a rank turner without their two best bowlers Trent Boult and Tim Southee and bowled India out for 79.Tom MoodyThe franchise heavyweight. Moody’s been everywhere. He led Sunrisers Hyderabad to their first IPL title in 2016. He’s been with Rangpur Riders in Bangladesh, Multan Sultans in Pakistan, Melbourne Renegades in Australia (as director of cricket) and has been sought after in international cricket as well. He was coach of Sri Lanka for a while and was in line to take charge of England before losing out to Trevor Bayliss.Robin SinghFour-time IPL champion. He’s been with Mumbai Indians for nearly a decade and that trophy cabinet keeps getting bigger. Robin has also worked with the Indian team previously – he was the fielding coach when they won the inaugural World T20 in 2007. Outside of that he’s had stints with India’s Under-19 and A teams, the Hong Kong national team, USA’s women’s team, CPL side Barbados Tridents and domestic teams in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.Lalchand RajputThe outsider. But, he was India’s manager when they went on that fairytale run in the 2007 World T20 followed by the tri-series win in Australia. As a player, he was one of those opening batsmen that was very hard to get out. And as a coach, he’s had brief stints with Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and India A.

The Kapil-led CAC was formed after the previous panel, comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, had to be disbanded owing to the BCCI Ethics Officer finding the last two subject to conflicts of interest under the new constitution of the board. Rangers now eyeing move to sign "outstanding" new star who could cost £0

After surviving last weekend's scare, courtesy of Celtic's slip, Rangers remain on course to complete their title comeback and secure the Scottish Premiership in stunning fashion under Philippe Clement. It is the type of scare that they'll want to avoid in the future, however, with a move to sign a Championship star now lined up to strengthen the squad further over the summer.

Rangers transfer news

If Rangers come out on top and win the Scottish Premiership this season, then they will be perfectly placed to welcome vital additions ahead of Clement's first full campaign in charge. It is the type of pull that Celtic have used so often in recent years to commence eras of dominance in Scottish football and one that the Gers will now be hoping to benefit from.

That said, the majority of the headlines regarding Rangers transfer news have been stolen by potential departures in recent weeks, rather than incomings. As things stand, Kemar Roofe, Ryan Jack, Leon Balogun and Borna Barisic are all among the players set to leave Ibrox upon the expiry of their contracts this summer. Meanwhile, a new deal for John Lundstram has reportedly been made a priority at Rangers, as they look to avoid the midfielder's exit.

Rangers'JohnLundstramduring training.

Among talks of potential exits though, the rumour mill has still already started regarding incomings. According to Carlton Palmer, Rangers are eyeing a move to sign Callum O'Hare from Coventry City, who will become a free agent at the end of the season.

Abdallah Sima could return as soon as next month in Rangers injury update

We could be seeing him at Ibrox again very soon.

ByTom Coates Mar 7, 2024

Palmer told Football League World: "One player who has been attracting a lot of attention is Callum O'Hare. Three La Liga clubs are looking at him. Celtic and Rangers are also said to be keen on the 25-year-old too.

"He's yet to sign a new contract at Coventry and his current deal is set to expire in the summer. He's had an outstanding season, and it's very unlikely now, with so few games left, that he'll sign a new deal."

Palmer then went on to say: "He was offered a new contract and a good contract at that, but he wants to keep his option open at the end of the season. Unless they are promoted to the Premier League, I feel that it's more than likely that Callum O'Hare will play his football in pastures new come next season."

"Outstanding" O'Hare can follow Cantwell path

As his Coventry contract runs down, O'Hare has the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Todd Cantwell, who swapped the Championship for Scotland in January of last year when completing a move from Norwich City to Rangers. Now, it is O'Hare that the Gers are seemingly eyeing a move for this summer, as they turn to the Championship for reinforcements once again. After the season that the Coventry man has had too, interest from Ibrox comes as no surprise.

Daniel Hughes guides nervy chase after Harry Conway's ten-wicket haul

Michael Neser and Billy Stanlake reduced New South Wales to 5 for 53 as they chased 134

The Report by Andrew McGlashan13-Oct-2019

New South Wales team-mates celebrate with Harry Conway•Getty Images

Harry Conway took career-best match figures of 10 for 56 but New South Wales needed Daniel Hughes’ composed 66 to secure a hard-fought five-wicket win at the Gabba it what became a tricky chase.Conway’s second-innings haul of 5 for 39 – to follow 5 for 17 on the opening day – left New South Wales a target of 134. David Warner fell for a first-ball duck, edging low to third slip off Michael Neser, and after lunch the chase fell to 5 for 53.Steven Smith was caught behind off the impressive Neser, who added Moises Henriques in similar manner. Billy Stanlake then made an impression, removing Nick Larkin and Nick Bertus in the space of three balls, and with half the side out and 81 still needed, Queensland were sensing a notable turnaround. However, Hughes, who was in sparkling form during the Marsh Cup, played the testing situation nervelessly as he reached a 93-ball half-century alongside captain Peter Nevill, who was unbeaten on 31 in a match-winning stand of 81.Queensland had resumed on 5 for 186 and Trent Copeland made the breakthrough when he hooped one back at Jimmy Peirson, who shouldered arms. Ten runs later came the key wicket, when Mitchell Starc struck his only blow of the match by having Marnus Labuschagne caught behind shortly after he had passed fifty for the second time in the game.New South Wales were then frustrated by a 48-run stand for the eighth wicket between Neser and Cameron Gannon before Conway got into the act. Neser popped a leading edge to mid-off, Mark Steketee was sharply held at second slip by Smith, and Stanlake was yorked first ball. While Conway led his team-mates off the field with ten wickets to his name, Starc finished the match with figures of 39-10-129-1. With Copeland and Sean Abbott having also bowled well, New South Wales could face a tricky selection decision for their next match at the SCG if Nathan Lyon is available.
