It's been a quiet transfer window for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City as they try to chase down Liverpool in the Premier League title race. The reigning champions have sealed a £12.5m deal for young River Plate midfielder Claudio Echeverri, but he'll be remaining in Argentina for the entirety of 2024 before he lands at the Etihad, so they won't feel the immediate impact of that move.
Now, it looks like City are about to do another deal, this time within the City Football Group (CFG), for a player who can slot straight into the upper echelons of their academy.
Tibidi making City move
According to French outlet RMC Sport, Man City are signing Alexis Tibidi on loan from French second-division Troyes, who are of course part of the CFG, and an announcement is imminent. The report acknowledges that the move is a "surprise", particularly after previous loan club NEC Nijmegen expressed concerns over the player's "investment".
However, City are hopeful the player will benefit from a temporary stint at the Etihad where he will have the opportunity to train with the first-team on occasion, under the tutelage of Guardiola himself, and play for the under-21s.
Tibidi can get back on track at City
It was only 12 months ago that Tibidi joined the CFG with Troyes, signing from Stuttgart in a €2.3m transfer. He'd played 13 games during his stint with the German club but found most success on loan in Austria with Altach, where he scored five goals in 16 matches.
In the second half of last season, the winger hardly featured for his new club, notching just 72 minutes over the course of three substitute appearances in Ligue 1. Tellingly, he played more than double that number for the B-team (153).
Man City seriously eyeing 'magician' as Begiristain told to pay club-record fee
The player is secretly open to a move, but it will take an enormous outlay.
ByDavid Comerford Jan 20, 2024
That's where the loan to the Netherlands came in. The goal was to get him playing consistent first-team football in order to further his development, but partly because of the aforementioned dissatisfaction with his attitude, he didn't feature at all.
That prompted Troyes to recall him at the end of the year, and now City have intervened in the hope of getting his career back on track. This is a player who was regarded as a "top talent" when he joined Troyes and, at 20, he still has time on his side. The opportunity to work with Guardiola from time to time and take part in some of the highest-level training sessions in world football could be invaluable.
City could also use the help for their under-21 side. After romping to the Premier League 2 Division 1 title by 13 points last year, they've tumbled all the way down to the bottom of the 26-team table this term, having collected just six points from their 11 games. The hope will be that adding a player who already has decent experience of the senior game will be a lift to those struggling academy talents too.

Former England spinner on suffering from “paranoia/schizophrenia” and setting the record straight with his new book

Former England spinner Monty Panesar has spoken in depth about his mental health issues, describing the shock of being diagnosed with “paranoia/schizophrenia”. The 37-year-old now believes he has put his problems behind him and remains hopeful that he can win a return to first-class cricket despite being without a club since 2016.Panesar was an England regular during the mid-to-late 2000s but suffered from bouts of depression and drinking to excess. He was released by Sussex in 2013 after a late-night incident that involved urinating on a bouncer outside a club and although he was included on the subsequent Ashes tour, he played his final match for England during that year’s Boxing Day Test at the MCG.Speaking to Nasser Hussain, the former England captain, in an interview with the , Panesar talked about his battle with depression and his hopes for a comeback. He revealed that he had consulted another former England captain Mike Brearley, who is also a qualified psychologist, about his mental health.”My parents became worried,” he said. “They wanted me to see someone. I had always thought strong people couldn’t have a problem. I was always the guy who would win games, who had everything in order.”My cricket had always gone the way I had planned it, but suddenly things started going in a direction I hadn’t experienced since childhood. It had all been up, up, up but this was new territory mentally.”It was a guy called Peter Gilmore who said I was suffering from paranoia/schizophrenia and that shocked me massively. Mike Brearley told me to be careful about the things I was saying to myself. Some experts thought I’d never get better but I knew I could fight it, come through it.”Having left Sussex, Panesar had further run-ins with the management at Essex, before returning for a brief spell at Northamptonshire, where he originally rose to England prominence. He has now written an autobiography, , detailing his experiences and said he is determined to give his playing career “one more go”.”It was difficult,” he said. “Everyone was doubting me. I spoke to [former wicketkeeper turned mentor] Neil Burns and he told me everyone thought I’d gone off the rails. He told me there were so many rumours and I had to put the record straight. I tried to do a couple of interviews to get the message out that I’d had problems, but I was on the way back.”Now the book will hopefully get everything out there. I love the game. I’m not a bad egg in the dressing room, I’m actually a nice guy. I want people to remember the good Monty, but it takes a while to eradicate bad memories. It’s like I’m a fireball and people are worried that if they get too close to me they’ll get burnt.”I don’t need medication. I don’t drink. I don’t have good and bad days. All of those things have gone. There was a moment I was at Northampton about 18 months ago and I looked around and thought, ‘Wow, those paranoid thoughts are not there any more’. I knew then Monty was back. I’m going to be a cricketer again. I’m going to do it.”

Leeds United will worry about Daniel James' immediate future in the first-team after Daniel Farke hauled off the electric Welshman at half-time versus Norwich City recently, the once scapegoated attacker an absolute star in West Yorkshire now.
Removed from the field of play owing to a hip issue, there's not yet any timescale for the ex-Manchester United man's possible return – the one-time Red Devil onto 17 goal contributions for the season so far as a crucial first-team presence, all this coming after being offloaded to Fulham on loan just last campaign.
Dan James
James potentially being out of action in the Whites treatment room for some time could possibly derail the Championship promotion contenders, but this January incoming would more than soften the blow of the 26-year-old winger being injury-stricken and help in their prolonged aspirations of going back up to the Premier League.
A transfer to replace Dan James
Leeds have been linked with a move for AFC Bournemouth attacker David Brooks for the majority of the transfer window, with the Cherries starting Brooks – regardless of all this transfer talk – in their last FA Cup game as the fringe number seven tore Swansea City to shreds.
Brooks would help himself to two assists and a goal as Andoni Iraola's side swept the Swans aside 5-0 in devastating fashion, with the Leeds target saying after his standout display that he will "explore opportunities elsewhere" if more first-team football is on the menu.
With Brooks winning a promotion up to the Premier League during his career making him even more of a desired buy this January, he could well be the ideal purchase more so now to replace a sidelined James.
Why Brooks could replace Dan James
It would be a like-for-like swap, one dangerous Welshman being replaced by another exciting compatriot of James in the form of Brooks.
His display against Swansea showed what the current Cherries winger can do against Championship defences, twisting and turning the Swans for fun on the South Coast.
In his last full season at Championship level, the slick Bournemouth man amassed five goals and six assists and could be taken up a notch altogether playing alongside the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter in this explosive Leeds team going forward.
Described as "first class" by ex-Bournemouth boss Scott Parker when Brooks was performing to the peak of his powers in the second tier, Farke landing Brooks could be a signing of intent in trying to gain an advantage in the automatic promotion picture on top of easing anxieties surrounding James' knock.
With Southampton also reportedly wanting to land Brooks in a highly publicised transfer tussle this month, Leeds coming out on top could give Farke's men a slight psychological edge over the third-placed Saints who are just one point ahead of them.
David Brooks
Coming into a side that already has Welsh representation in Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu – alongside James – Brooks will hope there's a synergy present if he relocates to Elland Road.
If everyone is on the same wavelength even with the disruptive news of James being out and the Bournemouth winger in, Brooks can help Leeds pull off an immediate return to the promised land of the top flight.

Leeds United are already being linked with summer moves for players, should Daniel Farke’s side earn promotion from the Championship.
Leeds’ January window
The Whites’ main focus was on outgoings and contract renewals in January. Djed Spence saw his season-long loan from Spurs cut short, whereas Luke Ayling left on loan for Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday signed Ian Poveda.
Teenagers Darko Gyabi and Lewis Bate left on loan and Leo Hjelde and Sean McGurk joined Sunderland and Swindon Town on permanent transfers. There was a late incoming at Elland Road, with Connor Roberts joining on loan from Burnley.
Connor Roberts
Farke was happy with the window overall, saying after Leeds’ 1-0 win at Bristol City on Friday:
"It was crucial that we kept our key players, and we did this. We made no secret that we would need one or two defensive players.
"We wanted to bring a specialist in and we found one with Connor Roberts. He's a top class character, fully committed. It's feels like we're the Welsh national team!"
Roberts joins fellow countrymen Jo Rodon, Dan James and Ethan Ampadu in Yorkshire, with Leeds battling for automatic promotion. Should they go up, then attention will once again be on the summer transfer window, with the 49ers Enterprises possibly looking at a long-term target once more.
Leeds linked with Ben Brereton Diaz
Journalist Ben Jacobs, talking to CaugtOffside, relayed by TEAMtalk, shared an update on Ben Brereton Diaz’s future in the last 48 hours. The reporter backed Leeds to revisit their interest in the striker, should they get promoted.
“Come the summer I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Leeds revisiting an old target in Ben Brereton Diaz. He’s at Sheffield United right now but that’s a straight loan, with no option to make permanent. So if Leeds get promoted don’t be surprised if they come back in for Brereton Diaz who has been on their radar for quite some time.”
Leeds’ interest in Brereton Diaz dates back to 2021 when Marcelo Bielsa was still in charge of the club. Former Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray backed the striker in 2020, calling him a “beast”.
“Brereton's like a beast now, and he can score goals. I see it every day in training. He's a brilliant lad and all our lads absolutely love him.
“He's filled out now and he will work so hard for this team. He's very gifted and can score goals. I'm confident that Ben Brereton, given the game time, and remember he needs to get in front of the Armstrongs and the Dacks, can and will do it.
“I can see the physicality level of Brereton these days and he's really looking like a man now, and scored a great goal. He worked his socks off and the more he plays the more confident he'll become.”
The Chile international went from strength to strength at Ewood Park and is now finding his feet in the Premier League on loan at Sheffield United from Villarreal. He’s already scored two goals for the struggling Blades in just 177 minutes of top-flight football, so if the Whites do win promotion, perhaps he could be a shrewd signing to rival the likes of Patrick Bamford, Joel Piroe and Georginio Rutter.

Teenager falls for 91 but Sam Hain remains firm after Olly Stone’s five-for limits Hampshire to 539

Teenager Rob Yates fell nine runs of his maiden first-class century as Warwickshire battled hard to eat into Hampshire’s huge first-innings total of 539.Top order batsman Yates, who only signed his first professional deal last December, showed maturity which belied his age to guide his side towards the follow-on target. The 19-year-old academy graduate added a vital 142-run stand for the third wicket with fellow talented youngster Sam Hain, who collected his second Specsavers County Championship half-century of the season.Earlier, Olly Stone had marked his return from almost seven months on the sidelines with a bone stress injury in his lower back with a five-wicket haul. Stone, who had taken three wickets on his first day of action of the season helped wrap up the Hampshire tail inside 20 overs during the morning.Hampshire returned on 450 for 6 after an an extraordinary opening day which had seen Ian Holland and Aneurin Donald notch centuries. The bright sunshine which had shone over the Ageas Bowl made way for overcast conditions on day two, although the wicket remained flat as Hampshire added 89 more runs.Gareth Berg lasted five overs before he was castled by Oliver Hannon-Dalby. Lewis McManus and Keith Barker, against his former county, added 60 for the eighth wicket, scoring 41 not out and 35 respectively. But the final three wickets fell for six runs as Ben Mike had Barker caught at deep square leg before Stone had Kyle Abbott lbw and Fidel Edwards bounced out to claim figures of 5 for 93.Warwickshire’s reply started poorly as Will Rhodes edged Kyle Abbott behind to leave the visitors 15 for 1 at lunch. That became 39 for 2 when Division One’s highest run-maker Dom Sibley tamely chipped Abbott to cover. With 350 runs still required to avoid the follow-on, and an uber-accurate and disciplined Hampshire bowling attack asserting plenty of pressure, Hain and Yates joined for a dogged partnership. Attacking shots came at a premium throughout the afternoon session, with the run-rate barely touching two.Solihull-born Yates, who has played for Warwickshire since their Under-10s, was handed two lives, on 35 and 45, as plenty of runs came through the slip cordon.Yates broke into the first team during Warwickshire’s Royal London Cup campaign and hasn’t been left out since. He batted patiently to reach a half-century in 144 balls, beating his previous best score of 49, and appeared on course for three figures. But he meekly fell for 91 when he struck part-time spinner Felix Organ to short midwicket.Meanwhile, Hain passed his 3000th Championship run before moving to his own fifty in 85-balls as he ended the day unbeaten on 68. Warwickshire on 198 for 3, still 191 adrift of the follow-on and trailing by 341.
