Chelsea set to sell "beast" on a permanent basis; will take a big loss

Chelsea have made a decision on one of their more expensive players at Stamford Bridge as Mauricio Pochettino continues to shape his squad, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Jackson injury, Hazard retires, Chelsea target Osimhen…

Cited by Football London, a Chelsea injury update on striker Nicolas Jackson has indicated that the Senegalese striker has withdrawn from international duty with the Lions of Teranga in order to undergo a minor operation on his wrist after he wore a splint for the Blues' last two fixtures.

Rangers forward Abdallah Sima has replaced Jackson in the Senegal squad as he recovers from the procedure over the international break ahead of Chelsea's trip to Arsenal upon the resumption of the Premier League campaign.

Chelsea icon Eden Hazard has announced his retirement from football and has taken to social media platform Instagram to thank everyone involved in his career, stating via The Guardian: "You must listen to yourself and say stop at the right time. After 16 years and more than 700 matches played, I have decided to end my career as a professional footballer. I was able to realise my dream, I have played and had fun on many pitches around the world. Thank you to everyone for these great times, I will miss you all."

Former Belgium international Hazard endeared himself to the Stamford Bridge faithful as a hero over the course of his seven years at Chelsea, registering 110 goals and 92 assists in 352 appearances across all competitions (Hazard statistics)

Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed on his Substack "Si Phillips Talks Chelsea" that Pochettino sees Napoli striker Victor Osimhen as a "dream" Chelsea transfer target, while Brentford's Ivan Toney is also said to be on the radar at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea transfer news – Romelu Lukaku

Transfer expert Romano has delivered another Chelsea transfer update on social media platform X regarding forgotten Blues striker Romelu Lukaku, who has rediscovered his best form out on loan at Jose Mourinho's Roma.

Romano stated: "Understand Chelsea have already fixed an exit fee for Romelu Lukaku in summer 2024 — and it’s around £37m. There’s an agreement to make Romelu available for that fee next year. Lukaku, doing great on loan to Roma as he scored 7 goals."

Labelled a "beast" by former Inter Milan striker Christian Vieri, Lukaku has managed to average 2.5 shots on goal per fixture this term in the Italian top-flight, alongside gaining an average match rating of 7.31/10, as per WhoScored.

Nevertheless, he could now be set to depart Stamford Bridge for a relatively cheap fee of £37 million, which looks almost microscopic compared to the £97.5 million fee the Blues paid for Lukaku in 2021.

Worcestershire blow as Joe Leach ruled out for season with stress fracture

Worcestershire captain Joe Leach has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after being diagnosed with a stress fracture of the back.Leach felt soreness during the Royal London Cup match against Warwickshire last week and subsequent scans revealed the injury.”Joe felt some soreness during the Warwickshire game and an MRI scan on Friday showed inflammation around the l5 region of the lumbar spine,” Worcestershire head of sports science and medicine, Ben Davies, said”He then had a CT scan on Tuesday which unfortunately showed a stress fracture in that region and he will miss the rest of the season. It will now be a case of resting and then rehab for Joe with the aim of making a complete recovery.”Leach has taken almost 200 Championship wickets between 2015 and 2017 and this season had claimed 23 wickets at 22.08 but Worcestershire will now have to cope without their attack leader. They face a relegation battle in the Championship and the T20 Blast starts next month alongside their quest to reach a Lord’s final in Royal London.Head coach Kevin Sharp said: “It is a big blow and Joe is gutted and quite upset at the minute. He has played such a major part for the club over the last few years.”It is life. Bowling is a very physical job. Joe has had very few injuries but very rarely do bowlers go through their career without some sort of injury.”We now have to regroup a bit. We have lost our captain for the rest of the season and we will have a think about things and sort that out over the next week.”The lads will also be gutted but there is a great spirit in this squad and they will want to do it for Joe on Sunday.”It means there will be an opening for others that might not have had an opportunity. We want the lads to stand up and be counted – and I’m sure they will.”

Sussex have the edge amid Cheltenham's cheery conviviality

A tight finish is in store at Cheltenham so like the revellers in the marquees circling the ground the scoreboard needs to be on its best behaviour

Paul Edwards at Cheltenham18-Jul-2018

Jofra Archer was in the wickets for Sussex•Getty Images

ScorecardThis day began with the completion of a domestic collapse fit to rank with that of Overend, Gurney and Company in 1866, six years before the Cheltenham Festival began. It ended with Gloucestershire batting again and seeking to atone for their previous frailty by making 276 to win. They have so far scored 30 of those runs but have lost their openers, both of whom were caught behind by Ben Brown off Jofra Archer. Thus, after three fluctuating sessions we are set for a climax to savour. Watching county cricket this summer has seemed an idyll without interruption; it has been good fortune without tariff.Yet if Wednesday’s cricket began and ended with Archer cruising in and scenting flesh, the heart of our cricket featured a gloriously disciplined innings of 98 by Harry Finch, who came to the middle when Phil Salt was bowled for 9 by Ryan Higgins in the sixth over of Sussex’s second innings and did not depart until his side’s lead was nearly 200. Finch’s dismissal, caught behind off Craig Miles, came one ball after his 16th four, a faultless cover-drive, had taken him to within a single good hit of his second century of the season. His departure was surprising because his defence had hitherto been so compact and his attacking shots had been played without the showy flourish which so often suggests vulnerability. To borrow a term used by Mike Brearley in his book Finch’s batting was “centred” in the fashion of batsmen in decent nick and his fatal flirt with a ball just outside off stump was one of his few errors. For most of the day the other Sussex batsmen played their innings around Finch’s 205-minute vigil. Luke Wright’s gloriously savage 48 included nine fours and a six but ended two balls after lunch when he drove David Payne low to Ryan Higgins at mid-off. David Wiese put on 39 for the sixth wicket with Finch and was seventh out for 40 when his attempted drive off Higgins skied the ball towards Prothero’s chapel, only for Miles to hare some forty yards from mid-on and take a quite brilliant catch. Chris Jordan made a pleasant 30 before edging Miles to Roderick. In contrast to Gloucestershire, who had lost the last seven wickets in their first innings for 11 runs in 8.5 overs, Sussex built modest partnerships. This was easier, perhaps, because Ben Brown leads a team with a clear top six in its order and four other batsmen each of whom could go in at No 7. If the home side mirror their careful approach, Dent’s men may yet achieve a very fine victory. The odds, though, are against it. A target of 276 is substantial on a pitch offering inconsistency of bounce. David Payne’s four wickets on Wednesday were a just reward and included his 200th first-class victim but Archer, Jordan and Ollie Robinson will reckon they can more than match his contribution, albeit that Gloucestershire’s batsmen are under no pressure to score quickly. And it was also a day on which the packed tents and marquees – over 20 of them at this year’s festival – could take in Cheltenham’s many glories. Indeed, the College Ground is the sort of venue where visitors struggling to shake off the past suddenly find they have no wish to do so.There are Sussex connections, too. Just to the left of the pavilion a fine Lombardy poplar commemorates the achievement of the KS Duleepsinhji who took 7 for 35 in 1921 against a Marlborough team whose eleven players boasted 27 initials. Duleep nearly steered Sussex to the County Championship in 1932 only for his health to break down in mid-August. He never played for the county again. And perhaps spectators in Wednesday’s cheery chaos of canvas, clinking glasses and jazz bands needed a sense of history and a tranquil approach to life as they watched George Drissell and Matt Taylor, two nightwatchmen if you please, defy the Sussex seamers in the final 25 balls of the day.At least they could be grateful the scoreboard worked. On the first day of this game the damn thing had packed in and essential details had to be announced over the public address. This managed to be very irritating while also not mattering much at all. This is Cheltenham, after all. That wretched board will need to work properly on the final day, though.

Leeds must replace 6 ft 1 forward who’s worse than Piroe in January

Leeds United underwent a summer of change as new faces came in behind the scenes and on the pitch following relegation down to the Championship.

The Whites spent three seasons in the Premier League and dropped out of the top-flight at the end of last season after Sam Allardyce came in and failed to save the day.

They reacted to that disappointment with a swoop to appoint German head coach Daniel Farke to lead them back to the big time by the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the Yorkshire-based outfit backed the former Norwich City tactician with nine new signings to bolster his playing squad, after the likes of Max Wober, Rodrigo, Rasmus Kristensen, and Robin Koch, among others, moved elsewhere.

Farke has proven his worth at this level, with two Championship titles at Carrow Road, and looked to strengthen his side at the top end of the pitch with the signing of Piroe.

However, the Dutch marksman was the only striker who was brought in and that has left Patrick Bamford as the back up to the ex-Swansea man and Georginio Rutter.

This appears to be a glaring weakness within the current squad after the former England international produced his latest disaster in the 1-0 defeat to Stoke on Wednesday night.

Patrick Bamford's performance against Stoke

The former Middlesbrough number nine was brought on for Piroe with 20 minutes left to play against the Potters with the score at 0-0, seemingly with the hope that he would be able to go and win the game for the Whites.

It appeared to be the perfect start for the English forward as he won a penalty just minutes after coming off the bench. Rutter played a fantastic ball through to the striker and Ben Pearson was adjudged to have fouled him after going to ground in the box.

He then had the confidence to step up and take the spot-kick himself, instead of Rutter or Crysencio Summerville, but fired it comfortably over the crossbar after the goalkeeper dived the opposite way.

Bamford attempted to lift his strike into the top left corner and put far too much on it in what appeared to be a very relaxed effort from the experienced attacker.

Journalist Phil Hay described the miss as "hugely costly" for Leeds and this is not the first time that has been the case for the ex-Norwich loanee as he has now missed his last three penalties for the club.

To make matters worse, the centre-forward then played a part in what turned out to be the winning goal for the home side. The Leeds dud allowed Wesley to get the better of him at the front post from a corner and the Brazilian ace's header came back off the crossbar and in via Pascal Struijk's shoulder.

It was, therefore, a disastrous cameo from Bamford as he missed a golden opportunity to seal all three points for Farke's team before contributing, albeit as part of a collective mistake to not deal with the set-piece, to Stoke's winner.

The Whites head coach must now finally bin the 30-year-old dud in January after they failed to move him on during the recent summer transfer window.

It was reported that Bamford was 'ready' to part ways with the club ahead of the 2023/24 campaign as Farke was evaluating his squad. However, no switch materialised for the former Chelsea academy graduate and he remained at Elland Road.

The 6 foot 1 striker has failed to score or provide an assist in five league outings this season and has proven himself to be a worse option than Piroe, who has struggled of late.

The statistics that show Piroe is better than Bamford

Leeds brought the talented marksman in from Championship rivals Swansea City during the summer window and he has hit the ground running in Yorkshire.

Piroe has produced five goals in ten league outings for the Whites since his move from Wales and is currently the club's top goalscorer in the league, with one more than Summerville and at least three more than every other player.

This shows that the 24-year-old finisher has been a superb addition to the squad as Farke's go-to man for goals so far this season alongside Summerville.

joel-piroe-championship-southampton-leeds-united-farke-meslier-awful

However, the impressive ace has hit a lull in form with one goal in his last five Championship appearances for the club, with two 'big chances' missed during those matches.

He is a proven performer at this level, though, and will, hopefully, get back to his goalscoring ways after two sublime seasons with Swansea. The left-footed whiz scored 19 league goals during the 2022/23 campaign and that came off the back of 22 strikes throughout his debut year in English football.

Despite his recent struggles in front of goal, Piroe is still a far superior option to Bamford, due to his five-goal haul so far this campaign and the ex-England international's disappointing form over the last 18 months or so.

Bamford's statistics last season

The left-footed liability came into this season off the back of a poor year at Premier League level as his team were relegated back down to the Championship.

Bamford scored four goals in 28 top-flight outings, which came after two goals in nine during the 2021/22 campaign, and missed a whopping 13 'big chances' in total.

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford.

His teammates created 8.61 xG (Expected Goals) worth of opportunities for him at the top end of the pitch but he was only able to make the most of four chances.

The Whites number nine did not return the favour to his fellow attackers as he ended the season with an xA (Expected Assists) of 0.86, and created one 'big chance'.

These statistics suggest that Bamford let the team down with his performances last season as he did not take advantage of the chances that fell his way.

Taking his displays over the last 18 months into account, along with Piroe being a considerably better option, Farke must now finally bin Bamford after a prolonged spell of underperformance in January, if possible, after a move did not go ahead in the summer.

Liverpool chasing Szoboszlai 2.0 in “dynamic” £26m-rated star

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will be satisfied with his squad's progress this season; so far, the Reds have restored the midfield's zest, returned to the front of the Premier League pack, and successfully navigated into the latter stage of the Carabao Cup.

11 matches into the campaign, third-placed Liverpool boast 24 points and are just one win away from levelling with table-topping defending champions Manchester City, having only lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the most contentious of circumstances – but we need not go into that, ay.

The Merseyside club's previous encounter, however, was rife with residual problems from last year, with newly-promoted Luton Town holding Liverpool to a draw at Kenilworth Road, in fact headed for victory but for Luis Diaz's emotional equaliser before the death.

The match highlighted some weaknesses that remain despite an industrial midfield rebuild this summer, with a specialist No. 6 still needed.

Liverpool have recently been credited with an interest in a formidable midfielder recently, and while he is not the anchor that the Anfield side need, he could be a worthy addition to improve the centre of the park.

Liverpool transfer news – Piotr Zielinski

According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, via TEAMtalk, Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski is on Klopp's radar once again, with the German a long-time admirer of the Serie A champion, who is out of contract next summer.

While it does not seem likely that fresh terms will be agreed in Naples, Liverpool will face fierce competition in the form of Italian giants Juventus, who will pounce on the opportunity to land the Poland international on a free.

Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski.

Whether the Reds decide to ramp up their interest and push for a pre-contract agreement in January or decide to be prudent and lodge an offer in the winter market remains to be seen.

CIES Football Observatory's valuation model provides Zielinski with a £26m price tag, but it's likely that a lesser figure could be agreed given the circumstances.

Piotr Zielinski's style of play

Zielinski has been a central figure at Napoli – both positionally and in regard to importance – since arriving from Udinese for a reported €16m (£14m) fee in 2016, ending months of transfer speculation that placed Liverpool in firm contention.

The 29-year-old has now completed 343 appearances for I Partenopei since joining, scoring 50 goals and providing 46 assists for his teammates, dubbed a “baller” by journalist Patrick Boyland for his feats.

The table above portrays a varied blend of players and highlights Zielinski's faculty for the creative, so often supplying his peers with the goods to wreak havoc in the final third.

Last year, as Napoli soared unstoppably toward the Scudetto, the 5 foot 10 star played a pivotal role and posted three goals and eight assists from 27 starting appearances in Serie A, completing 88% of his passes and averaging 2.3 key passes per game.

As per FBref, the 86-cap Poland captain ranks among the top 2% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 15% for progressive carries and the top 7% for progressive passes received per 90.

Napoli midfielderPiotr Zielinski.

Ancelotti said: “Zielinski is a complete midfielder, he played in all positions with me. He is dynamic and skilled with the ball.”

The innate ball-playing ability would be something that Klopp could make good use of, and while he is not the most active of defensive components, Zielinski's qualities would meld wonderfully with the peers around him at Anfield.

The £108k-per-week ace could also prove to be the perfect alternative to Dominik Szoboszlai in the centre of the park, with the Hungarian maestro proving to be a revelation under Klopp's stewardship, having arrived from RB Leipzig for £60m in the summer.

How Piotr Zielinski compares to Dominik Szoboszlai

The "Hungarian artist", as he has been dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, enjoyed glinted riches in Germany with Leipzig, winning successive DFB Pokal titles, before making the move to Liverpool to try his hand in one of the the world's toughest divisions, and so far, he is ticking all the boxes.

Across 15 appearances, the 36-cap Hungary captain has scored two goals and two assists apiece, and while he is not finding the back of the net with the greatest regularity, his importance to the team transcends the mere joy of direct goal contributions.

Szoboszlai ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 10% for progressive passes and the top 7% for progressive carries per 90, and actually sees Zielinski listed as a comparable player.

Both immensely talented and creative forces, the Liverpool man has been integral in maintaining the fluency and spark in the centre this term, averaging 2.4 key passes and 7.2 ball recoveries per game while also completing 88% of his passes.

Zielinski, as is highlighted through his metrics earlier, offers the kind of talent to fill in and balance the workload; in the long run, this will only aid Liverpool in their endeavours.

Previously heralded as a "generational talent" by journalist Marcel Moeller, the 22-year-old is certainly staking his claim for a starring role in the Premier League for years to come, staggeringly talented, doggedly tenacious and seamlessly elegant in craft.

Liverpool might be well-equipped with a player of Szoboszlai's stature plying their trade in the centre of the pitch, but over-reliance on the £120k-per-week machine's qualities could prove to be detrimental, either by increasing the chance of injury or burning him out.

With Zielinski added to the fold, Klopp could finally wield a creative midfielder he has clearly done his homework on, complementing Szoboszlai's talents and filling in with constancy in his performances when need be.

With Thiago Alcantara's days seemingly numbered on Merseyside, out of contract next June, this could be a fantastic acquisition for an experienced winner who could settle the equilibrium.
