Rangers Manager News: Kris Boyd Drops Claim On Michael Beale

Glasgow Rangers manager Michael Beale hasn’t lived up to expectations so far this season, and Sky Sports pundit Kris Boyd has delivered a brutal verdict on his future at Ibrox.

How long has Michael Beale been a manager?

After carrying out assistant spells at Chelsea, Liverpool, Sao Paulo, Rangers and Aston Villa, Beale’s first senior role began at Queens Park Rangers back in June 2022, where he soon departed after just months in charge following his appointment at Ibrox in November, as per Transfermarkt.

The Bromley-born coach’s contract north of the border isn’t set to expire for another three years, but having made a mixed start to the new campaign in the Scottish Premiership, there’s a strong possibility that supporters could be questioning whether he’s still the right man for the job.

The Light Blues have so far won two and lost two of their opening four fixtures, via Sky Sports, meaning that they find themselves in fourth place in the table having taken six points from a possible 12, and the 43-year-old’s displays in the dugout haven’t impressed one of the club’s former players.

What has Boyd said about Michael Beale?

Speaking to Sky Sports, Boyd blamed Beale for Rangers’ underwhelming form and ripped into murmurings around the club that their Champions League humiliation could be brushed aside.

"You're four points behind Celtic. Your objective was to get to the Champions League yet you're out of that. I've listened to all of the drivel in the week as well in terms of 'it's better to play in the Europa League'. It's embarrassing.

"There's £20m to Celtic again ahead of Rangers, it's embarrassing. For anybody to come out and say 'at least we can compete in the Europa League' – give me peace.

"It's down to the recruitment. If you don't get it spot on, you're going to come under scrutiny. That's exactly where Michael Beale finds himself. He's been backed, and he's going to have to face the questions and answer the questions. The previous regime was slated for its recruitment and the exact same thing is happening at this moment in time.

"You can't lose your home games in the Old Firm and expect to win the league because it doesn't usually happen. And with a two-week break before their next game, the critics will be out and rightly so because it's not been good enough.”

Glasgow Rangers manager Michael Beale.

What is Michael Beale's record at Rangers?

Whilst Rangers haven’t made the perfect start to life this season, supporters have to remember the positive impact that Beale’s had prior to this, so even though the club’s current position isn’t ideal, the hierarchy should stand by their man for now.

Since putting pen to paper, the boss has overseen 37 games, and from that has recorded 26 wins, four draws and just seven losses, meaning that he’s taken 82 points from a possible 111, as per Transfermarkt, which is a very decent return while finding his feet – but he now needs to kick on in his second season.

Beale, who has a preferred formation of an attack-minded 4-3-3, will be aware that he has to start seriously challenging his Old Firm rivals Celtic for silverware, but having made nine new signings over the summer, the fresh faces should begin bonding in the near future.

Lazaroni traça objetivo no Botafogo: 'Resultados a curto prazo'

É a realidade.

Carreira

Winter five-for helps SA build lead after White's 149

Jake Weatherald’s 62, coupled with an unbeaten 48 from Alex Ross, bolstered South Australia’s lead to 216 after Cameron White struck his 21st first-class hundred

Jake Weatherald’s 62, coupled with an unbeaten 48 from Alex Ross, bolstered South Australia’s lead to 216 on day three at the Adelaide Oval. Cameron White headlined Victoria’s response with a 149 in a must-win match for them, but debutant left-arm medium-pacer Nick Winter struck with a five-wicket haul to hand South Australia a slim first-innings lead of eight runs.Seb Gotch was bowled on the fourth ball of the day by Daniel Worrall while White built on his overnight score of 68 to score his 21st first-class century, collecting a total of 10 fours and four sixes, before handing a catch to Ross off Joe Mennie. Chris Tremain’s 23 helped Victoria narrow the deficit, before Winter bagged a couple of lower-order wickets to add to his previous day’s three-for. Worrall and Mennie picked two wickets each while Winter ended with 5 for 85.Weatherald got South Australia’s second innings underway with a 16-run first over against Peter Siddle, helping them race to 40 inside five overs. Tremain, however, broke the partnership in the next over, removing Kelvin Smith for 10. Even as Weatherald, who followed his century in the BBL final with a duck in the first innings, motored on to his eighth first-class fifty, strikes from Scott Boland and Jon Holland, and a run-out by Siddle, reduced South Australia to 5 for 134. Ross and Harry Nielsen subsequently steadied the innings with an unbeaten 74-run partnership that hoisted South Australia to 208 without the loss of any more wickets.

'If we don't have belief there's no point turning up' – Anderson

The two things England have most enjoyed in this Test match so far have been with neither bat or ball

Andrew McGlashan in Auckland23-Mar-2018The two things England have most enjoyed in this Test match so far have been with neither bat or ball: Ed Sheeran popped into the dressing room while in Auckland for three gigs this weekend, and rain wiped out most of the second day with more forecast for the next two. Stuart Broad’s 400th wicket aside, there is not much else they can take from it.Sheeran, a cricket fan who is friends with Shane Warne, received a bat from Mark Wood and a signed shirt. “A few of the lads chatted to him for a while, it was nice especially after a couple of average days to meet someone of his calibre,” James Anderson said. “It was nice of him to come in, there are a lot of big fans in there.”Back on the field there was precious little to savour in the 23.1 overs possible. They bowled tightly but without much penetration which is not a new story. Anderson managed to extract Kane Williamson for 102, but New Zealand’s lead swelled to 171.Having been bowled out for 58, the game is so far advanced that the weather is not yet a problem for the home side, but the forecast is poor for the weekend. From such depths England will take any help they can, although Anderson insisted they could yet haul themselves out of the mire.”We have to keep believing we can save it because if we don’t have belief there’s no point turning up and putting in the hard yards and bowling the overs in the middle,” he said. “We’ve got to believe that we can get something out of this game.”Twenty-four hours after registering their sixth-lowest total in Test history and threatening the lowest by anyone – 26 – there was a sense of England still trying to work out how it happened. The same could be said for New Zealand. When asked his thoughts on batting before lunch on the first day, Anderson said: “It was a big chance for my maiden hundred.” Gallows humour is not a bad idea.”I can’t remember experiencing an hour like that before,” he added. “Certainly at the start of the game. It’s just one of those things, when the stars align, you’re not on form and facing two world-class bowlers it’s going to happen. We’ve got to try and work very hard to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”There was still a sense of disbelief in Williamson’s voice: “It was a bit of a perfect storm, really. England have a very long batting line-up. Even when you do fire you expect a partnership or two. It was doing just enough and that just enough was on our side. Hard to beat it from our perspective with ball in hand.”On the first day England coach Trevor Bayliss lamented technical failings from batsmen with a reluctance to get on the front foot to a slightly moving ball and while the major post-mortem will wait until after the match, Anderson said the onus was on the batsmen to work out what had gone wrong.”I’m sure the batsmen are working hard with the coaches to figure out what went wrong with them and counter that during the second innings and hopefully bat much better. I think it’s something after the game we’ll really have a chat about it but at the minute you’ve really got to do what you can do to influence this game.”More rain would be music to England’s ears. Otherwise, they might have time to see one of Ed Sheeran’s concerts in person.

Nottingham Forest interested in "exciting" teenager for January

When it comes to transfers, Nottingham Forest are often one of the busiest sides in the Premier League these days, with Steve Cooper getting one reinforcement after another. And, that doesn't look likely to stop anytime soon.

During the summer window, the Midlands club welcomed a total of 14 arrivals, ranging from Divock Origi and Athony Elanga, all the way to Ibrahim Sangare, as they spent a reported €122m (£105m).

That said, so far, their business has looked incredibly smart, making the money spent more than worthwhile. Having played four league games in the league this season, Cooper's side have won twice, and lost twice, with one of those victories coming at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea. Winning six points from a possible 12 after facing three of the classic top six in the Premier League represents a solid start.

Now, Forest have reportedly turned their attention to January, with reports suggesting that they could return for one particular player when the winter transfer window opens.

What's the latest Nottingham Forest transfer news?

When January does come around, Forest will be hoping to be in a comfortable position to welcome additions without any relegation fears. And that could see them turn their focus towards Tom Watson.

According to Alan Nixon, the Midlands club are still interested in the Sunderland teenager, and could make another move for him in January, having reportedly failed to secure his signature in the summer transfer window.

A deal may prove to be more difficult at the start of next year, however, given that Watson has just signed a new contract at the Stadium of Light, placing the Black Cats in a stronger position to negotiate. Clearly willing to splash the cash, though, Forest could yet push on and sign their target. It's certainly one to keep an eye on.

Who is Tom Watson?

Still only 17-years-old, Watson made his debut for Tony Mowbray's Sunderland side last season, whilst also featuring heavily for the youth sides, making Forest's interest in the winger little surprise.

As of right now, Watson's focus will undoubtedly be firmly fixed on his Sunderland future, and earning further opportunities within the first-team. After scoring five goals, and assisting a further six in the U18s Premier League last season, having made 13 appearances, the young winger certainly looks ready for a chance, too. Now, it will just be about whether Mowbray feels that he is ready.

Watson is a prospect who has earned plenty of praise during his time at the Championship side, including from Sunderland academy manager, Robin Nicholls, who said, via The Northern Echo after the teenager signed a new deal:

“We are delighted to continue the journey with Tommy. He has been with the club since he was a young child and the signing of this first professional contract is a testament to the hard work and dedication of himself, his family, and the Academy staff.

"Tommy has shown himself to be an exciting and dynamic attacking player and has really kicked on since leaving school and joining the club full-time. He has been recognised internationally and has been part of several of the recent England U17 squads. We believe we have the right environment and pathway to ensure he gets many more opportunities."

Sri Lanka Super Four Provincial Tournament to start this week

The four captains pose with the new Super Provincial Tournament trophy in Colombo•SLC

Sri Lanka Cricket’s revamped domestic provincial tournament has been given a name and a launch date. The Super Four Provincial Tournament, which was initially due to be played last December, will now get underway on 30 March, with some of the best talent in the country taking part. The tournament, which will consist of four provincial teams based around SLC Centres of Excellence in Colombo, Galle, Kandy and Dambulla, facing off in six four-day games – two of which will be played with a pink ball under lights – will also serve as a testing ground for Sri Lanka’s tour of the West Indies in May. SLC confirmed in a release that the rescheduling was done “in order to make room for the tournament to be used as a precursor to the West Indies Tour”.The tournament will also see Sri Lanka limited-overs captain Angelo Mathews returning from injury, as he looks set to captain Kandy. Test captain Dinesh Chandimal, Test vice-captain Suranga Lakmal, and Test batsman Dimuth Karunaratne, will be the other captains. SLC have so far named preliminary squads ranging from 20 – 23 players, which will be trimmed down to 15 in the coming days by Sri Lanka’s selectors in consultation with the team captains. SLC will also be hoping to keep an eye on some of Sri Lanka’s burgeoning Under-19 talent, with Hasitha Boyagoda, fresh off his world-record knock at the Under-19 World Cup, and the ambidextrous Kamindu Mendis among several Under-19 players taking part. All the matches will be played in Hambantota, Dambulla and Katunayake. SLC explained that Kandy was not considered as the stadium is being used for the school cricket season, while Colombo was overlooked in order to stir up interest in less heralded areas of the country.

Man United: Ten Hag must bin star who made fewer passes than Onana v Palace

It has been some few weeks for young Hannibal Mejbri at Manchester United, with the promising playmaker having seemingly come from nowhere to secure a prominent role in Erik ten Hag's side.

Having returned to Old Trafford following a stint on loan at Birmingham City in the second tier, there had been suggestions that the 20-year-old would be shipped out on a temporary basis yet again over the summer, particularly after failing to earn a place in the matchday squad for the opening games of the season.

Aided by the lengthy list of absentees in Manchester, however, the Tunisian international was handed his chance off the bench against Brighton and Hove Albion earlier this month, more than taking that opportunity after netting a stunning first goal for the club from range.

Another impressive showing followed from the start against Burnley – with his performance hailed as "perfect" by Ten Hag – although yesterday's comfortable Carabao Cup victory over Crystal Palace showed that there is still plenty of room for improvement for the midfielder.

How did Mejbri perform against Palace?

On a night in which United strolled into the fourth round with a routine 3-0 win, Mejbri was not quite the influential presence he had been at Turf Moor, with Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst writing that the emerging talent had 'struggled to influence proceedings with the ball'.

That was evidenced by the fact that he made just 28 passes in total – fewer than teammate Andre Onana in the sticks (31) – while also failing to make a single key pass or complete a successful dribble, with his 6.4 match rating having been the lowest of any starting player for the hosts – as per Sofascore.

Previously hailed as "phenomenal" by Blues boss Josh Eustace during his time at St Andrew's, there is no doubting the France-born maestro's commitment off the ball as he yet again worked tirelessly to press from the front, albeit having been slightly too eager at times after picking up an early yellow card.

Hannibal Mejbri

With four fouls in total on the night, the former Monaco ace may count himself lucky not to have been dismissed prior to his eventual withdrawal on the hour mark, with there needing to be occasions where the striking talent reins it in somewhat, despite his desire to impress.

It was that committed approach that endeared Mejbri to supporters initially following his brief cameo at Anfield back in April 2022 – having been praised by club legend Bryan Robson for showing "some pride" on that grim night on Merseyside – yet Ten Hag can ill afford to lose players needlessly to suspension amid his other selection woes.

Will Mejbri start against Palace this weekend?

Bizarrely, the fixture list has thrown up another clash between the Red Devils and Roy Hodgson's men at the Theatre of Dreams on Saturday afternoon, with the home side seeking what would be a third successive win in all competitions.

In truth, despite his bright, 'energetic' performances of late – as per GOAL's Richard Martin – Mejbri may find himself ruthlessly axed from the starting lineup this weekend, particularly with Bruno Fernandes likely to return in that playmaking berth after enjoying a well-earned, midweek rest.

With the Portugal international a true "creative machine" – as per Manchester City counterpart Kevin De Bruyne – it is imperative that United get him back into his favoured position in the centre, rather than being shifted out wide to cover the loss of the likes of Antony and Jadon Sancho.

Man United's Bruno Fernandes

Mejbri's versatility does mean he could operate in a deeper role alongside Casemiro if needed, yet with both Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat now back fit and firing, Ten Hag may look to more senior options to bolster the midfield moving forward.

To oust the academy graduate from the side would be a perhaps harsh move, yet it is fair to say that the 5 foot 10 sensation didn't do quite enough to warrant another inclusion against the Eagles.
